A Study Of The Cultural And Geological Environment Of The Magic Mountain Site In Golden, Colorado, Brianna K. Dalessandro
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
The Magic Mountain site, located in Golden, Colorado, has been the subject of intensive academic studies since the 1950s because of its extensive artifact assemblage and long habitation periods. The aim of this thesis was to use ground-penetrating radar, magnetometry, GIS models, and lithic analysis to further study when and how the Magic Mountain site was used during prehistoric times and contextualize a variety of hypotheses about site habitation and migratory patterns of prehistoric people in Colorado.
The results of these analyses indicate the habitation and migratory pattern of the Magic Mountain site was a periodic, but consistent, proximal visitation …

Estimating Black Bear Population Parameters With Spatial Capture Recapture In A High Desert Mountain Ecosystem, Steffen D. Peterson
Cal Poly Humboldt theses and projects
Black bear (Ursus americanus) populations have grown and recolonized historic range in California, and unharvested populations are currently poorly monitored by existing programs. In the Warner Mountains of northeast California, increasing issuance of bear depredation permits has underscored the importance of black bear population monitoring. To study population density, space-use, and demographics of this unharvested population, I established 10 non-invasive sampling clusters, comprising a 3 x 3 arrangement of 4-km2 grid-cells, across a 1,464 km2 study area and monitored hair snares over five 10-day sampling occasions in summer 2018. Fourteen microsatellite and two sex-specific genetic markers …
Historical And Forecasted Kentucky Specific Slope Stability Analyses Using Remotely Retrieved Hydrologic And Geomorphologic Data, Daniel M. Francis
Historical And Forecasted Kentucky Specific Slope Stability Analyses Using Remotely Retrieved Hydrologic And Geomorphologic Data, Daniel M. Francis
Theses and Dissertations--Civil Engineering
Hazard analyses of rainfall-induced landslides have typically been observed to experience a lack of inclusion of measurements of soil moisture within a given soil layer at a site of interest. Soil moisture is a hydromechanical variable capable of both strength gains and reductions within soil systems. However, in situ monitoring of soil moisture at every site of interest is an unfeasible goal. Therefore, spatiotemporal estimates of soil moisture that are representative of in-situ conditions are required for use in subsequent landslide hazard analyses.
This study brings together various techniques for the acquisition, modeling, and forecasting of spatiotemporal retrievals of soil …

Developing Best Practices For The Propagation Of Spartina Alterniflora For Use In Salt Marsh Restortaion, Justin Hinson
Developing Best Practices For The Propagation Of Spartina Alterniflora For Use In Salt Marsh Restortaion, Justin Hinson
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Coastal salt marshes are valuable ecosystems under threat from climate change and sea level rise. Living shorelines offer a promising solution, often incorporating the foundational salt marsh species Spartina alterniflora due to its ability to tolerate natural stressors and maintain sediment stability. However, research suggests that seed-based propagation protocols should be developed on a local scale due to the genetic heterogeneity within and between S. alterniflora populations. Here, we attempt to contribute to the development of one such protocol for coastal Georgia S. alterniflora.
In Fall 2021, seeds were collected bi-monthly from four marshes of varying ocean proximity and …
A Comparison Of Tung Oil Resin Reinforcements Using Fibrous Proteins And Peptides For Biological And Materials Applications, Parker L. Williams
A Comparison Of Tung Oil Resin Reinforcements Using Fibrous Proteins And Peptides For Biological And Materials Applications, Parker L. Williams
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
In this study a tung oil based thermoset was reinforced with collagen and fibroin, and the resulting composites were analyzed for their physical properties. Tung tree seed oil is a great candidate for biobased polymer production because its triglycerides are primarily made of alpha eleostearic acid, a fatty acid with three conjugated carbon-carbon double bonds. These double bonds allow for mechanically strong crosslinking in the polymer. It has been observed that polymerized tung oil forms a gel. This issue has been addressed using divinylbenzene (DVB) and n-butyl methacrylate (BMA) as co-monomers. Similar bio-based polymers have been studied and tend to …

Bryn Mawr College Dissertations and Theses
Mo and W enzymes are ubiquitous in living organisms and crucial for sustaining life. Mo and W enzyme variety is diverse, but they contain a highly conserved aspect of functionality in these enzymes, the pyranopterin-dithiolene (PDT) ligand. A total of eight possible electron redox equivalents occurs between the metal center and PDT, making the molybdenum cofactor (Moco) and the tungsten cofactor (Tuco) the most redox rich cofactors in all of biology. This research focuses on the development of new pterin-dithiolene synthetic modeling systems for Moco. The knowledge gained from the characterization of these compounds is applied to the enzymes, furthering …

Sigmoid Activation-Based Long Short-Term Memory For Time Series Data Classification, Sajal Das
Computer Science Faculty Research & Creative Works
With the enhanced usage of Artificial Intelligence (AI) driven applications, the researchers often face challenges in improving the accuracy of the data classification models, while trading off the complexity. In this paper, we address the classification of time series data using the Long Short-Term Memory (LSTM) network while focusing on the activation functions. While the existing activation functions such as sigmoid and tanh are used as LSTM internal activations, the customizability of these activations stays limited. This motivates us to propose a new family of activation functions, called log-sigmoid, inside the LSTM cell for time series data classification, and analyze …

Preserving Privacy In Image Database Through Bit-Planes Obfuscation, Vishesh K. Tanwar, Ashish Gupta, Sanjay Kumar Madria, Sajal K. Das
Computer Science Faculty Research & Creative Works
The recent surge in computer vision applications has caused visual privacy concerns to people who are either users or exposed to an underlying surveillance system. To preserve their privacy, image obfuscation lays out a strong road through which the usability of images can also be maintained without revealing any visual private information. However, prior solutions are susceptible to reconstruction attacks or produce non-trainable images even by leveraging the obfuscation ways. This paper proposes a novel bit-planes-based image obfuscation scheme, called Bimof, to protect the visual privacy of the user in the images that are input into a recognition-based system. By …
