Explanation Guided Contrastive Learning For Sequential Recommendation, Lei Wang, Ee-Peng Lim, Zhiwei Liu, Tianxiang Zhao Oct 2022

Explanation Guided Contrastive Learning For Sequential Recommendation, Lei Wang, Ee-Peng Lim, Zhiwei Liu, Tianxiang Zhao

Research Collection Lee Kong Chian School Of Business

Recently, contrastive learning has been applied to the sequential recommendation task to address data sparsity caused by users with few item interactions and items with few user adoptions. Nevertheless, the existing contrastive learning-based methods fail to ensure that the positive (or negative) sequence obtained by some random augmentation (or sequence sampling) on a given anchor user sequence remains to be semantically similar (or different). When the positive and negative sequences turn out to be false positive and false negative respectively, it may lead to degraded recommendation performance. In this work, we address the above problem by proposing Explanation Guided Augmentations …

Artificial Intelligence, Consumers, And The Experience Economy, Hannah H. Chang, Anirban Mukherjee Oct 2022

Artificial Intelligence, Consumers, And The Experience Economy, Hannah H. Chang, Anirban Mukherjee

Research Collection Lee Kong Chian School Of Business

The term Artificial Intelligence (AI) was first used by McCarthy, Minsky, Rochester, and Shannon in a proposal for a summer research project in 1955 (Solomonoff, 1985). It is widely and commonly defined to be “the science and engineering of making intelligent machines” (McCarthy, 2006). Recent technological advances and methodological developments have made AI pervasive in new marketing offerings, ranging from self-driving cars, intelligent voice assistants such as Amazon’s Alexa, to burger-making robots at restaurants and rack-moving robots inside warehouses such as Amazon’s family of robots (Kiva, Pegasus, Xanthus) and delivery drones. There is optimism, and perhaps even over-optimism, of the …

Using Machine Learning To Extract Insights From Consumer Data, Hannah H. Chang, Anirban Mukherjee Oct 2022

Using Machine Learning To Extract Insights From Consumer Data, Hannah H. Chang, Anirban Mukherjee

Research Collection Lee Kong Chian School Of Business

Advances in digital technology have led to the digitization of everyday activities of billions of people around the world, generating vast amounts of data on human behavior. From what people buy, to what information they search for, to how they navigate the social, digital, and physical world, human behavior can now be measured at a scale and level of precision that human history has not witnessed before. These developments have created unprecedented opportunities for those interested in understanding observable human behavior–social scientists, businesses, and policymakers—to (re)examine theoretical and substantive questions regarding people’s behavior. Moreover, technology has led to the emergence …

Dualformer: Local-Global Stratified Transformer For Efficient Video Recognition, Yuxuan Liang, Pan Zhou, Roger Zimmermann, Shuicheng Yan Oct 2022

Dualformer: Local-Global Stratified Transformer For Efficient Video Recognition, Yuxuan Liang, Pan Zhou, Roger Zimmermann, Shuicheng Yan

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

While transformers have shown great potential on video recognition with their strong capability of capturing long-range dependencies, they often suffer high computational costs induced by the self-attention to the huge number of 3D tokens. In this paper, we present a new transformer architecture termed DualFormer, which can efficiently perform space-time attention for video recognition. Concretely, DualFormer stratifies the full space-time attention into dual cascaded levels, i.e., to first learn fine-grained local interactions among nearby 3D tokens, and then to capture coarse-grained global dependencies between the query token and global pyramid contexts. Different from existing methods that apply space-time factorization or …

Self-Promoted Supervision For Few-Shot Transformer, Bowen Dong, Pan Zhou, Shuicheng Yan, Wangmeng Zuo Oct 2022

Self-Promoted Supervision For Few-Shot Transformer, Bowen Dong, Pan Zhou, Shuicheng Yan, Wangmeng Zuo

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

The few-shot learning ability of vision transformers (ViTs) is rarely investigated though heavily desired. In this work, we empirically find that with the same few-shot learning frameworks, e.g. MetaBaseline, replacing the widely used CNN feature extractor with a ViT model often severely impairs few-shot classification performance. Moreover, our empirical study shows that in the absence of inductive bias, ViTs often learn the low-qualified token dependencies under few-shot learning regime where only a few labeled training data are available, which largely contributes to the above performance degradation. To alleviate this issue, for the first time, we propose a simple yet effective …

Unsupervised Video Hashing With Multi-Granularity Contextualization And Multi-Structure Preservation, Yanbin Hao, Jingru Duan, Hao Zhang, Bin Zhu, Pengyuan Zhou, Xiangnan He Oct 2022

Unsupervised Video Hashing With Multi-Granularity Contextualization And Multi-Structure Preservation, Yanbin Hao, Jingru Duan, Hao Zhang, Bin Zhu, Pengyuan Zhou, Xiangnan He

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Unsupervised video hashing typically aims to learn a compact binary vector to represent complex video content without using manual annotations. Existing unsupervised hashing methods generally suffer from incomplete exploration of various perspective dependencies (e.g., long-range and short-range) and data structures that exist in visual contents, resulting in less discriminative hash codes. In this paper, we propose aMulti-granularity Contextualized and Multi-Structure preserved Hashing (MCMSH) method, exploring multiple axial contexts for discriminative video representation generation and various structural information for unsupervised learning simultaneously. Specifically, we delicately design three self-gating modules to separately model three granularities of dependencies (i.e., long/middle/short-range dependencies) and densely …

Nanotechnology As Building Materials And Its Impact On The Quality Of Residential Buildings, Shekha Alrasheed, Hatem El Shafie

Mansoura Engineering Journal

A modern technology called "nanotechnology" has emerged that seeks to environmental design through the use of new technologies and advanced scientific methods in the construction of contemporary architectural edifices. The research problem is the underutilization of nanotechnology in building materials for residential buildings due to the lack of knowledge of the benefits and cost of this technology. The importance of the study lies in the use of building materials based on nanotechnology with new properties and high performance that address the problems in current building materials so as to apply sustainability standards and provide efficiency for residential buildings to suit …

Diffraction-Free Beam Propagation At The Exceptional Point Of Non-Hermitian Glauber Fock Lattices, Cem Yuce, Hamidreza Ramezani Oct 2022

Diffraction-Free Beam Propagation At The Exceptional Point Of Non-Hermitian Glauber Fock Lattices, Cem Yuce, Hamidreza Ramezani

Physics and Astronomy Faculty Publications and Presentations

We construct localized beams in a non-Hermitian Glauber Fock (NGF) lattice of coupled waveguides and show that they can propagate for a long distance without almost no diffraction. We specifically obtain the diffraction-free beams in a finite NGF lattice at the exceptional point (EP) by using the exact eigenstates of the semi-infinite unidirectional NGF lattice. We provide a numerical approach to finding other lattices that are capable of supporting non-diffracting beams at EPs.

Constructing Planetary Citizens Through Ecopedagogy In U.S. Social Studies Standards, Madeline Anne Rainey Oct 2022

Constructing Planetary Citizens Through Ecopedagogy In U.S. Social Studies Standards, Madeline Anne Rainey

Master's Theses

The world is in the age of the Anthropocene, where humans are impacting the environment to disastrous effects. The capitalist economy, promoting neoliberal policies of mass consumption, has exacerbated the world's environmental deterioration and social inequity. The rights and responsibilities people hold have been rapidly changing with the fourth industrial revolution. Globalization and Information and Communications Technology (ICT) have further expanded notions of citizenship. While there have been numerous attempts to bring the environment into schools, it has not emphasized what this crisis deserves. Ecopedagogy, as a critical theory, explicitly examines the interplay between environmental and social problems and challenges …

Microplastic Fiber Abundance For South Carolina White Shrimp, Litopenaeus Setiferus, Across Two Habitats, Adriene Funck

Honors Theses

Coastal South Carolina is a prime destination for shrimping. The commercial White Shrimp, Litopenaeus setiferus, is one of the main species found in South Carolina estuaries and coastline. There are commercial and recreation fishing practices in South Carolina for L. setiferus, making it a species of interest for the public. Microplastics are additionally a large interest in the public and scientific community for research and solutions. The threats of plastic pollution are not fully understood in the marine environment, but there has been a boom of research discussing various effects and distributions of microplastics in the ocean recently. Shrimp species …

Combining Security And Reliability Of Critical Infrastructures: The Concept Of Securability, Leandros Maglaras, Helge Janicke, Mohamed Amine Ferrag

Research outputs 2022 to 2026

The digital revolution has made people more dependent on ICT technology to perform everyday tasks, whether at home or at work. The systems that support critical aspects of this smart way of living are characterized as critical, and the security level of such systems is higher as compared to others. The definition of the criticality of a system is a rather difficult exercise, and for that reason, we have seen novel cybersecurity regulations to introduce the idea of digital managed services, which include security monitoring, managed network services, or the outsourcing of business processes that are are critical to the …

Stable Matchings With Restricted Preferences: Structure And Complexity, Christine T. Cheng, Will Rosenbaum Sep 2022

Stable Matchings With Restricted Preferences: Structure And Complexity, Christine T. Cheng, Will Rosenbaum

Computer Science Faculty Articles

In the stable marriage (SM) problem, there are two sets of agents–traditionally referred to as men and women–and each agent has a preference list that ranks (a subset of) agents of the opposite sex. The goal is to find a matching between men and women that is stable in the sense that no man-woman pair mutually prefer each other to their assigned partners. In a seminal work, Gale and Shapley showed that stable matchings always exist, and described an efficient algorithm for finding one.

Irving and Leather defined the rotation poset of an SM instance and showed that it determines …

A Mode-Sum Prescription For The Renormalized Stress Energy Tensor On Black Hole Spacetimes, Peter Taylor, Cormac Breen, Adrian Ottewill Sep 2022

A Mode-Sum Prescription For The Renormalized Stress Energy Tensor On Black Hole Spacetimes, Peter Taylor, Cormac Breen, Adrian Ottewill

Articles

In this paper, we describe an extremely efficient method for computing the renormalized stress-energy tensor of a quantum scalar field in spherically symmetric black hole spacetimes. The method applies to a scalar field with arbitrary field parameters. We demonstrate the utility of the method by computing the renormalized stress-energy tensor for a scalar field in the Schwarzschild black hole spacetime, applying our results to discuss the null energy condition and the semiclassical backreaction.

Seasonal Habitat Selection By American White Pelicans, Frederick L. Cunningham, Guiming Wang, D. Tommy King Sep 2022

Seasonal Habitat Selection By American White Pelicans, Frederick L. Cunningham, Guiming Wang, D. Tommy King

United States Department of Agriculture Wildlife Services: Staff Publications

Resource utilization strategies of avian migrants are a major concern for conservation and management. Understanding seasonal habitat selection by migratory birds helps us explain the ongoing continental declines of migratory bird populations. Our objective was to compare the secondorder and third-order habitat selection by the American White Pelican (Pelecanus erythrorhynchos; hereafter pelican) between the breeding and non-breeding grounds. We tested the Lack hypothesis that habitat selection by migratory birds is stronger on the breeding grounds than on the nonbreeding grounds. We used random-effect Dirichlet-multinomial models to estimate the second-order habitat selection between the seasons with the GPS locations …

Department of Chemistry and Biochemistry Faculty Scholarship and Creative Works

One of the global problems is environmental pollution by different biowaste. To solve the problem, biowaste must be recycled. Waste-free technology is also a way of saving exhaustible raw materials. Research on electrochemical energy sources is currently the most dynamically developing area of off-grid energy. Electrochemical capacitors can operate for a long time without changing performance, they have smaller dimensions, high mechanical strength, and a wide operating temperature range. These properties are effective energy-saving devices. Therefore, supercapacitors are widely used in various industries. This review discussed the methods of obtaining and the characteristics of biowaste-derived activated carbon and carbon–manganese oxide …

A Generalized Method Of Undetermined Coefficients, James S. Cook, William J. Cook Sep 2022

A Generalized Method Of Undetermined Coefficients, James S. Cook, William J. Cook

CODEE Journal

The method of undetermined coefficients is used to solve constant coefficient nonhomogeneous differential equations whose forcing function is itself the solution of a homogeneous constant coefficient differential equation. In this paper, we show that the classical methods for tackling constant coefficient equations, including the method of undetermined coefficients, generalize to much wider class linear differential equations which, for example, include Cauchy-Euler type equations. This general method includes an explicit construction of the fundamental solution sets of such equations. We also briefly consider where this method can be applied by producing the most general second and third order differential equations that …

Microstructural Origin Of The High-Energy Storage Performance In Epitaxial Lead-Free Ba(Zr 0.2 Ti 0.8 )O 3 Thick Films, Jun Ouyang, Xianke Wang, Changtao Shao, Hongbo Cheng, Hanfei Zhu, Yuhang Ren Sep 2022

Microstructural Origin Of The High-Energy Storage Performance In Epitaxial Lead-Free Ba(Zr 0.2 Ti 0.8 )O 3 Thick Films, Jun Ouyang, Xianke Wang, Changtao Shao, Hongbo Cheng, Hanfei Zhu, Yuhang Ren

Publications and Research

In our previous work, epitaxial Ba(Zr 0.2 Ti 0.8 )O 3 thick films (~1–2 μ m) showed an excellent energy storage performance with a large recyclable energy density (~58 J/cc) and a high energy efficiency (~92%), which was attributed to a nanoscale entangled heterophase polydomain structure. Here, we propose a detailed analysis of the structure–property relationship in these film materials, using an annealing process to illustrate the effect of nanodomain entanglement on the energy storage performance. It is revealed that an annealing-induced stress relaxation led to the segregation of the nanodomains (via detailed XRD analyses), and a degraded energy storage …

Hydrogen is a renewable and environmentally friendly energy source that can replace fossil fuels by utilizing solar energy through water splitting. The hydrogen production was conducted in this research by using a tandem system of dye-sensitized solar cell–photoelectrochemical cell (DSSC–PEC) and a TiO2 nanotube coated with BiFeO3 (BiFeO3/TNT) as a photoanode in the PEC. The deposition of BiFeO3 on TNT was prepared using the following three methods: successive ionic layer adsorption and reaction (SILAR), ultrasonication-assisted SILAR, and ultrasonic– immersion method by varying the number of deposition cycles in each method. In this study, the optimum …

Estimation Of The Bubble Point Pressure Of Multicomponent Reservoir Hydrocarbon Fluids, Benjamin Sunday Usen, Chidi Obi Sep 2022

Estimation Of The Bubble Point Pressure Of Multicomponent Reservoir Hydrocarbon Fluids, Benjamin Sunday Usen, Chidi Obi

Makara Journal of Science

This study developed a novel C-sharp (C#) programming language for the estimation of bubble point pressure (BPP) of various hydrocarbon mixtures at equilibrium state. The methodology was based on vapor–liquid equilibrium calculation using Peng Robinson equation of state implementation, thermodynamic equilibrium calculation and Newton-Raphson’s method for the successive substitution of the unknown variables. The equal fugacity constraint can be satisfied by obtaining the equilibrium which serves as a criterion for two or more phases to exist at equilibrium. The problem was resolved by searching for a pressure that will satisfy the two constraints. Complex calculation was performed by successively substituting …

Anomaly Detection In Cybersecurity Datasets Via Cooperative Co-Evolution-Based Feature Selection, Bazlur A. N. M. Rashid, Mohiuddin Ahmed, Leslie F. Sikos, Paul Haskell-Dowland

Research outputs 2022 to 2026

Anomaly detection from Big Cybersecurity Datasets is very important; however, this is a very challenging and computationally expensive task. Feature selection (FS) is an approach to remove irrelevant and redundant features and select a subset of features, which can improve the machine learning algorithms’ performance. In fact, FS is an effective preprocessing step of anomaly detection techniques. This article’s main objective is to improve and quantify the accuracy and scalability of both supervised and unsupervised anomaly detection techniques. In this effort, a novel anomaly detection approach using FS, called Anomaly Detection Using Feature Selection (ADUFS), has been introduced. Experimental analysis …

The ability of tissues to sustain and withstand mechanical stress is critical to tissue development and healthy tissue maintenance. The mechanical properties of tissues are typically considered to be dominated by the fibrous extracellular matrix (ECM) component of tissues. Fiber network mechanics can capture certain mechanical features of tissues, such as shear strain stiffening, but is insufficient in describing the compressive response of certain tissues and blood clots that are rich in extracellular matrix. To understand the mechanical response of tissues, we employ a contemporary mechanical model, a fibrous network of fibrin embedded with inert bead inclusions that preserve the …

Small Molecule Modulation Of Microbiota: A Systems Pharmacology Perspective, Qiao Liu, Bohyun Lee, Lei Xie Sep 2022

Small Molecule Modulation Of Microbiota: A Systems Pharmacology Perspective, Qiao Liu, Bohyun Lee, Lei Xie

Publications and Research

Background

Microbes are associated with many human diseases and influence drug efficacy. Small-molecule drugs may revolutionize biomedicine by fine-tuning the microbiota on the basis of individual patient microbiome signatures. However, emerging endeavors in small-molecule microbiome drug discovery continue to follow a conventional “one-drug-one-target-one-disease” process. A systematic pharmacology approach that would suppress multiple interacting pathogenic species in the microbiome, could offer an attractive alternative solution.

Results

We construct a disease-centric signed microbe–microbe interaction network using curated microbe metabolite information and their effects on host. We develop a Signed Random Walk with Restart algorithm for the accurate prediction of effect of microbes …
