The diffusion of molecular water (H2Om) from the environment into volcanic glass can hydrate the glass up to several wt% at low temperature over long timescales. During this process, the water imprints its hydrogen isotope composition (δDH2O) to the glass (δDgl) offset by a glass-H2O fractionation factor (ΔDgl-H2O = δDgl – δDH2O) which is approximately -33‰ at Earth surface temperatures. Glasses hydrate much more rapidly at higher, sub-magmatic temperatures as they interact with H2O during eruption, transport, and emplacement. To aid in the interpretation …

Bayesian Analysis For The Lomax Model Using Noninformative Priors, Daojiang He, Dongchu Sun, Qing Zhu

The Lomax distribution is an important member in the distribution family. In this paper, we systematically develop an objective Bayesian analysis of data from a Lomax distribution. Noninformative priors, including probability matching priors, the maximal data information (MDI) prior, Jeffreys prior and reference priors, are derived. The propriety of the posterior under each prior is subsequently validated. It is revealed that the MDI prior and one of the reference priors yield improper posteriors, and the other reference prior is a second-order probability matching prior. Recent years have witnessed the proliferation of offensive content online such as fake news, propaganda, misinformation, and disinformation. While initially this was mostly about textual content, over time images and videos gained popularity, as they are much easier to consume, attract more attention, and spread further than text. As a result, researchers started leveraging different modalities and combinations thereof to tackle online multimodal offensive content. Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy-attenuated total reflectance (FTIR–ATR) was used to analyze pure and adulterated honey samples. The FTIR spectra was analyzed using principal component analysis (PCA) and partial least squares (PLS) regression analysis to determine if these methods could differentiate between pure, commercial, and sucrose-adulterated honey samples. PCA showed a clear distinction between pure and adulterated honey samples. Commercial honey samples showed clustering around the unadulterated samples. PLS regression analysis correctly identified 81.8% of the standards and samples used in the PCA analysis. The Physical Properties Of Low-Redshift Felobal Quasars. I. Spectral-Synthesis Analysis Of The Broad Absorption-Line (Bal) Outflows Using Simbal, Hyunseop Choi, Karen M. Leighly, Donald M. Terndrup, Collin Dabbieri, Sarah C. Gallagher, Gordon T. Richards

We present the first systematic study of 50 low-redshift (0.66 < z < 1.63) iron low-ionization broad absorption-line quasars (FeLoBALQs) using SimBAL, which represents a more than five-fold increase in the number of FeLoBALQs with detailed absorption line spectral analyses. We found the outflows have a wide range of ionization parameters, − 4 ≲ log U ≲ 1.2 and densities, 2.8 ≲ log n ≲ 8 [ cm − 3 ] . The objects in our sample showed FeLoBAL gas located at a wide range of distances 0 ≲ log R ≲ 4.4 [pc], although we do not find any evidence for disk winds (with R ≪ 0.01 pc) in our sample. The outflow strength primarily depends on the outflow velocity with faster outflows found in quasars that are luminous or that have flat or redder spectral energy distributions. We found that ∼18% of the FeLoBALQs in the sample have the significantly powerful outflows needed for quasar feedback. Eight objects showed overlapping troughs in the spectra, and we identified eleven loitering outflow objects, a new class of FeLoBALQs that are characterized by low outflow velocities and high column density winds located log R ≲ 1 [pc] from the central engine. The FeLoBALs in loitering outflows objects do not show properties expected for radiatively driven winds, and these objects may represent a distinct population among FeLoBALQs. We discuss how the potential acceleration mechanisms and the origins of the FeLoBAL winds may differ for outflows at different locations in quasars.

Explosive volcanic eruptions can inject massive amounts of volatiles, including SO2 and H2S, into the stratosphere, inducing drastic tropospheric cooling via sulfate aerosols. Greenland and Antarctic ice cores record evidence of these substantial releases of SO2 and H2S, including the massive release during the ultraplinian 1257 CE Samalas eruption. The 1257 CE Samalas eruption is estimated to have released ~158 Tg of SO2, making it the largest volcanogenic release of SO2 within the last 2000 years. Vidal et al. This paper provides a generalization of the famous fixed point theorem of Banach. A fixed point theory is a gorgeous blend of mathematical analysis that explains the conditions under which maps provide excellent solutions. Most of our decisions are based on the notion of similarity: we use a decision that helped in similar situations. From this viewpoint, it is important to have, for each pair of situations or objects, a numerical value describing similarity between them. This is called a similarity measure. In some cases, the only information that we can use to estimate the similarity value is some natural distance measure d(a,b). In many such situations, empirical data shows that the similarity measure 1/(1+d) is very effective. In this paper, we provide two explanations for this effectiveness.

Extractive reading comprehension is to extract consecutive subsequences from a given article to answer the given question. Previous work often adopted Byte Pair Encoding (BPE) that could cause semantically correlated words to be separated. Also, previous features extraction strategy cannot effectively capture the global semantic information. In this paper, an extractive summarization model is proposed with enhanced spatial-temporal information and span mask encoding (ESSM) to promote global semantic information. ESSM utilizes Embedding Layer to reduce semantic segmentation of correlated words, and adopts TemporalConvNet Layer to relief the loss of feature information. The effects of vertical ground accelerations during subduction zone earthquakes currently are not sufficiently understood. There are numerous case studies and evidence that effects of vertical ground accelerations can significantly impact the performance of bridges during a seismic event, but most previous research has been focused on shallow crustal earthquakes. Current bridge design codes provide little guidance for accounting for vertical ground accelerations in seismic design, in part because additional information is needed about the characteristics of vertical ground motions during Cascadia Subduction Zone (CSZ) earthquakes in the Pacific Northwest.
