The small Indian mongoose (Urva auropunctata) is the primary terrestrial wildlife rabies reservoir on at least four Caribbean islands, including Puerto Rico. In Puerto Rico, mongooses represent a risk to public health, based on direct human exposure and indirectly through the transmission of rabies virus to domestic animals. To date, the fundamental ecological relationships of space use among mongooses and between mongooses and domestic animals remain poorly understood. Wild pigs (Sus scrofa) can levy substantial costs to domestic livestock operations and global supply chains due to disease introduction. Producers can take defensive action to avert these costs, but the factors influencing these decisions are not well understood. We examined survey data to characterize the type and frequency of contacts between wild pigs and domestic livestock and investigated the determinants of farm operator concern for disease introduction using an ordered logit model. Developing A Data-Driven Statistical Model For Accurately Predicting The Superconducting Critical Temperature Of Materials Using Multiple Regression And Gradient-Boosted Methods, Emil Agbemade

This study focuses on developing a statistical model for estimating the superconducting critical temperature (Tc) of materials using a data-driven strategy. The study analyzed 21,263 superconductors and used a combination of multiple regression and gradient-boosted models to make predictions. The analysis included a descriptive analysis of the distribution of Tc, feature selection using the Backwards selection method, and model diagnostics. The results showed that the gradient-boosted method outperformed the multiple linear regression method with an RMSE of 12.01 and an R2 value of 88.23 after fine-tuning its hyperparameters. Many open-channel turbulent flow studies have been focused on highly constrained conditions. Thus, it is rather conventional to note such flows as being fully developed, fully turbulent, and unaffected by sidewalls and free surface disturbances. However, many real-life flow phenomena in natural water bodies and artificially installed drain channels are not as ideal. This work is aimed at studying some of these unconstrained conditions. A famous conjecture of Stanley states that his chromatic symmetric function distinguishes trees. As a quasisymmetric analogue, we conjecture that the chromatic quasisymmetric function of Shareshian and Wachs and of Ellzey distinguishes directed trees. This latter conjecture would be implied by an affirmative answer to a question of Hasebe and Tsujie about the P-partition enumerator distinguishing posets whose Hasse diagrams are trees. They proved the case of rooted trees and our results include a generalization of their result.

In recent decades, the program of Decoherence has helped clarify how features of the classical world emerge from Quantum Mechanics. According to Decoherence, the interaction between a system and its environment dynamically selects certain system states — the pointer states — that exhibit predictable, classical behavior while their superpositions rapidly decohere. Mass shootings in America have been a recurring issue for years. In this project, we examine mass shootings that have occurred in the United States from 1966 to 2022. Through exploratory data analyses, we explore patterns and trends in shooting events, as well as various patterns in shooters, such as their mental health status, relationship status, social media usage, evidence of trauma in adulthood, and ongoing stressors during the time of the shooting. Outdoor recreation is a highly profitable industry in the United States. In 2021, outdoor recreation accounted for $454.0 billion, or 1.9% of the current-dollar gross domestic product for the nation. Many states have benefited financially from focusing on promoting their outdoor recreation and natural resources. Whitewater (WW) paddling has been a recreational activity since the 1950s. In 2007 there were an estimated 1.2 million participants in whitewater kayaking. As of 2020, that number increased to 2.6 million, doubling the number of participants. The Southern Complex, located near Marquette, Michigan is in the southernmost portion of the Superior Province. This complex consists of granitoids and granitic gneiss that vary in composition. In twentieth century research, Hoffman (1987) and Tinkham (1997) concluded that the Southern Complex contained two units in which the granitoid was emplaced in the granitic gneiss. Recent research conducted by Petryk (2019) determined that the Southern Complex has a U-Pb zircon age of 2600 Ma. Dalle Fratte (2020) concluded that the granitic gneiss migmatite texture was the result of a felsic magma mixing with several generations of mafic intrusions that were …

In September 2016 NASA flew an interferometric synthetic aperture radar (GLISTIN) over most of the glacier-covered regions of the coterminous USA for the purpose of mapping the surface elevation of the glaciers. Where multiple passes were flown over the same ground track, the data were mosaiced together to improve data coverage and elevation accuracy. These data are to be used with elevations collected by past and future efforts to calculate volume change of glaciers.

Parathyroid hormone 1 receptor (PTH1R) is a family-B GPCR that plays a crucial role in bone remodeling. Previous studies show extracellular Ca2+ is a positive allosteric modulator for one PTH1R ligand, parathyroid hormone (PTH), which is approved by US FDA to treat severe osteoporosis. Moreover, PTH residues E19 & E22 have shown to be involved in Ca2+ sensing. However, the effects of PTH Ca2+ sensing on intracellular G-protein binding are unknown. Since Victor Hess's groundbreaking detection of cosmic rays in the Earth's atmosphere in 1912, the origins of these charged particles have remained an enduring mystery. Recent studies suggest that these cosmic rays are accelerated beyond Peta electronvolts by powerful astrophysical sources within our own galaxy. While the cosmic rays themselves are being deflected in all directions by magnetic fields, the gamma rays produced by them, being electrically neutral, travel to the observer in a straight line. [Fe(Htrz)2(trz)](BF4) (Fe-triazole) spin crossover molecules show thermal, electrical, and optical switching between high spin (HS) and low spin (LS) states, making them promising candidates for molecular spintronics. The LS and HS transitions originate from the electronic configurations of Fe(II) and are considered to be diamagnetic and paramagnetic respectively. The Fe(II) LS state has six paired electrons in the ground states with no interaction with the magnetic field and a diamagnetic behavior is usually observed. Spin crossover molecules are a promising candidate for molecular spintronics that aim for ultrafast and low-power devices for data storage and magnetic and information sensing. The rapid spin state transition is best controlled by non-thermal methods including magnetic field. Unfortunately, the magnetic field normally required to switch the spin state is normally high (~30 T), which calls for better understanding of the fundamental mechanism. The Precision Proton Spectrometer (PPS) of the CMS and TOTEM experiments collected 107.7 fb−1 in proton-proton (pp) collisions at the LHC at 13 TeV (Run 2). This paper describes the key features of the PPS alignment and optics calibrations, the proton reconstruction procedure, as well as the detector efficiency and the performance of the PPS simulation. The reconstruction and simulation are validated using a sample of (semi)exclusive dilepton events. The performance of PPS has proven the feasibility of continuously operating a near-beam proton spectrometer at a high luminosity hadron collider.

Directly imaging structural dynamics involving hydrogen atoms by ultrafast diffraction methods is complicated by their low scattering cross sections. Here we demonstrate that megaelectronvolt ultrafast electron diffraction is sufficiently sensitive to follow hydrogen dynamics in isolated molecules. In a study of the photodissociation of gas phase ammonia, we simultaneously observe signatures of the nuclear and corresponding electronic structure changes resulting from the dissociation dynamics in the time-dependent diffraction. Both assignments are confirmed by ab initio simulations of the photochemical dynamics and the resulting diffraction observable. While the temporal resolution of the experiment is insufficient to resolve the dissociation in time, …

In the face of the rapidly escalating climate crisis, the electricity sector is moving toward renewable energy. To date, policies and strategies have focused on increasing overall renewable energy generation, with little regard for timing and location. The result has been a misalignment of supply and demand in renewable energy markets. Renewable power projects produce energy when and where it is least expensive, leaving supply scarce at other times and places. Consumers, meanwhile, continue to use power when and where they need it.
