Hyperbolic metamaterials have been demonstrated to have special potential in their linear response, but the extent of their non-linear response has not been extensively modeled or measured. In this work, novel non-linear behavior of an ITO/SiO2 layered hyperbolic metamaterial is modeled and experimentally confirmed, specifically a change in the sign of the non-linear absorption with intensity. This behavior is tunable and can be achieved with a simple one-dimensional layered design. Fabrication was performed with physical vapor deposition, and measurements were conducted using the Z-scan technique. Potential applications include tunable optical switches, optical limiters, and tunable components of laser sources.

Modern organizations need effective ways to assess cybersecurity risk. Successful cyber attacks can result in data breaches, which may inflict significant loss of money, time, and public trust. Small businesses and non-profit organizations have limited resources to invest in cybersecurity controls and often do not have the in-house expertise to assess their risk. Cyber threat actors also vary in sophistication, motivation, and effectiveness. This paper builds on the previous work of Lerums et al., who presented an AnyLogic model for simulating aspects of a cyber attack and the efficacy of controls in a generic enterprise network. This paper argues that …

The device concept of ferroelectric-based negative capacitance (NC) transistors offers a promising route for achieving energyefficient logic applications that can outperform the conventional semiconductor technology, while viable operation mechanisms remain a central topic of debate. In this work, we report steep slope switching in MoS2 transistors back-gated by single-layer polycrystalline PbZr0.35Ti0.65O3. The devices exhibit current switching ratios up to 8 × 106 within an ultra-low gate voltage window of Vg = ±0:5 V and subthreshold swing (SS) as low as 9.7 mV decade−1 at room temperature, transcending the 60 mV decade …

In the study of microbial life, microscopy plays a unique role due to its ability to detect ordered structure, motility, and fluorescence signals. As such it has also recently gained attention in the context of searching for extant life on distant Solar System bodies bearing liquid water. In this paper we introduce a multimodal volumetric microscopy system for potential future spaceflight missions that combines digital holographic microscopy (DHM) and volume fluorescence imager (VFI), which are volumetric imaging methods that provide highresolution, high-throughput examination of liquid samples. DHM provides information on the absorption, morphology, and motility of imaged objects without requiring …

Climate Change Impacts On Groundwater In Mapc Communities, Jayne F. Knott, Paul Kirshen, Ellen Douglas
School for the Environment Publications
Groundwater is important for human health and the environment but has often been overlooked in the development of climate change adaptation strategies. This is because groundwater is rarely visible, and because changes in groundwater levels are not as dramatic as extreme flooding events, coastal storms, and storm surge. The importance of groundwater for drinking water, natural resources, and streamflow is well documented. Groundwater levels are also important considerations in the design of pavements, underground infrastructure, foundations, on-site wastewater treatment systems, and in the remediation of hazardous waste disposal areas. Groundwater is especially important in the wet northeast, where groundwater levels …

'Flux+Mutability': A Conditional Generative Approach To One-Class Classification And Anomaly Detection, Cristiano Fanelli, James Giroux, Z. Papandreou
Arts & Sciences Articles
Anomaly Detection is becoming increasingly popular within the experimental physics community. At experiments such as the Large Hadron Collider, anomaly detection is growing in interest for finding new physics beyond the Standard Model. This paper details the implementation of a novel Machine Learning architecture, called Flux+Mutability, which combines cutting-edge conditional generative models with clustering algorithms. In the 'flux' stage we learn the distribution of a reference class. The 'mutability' stage at inference addresses if data significantly deviates from the reference class. We demonstrate the validity of our approach and its connection to multiple problems spanning from one-class classification to anomaly …

Manufacturability And Analysis Of Topologically Optimized Continuous Fiber Reinforced Composites, Jesus A. Ferrand
Manufacturability And Analysis Of Topologically Optimized Continuous Fiber Reinforced Composites, Jesus A. Ferrand
Doctoral Dissertations and Master's Theses
Researchers are unlocking the potential of Continuous Fiber Reinforced Composites for producing components with greater strength-to-weight ratios than state of the art metal alloys and unidirectional composites. The key is the emerging technology of topology optimization and advances in additive manufacturing. Topology optimization can fine tune component geometry and fiber placement all while satisfying stress constraints. However, the technology cannot yet robustly guarantee manufacturability. For this reason, substantial post-processing of an optimized design consisting of manual fiber replacement and subsequent Finite Element Analysis (FEA) is still required.
To automate this post-processing in two dimensions, two (2) algorithms were developed. The …

Recommendation explanations help to make sense of recommendations, increasing the likelihood of adoption. Here, we are interested in mining product textual data, an unstructured data type, coming from manufacturers, sellers, or consumers, appearing in many places including title, summary, description, review, question and answers, etc., can be a rich source of information to explain the recommendation. As the explanation task could be decoupled from that of recommendation objective, we can categorize recommendation explanation into integrated approach, that uses a single interpretable model to produce both recommendation and explanation, or pipeline approach, that uses a post-hoc explanation model to produce explanation …

Valuation Of Options In A High Volatile Regime Switching Market, Tasnim Mazen Sharif Alhamad
Valuation Of Options In A High Volatile Regime Switching Market, Tasnim Mazen Sharif Alhamad
Theses
Financial modeling by Stochastic Differential Equations-SDEs with regime-switching has been utilized to allow moving from one economic state to another. The aim of this thesis is to tackle the pricing of European options under a regime-switching model where the volatility is augmented. Regime-switching models are more realistic since they encompass the effect of an external event on the underlying asset prices. But they are challenging, considering in addition increased volatility in the model will for sure make the option pricing problem more complicated and its solution may not exist analytically. Numerical methods for finance could be very helpful in this …
Orbit Propagation And Determination Algorithms For Satellite Ground Stations, Shamma Esmaeel Jamali
Orbit Propagation And Determination Algorithms For Satellite Ground Stations, Shamma Esmaeel Jamali
Theses
The satellite orbital parameters are essential for satellite operations. With these parameters, it is possible to estimate the satellite position in the recent past and near future, which is essential to effectively plan satellite operations and associate satellite telemetry with geographical locations.
However, for small or medium satellite operators who do not possess the infrastructure required to track their satellites, the problem of determining the satellite orbit is problematic. To access the orbit for their satellites, these organizations have to rely on third parties such as Celestrak. These entities provide the service free of charge but do not provide orbital …

Recall Distortion In Neural Network Pruning And The Undecayed Pruning Algorithm, Aidan Good, Jiaqi Lin, Hannah Sieg, Mikey Ferguson, Xin Yu, Shandian Zhe, Jerzy Wieczorek, Thiago Serra
Faculty Conference Papers and Presentations
Pruning techniques have been successfully used in neural networks to trade accuracy for sparsity. However, the impact of network pruning is not uniform: prior work has shown that the recall for underrepresented classes in a dataset may be more negatively affected. In this work, we study such relative distortions in recall by hypothesizing an intensification effect that is inherent to the model. Namely, that pruning makes recall relatively worse for a class with recall below accuracy and, conversely, that it makes recall relatively better for a class with recall above accuracy. In addition, we propose a new pruning algorithm aimed …

On The Projections Of Commutative C*-Algebras, Alaa Ahmad Hamdan
On The Projections Of Commutative C*-Algebras, Alaa Ahmad Hamdan
Theses
Gelfand and Naimark proved that the Banach algebra of continuous complex-valued functions on a compact space Ω is the only example of commutative unital C*-algebras. We study the C*-algebra C(Ω) and its main elements, such as projections. Also, we discuss the mapping between projections, which preserves orthogonality (orthoisomorphism). A bijective θ between projections induces a bijective Θ between the Boolean algebra of clopen subsets of X. Then, we give main properties of such Θ. For a compact subset X of ℝ, we classify the projections of C(X) by introducing the similar relation on P(C(X)). We introduce an …

Numerical Methods For Locating Zeros Of Polynomial Systems Using Resultant, Ayade Salah Abdelmalk
Theses
In this thesis, we modify two methods for locating zeros of polynomial systems which are one dimensional path following and Lanczos method. Both approaches are based on calculating the resultant matrix corresponding to each variable in the system. These methods are stable and preserving the spareness of these matrices. These methods are developed to avoid using the zeros of the multiresultant of each variable which are condition problems. Theoretical and numerical results will be given to show the efficiency of these methods. Finally, algorithms for the Mathematica codes are given.
