Seagrass meadows are natural carbon storage hotspots at risk from global change threats, and their loss can result in the remineralization of soil carbon stocks and CO2 emissions fueling climate change. Here we used expert elicitation and empirical evidence to assess the risk of CO2 emissions from seagrass soils caused by multiple human-induced, biological and climate change threats. Judgments from 41 experts were synthesized into a seagrass CO2 emission risk score based on vulnerability factors (i.e., spatial scale, frequency, magnitude, resistance and recovery) to seagrass soil organic carbon stocks. Experts perceived that climate change threats (e.g., gradual ocean warming and …

With the recent developments in the Internet of Things (IoT), the amount of data collected has expanded tremendously, resulting in a higher demand for data storage, computational capacity, and real-time processing capabilities. Cloud computing has traditionally played an important role in establishing IoT. However, fog computing has recently emerged as a new field complementing cloud computing due to its enhanced mobility, location awareness, heterogeneity, scalability, low latency, and geographic distribution. However, IoT networks are vulnerable to unwanted assaults because of their open and shared nature. As a result, various fog computing-based security models that protect IoT networks have been developed. …
Mixture Sutoregressive Models For Thai Stock Market Data, Apicha Suthichayapipat
Mixture Sutoregressive Models For Thai Stock Market Data, Apicha Suthichayapipat
Chulalongkorn University Theses and Dissertations (Chula ETD)
The autoregressive (AR) model is one of the most widely used time series forecasting models. The standard AR model was established using the normal distribution, which is violated in some datasets, notably financial data. Therefore, alternative distributions are proposed in the literature, such as the concept of mixture distributions. This concept is also applied to time series modeling in the family of mixture autoregressive models that combine different autoregressive components. Specifically, we consider both the univariate mixture autoregressive model and the multivariate mixture autoregressive model based on the normal and t distributions. In this study, we construct the EM algorithm …

Sedimentological Characteristics Of Storm Deposits Induced By The Tropical Storm Pa Buk Along The Western Coast Of The Gulf Of Thailand, Chanakan Ketthong
Chulalongkorn University Theses and Dissertations (Chula ETD)
Tropical storm Pabuk (TS-Pabuk) attacked the western coast of the Gulf of Thailand (W-GOT) on January 4th, 2019, generating high storm surge levels, high wave height and leaving washover sediments along the coastal areas. Soon after the storm, an initial survey was set up for 44 localions to described sedimentary characteristics, measured beach topography, hydrodynamic intensities and geomorphological conditions. Then, the 4 main locations including Chao Samran beach (CSR), Ban Thung Noi (BTN), Thung Tako (TTK), and Talumphuk (TLP) were selected to study sedimentary detail, ground penetrating radar (GPR) with 3 frequencies and diatom analysis on their storm deposits. These …

Chitosan Blending With Water-Soluble Polymers As Dissolving Microneedles For Controlled Drug Release, Fuad Abdullah Farhan Saleh
Chulalongkorn University Theses and Dissertations (Chula ETD)
Chitosan has gained significant interest due to its ability to film-forming, biodegradability, and biocompatibility, making it suitable for topical and transdermal drug delivery such as fabricating microneedles. In this study, chitosan microneedles were prepared by incorporating polyvinylpyrrolidone (PVP) and polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) in three different ratios (1:1, 2:1, and 3:1 chitosan: polymers) to control drug release. The microneedles were fabricated using a molding method, their mechanical properties were tested using the universal testing machine (UTM), and their skin penetration ability was tested using pig skin (ex vivo). The results indicated that the microneedles exhibited sufficient strength to penetrate the outer …

Analytical Formula For Conditional Moments Of Extended Heston-Cev Hybrid Model With Time-Dependent Parameters, Promsiri Anunak
Chulalongkorn University Theses and Dissertations (Chula ETD)
This thesis proposes an analytical formula for the conditional moments of the extended Heston-CEV hybrid model, which is the combination of the Heston model and the March-Rosenfeld process, also known as the constant elasticity of variance (CEV) process, to model the price dynamics of the underlying asset. The formula is derived by solving a partial differential equation (PDE) that characterizes a two-dimensional process. This Monte Carlo simulation results to ensure its accuracy. Department formula is practical and more comprehensive than the existing results in the literature. The thesis also includes numerical validations by verifying the analytical formula against

Closing The Shell: Gas-Phase Solvation Of Halides By 1,3-Butadiene, Peter D. Watson, Christian T. Haakansson, Hayden T. Robinson, Timothy R. Corkish, James Brookes, Allan J. Mckinley, Duncan A. Wild
Research outputs 2022 to 2026
Gas-phase solvation of halides by 1,3-butadiene has been studied via a combination of photoelectron spectroscopy and density functional theory. Photoelectron spectra for X−⋯(C4H6)n (X=Cl, Br, I where n=1-3, 1–3 and 1–7 respectively) are presented. For all complexes, the calculated structures indicate that butadiene is bound in a bidentate fashion through hydrogen-bonding, with the chloride complex showing the greatest degree of stabilisation of the internal C−C rotation of cis-butadiene. In both Cl− and Br− complexes, the first solvation shell is shown to be at least n = 4 from the vertical detachment energies (VDEs), however for I−, increases in the …

In the face of global biodiversity declines, surveys of beneficial and antagonistic arthropod diversity as well as the ecological services that they provide are increasingly important in both natural and agro-ecosystems. Conventional survey methods used to monitor these communities often require extensive taxonomic expertise and are time-intensive, potentially limiting their application in industries such as agriculture, where arthropods often play a critical role in productivity (e.g. pollinators, pests and predators). Environmental DNA (eDNA) metabarcoding of a novel substrate, crop flowers, may offer an accurate and high throughput alternative to aid in the detection of these managed and unmanaged taxa. Here, …

Seagrass meadows are effective carbon sinks due to high primary production and sequestration in sediments. However, methane (CH4) emissions can partially counteract their carbon sink capacity. Here, we measured diffusive sediment-water and sea-air CO2 and CH4 fluxes in a coastal embayment dominated by Posidonia oceanica in the Mediterranean Sea. High-resolution timeseries observations revealed large spatial and temporal variability in CH4 concentrations (2–36 nM). Lower sea-air CH4 emissions were observed in an area with dense seagrass meadows compared to patchy seagrass. A 6%−40% decrease of CH4 concentration in the surface water around noon indicates that photosynthesis likely limits CH4 fluxes. Sediments …
