New Advances In Long-Term Monitoring Of Storm-Deposited Boulder Ridges Along Rocky Shorelines Of San Salvador Island, Bahamas, Bosiljka Glumac, Ursula Miquel, H. Allen Curran

Geosciences: Faculty Publications

Beginning in January 2012, we have monitored two boulder ridges on San Salvador: Singer Bar Point (SBP, length ~790 m) along the reef- and lagoon-protected northern coast and The Gulf (TG, length ~460 m) on the island’s high-energy southern coast. This long-term monitoring aims at documenting changes in ridge morphology and distribution, and the direction and amount of movement of individual boulders to gain insights into the intensity and effects of storms on these coastal areas.

In the initial stage of our investigations, the largest boulders from each site were photographed, GPS-located, measured, and characterized by composition and morphology. Boulders …

H2(G) Production From Dimethylamine Borane By Cu0/Wo3 Nps Catalyst, Doaa Al-Hameedawi̇, Seda Karaboğa, İzzet Morkan

Turkish Journal of Chemistry

Cu0 NPs supported on tungsten (VI) oxide (WO3) were in situ generated from the reduction of Cu2+ ions during dehydrogenation of dimethylamine borane (DMAB). The Cu0/WO3 NPs displayed tangible catalytic activity in H2 (g) releasing reaction and they were identified by using advanced techniques. Cu0/WO3 NPs were found as active catalyst providing one equiv. H2(g) per mole of DMAB. The results from TEM images display the formation of Cu0 NPs with an average particle size of 4.6 ± 1.0 nm on the surface of WO3. Moreover, Cu0/WO3 NPs with various metal loadings were prepared and tested as catalyst in dehydrogenation …

Fortifying The Seams Of Software Systems, Hong Jin Kang Jan 2023

Fortifying The Seams Of Software Systems, Hong Jin Kang

Dissertations and Theses Collection (Open Access)

A seam in software is a place where two components within a software system meet. There are more seams in software now than ever before as modern software systems rely extensively on third-party software components, e.g., libraries. Due to the increasing complexity of software systems, understanding and improving the reliability of these components and their use is crucial. While the use of software components eases the development process, it also introduces challenges due to the interaction between the components.

This dissertation tackles problems associated with software reliability when using third-party software components. Developers write programs that interact with libraries through …

The two metrics for assessing cortical power and processing were event-related desynchronization (ERD)—a measure of relative change in power—of the alpha (8-12 Hz) brain frequency band, and alpha and beta (13-30Hz) …

Bedrock Channel Geometry: Meter To Micron Scale Controls On Fluvial Incision, Nicholas J. Colaianne Jan 2023

Bedrock Channel Geometry: Meter To Micron Scale Controls On Fluvial Incision, Nicholas J. Colaianne

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports

The relative resistance of various rock types to incisional processes vary widely and the properties governing bedrock erodibility are poorly understood. Lithologic properties influencing erodibility are the culmination of a rock’s depositional, diagenetic, and exhumation processes. Difficulty identifying a convenient physical proxy for erodibility suggests examining evidence of these processes holistically may offer insight into the role of each in setting a rock’s resistance to incisional forces. In this study we use measured channel geometries along a short stretch of the Dry Fork, WV hosting three distinct lithologic settings to infer relative erodibility against measured and observed fluvial, lithologic, and …

Civil & Environmental Engineering Faculty Publications

The National Academy of Engineering has identified restoring and improving urban infrastructure as one of the grand challenges for engineering. Urban coastal communities are particularly at risk as their infrastructure is experiencing frequent inundation related to climate change impacts. Rising sea levels in coastal communities create backflow into stormwater systems and deplete capacity. In addition, the increase in rainfall intensity, duration, and frequency related to climate change create additional challenges for aging infrastructure systems. To prepare students to solve these challenges, the Civil and Environmental Engineering (CEE) and Civil Engineering Technology (CET) programs at Old Dominion University (ODU) are introducing …

Nitrite Cycling In The Primary Nitrite Maxima Of The Eastern Tropical North Pacific, Nicole M. Travis, Colette L. Kelly, Margaret R. Mulholland, Karen L. Casciotti Jan 2023

Nitrite Cycling In The Primary Nitrite Maxima Of The Eastern Tropical North Pacific, Nicole M. Travis, Colette L. Kelly, Margaret R. Mulholland, Karen L. Casciotti

OES Faculty Publications

The primary nitrite maximum (PNM) is a ubiquitous feature of the upper ocean, where nitrite accumulates in a sharp peak at the base of the euphotic zone. This feature is situated where many chemical and hydrographic properties have strong gradients and the activities of several microbial processes overlap. Near the PNM, four major microbial processes are active in nitrite cycling: ammonia oxidation, nitrite oxidation, nitrate reduction and nitrite uptake. The first two processes are mediated by the nitrifying archaeal/bacterial community, while the second two processes are primarily conducted by phytoplankton. The overlapping spatial habitats and substrate requirements for these microbes …

Assessing Spurious Correlations In Big Search Data, Jesse T. Richman, Ryan J. Roberts Jan 2023

Assessing Spurious Correlations In Big Search Data, Jesse T. Richman, Ryan J. Roberts

Political Science & Geography Faculty Publications

Big search data offers the opportunity to identify new and potentially real-time measures and predictors of important political, geographic, social, cultural, economic, and epidemiological phenomena, measures that might serve an important role as leading indicators in forecasts and nowcasts. However, it also presents vast new risks that scientists or the public will identify meaningless and totally spurious ‘relationships’ between variables. This study is the first to quantify that risk in the context of search data. We find that spurious correlations arise at exceptionally high frequencies among probability distributions examined for random variables based upon gamma (1, 1) and Gaussian random …

The Future Of Alternative Energy? Simulating Methyl Stearate Pyrolysis Via Molecular Dynamic Processes, Sarah J. Adeoye Jan 2023

The Future Of Alternative Energy? Simulating Methyl Stearate Pyrolysis Via Molecular Dynamic Processes, Sarah J. Adeoye

MSU Graduate Theses

The process of extracting and refining crude oil is both expensive and environmentally hazardous. The synthesis of biodiesel sourced from vegetable oils is a renewable process and less hazardous to the environment. Therefore, we seek to understand the pyrolysis procedure at an atomic level in hopes of optimizing future fuel viability. Herein, I analyze methyl stearate (a component of biodiesel) using an in-house database of ab initio trajectories, each simulating 1.0 ps (with 1.0 fs resolution). These jobs were observed for significant bond-breaking/forming events, the type of fragments produced, and the exact position and time for each event. Statistical analysis …

Designing An Optimal Medicine Cocktail Is Np-Hard, Luc Longpre, Vladik Kreinovich Jan 2023

Designing An Optimal Medicine Cocktail Is Np-Hard, Luc Longpre, Vladik Kreinovich

Departmental Technical Reports (CS)

In many cases, a combination of different drugs -- known as a medicine cocktail -- is more effective against a disease than each individual drug. It is desirable to find the most effective cocktail. This problem can be naturally formulated as a problem of maximizing a quadratic expression under the condition that all the unknowns (concentrations of different medicines) are non-negative. At first glance, it may seem that this problem is feasible -- since a similar economic problem of finding the optimal investment portfolio is known to be feasible. However, it turns out that the cocktail problem is different: it …
