The Impact Of Policy Design On Willingness To Pay For Ecosystem Services From Prairie Strips, Karina Schoengold, Badri Khanal, Taro Mieno, Lisa Schulte Moore Nov 2022

The Impact Of Policy Design On Willingness To Pay For Ecosystem Services From Prairie Strips, Karina Schoengold, Badri Khanal, Taro Mieno, Lisa Schulte Moore

Cornhusker Economics

Ecosystem services from farmland conservation are public good benefits. The value of these benefits is primarily measured using methods that determine the willingness to pay (WTP) for those benefits. Prairie strips, a farmland conservation practice, provide ecosystem services such as improved water quality, soil health, and biodiversity (Schulte et al., 2017). The state of Iowa is a major corn producer and contributes significant amounts of nitrogen and phosphorous to the Gulf of Mexico (Alexander et al., 2008). The development of conventional agricultural systems has also resulted in a significant loss of biodiversity, including a dominant land cover of tallgrass prairie. …

Under New Direction: Using Theatre To Combat The Climate Crisis, Brian Kirsch

Student Scholar Symposium Abstracts and Posters

The Earth is growing unsuitable for human society as we know it at an unprecedented rate. Among the latest in a set of increasingly grim statistics, the atmosphere’s carbon dioxide concentration is now a staggering 150% of its value for most of human history (Stein). This has triggered global warming on track to meet or exceed 1.5 degrees Celsius, which comes with extreme and irreversible changes to the planet (Jackson). However, this information fails to both command its merited attention and spark the urgent action needed to preserve our way of life. Less than half of American voters consider climate …

Bi-Dbar-Approach For A Coupled Shifted Nonlocal Dispersionless System, Junyi Zhu, Kaiwen Shao, Zhijun Qiao Nov 2022

Bi-Dbar-Approach For A Coupled Shifted Nonlocal Dispersionless System, Junyi Zhu, Kaiwen Shao, Zhijun Qiao

School of Mathematical and Statistical Sciences Faculty Publications and Presentations

We propose a Bi-Dbar approach and apply it to the extended coupled shifted nonlocal dispersionless system. We introduce the nonlocal reduction to solve the coupled shifted nonlocal dispersionless system. Since no enough constraint conditions can be found to curb the norming contants in the Dbar data, the “solutions” obtained by the Dbar dressing method, in general, do not admit the coupled shifted nonlocal dispersionless system. In the Bi-Dbar approach to the extended coupled shifted nonlocal dispersionless system, the norming constants are free. The constraint conditions on the norming constants are determined by the general nonlocal reduction, and the solutions of …

Exploring Cathodoluminescence Evident Features Of Tungsten Disulfide, Molybdenum Disulfide, And Tungsten-Sulfide-Selenide, Nathan Mayer Nov 2022

Exploring Cathodoluminescence Evident Features Of Tungsten Disulfide, Molybdenum Disulfide, And Tungsten-Sulfide-Selenide, Nathan Mayer

Undergraduate Theses

Cathodoluminescence (CL) microscopy can be used to characterize the quantum optical behaviors of two-dimensional nanostructures. To investigate this behavior, we mounted flakes of tungsten disulfide (WS2), molybdenum disulfide (MoS2), and tungsten-sulfide-selenide Janus structures (WSSe) on a SiO2 substrate and analyzed these samples under both high vacuum and low H2O vacuum conditions using a scanning electron microscope. We then captured CL and secondary-electron images of the samples at multiple electron-beam energies and currents (5 keV to 30 keV, and 0.5 nA to 5 nA, respectively). We used a range of beam currents and …

High Fidelity Universal Gates Performed On A Continuously-Decoupled Coherence Enhanced Transmon Qubit, Michael Senatore Nov 2022

High Fidelity Universal Gates Performed On A Continuously-Decoupled Coherence Enhanced Transmon Qubit, Michael Senatore

Dissertations - ALL

Decoherence is the primary limiting factor for the utility of modern qubits and qubit networks; most chiefly, pure dephasing which limits the operational time any gate-sequence can produce a high-fidelity result. In this dissertation, I present the results of my experiment, performing fast, high fidelity, universal single-qubit gates, on a qubit which has been decoupled from pure dephasing resulting from environmental noise. This technique can expand operational ranges of qubits–such as allowing the high-coherence operation of a flux-tunable qubit far away from its flux-insensitive sweet-spot; broadening our selection of viable qubits by making otherwise low-coherence qubits operable with high coherence, …

This paper reports on the γ-ray properties of the 2018 Galactic nova V392 Per, spanning photon energies ∼0.1 GeV-100 TeV by combining observations from the Fermi Gamma-ray Space Telescope and the HAWC Observatory. As one of the most rapidly evolving γ-ray signals yet observed for a nova, GeV γ-rays with a power-law spectrum with an index Γ = 2.0 ± 0.1 were detected over 8 days following V392 Per’s optical maximum. HAWC observations constrain the TeV γ-ray signal during this time and also before and after. We observe no statistically significant evidence of TeV γ-ray emission from V392 Per, but …

A Bootstrap Method For A Multiple-Imputation Variance Estimator In Survey Sampling, Lili Yu, Yichuan Zhao Nov 2022

A Bootstrap Method For A Multiple-Imputation Variance Estimator In Survey Sampling, Lili Yu, Yichuan Zhao

Department of Biostatistics, Epidemiology, and Environmental Health Sciences Faculty Publications

Rubin’s variance estimator of the multiple imputation estimator for a domain mean is not asymptotically unbiased. Kim et al. derived the closed-form bias for Rubin’s variance estimator. In addition, they proposed an asymptotically unbiased variance estimator for the multiple imputation estimator when the imputed values can be written as a linear function of the observed values. However, this needs the assumption that the covariance of the imputed values in the same imputed dataset is twice that in the different imputed datasets. In this study, we proposed a bootstrap variance estimator that does not need this assumption. Both theoretical argument and …

Portal: Portal Widget For Remote Target Acquisition And Control In Immersive Virtual Environments, Donguyn Han, Donghoon Kim, Isaac Cho

Computer Science Student Research

This paper introduces PORTAL (POrtal widget for Remote Target Acquisition and controL) that allows the user to interact with out-of-reach objects in a virtual environment. We describe the PORTAL interaction technique for placing a portal widget and interacting with target objects through the portal. We conduct two formal user studies to evaluate PORTAL for selection and manipulation functionalities. The results show PORTAL supports participants to interact with remote objects successfully and precisely. Following that, we discuss its potential and limitations, and future works.

Comparing Past And Future Drought And Surplus Periods In The Colorado River Basin, Rama Bedri Nov 2022

Comparing Past And Future Drought And Surplus Periods In The Colorado River Basin, Rama Bedri

Student Scholar Symposium Abstracts and Posters

The Colorado River Basin is crucial to the Western United States, providing water for seven states and Mexico. Historical and future periods of drought and surplus are analyzed in 17 Colorado River stations. Unimpaired streamflow data are evaluated from the U.S. Geological Survey, Bureau of Reclamation, and Coupled Modeled Intercomparison Projection 5 from 1950-2099. Future projections are based on eight climate scenarios. Four climate models (HadGEM2-ES, CNRM-CM5, CanESM2, MI-ROC5) are observed at Representative Concentration Pathways (RCP) 4.5 and 8.5 emission scenarios. Furthermore, the ensemble water year means of the four models are analyzed. The durations of drought or surplus, magnitudes, …

Increasing Use Of Natural And Nature-Based Features To Build Resilience To Storm-Driven Flooding, Final Report, Center For Coastal Resources Management, Virginia Institute Of Marine Science, Pamela Mason, Jessica Hendricks, Julie Herman, Karen Duhring, Carl Hershner

Reports

In coastal Virginia today, local governments are dealing with recurrent flooding driven by coastal storms, exacerbated by rising sea level and increased frequency of intense rain events. At the same time, they are confronted with increasing demands on limited resources to address issues coastal flooding in concert with water quality, wetlands management, shoreline erosion, habitat, and community needs such as infrastructure, flood insurance and open space. One solution is to maximize the protection of existing and implement new natural and nature-based features (NNBFs) to capitalize on the provision of multiple benefits to address many of these coastal issues.

Boost The Lead Conversion Efficiency For The Synthesis Of Colloidal 2d Pbs Nanosheets, Tharaka Mds Weeraddana, Adam Roach, Shashini M. Premathilaka, Yiteng Tang, Jordan Fox, Liangfeng Sun

Physics and Astronomy Faculty Publications

In the synthesis of colloidal PbS nanosheets, the supernatant of the reaction solution is reused to boost the lead conversion efficiency. It doubles the conversion efficiency of the lead precursors to the PbS nanosheets. The nanosheets synthesized by reusing the supernatant have similar morphology, nearly identical thickness, and optical properties as the original ones, confirmed by transmission electron microscopy, X-ray diffraction, and photoluminescence spectroscopy. This method reduces the toxic Pb-containing waste during the synthesis, a step toward the green and scalable synthesis of colloidal 2D PbS nanosheets.

Near-Ir Laser Ablation Of Simulated Radiologically Contaminated Oxides On Carbon Steel Feeder Pipes, Thao Viet Do Nov 2022

Near-Ir Laser Ablation Of Simulated Radiologically Contaminated Oxides On Carbon Steel Feeder Pipes, Thao Viet Do

Electronic Thesis and Dissertation Repository

As nuclear power plants age and retire from service, many countries face significant challenges concerning the safe long-term storage and disposal of large volumes of low and intermediate level radioactive wastes (L&ILW). The volumes of metallic waste are of particular concern, as when metal corrodes it produces hydrogen that could lead to pressure build-up in interim storage and disposal. In Canada, a significant fraction of the metallic wastes for Canada Deuterium Uranium (CANDU) nuclear reactors are out-of-core reactor components, such as carbon steel (CS) feeder pipes. The radioactive contamination is expected to be largely confined to the surface oxide layers …

An Investigation Into Whitening Loss For Self-Supervised Learning, Xi Weng, Lei Huang, Lei Zhao, Rao Muhammad Anwer, Salman Khan, Fahad Shahbaz Khan

Computer Vision Faculty Publications

A desirable objective in self-supervised learning (SSL) is to avoid feature collapse. Whitening loss guarantees collapse avoidance by minimizing the distance between embeddings of positive pairs under the conditioning that the embeddings from different views are whitened. In this paper, we propose a framework with an informative indicator to analyze whitening loss, which provides a clue to demystify several interesting phenomena as well as a pivoting point connecting to other SSL methods. We reveal that batch whitening (BW) based methods do not impose whitening constraints on the embedding, but they only require the embedding to be full-rank. This full-rank constraint …
