Alkaline Water Electrolysis For Efficient Hydrogen Production, Wen-Fu Xie, Ming-Fei Shao
Journal of Electrochemistry
Hydrogen production from water electrolysis is a sustainable and environmentally benign strategy in comparison with fossil fuel-based hydrogen. However, this promising technique suffers from the high energy consumption and unsatisfactory cost due to the sluggish kinetics of both half reaction and inferior stability of electrocatalysts. To address this challenge, herein, we present a timely and comprehensive review on advances in alkaline water electrolysis that is already commercialized for large scale hydrogen production. The design principles and strategies with aiming to promote the performance of hydrogen generation are discussed from the view of electrocatalyst, electrode, reaction and system. The challenges and …

Alkaline Seawater Electrolysis At Industrial Level:Recent Progress And Perspective, Tao Zhang, Yi-Pu Liu, Qi-Tong Ye, Hong-Jin Fan
Journal of Electrochemistry
Industrial hydrogen generation through water splitting, powered by renewable energy such as solar, wind and marine, paves a potential way for energy and environment sustainability. However, state-of-the-art electrolysis using high purity water as hydrogen source at an industrial level would bring about crisis of freshwater resource. Seawater splitting provides a practical path to solve potable water shortage, but still faces great challenges for large-scale industrial operation. Here we summarize recent developments in seawater splitting, covering general mechanisms, design criteria for electrodes, and industrial electrolyzer for direct seawater splitting. Multi-objective optimization methods to address the key challenges of active sites, reaction …

Novel Thioglycosides As Versatile Glycosyl Donors For Oligosaccharide Synthesis, Ganesh Shrestha
Dissertations
This thesis is dedicated to the development of new methodologies for efficient synthesis of carbohydrate building blocks and their application to chemical glycosylation. S-Indolyl (SIn) anomeric moiety was investigated as a new leaving group. Understanding of the reaction pathways for the SIn moiety activation was achieved via the extended mechanistic study. The activation profile of indolylthio glycosides required large excess of activators. This drawback was partially addressed by the development of N-alkylated SInR derivatives. The activation process was studied by NMR and the increased understanding of the mechanism led to a discovery of different activation pathways taking place with …

The Industrial Internet of Things (IIoTs) is an emerging area that forms the collaborative environment for devices to share resources. In IIoT, many sensors, actuators, and other devices are used to improve industrial efficiency. As most of the devices are mobile; therefore, the impact of mobility can be seen in terms of low-device utilization. Thus, most of the time, the available resources are underutilized. Therefore, the inception of the fog computing model in IIoT has reduced the communication delay in executing complex tasks. However, it is not feasible to cover the entire region through fog nodes; therefore, fog node selection …
Exploring The Vulnerability Of A Neural Tangent Generalization Attack (Ntga) - Generated Unlearnable Cifar-10 Dataset, Gitte Ost
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
Nowadays, a massive amount of data is generated and stored on servers and cloudsfrom various applications daily. Preventing these data from unauthorized use often becomes necessary and critical in various real-world applications. Many researchers have studied this crucial problem and developed different methods for this purpose. Among them, Neural Tangent Generalization Attack (NTGA) is one of the most efficient methods to make a dataset unlearnable, which means that the dataset is not learnable by machine learning/deep learning methods. That is, the NTGA-generated dataset is protected against unauthorized use. In this thesis, we explore the vulnerability of an NTGA-generated unlearnable CIFAR-10 …

Catalytic Effect Of Disordered Ru-O Configurations For Electrochemical Hydrogen Evolution, Xue Sun, Ya-Jie Song, Ren-Long Li, Jia-Jun Wang
Journal of Electrochemistry
Phase engineering is considered as an effective method for modulating the electronic structure and catalytic activity of catalysts. The disordered conformation of amorphous materials allows flexible reforming of the surface electronic structure, showing their attractiveness as catalysts for hydrogen evolution reaction (HER). Herein, we designed and developed an amorphous ruthenium dioxide (a-RuO2) catalyst with a disordered Ru-O configuration. The conformational relationship between Ru-O ordering and HER performance is established by combining advanced electron microscopic techniques with detailed electrochemical tests. Specifically, the disordered Ru-O coordination significantly enhanced the HER catalytic activity in both acidic and alkaline media, ultimately leading …

Electrochemical Syntheses Of Nanomaterials And Small Molecules For Electrolytic Hydrogen Production, Jia-Qi Wei, Xiao-Dong Chen, Shu-Zhou Li
Journal of Electrochemistry
Hydrogen is a clean, efficient, renewable energy resource and the most promising alternative to fossil fuels for future carbon-neutral energy supply. Therefore, sustainable hydrogen production is highly attractive and urgently demanded, especially via water electrolysis that has clean, abundant precursors and zero emission. However, current water electrolysis is hindered by the sluggish kinetics and low cost/energy efficiency of both hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) and oxygen evolution reaction (OER). In this regard, electrochemical synthesis offers prospects to raise the efficiency and benefit of water electrolysis by fabricating advanced electrocatalysts and providing more efficient/value-adding co-electrolysis alternatives. It is an eco-friendly and facile …

A Self-Supported Ru-Cu3P Catalyst Toward Alkaline Hydrogen Evolution, Zi-Xuan Wan, Chao-Hui Wang, Xiong-Wu Kang
Journal of Electrochemistry
Transition metal phosphide (TMP) is a kind of effective catalysts toward hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) in alkaline electrolytes. However, the performance of TMP catalysts is strongly limited by water splitting. In this work, we developed a method to prepare a copper foam (CF) supported Ru-doped Cu3P catalyst (Ru-Cu3P/CF) by a consecutive growth of Cu(OH)2 nanoarrays, soaking in RuCl3 solution and phosphorization. A large surface area was obtained by the self-supported catalysts with the appropriative Ru doping. As an excellent HER catalyst, it exhibited a low overpotential of 95.6 mV at a current density of …

Despite entering an endemic phase, SARS-CoV-2 remains a significant burden to public health across the global community. Wastewater sampling has consistently proven utility to understanding SARS-CoV-2 prevalence trends and genetic variation as it represents a less biased assessment of the corresponding communities. Here, we report that ongoing monitoring of SARS-CoV-2 genetic variation in samples obtained from the wastewatersheds of the city of Louisville in Jefferson county Kentucky has revealed the periodic reemergence of the Delta strain in the presence of the presumed dominant Omicron strain. Unlike previous SARS-CoV-2 waves/emergence events, the Delta reemergence events were geographically restricted in the community …

Identification Of Lung Nodule Using Hierarchical Graph-Based Clustering And Multi-Level Thresholding, Yash Trivedi
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Lung cancer is the second most commonly diagnosed cancer and the leading cause of cancer deaths worldwide. Compared to standard chest radiography, clinical trials have demonstrated that low-dose CT significantly reduces mortality from lung cancer by 20%. However, segmenting pulmonary nodules remains challenging due to intrinsic noise, low contrast, variable sizes and different shapes of the nodules. Radiologists manually drawing the nodule boundary is a common approach for delineating nodules which is time-consuming, expensive and prone to intra (the difference in repeated measurements by the same observer) and inter (the difference in the measurements between observers) observer variability. Also, most …

Comparative Analysis And Integration Of Knowledge- And Data-Driven Multicriteria Models: A Case Study Of Landslide Susceptibility Assessment In Northern Iran, Seyed Vali Vakhshoori
Electronic Thesis and Dissertation Repository
A landslide susceptibility index (LSI) can be used to identify the susceptible areas to landslides and prevent loss of lives and infrastructure. LSIs are generated in knowledge- or data-driven landslide susceptibility assessment (LSA) models. Literature review shows that neither of these models is the best for LSA, and both should be integrated. Accordingly, some studies are being done in this regard, but with some drawbacks. This study's objective is to integrate and compare knowledge- or data-driven models within a standard LSA framework. For constructing the framework, the reference point (RP) method from Spatial Multicriteria Analyses (SMCA) set was employed. This …
Path-Stick Solitaire On Graphs, Jan-Hendrik De Wiljes, Martin Kreh
Path-Stick Solitaire On Graphs, Jan-Hendrik De Wiljes, Martin Kreh
Theory and Applications of Graphs
In 2011, Beeler and Hoilman generalised the game of peg solitaire to arbitrary connected graphs. Since then, peg solitaire and related games have been considered on many graph classes. In this paper, we introduce a variant of the game peg solitaire, called path-stick solitaire, which is played with sticks in edges instead of pegs in vertices. We prove several analogues to peg solitaire results for that game, mainly regarding different graph classes. Furthermore, we characterise, with very few exceptions, path-stick-solvable joins of graphs and provide some possible future research questions.

Uncertainty Analysis Of Operational Conditions In Selective Artificial Ground Freezing Applications, Ahmad Zueter, Saad Akhtar, Agus Sasmito
Journal of Sustainable Mining
Artificial ground freezing (AGF) systems are susceptible to uncertain parameters highly affecting their performance. Particularly, selective artificial ground freezing (S-AGF) systems involve several uncertain operational conditions. In this study, uncertainty analysis is conducted to investigate four operational parameters: 1) coolant inlet temperature, 2) coolant flow rate, 3) pipes emissivity, and 4) pipes eccentricity. A reduced-order model developed and validated in our previous work for field-scale applications is exploited to simulate a total of 5,000 cases. The uncertain operational parameters are set according to Monte Carlo analysis based on field observations of a field-scale freeze-pipe in the mining industry extending to …

Sialidases, or neuraminidases, are enzymes that catalyze the hydrolysis of sialic acid (Sia)-containing molecules, mostly removal of the terminal Sia (desialylation). By desialylation, sialidase can modulate the functionality of the target compound and is thus often involved in biological pathways. Inhibition of sialidases with inhibitors is an important approach for under-standing sialidase function and the underlying mechanisms and could serve as a therapeutic approach as well. Transition-state analogues, such as anti-influenza drugs oseltamivir and zanamivir, are major sialidase inhibitors. In addition, difluoro-sialic acids were developed as mechanism-based sialidase inhibitors. Further, fluorinated quinone methide-based suicide substrates were reported. Sialidase product analogue …

An Evaluation Framework For Digital Image Forensics Tools, Zainab Khalid, Sana Qadir
Journal of Digital Forensics, Security and Law
The boom of digital cameras, photography, and social media has drastically changed how humans live their day-to-day, but this normalization is accompanied by malicious agents finding new ways to forge and tamper with images for unlawful monetary (or other) gains. Disinformation in the photographic media realm is an urgent threat. The availability of a myriad of image editing tools renders it almost impossible to differentiate between photo-realistic and original images. The tools available for image forensics require a standard framework against which they can be evaluated. Such a standard framework can aid in evaluating the suitability of an image forensics …

Fast radio bursts (FRBs) are short and extremely energetic bursts of radiation detected from galaxies across the universe that occur thousands of times a day. Despite advances in instrumentation, it is difficult to explain the enormous implied energy reservoirs of FRBs, their emission mechanism and the existence of repeating and periodic sources. This thesis explores the spectro-temporal properties of repeating FRBs and details the discovery of several new relationships between them, providing valuable information on the nature of FRBs. By measuring the spectro-temporal properties of a sample of bursts from the repeating source FRB20121102A I show that the magnitude of …
