Numerical Radius, Berezin Number, And Berezin Norm Inequalities For Sums Of Operators, Najla Altwaijry, Kais Feki, Nicusor Minculete
Turkish Journal of Mathematics
The purpose of this article is to explore various inequalities pertaining to the numerical radius of operators in a Hilbert space. Additionally, we present several bounds for the Berezin number and Berezin norm of operators that act on a reproducing kernel Hilbert space. Finally, we establish a necessary and sufficient condition for the triangle inequality related to the Berezin number to hold.

Normalization Techniques For Sequential And Graphical Data, Cole Pospisil
Normalization Techniques For Sequential And Graphical Data, Cole Pospisil
Theses and Dissertations--Mathematics
Normalization methods have proven to be an invaluable tool in the training of deep neural networks. In particular, Layer and Batch Normalization are commonly used to mitigate the risks of exploding and vanishing gradients. This work presents two methods which are related to these normalization techniques. The first method is Batch Normalized Preconditioning (BNP) for recurrent neural networks (RNN) and graph convolutional networks (GCN). BNP has been suggested as a technique for Fully Connected and Convolutional networks for achieving similar performance benefits to Batch Normalization by controlling the condition number of the Hessian through preconditioning on the gradients. We extend …
Geometric And Combinatorial Properties Of Lattice Polytopes Defined From Graphs, Kaitlin Bruegge
Geometric And Combinatorial Properties Of Lattice Polytopes Defined From Graphs, Kaitlin Bruegge
Theses and Dissertations--Mathematics
Polytopes are geometric objects that generalize polygons in the plane and polyhedra in 3-dimensional space. Of particular interest in geometric combinatorics are families of lattice polytopes defined from combinatorial objects, such as graphs. In particular, this dissertation studies symmetric edge polytopes (SEPs), defined from simple undirected graphs. In 2019, Higashitani, Jochemko, and Michalek gave a combinatorial description of the hyperplanes that support facets of a symmetric edge polytope in terms of certain labelings of the underlying graph.
Using this framework, we explore the number of facets that can be attained by the symmetric edge polytopes for graphs with certain structure. …
Factors Influencing Mortality Of Bighorn Sheep (Ovis Canadensis), Emily Moberg
Factors Influencing Mortality Of Bighorn Sheep (Ovis Canadensis), Emily Moberg
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Reintroduced bighorn sheep (Ovis canadensis) in Nebraska faced a devastating pneumonia epizootic resulting in variable ewe reproductive success and poor lamb recruitment in many of the herds. From 2015-2017, no lamb recruitment was observed in the northern Pine Ridge subpopulation and as many as 60% of adults died. This was in stark contrast to the healthier Wildcat Hills herds to the south, where lamb recruitment was estimated to be between 50-70% during the same years. From 2018-2020, we radio-collared and recaptured 76 adult female bighorn sheep from 2 of 3 Pine Ridge herds and 1 of 2 Wildcat Hills herds. …

assisted in mapping bryophyte flora in Mount Baker-Snoqualmie National Park, along LGM (last glacial maximum) spatial boundaries determined by GIS (see
Figure 1). The aim of this research has been to determine the likelihood of an ice age refugium in Barlow Pass, by comparing the proportion of disjunct species to the known ice age refugium, Brooks Peninsula (Figure 2), and the known non-refugial area Cascade Pass (Figure 3). Bryophytes are a group of non-vascular plants, divided into mosses, liverworts, and hornworts. They are amongst the oldest extant lineage of terrestrial plants.
Modulatory Effects Of Deacetylated Sialic Acids (A Sugar Residue) In Nk-Mediated Cytotoxicity And Targeted Therapy By Receptor Tyrosine Kinase Inhibitors, Mathias Tawiah Anim
Modulatory Effects Of Deacetylated Sialic Acids (A Sugar Residue) In Nk-Mediated Cytotoxicity And Targeted Therapy By Receptor Tyrosine Kinase Inhibitors, Mathias Tawiah Anim
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
The complex nature of the biology of cancer is still an unraveling science, yielding several biomarkers that have served as molecular targets for detection and treatment of the disease. How sugars, glycans, play a role has remained relatively uninvestigated. Sialic acid (Sia), a sugar residue on the surface of cells, has been identified as a hallmark of cancer and its progression. Sialic acid can be highly functionalized, but we became interested in acetylated Sias. This functional group is modulated by Sialate O- acetylesterase (encoded by the gene SIAE) and Sialate O-acetyltransferase (encoded by CASD1), enzymes that play a crucial role …
Development And Assessment Of Gamified Process-Oriented Guided Inquiry Learning Activities In Undergraduate Large Lecture Chemistry Courses, Nathan Turner
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Students who take general chemistry and do not perform well are more likely to pursue an alternative degree or remove themselves from STEM curriculum entirely. Poor academic performance and high student attrition rates in general chemistry courses have resulted in the perception of chemistry courses being gatekeepers for students in pursuit of STEM degrees. Process-Oriented Guided Inquiry Learning (POGIL) has shown promising results in both lecture and laboratory teaching on student performance in chemistry while gamification has been used to enhance student learning experiences to help students grasp chemistry concepts. The current project blends two student-centered approaches, gamification and POGIL, …
A Class Of Regression Models For Pairwise Comparisons Of Forensic Handwriting Comparison Systems, Cami M. Fuglsby
A Class Of Regression Models For Pairwise Comparisons Of Forensic Handwriting Comparison Systems, Cami M. Fuglsby
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Handwriting analysis is a complex field largely living in forensic science and the legal realm. One task of a forensic document examiner (FDE) may be to determine the writer(s) of handwritten documents. Automated identification systems (AIS) were built to aid FDEs in their examinations. Part of the uses of these AIS (such as FISH[5] [7],WANDA [6], CEDAR-FOX [17], and FLASHID®2) are tomeasure features about a handwriting sample and to provide the user with a numeric value of the evidence. These systems use their own algorithms and definitions of features to quantify the writing and can be considered a black-box. The …
Sublinear Approximation Schemes For Scheduling Precedence Graphs Of Bounded Depth, Bin Fu, Yumei Huo, Hairong Zhao
Sublinear Approximation Schemes For Scheduling Precedence Graphs Of Bounded Depth, Bin Fu, Yumei Huo, Hairong Zhao
Computer Science Faculty Publications and Presentations
We study the classical scheduling problem on parallel machines %with precedence constraints where the precedence graph has the bounded depth h. Our goal is to minimize the maximum completion time. We focus on developing approximation algorithms that use only sublinear space or sublinear time. We develop the first one-pass streaming approximation schemes using sublinear space when all jobs' processing times differ no more than a constant factor c and the number of machines m is at most 2nϵ3hc. This is so far the best approximation we can have in terms of m, since no polynomial time approximation better than 43 …
Pmp: Privacy-Aware Matrix Profile Against Sensitive Pattern Inference For Time Series, Li Zhang, Jiahao Ding, Yifeng Gao, Jessica Lin
Pmp: Privacy-Aware Matrix Profile Against Sensitive Pattern Inference For Time Series, Li Zhang, Jiahao Ding, Yifeng Gao, Jessica Lin
Computer Science Faculty Publications and Presentations
Recent rapid development of sensor technology has allowed massive time series data to be collected and set foundation for the development of data-driven services and applications. During the process, data sharing is often required to allow modelers to perform specific time series data mining tasks based on the need of data owner. The high resolution of time series data brings new challenges in privacy protection, as meaningful information in high-resolution data shifts from concrete point values to shape-based patterns. Numerous research efforts have found that long shape-based patterns could contain more sensitive information and may potentially be extracted and misused …
Adaptive Multiple Distributed Bidirectional Spiral Path Planning For Foraging Robot Swarms, Qi Lu, Ryan Luna
Adaptive Multiple Distributed Bidirectional Spiral Path Planning For Foraging Robot Swarms, Qi Lu, Ryan Luna
Computer Science Faculty Publications and Presentations
The Distributed Deterministic Spiral Algorithm (DDSA) has shown great foraging efficiency in robot swarms. However, when the number of robots in the swarm increases, scalability becomes a significant bottleneck due to increased collisions among robots, making it challenging to deploy them in the search space (e.g., 20 robots). To address this issue, we propose an adaptive Multiple-Distributed Bidirectional Spiral Algorithm (MDBSA) that enhances scalability. Our proposed algorithm partitions the squared search arena into multiple identical squared regions and assigns robots to regions dynamically based on the number of regions. In each region, a bidirectional spiral search path is planned, and …

Exploring The Role Of Perceived Range Anxiety In Adoption Behavior Of Plugin Electric Vehicles, Fatemeh Nazari, Abolfazl (Kouros) Mohammadian, Thomas Stephens
Civil Engineering Faculty Publications and Presentations
A sustainable solution to negative externalities imposed by road transportation is replacing internal combustion vehicles with electric vehicles (EVs), especially plug-in EV (PEV) encompassing plugin hybrid EV (PHEV) and battery EV (BEV). However, EV market share is still low and is forecast to remain low and uncertain. This shows a research need for an in-depth understanding of EV adoption behavior with a focus on one of the main barriers to the mass EV adoption, which is the limited electric driving range. The present study extends the existing literature in two directions; First, the influence of the psychological aspect of driving …

Recent rapid development of sensor technology has allowed massive fine-grained time series (TS) data to be collected and set the foundation for the development of data-driven services and applications. During the process, data sharing is often involved to allow the third-party modelers to perform specific time series data mining (TSDM) tasks based on the need of data owner. The high resolution of TS brings new challenges in protecting privacy. While meaningful information in high-resolution TS shifts from concrete point values to local shape-based segments, numerous research have found that long shape-based patterns could contain more sensitive information and may potentially …
Autodocking Studies Of Oxygenated Fullerenes As Inhibitors Of The Hiv Protease, Michael Kaminski
Autodocking Studies Of Oxygenated Fullerenes As Inhibitors Of The Hiv Protease, Michael Kaminski
All Student Theses and Dissertations
In a previous study, several oxygenated fullerene compounds were produced by ozonation of C60 (Buckminsterfullerene) and were identified by elemental analysis and by SALI (surface analysis by laser ionization). Some of these compounds, especially a batch, SK-5, a mixture of C60O1-8, were shown to inhibit activities of HIV-Protease with IC50 (concentration for 50% inhibition) of 1 mg/mol in the in-vitro studies. The oxygenated fullerenes were shown to have epoxide, ketones, and hydroxyl functionalities. As expected, C60 interacted with ozone with alkene functionality and not as an aromatic compound. It was postulated that C60O had epoxide functionality, as a product of …

Covert Computation In The Abstract Tile-Assembly Model, Robert M. Alaniz, Timothy Gomez, Andrew Rodriguez, Tim Wylie, David Caballero, Elize Grizzell, Robert Schweller
Computer Science Faculty Publications and Presentations
There have been many advances in molecular computation that offer benefits such as targeted drug delivery, nanoscale mapping, and improved classification of nanoscale organisms. This power led to recent work exploring privacy in the computation, specifically, covert computation in self-assembling circuits. Here, we prove several important results related to the concept of a hidden computation in the most well-known model of self-assembly, the Abstract Tile-Assembly Model (aTAM). We show that in 2D, surprisingly, the model is capable of covert computation, but only with an exponentialsized assembly. We also show that the model is capable of covert computation with polynomial-sized assemblies …
The Mceliece Cryptosystem As A Solution To The Post-Quantum Cryptographic Problem, Isaac Hanna
The Mceliece Cryptosystem As A Solution To The Post-Quantum Cryptographic Problem, Isaac Hanna
Senior Honors Theses
The ability to communicate securely across the internet is owing to the security of the RSA cryptosystem, among others. This cryptosystem relies on the difficulty of integer factorization to provide secure communication. Peter Shor’s quantum integer factorization algorithm threatens to upend this. A special case of the hidden subgroup problem, the algorithm provides an exponential speedup in the integer factorization problem, destroying RSA’s security. Robert McEliece’s cryptosystem has been proposed as an alternative. Based upon binary Goppa codes instead of integer factorization, his cryptosystem uses code scrambling and error introduction to hinder decrypting a message without the private key. This …
Cultivating Health, Not Wealth In The United States' Healthcare System: Comprehensive Revisions For The Orphan Drug Act Of 1983, Kayla Smith
Regis University Student Publications (comprehensive collection)
This thesis explores the way in which the Orphan Drug Act of 1983, originally instituted in response to a lack of treatments for rare diseases in the United States of America, has failed to achieve its initial objectives in the 40 years since its implementation. In evaluating various successful examples of government subsidization programs designed to intervene in private industry, this thesis composes the criterion required for funding-based legislation which maximize market outcomes while minimizing tax-payer burden. An analysis of the synthetic organic chemistry industry – and a case study into the production of a particular orphan treatment for a …
Ecocentric Consumption: : Integrating North American Indigenous Agricultural Practices Into Western Agribusiness Across The U.S., Eva Siath
Regis University Student Publications (comprehensive collection)
Humanity’s displacement from nature is overwhelmingly prevalent in the United States due to centuries of westernization and colonialism, and it largely dwells in the idea of anthropocentrism. While anthropocentrism is often characterized by entitlement to the resources that nature provides, causing massive displacement from the necessary interdependence between humanity and nature, ecocentrism promotes reciprocal interactions between humanity and nature and restores the dynamic exchange necessary for thriving ecosystems. Through comparing North American Indigenous and Westernized European agricultural practices in the United States, this thesis seeks to find the intersection between preconceived ethical obligations to nature and the agricultural interactions and …
Stability Of Structure-Aware Taylor Methods For Tents, Jay Gopalakrishnan, Zheng Sun
Stability Of Structure-Aware Taylor Methods For Tents, Jay Gopalakrishnan, Zheng Sun
Mathematics and Statistics Faculty Publications and Presentations
Structure-aware Taylor (SAT) methods are a class of timestepping schemes designed for propagating linear hyperbolic solutions within a tent-shaped spacetime region. Tents are useful to design explicit time marching schemes on unstructured advancing fronts with built-in locally variable timestepping for arbitrary spatial and temporal discretization orders. The main result of this paper is that an s-stage SAT timestepping within a tent is weakly stable under the time step constraint
∆t ≤ Ch1+1/s , where ∆t is the time step size and h is the spatial mesh size. Improved stability properties are also presented for high-order SAT time discretizations coupled …
Chemical Reaction Networks In A Laplacian Framework, J.J.P. Veerman, T. Whalen-Wagner, Ewan Kummel
Chemical Reaction Networks In A Laplacian Framework, J.J.P. Veerman, T. Whalen-Wagner, Ewan Kummel
Mathematics and Statistics Faculty Publications and Presentations
The study of the dynamics of chemical reactions, and in particular phenomena such as oscillating reactions, has led to the recognition that many dynamical properties of a chemical reaction can be predicted from graph theoretical properties of a certain directed graph, called a Chemical Reaction Network (CRN). In this graph, the edges represent the reactions and the vertices the reacting combinations of chemical substances. In contrast with the classical treatment, in this work, we heavily rely on a recently developed theory of directed graph Laplacians to simplify the traditional treatment of the so-called defi- ciency zero systems of CRN theory. …

Perceptions Of Trail Safety In Humboldt County, California: An Analysis Of Safety Concerns, Factors That Impact Trail Use, And The Value People Place On Trails, Natalie C. Arroyo
Cal Poly Humboldt theses and projects
Trails in Humboldt County, California that are used for both transportation and recreation have myriad community benefits. However, people’s concerns about feeling safe can affect trail use, design, and development, as well as how trails are valued and perceived by residents. There has been a lack of information in Humboldt County about trail safety perceptions despite it being a factor that repeatedly arises in infrastructure planning and funding conversations. My research was focused on answering the following questions: (1) How do Humboldt County trail users perceive their safety on and near trails? (2) What factors affect these perceptions about safety, …

Unmanned Aircraft Systems For Precision Meteorology: An Analysis Of Gnss Position Measurement Error And Embedded Sensor Development, Karla S. Ladino
Theses and Dissertations--Biosystems and Agricultural Engineering
The overarching objective of this research was to enhance our comprehension of the three-dimensional precision of meteorological measurements obtained using small unmanned aircraft systems (UAS). Two complimentary experiments were conducted to achieve this objective.
The first experiment entailed the development and implementation of a system to determine the global navigation satellite system (GNSS) position accuracy on a UAS platform. This system was utilized to assess the static and dynamic accuracy of L1 and L1/L2 GNSS receivers in real-time kinematic (RTK) and non-RTK fix modes. Adjusted two-sample t-tests revealed significant differences in horizontal and vertical error between RTK and non-RTK receivers …

Addressing Soil Carbon Sequestration Response From Multispecies Dairy Forage Systems And Modeling Rangeland Beef Cow Dry Matter Intake Using Precision Enteric Emissions Measurements, Lillian J. Mcfadden
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Regenerative agriculture is a pressing matter for the dairy industry to address cropland sustainability and carbon sequestration. One regenerative management practice that has been identified to help with row crop sustainability for key metrics like soil organic carbon (SOC) is complex covers. When producers use complex covers one of the main challenges is that it takes time to detect a change in SOC. However, simulation models are a tool that can be used to help determine if a regenerative practice is a strategy that gives the best results (i.e., increased SOC) while aligning with long-term production goals. Therefore, our objectives …

Comprehensive Analysis And Forensic Investigation Of Cyanide, Thiocyanate, And 2-Amino-2-Thiazoline-4-Carboxylic Acid In-Ante- And Postmortem Blood Utilizing Advanced Analytical Techniques, Abdullah Hamad Alluhayb
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Cyanide (CN), present as cyanide anion (CN-) or hydrogen cyanide (HCN), is a deadly poison. The main mechanism of CN toxicity is blocking terminal electron transfer, leading to cellular hypoxia, cytotoxic anoxia, and potential death. Determining blood CN concen-trations along with its major metabolite, thiocyanate (SCN-), is crucial. A sensitive method for concurrent detection of CN and SCN- from human ante- and post-mortem blood via liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry (HPLC-MS/MS) analysis was devel-oped. The method involved active microdiffusion with chemical modification using naph-thalene-2,3-dicarboxaldehyde (NDA) and taurine, while monobromobimane (MBB) mod-ification was used for SCN-. The method showed good sensitivity for …

Understanding The Role Of Hba/Hbd Variations On Deep Eutectic Solvent Properties And Activity Using Acetylsalicylic Acid As A Model Drug, Michael Frimpong
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Deep eutectic solvents (DES) are emerging as a versatile class of solvents, attracting considerable attention for their unique solvent properties and potential applications. This study examines the effects of variations in combinations as well as molar ratios of hydrogen-bond acceptor (HBA) and hydrogen-bond donor (HBD) on the structure of DES. It further explores the structure-activity relationship, measured using the rate of acetylsalicylic acid (ASA) degradation in the solvent. The project is based on the model that variations in HBA/HBD combinations and their relative molar ratios impact the solvent structure (hydrogen bonding), observable in physicochemical measurements, infrared (IR), and nuclear magnetic …

Effects Of Agricultural Chemicals On Native Plants Of The Northern Great Plains, Gabrielle Bolwerk
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Agricultural chemicals are ubiquitous on the Northern Great Plains landscape and have negative impacts on non-target plant communities, even at small doses. Northern Great Plains grassland plant communities may experience herbicide drift from agricultural fields or be subject to livestock pharmaceuticals in grazing lands. My research objective was to evaluate if and how native plants are affected by agricultural chemical presence at different concentrations. In Chapter 2, I studied the effect of different concentrations of three common agricultural herbicides (2,4-D, atrazine, and trifluralin) on the germination, emergence, and growth of native plant species of the Northern Great Plains. I performed …

Comparative Analysis Of Membership Inference Attacks In Federated Learning, Saroj Dayal
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Given a federated learning model and a record, a membership inference attack can determine whether this record is part of the model’s training dataset. Federated learning is a machine learning technique that enables different parties to train a model without the need to centralize or share their local data. Membership inference attack risks the private datasets if those datasets are used to train the federated learning model and access to the generated model is available. There is a need to study the membership inference attack in the federated learning setting. In this thesis, we empirically investigated and compared various membership …
