Causal Interventional Training For Image Recognition, Wei Qin, Hanwang Zhang, Richang Hong, Ee-Peng Lim, Qianru Sun

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Deep learning models often fit undesired dataset bias in training. In this paper, we formulate the bias using causal inference, which helps us uncover the ever-elusive causalities among the key factors in training, and thus pursue the desired causal effect without the bias. We start from revisiting the process of building a visual recognition system, and then propose a structural causal model (SCM) for the key variables involved in dataset collection and recognition model: object, common sense, bias, context, and label prediction. Based on the SCM, one can observe that there are “good” and “bad” biases. Intuitively, in the image …

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Coal-fired power plays a critical role in China's compliance with the Paris Agreement. This research quantifies China's stranded coal assets under different coal capacity expansion scenarios with an integrated approach and high-precision coal-fired power database. From a top-down perspective, firstly, the pathway of China's coal-fired power capacity consistent with the global 2 degrees C scenario is outlined and then those stranded coal-fired power plants are identified with a bottom-up perspective. Stranded value is estimated based upon a cash flow algorithm. Results show that if coal capacity stabilizes during 2020-2030, China will only incur a sizeable yet manageable stranded asset loss …

Mathematics Faculty Publications

The neighborhood color set of each vertex v in a vertex-colored graph G is defined as the collection of the colors of all the neighbors of v. If there are no two adjacent vertices that have equal neighborhood color sets, then the coloring is called a set coloring of G. The set coloring problem on G refers to the problem of determining its set chromatic number, which refers to the fewest colors using which a set coloring of G may be constructed. In this work, we consider the set coloring problem on graphs obtained from applying middle graph, a unary …

Efficient Approximate Range Aggregation Over Large-Scale Spatial Data Federation, Yexuan Shi, Yongxin Tong, Yuxiang Zeng, Zimu Zhou, Bolin Ding, Lei Chen Jan 2023

Efficient Approximate Range Aggregation Over Large-Scale Spatial Data Federation, Yexuan Shi, Yongxin Tong, Yuxiang Zeng, Zimu Zhou, Bolin Ding, Lei Chen

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Range aggregation is a primitive operation in spatial data applications and there is a growing demand to support such operations over a data federation, where the entire spatial data are separately held by multiple data providers (a.k.a., data silos). Data federations notably increase the amount of data available for data-intensive applications such as smart mobility planning and public health emergency responses. Yet they also challenge the conventional implementation of range aggregation queries because the raw data cannot be shared within the federation and the data partition at each data silo is fixed during query processing. These constraints limit the design …

Spatial Heterogeneity In Sediment And Carbon Accretion Rates Within A Seagrass Meadow Correlated With The Hydrodynamic Intensity, Jiarui Lei, Rachel Schaefer, Phil Colarusso, Alyssa Novak, Juliet C. Simpson, Pere Masqué, Heidi Nepf Jan 2023

Spatial Heterogeneity In Sediment And Carbon Accretion Rates Within A Seagrass Meadow Correlated With The Hydrodynamic Intensity, Jiarui Lei, Rachel Schaefer, Phil Colarusso, Alyssa Novak, Juliet C. Simpson, Pere Masqué, Heidi Nepf

Research outputs 2022 to 2026

The majority of the carbon stored in seagrass sediments originates outside the meadow, such that the carbon storage capacity within a meadow is strongly dependent on hydrodynamic conditions that favor deposition and retention of fine organic matter within the meadow. By extension, if hydrodynamic conditions vary across a meadow, they may give rise to spatial gradients in carbon. This study considered whether the spatial gradients in sediment and carbon accretion rates correlated with the spatial variation in hydrodynamic intensity within a single meadow. Field measurements were conducted in three depth zones across a Zostera marina L. (eelgrass) meadow in Nahant …

Coastal Groundwater-Dependent Ecosystems Are Falling Through Policy Gaps, Madeleine Dyring, Melissa M. Rohde, Ray Froend, Harald Hofmann

Research outputs 2022 to 2026

Coastal groundwater-dependent ecosystems (GDEs), such as wetlands, estuaries and nearshore marine habitats, are biodiversity hotspots that provide valuable ecosystem services to society. However, coastal groundwater and associated ecosystems are under threat from groundwater exploitation and depletion, as well as climate change impacts from sea-level rise and extreme flood and drought events. Despite many well-intentioned policies focused on sustainable groundwater use and species protection, coastal GDEs are falling through gaps generated by siloed policies and as a result, are declining in extent and ecological function. This study summarized then examined policies related to the management of coastal groundwater and connected ecosystems …

There are many advantages to transitioning from conducting marine wildlife surveys via human observers onboard light-aircraft, to capturing aerial imagery using drones. However, it is important to maintain the validity of long-term data series whilst transitioning from observer to imagery surveys. We need to understand how the detection rates of target species in images compare to those collected from observers in piloted aircraft, and the factors influencing detection rates from each platform. We conducted trial ScanEagle drone surveys of dugongs in Shark Bay, Western Australia, covering the full extent of the drone’s range (∼100 km), concurrently with observer surveys, with …

Theses: Doctorates and Masters

The measurement of pH value is crucial parameter in various fields like, drinking water monitoring, food preparation, biomedical and environmental applications. The most common device for pH sensing is the conventional pH glass electrode. While glass electrodes have several advantages, such as Nernstian sensitivity, superior ion selectivity, excellent stability, and extensive operating range, they have several key disadvantages. pH glass electrodes need to be stored in buffer solutions, they are fragile and have limited size and shape, making them impractical for some applications, such as being potentially used as miniature pH sensors for capsule endoscopy and ambulatory esophageal pH monitoring. …

Plant-Herbivore Interactions In A Changing Climate And Implications For Seagrass Resilience, Caitlyn M. O'Dea Jan 2023

Plant-Herbivore Interactions In A Changing Climate And Implications For Seagrass Resilience, Caitlyn M. O'Dea

Theses: Doctorates and Masters

Climate change is affecting herbivore distributions and abundance, resulting in intensified grazing pressure on foundation species such as seagrasses. This, coupled with other, rapid changes in estuarine ecosystems, may threaten the resilience of seagrass. While the overall resilience of seagrasses is generally well-studied, the timeframes of recovery have received comparatively little attention, particularly in temperate estuaries. This study investigated the recovery time of two colonising seagrasses (Halophila ovalis and Ruppia megacarpa) following various intensities of simulated grazing in two southwestern Australian estuaries. Simulated grazing treatments (25%, 50%, 75%, and 100% removal from 1 m2 plots) were applied in field experiments …
