Cataloguing and classifying trees in the urban environment is a crucial step in urban and environmental planning. However, manual collection and maintenance of this data is expensive and time-consuming. Algorithmic approaches that rely on remote sensing data have been developed for tree detection in forests, though they generally struggle in the more varied urban environment. This work proposes a novel method for the detection of trees in the urban environment that applies deep learning to remote sensing data. The topic of my dissertation is to investigate the behavior of modules and tensor products over a truncated polynomial ring with prime characteristic. This investigation utilizes principal subalgebras of the truncated polynomial ring as the main tool for studying these objects. Then, we investigate if these modules and their tensor products have a similar behavior when viewed over more general truncated polynomial rings. In particular, we aim to investigate the behavior of these objects when we replace principal subalgebras over a field with prime characteristic by hypersurfaces over a field with no characteristic restriction.

Rockfalls and unstable slopes pose a serious threat to people and property along roads/highways in the southwestern mountainous regions of Saudi Arabia. In this study, the application of terrestrial light detection and ranging (LiDAR) technology was applied aiming to propose a strategy to analyze and accurately depict the detection of rockfall changes, calculation of rockfall volume, and evaluate rockfall hazards along the Habs Road, Jazan Region, Saudi Arabia. Quizalofop-resistant rice technology allows for over-the-top applications of quizalofop, an acetyl-coenzyme A carboxylase-inhibiting herbicide. However, quizalofop caused significant injury to quizalofop-resistant rice in some Arkansas fields during the first year of commercialization. Experiments evaluated the effect of early-season soil moisture and nitrogen availability; pre-exposure to low rates of glyphosate and imazethapyr; planting date; and environmental conditions including, soil moisture content, air temperature, and light intensity on quizalofop-resistant rice tolerance to quizalofop applications. In 2014 Brendle and Margalit proved the level $4$ congruence subgroup of the braid group, $B_{n}[4]$, is the subgroup of the pure braid group generated by squares of all elements, $PB_{n}^{2}$. We define the mod $4$ braid group, $\Z_{n}$, to be the quotient of the braid group by the level 4 congruence subgroup, $B_{n}/B_{n}[4]$. In this dissertation we construct a group presentation for $\Z_{n}$ and determine a normal generating set for $B_{n}[4]$ as a subgroup of the braid group. Further work by Kordek and Margalit in 2019 proved $\Z_{n}$ is an extension of the symmetric group, $S_{n}$, by $\mathbb{Z}_{2}^{\binom{n}{2}}$. A …

The aim of this dissertation is the investigation of thermoelectric and lattice dynamics properties of two-dimensional (2D) MX (M = Sn, Pb; X = S, Se, Te) and ZrS2 compounds based on the first-principles density functional theory. The dimensionality reduction (e.g., using 2D structure) of bulk materials is found to have enhanced thermoelectric efficiency. This enhancement is attributed to the increase of the Seebeck coefficient as a result of higher electronic density of states near the Fermi level in low-dimensional materials. The structural, dynamical, electronic, and thermoelectric properties of rock-salt and wurtzite Cd1-xZnxO alloys, VTiRhZ (Al, Ga, In, Si, Ge, Sn) and ZrTiRhZ (Ge, Sn) quaternary Heusler alloys (QHAs) were investigated using density functional theory (DFT) and semi-classical Boltzmann transport theory. From these calculations, the alloys were identified as potential materials for future thermoelectric applications. Furthermore, the magnetic and spin-polarization properties of these QHAs were investigated. The total magnetic moments were found to be integer values for all QHAs. In addition, all studied QHAs except VTiRhAl possess a half-metallic behavior with a 100% spin-polarization. The half-metallic ferromagnetic behavior makes them promising …

This work focuses on the investigation of single and double quantum dots in two-dimensional transition metal dichalcogenide tungsten diselenide (WSe_2) as a means to evaluate the valley degree of freedom as a potential qubit and ambipolar tungsten diselenide monolayers as single photon sources. Gate-defined quantum dots in monolayer and bilayer WSe_2 were fabricated and characterized. Single dot devices are gated from above and below the WSe_2 to accumulate a hole gas. Coastal Bangladesh is subject to extreme climate change forces upon poor, rural populations. The aim of this thesis is to determine the strength of environmental drivers of migration and discern whether planned or catastrophic migration predominates in the polder areas of Bangladesh. I use regression analysis on a 1,025 household, 2016 IRRI/IWMI analysis of Polder 28/1, 28/2, and 30 within Satkhira district to determine factor correlations with migration. Progressive salinization is the strongest environmental driver, while flooding decreases migration through trapping household capital investment. Religion has the greatest correlation with migration. In the first chapter of this dissertation we give a brief introduction to Markov chain Monte Carlo methods (MCMC) and their application in Bayesian inference. In particular, we discuss the Metropolis-Hastings and conjugate Gibbs algorithms and explore the computational underpinnings of these methods. The second chapter discusses how to incorporate spatial autocorrelation in linear a regression model with an emphasis on the computational framework for estimating the spatial correlation patterns.

The objective of this study was to quantify the winter severity in a way that was reproduceable and easy to understand. The Accumulated Winter Severity Seasonal Index (AWSSI) was chosen for this reason and was used to quantify winter severity by season across the state of Arkansas. The variables that go into the AWSSI calculation are maximum daily temperature, minimum daily temperature, daily snowfall, and daily snow depth. This dissertation evaluated the gap between intent and action regarding earthquake hazards in Muslim countries with a focus on Afghanistan and Pakistan. Cultural biases provided predictions of risk perceptions and risk-taking preferences that were often more powerful than measures of knowledge and experience. We present the Multi-Orbit Routing and Scheduling of Refuellable On-Orbit Servicing Space Robots problem which considers on-orbit servicing across multiple orbits with moving tasks and moving refuelling depots. We formulate a mixed integer linear program model to optimize the routing and scheduling of robot servicers to accomplish on-orbit servicing tasks. Within the last four decades, phylogenetic comparative methods have become the defacto method of analysis for comparative biologists. The availability of high-quality comparative datasets has been matched by an explosion of possible phylogenetic models. In large part, the efforts to increase the realism of phylogenetic comparative methods has been successful as evidenced by their widespread use.
