Single-Crystal Elasticity Of Earth’S Mantle Transition Zone Minerals And High Pressure-Temperature Phase Equilibrium Experiments On Martian Basalts, Wenyi Zhou Nov 2022

Single-Crystal Elasticity Of Earth’S Mantle Transition Zone Minerals And High Pressure-Temperature Phase Equilibrium Experiments On Martian Basalts, Wenyi Zhou

Earth and Planetary Sciences ETDs

Wadsleyite and ringwoodite are major minerals in the Earth’s Mantle Transition Zone. Global and local seismic studies have detected strong lateral variations in seismic velocity and anisotropy in the Mantle Transition Zone, reflecting temperature and possible composition variations. Interpretation of these seismic observations requires knowledge of thermoelastic properties of wadsleyite and ringwoodite with different compositions (water and Fe contents) under high pressure-temperature conditions. In this dissertation, we have measured single-crystal elastic properties of wadsleyite and ringwoodite under high pressure-temperature conditions by Brillouin spectroscopy. Based on our measurements and previous experimental results, we further model the effects of water and Fe …

Held At Bay: A Case Study Of A Lake Community’S Effort To Prevent A Zebra Mussel Invasion, Benjamin Breske Nov 2022

Held At Bay: A Case Study Of A Lake Community’S Effort To Prevent A Zebra Mussel Invasion, Benjamin Breske

Department of Environmental Studies: Undergraduate Student Theses

This case study was completed in a lake community in the upper midwestern United States. It seeks to understand the social factors that allowed a lake community to establish an effort to protect against a zebra mussel invasion, as well as the perceptions of the different stakeholders and the steps they took to get the effort going. Rural community action is important for the sustainability of many of the world’s natural resources as these communities are often the first line of defense. Understanding how efforts like this one come together is vital for creating similar efforts elsewhere. I conducted a …

Evaluating Our Reliance On Rare Earth Minerals And Platinum Group Metals Over The Period Of 2012 To 2021, Ryan Smith Nov 2022

Evaluating Our Reliance On Rare Earth Minerals And Platinum Group Metals Over The Period Of 2012 To 2021, Ryan Smith

Spring Showcase for Research and Creative Inquiry

Rare Earth Elements (REE’s) are minerals used in our everyday lives. They can be found in our household appliances, phones, computers, cars, as part of wind turbines and solar panels. The US relies on imports of these rare earths from several other countries (e.g. China, Estonia, Malaysia, and Japan) as we cannot mine a majority of the minerals (e.g. cerium, lanthanum, europium, etc) domestically. Since the year 2012, the US has imported approximately 3,000 metric tons of rare earths, and in recent years, this number significantly increased. As of 2021, the US now imports approximately 43,000 metric tons of rare …

Resolving Galactic Binaries Using A Network Of Space-Borne Gravitational Wave Detectors, Xue-Hao Zhang, Shao-Dong Zhao, Soumya D. Mohanty, Yu-Xiao Liu Nov 2022

Resolving Galactic Binaries Using A Network Of Space-Borne Gravitational Wave Detectors, Xue-Hao Zhang, Shao-Dong Zhao, Soumya D. Mohanty, Yu-Xiao Liu

Physics and Astronomy Faculty Publications and Presentations

Extracting gravitational wave (GW) signals from individual Galactic binaries (GBs) against their self-generated confusion noise is a key data analysis challenge for space-borne detectors operating in the ≈0.1 to ≈10  mHz range. Given the likely prospect that there will be multiple such detectors, namely Laser Interferometer Space Antenna (LISA), Taiji, and Tianqin, with overlapping operational periods in the next decade, it is important to examine the extent to which the joint analysis of their data can benefit GB resolution and parameter estimation. To investigate this, we use realistic simulated LISA and Taiji data containing the set of 30×106 GBs used …

Soil Microbial Communities Vary In Composition And Functional Strategy Across Soil Aggregate Size Class Regardless Of Tillage, Lukas T. Bernhardt, Richard G. Smith, Andrew S. Grandy, Jessica E. Mackay, Nicholas D. Warren, Kevin M. Geyer, Jessica G. Ernakovich Nov 2022

Soil Microbial Communities Vary In Composition And Functional Strategy Across Soil Aggregate Size Class Regardless Of Tillage, Lukas T. Bernhardt, Richard G. Smith, Andrew S. Grandy, Jessica E. Mackay, Nicholas D. Warren, Kevin M. Geyer, Jessica G. Ernakovich

Faculty Publications

The physicochemical environment within aggregates controls the distribution of carbon and microbial communities in soils. Agricultural management, such as tillage, can disrupt aggregates and the microscale habitat provided to microorganisms, thus altering microbial community dynamics. Categorizing microbial communities into life history strategies with shared functional traits—as has been done to understand plant community structure for decades—can illuminate how the soil physicochemical environment constrains the membership and activity of microbial communities. We conducted an aggregate scale survey of microbial community composition and function through the lens of the yield–acquisition–stress (Y–A–S) tolerator life history framework. Soils collected from a 7-year tillage experiment …

Most Recent Rupture On The Boulder Creek Fault Triggered Bedrock Landsliding In The Nooksack Watershed, Whatcom County, Washington, Abigail Catherine Underwood Nov 2022

Most Recent Rupture On The Boulder Creek Fault Triggered Bedrock Landsliding In The Nooksack Watershed, Whatcom County, Washington, Abigail Catherine Underwood

Dissertations and Theses

Catastrophic bedrock landslides with volumes ranging from 106 to 108 m3 contribute to rapid landscape evolution, often resulting in erosion rates that exceed the long-term average rates caused by tectonic uplift. Understanding the spatiotemporal trends of large bedrock landslides helps us understand previous drivers of landscape evolution as well as predict how the landscape will respond in the future. The Nooksack Watershed, Whatcom County, Washington, is particularly susceptible to large slope failures because of its high relief, seismic activity, local geology, and relatively abundant precipitation. Specifically, folded and faulted bedrock structures conducive to landsliding in addition to …

Driver Behavior Analysis Based On Real On-Road Driving Data In The Design Of Advanced Driving Assistance Systems, Nima Khairdoost Nov 2022

Driver Behavior Analysis Based On Real On-Road Driving Data In The Design Of Advanced Driving Assistance Systems, Nima Khairdoost

Electronic Thesis and Dissertation Repository

The number of vehicles on the roads increases every day. According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), the overwhelming majority of serious crashes (over 94 percent) are caused by human error. The broad aim of this research is to develop a driver behavior model using real on-road data in the design of Advanced Driving Assistance Systems (ADASs). For several decades, these systems have been a focus of many researchers and vehicle manufacturers in order to increase vehicle and road safety and assist drivers in different driving situations. Some studies have concentrated on drivers as the main actor in …

Developing Carbon Quantum Dots As A Luminescent Material And Revisiting Ecl And Led Absolute Measurement Methods, Jonathan Ralph Adsetts Nov 2022

Developing Carbon Quantum Dots As A Luminescent Material And Revisiting Ecl And Led Absolute Measurement Methods, Jonathan Ralph Adsetts

Electronic Thesis and Dissertation Repository

Luminescent materials play increasingly important roles in our lives. Improvements in these materials’ quantum efficiencies (QEs), costs and toxicity can greatly reduce the power consumption, price and environmental damage to the planet, respectively. Carbon quantum dots (CQDs) and luminescent materials exhibiting thermally activated delayed fluorescence (TADF) are two interesting materials in these aspects. Furthermore, measurements on electrochemiluminescence (ECL) and electroluminescence of these luminescent materials can quickly evaluate their performance for many applications. In this thesis, controlled CQD syntheses are revealed beneficial to luminescent materials applications. Their film ECL demonstrated relatively stable anionic and cationic radicals leading to high emission at …

Investigation Of Laser And Nonlinear Properties Of Anderson Localizing Optical Fibers, Cody Ryan Bassett Nov 2022

Investigation Of Laser And Nonlinear Properties Of Anderson Localizing Optical Fibers, Cody Ryan Bassett

Optical Science and Engineering ETDs

In this dissertation, I investigate the possibility of lasing and nonlinear phenomena in completely solid-state transverse Anderson localizing optical fibers (TALOFs). I examine three areas within this range of topics. The research in nonlinear phenomena focuses on four-wave mixing (FWM). FWM is of high interest in TALOFs due to the fact that guided localized modes of the fiber each have different propagation constants, and thus unique possible FWM pairs can be generated from the same input pump beam. I demonstrate the generation of FWM in the TALOF by pumping it with 532 nm light into a localized mode and observing …

Convexity Of Regularized Optimal Transport Dissimilarity Measures For Signed Signals, Christian P. Fowler Nov 2022

Convexity Of Regularized Optimal Transport Dissimilarity Measures For Signed Signals, Christian P. Fowler

Mathematics & Statistics ETDs

Debiased Sinkhorn divergence (DS divergence) is a distance function of

regularized optimal transport that measures the dissimilarity between two

probability measures of optimal transport. This thesis analyzes the advantages of

using DS divergence when compared to the more computationally expensive

Wasserstein distance as well as the classical Euclidean norm. Specifically, theory

and numerical experiments are used to show that Debiased Sinkhorn divergence

has geometrically desirable properties such as maintained convexity after data

normalization. Data normalization is often needed to calculate Sinkhorn

divergence as well as Wasserstein distance, as these formulas only accept

probability distributions as inputs and do not directly …

Theoretical Studies Of Molecule-Surface Interactions And Dynamics, Yingqi Wang Nov 2022

Theoretical Studies Of Molecule-Surface Interactions And Dynamics, Yingqi Wang

Chemistry and Chemical Biology ETDs

Gas-surface scattering involves the conversion of energy in different forms in the impinging molecule, possible bond breaking and forming, and the energy transfer across gas-solid interface. Possible energy dissipation channels include adiabatic energy transfer to the motion of surface phonons and non-adiabatic interactions with surface electron-hole pairs. A complete understanding of the interplay of energy dissipation and physical/chemical changes in the molecule is vital for many important applications such as materials fabrication and heterogenous catalysis.

Gas-surface encounters may occur where non-adiabatic effects are negligible. Two such systems were investigated, both with ample experimental data. One is concerned with the scattering …
