Plasmon Damping Rates In Coulomb-Coupled 2d Layers In A Heterostructure, Dipendra Dahal, Godfrey Gumbs, Andrii Iurov, Chin-Sen Ting Nov 2022

Plasmon Damping Rates In Coulomb-Coupled 2d Layers In A Heterostructure, Dipendra Dahal, Godfrey Gumbs, Andrii Iurov, Chin-Sen Ting

Publications and Research

The Coulomb excitations of charge density oscillation are calculated for a double-layer heterostructure. Specifically, we consider two-dimensional (2D) layers of silicene and graphene on a substrate. From the obtained surface response function, we calculated the plasmon dispersion relations, which demonstrate how the Coulomb interaction renormalizes the plasmon frequencies. Most importantly, we have conducted a thorough investigation of how the decay rates of the plasmons in these heterostructures are affected by the Coulomb coupling between different types of two- dimensional materials whose separations could be varied. A novel effect of nullification of the silicene band gap is noticed when graphene is …

Volcano And Tectonic Hazard Modeling Using Interdisciplinary Geophysical And Geodetic Methods, Mitchell Scott Hastings Nov 2022

Volcano And Tectonic Hazard Modeling Using Interdisciplinary Geophysical And Geodetic Methods, Mitchell Scott Hastings

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

Volcanic and tectonic hazards such as volcanic eruptions, earthquakes and tsunamis present risks to about ~45% of the global population. They have caused at least 1.5 trillion dollars in damages worldwide since the start of the 20th century, and the costs are accelerating as population increases. In this dissertation, new data are combined with existing information and novel modeling approaches to quantify volcanic, earthquake and tsunami hazards.

The Blackfoot Reservoir Volcanic Field (BRVF) is a bimodal volcanic field on southeastern margin of the Eastern Snake River Plain in Idaho. In the BRVF, gravity anomalies reveal two shallow silicic intrusions that …

An Empirical Study Of Artifacts And Security Risks In The Pre-Trained Model Supply Chain, Wenxin Jiang, Nicholas Synovic, Rohan Sethi, Aryan Indarapu, Matt Hyattt, Taylor R. Schorlemmer, George K. Thiruvathukal, James C. Davis

Computer Science: Faculty Publications and Other Works

Deep neural networks achieve state-of-the-art performance on many tasks, but require increasingly complex architectures and costly training procedures. Engineers can reduce costs by reusing a pre-trained model (PTM) and fine-tuning it for their own tasks. To facilitate software reuse, engineers collaborate around model hubs, collections of PTMs and datasets organized by problem domain. Although model hubs are now comparable in popularity and size to other software ecosystems, the associated PTM supply chain has not yet been examined from a software engineering perspective.

We present an empirical study of artifacts and security features in 8 model hubs. We indicate the potential …

Faculty and Staff Scholarship

Gas-phase metallicities of galaxies are typically measured through auroral or nebular emission lines, but metallicity also leaves an imprint on the overall spectral energy distribution (SED) of a galaxy and can be estimated through SED fitting. We use the PROSPECT SED fitting code with a flexible parametric star formation history and an evolving metallicity history to self-consistently measure metallicities, stellar mass, and other galaxy properties for 90 000 galaxies from the Deep Extragalactic VIsible Legacy Survey (DEVILS) and Galaxy and Mass Assembly (GAMA) survey. We use these to trace the evolution of the mass–metallicity relation (MZR) and show that the …

Core-Collapse Supernova Constraint On The Origin Of Sterile Neutrino Dark Matter Via Neutrino Self-Interactions, Yu-Ming Chen, Manibrata Sen, Walter Tangarife, Douglas Tuckler, Yue Zhang Nov 2022

Core-Collapse Supernova Constraint On The Origin Of Sterile Neutrino Dark Matter Via Neutrino Self-Interactions, Yu-Ming Chen, Manibrata Sen, Walter Tangarife, Douglas Tuckler, Yue Zhang

Physics: Faculty Publications and Other Works

Novel neutrino self-interaction can open up viable parameter space for the relic abundance of sterile-neutrino dark matter (SvDM). In this work, we constrain the relic target using core-collapse supernova which features the same fundamental process and a similar environment to the early universe era when SvDM is dominantly produced. We present a detailed calculation of the effects of a massive scalar mediated neutrino self-interaction on the supernova cooling rate, including the derivation of the thermal potential in the presence of non-zero chemical potentials from plasma species. Our results demonstrate that the supernova cooling argument can cover …

Misfit-Generated Structural And Optical Anisotropies Of The Natural Mos2-Pbs Van Der Waals Heterostructure Merelaniite, Luca Bindi, Arindam Dasgupta, Pinaki Mukherjee, Jie Gao, Xiaodong Yang, John Jaszczak Nov 2022

Misfit-Generated Structural And Optical Anisotropies Of The Natural Mos2-Pbs Van Der Waals Heterostructure Merelaniite, Luca Bindi, Arindam Dasgupta, Pinaki Mukherjee, Jie Gao, Xiaodong Yang, John Jaszczak

Michigan Tech Publications

Significant efforts developing MoS2-PbS-based heterostructure devices with several different architectures show promise for photosensor, solar cell, and chemical sensor applications. Merelaniite (Mo4Pb4VSbS15) is a newly discovered natural van der Waals heterostructure of the cylindrite type, composed predominantly of heavily modulated pseudotetragonal PbS layers and pseudohexagonal MoS2 layers with large misfit-induced anisotropy. For an incommensurate modulated structure, the refined structural model from single-crystal x-ray diffraction analysis is in reasonable agreement with the results obtained by high-resolution scanning transmission electron microscopy, especially in light of the fact that that the two isolated single-crystal domains used for the x-ray and electron diffraction experiments …

Post-Wildfire Flood Inundation Modelling In Southern California: Implications For Dominant Processes And Parameter Identification, Francisca Olmos De Aguilera Nov 2022

Post-Wildfire Flood Inundation Modelling In Southern California: Implications For Dominant Processes And Parameter Identification, Francisca Olmos De Aguilera

FIU Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Wildfires produce large runoff volumes, sometimes in the form of debris flows (water-laden slurries of soil and rock that move rapidly through channels in steep landscapes) in response to moderate to severe precipitation events. For instance, in Santa Barbara and Ventura Counties following the 2017 Thomas Fire, on January 9th, 2018, an intense atmospheric river flood resulted in a series of destructive water and debris flows causing major damage to life and property. Inundation models that accurately parameterize and simulate hydrologic processes are in demand for post-wildfire flood susceptible regions like Southern California. This study utilizes the physics-based Gridded Surface …

An Approach To The Gaussian Rbf Kernels Via Fock Spaces, Daniel Alpay, Fabrizio Colombo, Kamal Diki, Irene Sabadini Nov 2022

An Approach To The Gaussian Rbf Kernels Via Fock Spaces, Daniel Alpay, Fabrizio Colombo, Kamal Diki, Irene Sabadini

Mathematics, Physics, and Computer Science Faculty Articles and Research

We use methods from the Fock space and Segal–Bargmann theories to prove several results on the Gaussian RBF kernel in complex analysis. The latter is one of the most used kernels in modern machine learning kernel methods and in support vector machine classification algorithms. Complex analysis techniques allow us to consider several notions linked to the radial basis function (RBF) kernels, such as the feature space and the feature map, using the so-called Segal–Bargmann transform. We also show how the RBF kernels can be related to some of the most used operators in quantum mechanics and time frequency analysis; specifically, …

The anion exchange of the halides, Br and I, is demonstrated through the direct mixing of two pure perovskite quantum dot solutions, CsPbBr3 and CsPbI3, and is shown to be both facile and result in a completely alloyed single phase mixed halide perovskite. Anion exchange is also observed in an interlayer printing method utilizing the pure, unalloyed perovskite solutions and a commercial inkjet printer. The halide exchange was confirmed by optical absorption spectroscopy, photoluminescent spectroscopy, X-ray diffraction, and X-ray photoemission spectroscopy characterization and indicates that alloying is thermodynamically favorable, while the formation of a clustered alloy is …

Using Gis-Based Land Use Strategies To Minimize The Impacts Of Urbanization On Agricultural Land And Forest Cover: Case Study Of The City Of Limbe, Cameroon, Lucy Ebude Deba Enomah

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

Urbanization is one of the most dominant phenomena of the 21st century; it is propelled by natural growth and rural-to-urban migration. This latter is typically a product of rural residents moving to urban centres in search of economic opportunities. This phenomenon is accompanied by immense land use and cover changes – predominantly agricultural and forest lands to urban land uses such as buildings and infrastructure. The goal of this research was to contribute to efforts to minimize the impacts of urbanization on agricultural land and forest cover in Limbe, Cameroon, and to develop GIS-based strategies to allocate suitable land for …

Development Of Lipidated Antimicrobial Polycarbonates, Ruixuan Gao Nov 2022

Development Of Lipidated Antimicrobial Polycarbonates, Ruixuan Gao

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

Antimicrobial resistance is a global challenge owing to the lack of discovering effective antibiotic agents. Antimicrobial polymers containing the cationic groups and hydrophobic groups which mimic natural host-defense peptides (HDPs) show great promise in combating bacteria. Herein, we report the synthesis of lipidated polycarbonates bearing primary amino groups and hydrophobic moieties (including both the terminal lipid alkyl chain and hydrophobic groups in the sequences) by ring-opening polymerization. The hydrophobic/hydrophilic group ratios were adjusted deliberately and the lengths of the lipid tails at the end of the polymers were modified to achieve the optimized combination for the lead polymers, which exhibited …

Microbiome Diversity And Metabolic Capacity Determines The Trophic Ecology Of The Holobiont In Caribbean Sponges, Michael P. Lesser, M. Sabrina Pankey, Marc Slattery, Keir J. Macartney, Deborah J. Gochfeld

School of Earth, Environmental, and Marine Sciences Faculty Publications and Presentations

Sponges are increasingly recognized as an ecologically important taxon on coral reefs, representing significant biomass and biodiversity where sponges have replaced scleractinian corals. Most sponge species can be divided into two symbiotic states based on symbiont community structure and abundance (i.e., the microbiome), and are characterized as high microbial abundance (HMA) or low microbial abundance (LMA) sponges. Across the Caribbean, sponge species of the HMA or LMA symbiotic states differ in metabolic capacity, as well as their trophic ecology. A metagenetic analysis of symbiont 16 S rRNA and metagenomes showed that HMA sponge microbiomes are more functionally diverse than LMA …

Department of Paediatrics and Child Health

Numerous safe and effective coronavirus disease 2019 vaccines have been developed worldwide that use various delivery technologies and engineering strategies. We show here that vaccines containing prefusion-stabilizing S mutations elicit antibody responses in humans with enhanced recognition of S and the S1 subunit relative to postfusion S as compared with vaccines lacking these mutations or natural infection. Prefusion S and S1 antibody binding titers positively and equivalently correlated with neutralizing activity, and depletion of S1-directed antibodies completely abrogated plasma neutralizing activity. We show that neutralizing activity is almost entirely directed to the S1 subunit and that variant cross-neutralization is mediated …
