Aims. The detection of c-C3HC2H and possible future detection of c-C3HCN provide new molecules for reaction chemistry in the dense ISM where R-C2 and R-CN species are prevalent. Determination of chemically viable c-C3HC2H and c-C3HCN derivatives and their prominent spectral features can accelerate potential astrophysical detection for this chemical family. This work will characterize three such derivatives: c-C3(C2H)2, c-C3(CN)2, and c-C3(C2H)(CN).

Methods. Interstellar reaction pathways of small carbonaceous species are well-replicated through quantum chemical means. Highly-accurate cc-pVX Z-F12/CCSD(T)-F12 (X =D,T) calculations generate the energetics of chemical formation pathways as well as the basis for quartic force field and …

Proton, Neutron, And Nuclei Models Without Strong Nuclear Force, Polievkt Perov

College of Arts & Sciences Faculty Works

We show that for the particles that have both a charge and a magnetic moment, combining the electrostatic and the magnetic interactions between particles allows to build a consistent description of nuclear structures made of such particles, without introducing the concept of a strong nuclear force. In the modern nuclear physics, protons and neutrons are described as consisting of quarks, the particles that possess the charge and the spin magnetic moment properties. We show that combining the electrostatic and magnetic forces between quarks in nucleons, it is possible to achieve all the required interactions in the nucleons the strong nuclear …

The Effects Of Salinity And Acetaminophen On The Aquatic Snail Physa Acuta, Michelle Sackey-Ansah, Megan Mackey, Daniel Elias, Jason Doll, Alyssa Brookhart

Journal of the South Carolina Academy of Science

Pharmaceuticals are increasingly detected in water bodies, and their presence can negatively impact aquatic organisms. This effect can be amplified when combined with increasing salinity in freshwater ecosystems. Acetaminophen is a widely used analgesic that is commonly found in river, streams, and waters where it is discharged directly. Therefore, organisms present in these locations (e.g., insects, snails, amphibians, and fish) are likely to be affected by acetaminophen. In this study, we determined the effects of elevated salinity (0.68 g/L), acetaminophen (500 µg/L) and combined elevated salinity (0.68 g/L) and acetaminophen (500 µg/L), on the growth, reproduction, and movement of the …

Pressure - Temperature Phase Diagram Of Crsite3, J L. Musfeldt, David Mandrus, Zhenxian Liu

Chemistry Publications and Other Works

van der Waals solids are well known to host remarkable phase diagrams with competing phases, unusual energy transfer processes, and elusive states of matter. Among this class of materials, chalcogenides have emerged as the most flexible and relevant platforms for unraveling charge-structure-function relationships. In order to explore the properties of complex chalcogenides under external stimuli, we measured the far infrared spectroscopic response of CrSiTe3 under extreme pressure-temperature conditions. Analysis of the 368 cm−1 Si-Te stretching mode and the manner in which it is screened by the closure of the indirect gap reveals that the insulator-metal transition takes place immediately after …

Bitumen Aging—Laboratory Simulation Methods Used In Practice And Selected Directions Of Research On New Methods, Paweł Czajkowski, Andrzej Przyjazny, Grzegorz Boczkaj

Natural Sciences Publications

Changes in the properties of bitumen binders that occur as a result of aging have a huge impact on the durability of products produced from them. In particular, asphalt pavements, which constitute the most common use of petroleum bitumen, are susceptible to damage resulting from the increasing stiffness of the bitumen during its life cycle. Increased stiffness of asphalt pavements reduces the pavement resistance to low-temperature cracks and fatigue cracks, ultimately leading to the loss of their functional properties and the need for road repair. The rate of changes in bitumen properties is influenced by many factors, the most important …

A Deep Learning Based Dual Encoder–Decoder Framework For Anatomical Structure Segmentation In Chest X-Ray Images, Ihsan Ullah, Farman Ali, Babar Shah, Shaker El-Sappagh, Tamer Abuhmed, Sang Hyun Park

All Works

Automated multi-organ segmentation plays an essential part in the computer-aided diagnostic (CAD) of chest X-ray fluoroscopy. However, developing a CAD system for the anatomical structure segmentation remains challenging due to several indistinct structures, variations in the anatomical structure shape among different individuals, the presence of medical tools, such as pacemakers and catheters, and various artifacts in the chest radiographic images. In this paper, we propose a robust deep learning segmentation framework for the anatomical structure in chest radiographs that utilizes a dual encoder–decoder convolutional neural network (CNN). The first network in the dual encoder–decoder structure effectively utilizes a pre-trained VGG19 …

Numerical Study Of Owls’ Leading-Edge Serrations, Asif Shahriar Nafi Jan 2023

Numerical Study Of Owls’ Leading-Edge Serrations, Asif Shahriar Nafi

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The silent flight ability of owls is often attributed to their unique wing morphology and its interaction with their wingbeat kinematics. Among these distinctive morphological features, leading-edge serrations stand out – these are rigid, miniature, hook-like patterns located at the leading edge of the primary feathers of their wings. It had been hypothesized that these leading-edge serrations serve as a passive flow control mechanism, influencing the aerodynamic performance and potentially affecting the boundary layer development over the wing, subsequently influencing wake flow dynamics. Despite being the subject of research spanning multiple decades, a consensus regarding the aerodynamic mechanisms underpinning owls’ …

Was Entropy Conserved Between Bbn And Recombination?, A. C. Sobotka, A. L. Erickcek, Tristan L. Smith

Physics & Astronomy Faculty Works

We test the assumption of entropy conservation between big bang nucleosynthesis and recombination by considering a massive particle that decays into a mixture of photons and other relativistic species. We employ Planck temperature and polarization anisotropies, COBE/FIRAS spectral distortion bounds, and the observed primordial deuterium abundance to constrain these decay scenarios. If between 56% and 71% of the decaying particle’s energy is transferred to photons, then Neff at recombination is minimally altered, and Planck data alone allows for significant entropy injection. If photons are injected by the decay, the addition of spectral distortion bounds restricts the decay rate of …

Development Of Battery Materials To Function As Corrosion Protection On Car Body Plates, Tubagus Noor Rohmannudin, Sulistijono Sulistijono, Noval Adrinanda, Faridz Wira Dharma, Samuel Areliano

Journal of Materials Exploration and Findings

Most car bodies made for mass production are made from steel or aluminum. Both are strong metals, but steel is cheaper than aluminum and is more commonly used in lower-end cars for a broader consumer range. The weakness of steel compared to aluminum is that it is susceptible to corrosion under certain conditions, and thus it may deteriorate over time without proper care. To prevent corrosion, modern cars are coated with paint to prevent direct contact with the environment. As a second line of protection, a car battery can be connected to the body to create an impressed current cathodic …

Nearby Galaxies: Modelling Star Formation Histories And Contamination By Unresolved Background Galaxies, Hadi Papei

Electronic Thesis and Dissertation Repository

Galaxies are complex systems of stars, gas, dust, and dark matter which evolve over billions of years, and one of the main goals of astrophysics is to understand how these complex systems form and change. Measuring the star formation history of nearby galaxies, in which thousands of stars can be resolved individually, has provided us with a clear picture of their evolutionary history and the evolution of galaxies in general.

In this work, we have developed the first public Python package, SFHPy, to measure star formation histories of nearby galaxies using their colour-magnitude diagrams. In this algorithm, an observed colour-magnitude …

In-Plane Ferroelectric Tunnel Junctions Based On 2d Α-In2Se3/ Semiconductor Heterostructures, Zifang Liu, Pengfei Hou, Lizhong Sun, Evgeny Y. Tsymbal, Jie Jiang, Qiong Yang

Department of Physics and Astronomy: Faculty Publications

Ferroelectric tunnel junctions (FTJs) have great potential for application in high-density non-volatile memories. Recently, α-In2Se3 was found to exhibit robust in-plane and out-of-plane ferroelectric polarizations at a monolayer thickness, which is ideal to serve as a ferroelectric component in miniaturized electronic devices. In this work, we design two-dimensional van der Waals heterostructures composed of an α-In2Se3 ferroelectric and a hexagonal IV–VI semiconductor and propose an in-plane FTJ based on these heterostructures. Our first-principles calculations show that the electronic band structure of the designed heterostructures can be switched between insulating and metallic states by ferroelectric …

Pythagorean Vectors And Rational Orthonormal Matrices, Aishat Olagunju Jan 2023

Pythagorean Vectors And Rational Orthonormal Matrices, Aishat Olagunju

Electronic Thesis and Dissertation Repository

A Pythagorean vector is an integer vector having an integer 2-norm. Such vectors are closely related to Pythagorean n-tuples, since n-tuples are the building blocks for Pythagorean vectors. Pythagorean vectors are, in their turn, the building blocks for rational orthonormal matrices. The work in this thesis has a pedagogical application to the QR decomposition of matrices, widely used in Linear Algebra. A barrier for students learning the details of the QR decomposition of a given matrix A is the occurrence of square-roots that cannot be simplified during the application of the two standard algorithms, namely the Gram--Schmidt method and Householder …

A Predictive Model For Diabetes Mellitus Using Machine Learning Techniques (A Study In Nigeria), Abraham Eseoghene Evwiekpaefe, Nafisat Abdulkadir

The African Journal of Information Systems

Diabetes Mellitus (DM) is a metabolic disorder that occurs when the blood sugar level in the body is considered to be high, thereby resulting in inadequate insulin in the body leading to a myriad complications. The World Health Organization in 2021 indicated that in 2019, diabetes was the direct cause of 1.5 million deaths. Though some research has been carried out in the area of DM prediction in high-income countries, not much has been done in middle/low-income countries like Nigeria, using factors that are peculiar to their environment. This paper, therefore, aims to develop a machine learning model that predicts …
