The piezoelectric response has been a measure of interest in density functional theory (DFT) for micro-electromechanical systems (MEMS) since the inception of MEMS technology. Piezoelectric-based MEMS devices find wide applications in automobiles, mobile phones, healthcare devices, and silicon chips for computers, to name a few. Piezoelectric properties of doped aluminum nitride (AlN) have been under investigation in materials science for piezoelectric thin films because of its wide range of device applicability. In this research using rigorous DFT calculations, high throughput ab-initio simulations for 23 AlN alloys are generated.

This research is the first to report strong enhancements of piezoelectric properties …

Ultrafast Error-Bounded Lossy Compression For Scientific Datasets, Xiaodong Yu, Sheng Di, Kai Zhao, Jiannan Tian, Dingwen Tao, Xin Liang, Franck Cappello

Computer Science Faculty Research & Creative Works

Today's scientific high-performance computing applications and advanced instruments are producing vast volumes of data across a wide range of domains, which impose a serious burden on data transfer and storage. Error-bounded lossy compression has been developed and widely used in the scientific community because it not only can significantly reduce the data volumes but also can strictly control the data distortion based on the user-specified error bound. Existing lossy compressors, however, cannot offer ultrafast compression speed, which is highly demanded by numerous applications or use cases (such as in-memory compression and online instrument data compression). In this paper, we propose …

Provenance, Composition And Transport Processes Of Pleistocene-Recent Turbidite Sediments Of The Se Nazca Plate, Odp Site 1232, Kimberly D. Beck

FIU Electronic Theses and Dissertations

A 300 meter sequence of Pleistocene turbidite deposits was recovered on the Nazca Plate at the subducting edge of the Peru-Chile Trench at ODP Site 1232. Analysis of the coarsest particles in the turbidite sequences implies sediment was supplied in some proportion by terrestrial erosion and originated in the coastal, central, and Andean volcanic/magmatic belt which parallels the Southern Chilean coast, and the predominant material type is volcanic. Petrographic and geochemical analyses show that samples from 3 - 140 mbsf contain >43% fresh, angular glass. New calcareous nannofossil biostratigraphy brackets the sediment ages of the upper 288 m of cored …

Study Of The Etaprimepi0 System In Gluex, Rupesh Dotel Jun 2022

Study Of The Etaprimepi0 System In Gluex, Rupesh Dotel

FIU Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The η′π is an important decay channel for the potentially exotic hybrid meson π1(1600) that has been detected in the COMPASS, VES and E852 experiments. These previous experiments used a charged pion beam as a probe. In contrast, the GlueX experiment is designed to search for the exotic hybrid mesons using a linearly polarized photon beam. This thesis project analyzes the η′π0 system produced in GlueX by the reaction γp → η′π0p. After optimizing the event selection to minimize background contributions, a mass independent partial wave analysis is performed in search of an exotic signature. Within the currently available statistical …

Climatology Of Rainfall Distribution And Asymmetries Of Tropical Cyclones: A Global Perspective, Oscar Guzman Rey Jun 2022

Climatology Of Rainfall Distribution And Asymmetries Of Tropical Cyclones: A Global Perspective, Oscar Guzman Rey

FIU Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Estimating the magnitude of tropical cyclone (TC) rainfall at different landfalling states is an important aspect of the TC forecast that directly affects the level of response from emergency managers in coastal areas. This research analyses the spatial distribution of the rainfall magnitude in tropical cyclones (TCs) at different stages over global oceans. The research’s central hypothesis is that TC rainfall exhibits distinct features in the long-term satellite dataset due to the evolution of the spatial distribution, radial variation, and asymmetries at the stages before, during, and after landfall. The resulting patterns are analyzed through a statistical approach that takes …

Efficient And Adaptive Decentralized Sparse Gaussian Process Regression For Environmental Sampling Using Autonomous Vehicles, Tanner A. Norton Jun 2022

Efficient And Adaptive Decentralized Sparse Gaussian Process Regression For Environmental Sampling Using Autonomous Vehicles, Tanner A. Norton

Theses and Dissertations

In this thesis, I present a decentralized sparse Gaussian process regression (DSGPR) model with event-triggered, adaptive inducing points. This DSGPR model brings the advantages of sparse Gaussian process regression to a decentralized implementation. Being decentralized and sparse provides advantages that are ideal for multi-agent systems (MASs) performing environmental modeling. In this case, MASs need to model large amounts of information while having potential intermittent communication connections. Additionally, the model needs to correctly perform uncertainty propagation between autonomous agents and ensure high accuracy on the prediction. For the model to meet these requirements, a bounded and efficient real-time sparse Gaussian process …

Solving Inverse Conductivity Problems In Doubly Connected Domains By The Homogenization Functions Of Two Parameters, Jun Lu, Lianpeng Shi, Chein-Shan Liu, C.S. Chen Jun 2022

Solving Inverse Conductivity Problems In Doubly Connected Domains By The Homogenization Functions Of Two Parameters, Jun Lu, Lianpeng Shi, Chein-Shan Liu, C.S. Chen

Faculty Publications

In the paper, we make the first attempt to derive a family of two-parameter homogenization functions in the doubly connected domain, which is then applied as the bases of trial solutions for the inverse conductivity problems. The expansion coefficients are obtained by imposing an extra boundary condition on the inner boundary, which results in a linear system for the interpolation of the solution in a weighted Sobolev space. Then, we retrieve the spatial- or temperature-dependent conductivity function by solving a linear system, which is obtained from the collocation method applied to the nonlinear elliptic equation after inserting the solution. Although …

Methods In Discrete Mathematics To Study Dna Rearrangement Processes, Lina Fajardo Gómez Jun 2022

Methods In Discrete Mathematics To Study Dna Rearrangement Processes, Lina Fajardo Gómez

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

In this work, we introduce novel tools to study DNA recombination pathways and measure their complexity. Genome rearrangement in some ciliate species can be modeled by subword pattern deletions in double-occurrence words (DOWs), words where each symbol appears exactly twice. The iterated deletions can be represented by a graph whose vertices are DOWs connected by an edge if one word can be obtained from the other through a pattern deletion. On this graph, called the “word graph”, we build a complex comprised of cells defined by Cartesian products of simplicial digraphs where we define a boundary operator and compute homology …

Biomass Residues Improve Soil Chemical And Biological Properties Reestablishing Native Species In An Exposed Subsoil In Brazilian Cerrado, Thaís Soto Boni, Engil Isadora Pujol Pereira, Adriana Avelino Santos, Ana Maria Rodrigues Cassiolato, Kátia Luciene Maltoni

School of Earth, Environmental, and Marine Sciences Faculty Publications and Presentations

Revegetation of exposed sub-soil, while a desirable strategy in the recovery processes, often fails due to extreme soil chemical properties, such as low organic matter and pH levels inhospitable to biological activities such as nutrients cycling and plant establishment. This is the case for approximately 800 ha of the Cerrado biome in Brazil, where erecting the embankment of a hydroelectric dam in the 1960’s stripped vegetation, soil, and subsoil layers thereby distorting the soil properties. This work evaluates the effectiveness of restoration management (RM) treatments, to restore the soil quality, including biological activity and chemical attributes. In a factorial scheme, …

Understanding College Students' Use Of Written Feedback In Mathematics, Erin Loraine Carroll Jun 2022

Understanding College Students' Use Of Written Feedback In Mathematics, Erin Loraine Carroll

Theses and Dissertations

Many teachers want to help their students develop a growth mindset about their ability to do mathematics. Research has shown, however, that teachers simply do not know how to promote growth mindsets in their classrooms. Existing research suggests that one way teachers can support students' development of a growth mindset is through the written feedback they provide students. This study combines the research done on students' mindsets and written feedback to examine the interaction between student mindset and written feedback by analyzing written feedback provided to students in a College Algebra class and how students used that feedback based on …

Asencion Diez, Alberto A. Iglesias, Dali Liu, Miguel A. Ballicora

Chemistry: Faculty Publications and Other Works

The allosteric regulation of ADP–glucose pyrophosphorylase is critical for the biosynthesis of glycogen in bacteria and starch in plants. The enzyme from Agrobacterium tumefaciens is activated by fructose 6-phosphate (Fru6P) and pyruvate (Pyr). The Pyr site has been recently found, but the site where Fru6P binds has remained unknown. We hypothesize that a sulfate ion previously found in the crystal structure reveals a part of the regulatory site mimicking the presence of the phosphoryl moiety of the activator Fru6P. Ser72 interacts with this sulfate ion and, if the hypothesis is correct, Ser72 would affect the interaction with Fru6P and activation …

Nebraska Cooperative Fish and Wildlife Research Unit: Staff Publications

We assessed the influence of the severe mid-20th century population decline on genetic diversity in nonaugmented Peregrine Falcon Falco peregrinus populations nesting within the Alaska Arctic and eastern Interior. Microsatellite and mitochondrial DNA (mtDNA) data were analysed for Peregrine Falcons sampled from three periods: pre-decline, decline and post-decline. The influence of the decline on genetic diversity differed between the two locales. The Alaska Arctic was characterized by shifts in mtDNA haplotype frequencies, increased inbreeding coefficient, reduction in effective population size and increase in private haplotypes, and a signature of post-decline population growth was detected; by contrast, the eastern Interior showed …

Rainbow Perfect And Near-Perfect Matchings In Complete Graphs With Edges Colored By Circular Distance, Shuhei Saitoh, Naoki Matsumoto, Wei Wu Jun 2022

Rainbow Perfect And Near-Perfect Matchings In Complete Graphs With Edges Colored By Circular Distance, Shuhei Saitoh, Naoki Matsumoto, Wei Wu

Theory and Applications of Graphs

Given an edge-colored complete graph Kn on n vertices, a perfect (respectively, near-perfect) matching M in Kn with an even (respectively, odd) number of vertices is rainbow if all edges have distinct colors. In this paper, we consider an edge coloring of Kn by circular distance, and we denote the resulting complete graph by Kn. We show that when Kn has an even number of vertices, it contains a rainbow perfect matching if and only if n=8k or n=8k+2, where k is a nonnegative integer. In the case of an odd …

Ultrametrics And Complete Multipartite Graphs, Viktoriia Viktorivna Bilet, Oleksiy Dovgoshey, Yuriy Nikitovich Kononov

Theory and Applications of Graphs

Let (X, d) be a semimetric space and let G be a graph. We say that G is the diametrical graph of (X, d) if X is the vertex set of G and the adjacency of vertices x and y is equivalent to the equality diam X = d(x, y). It is shown that a semimetric space (X, d) with diameter d* is ultrametric if the diametrical graph of (X, d ε) with d ε (x, y) = min{d(x, y), ε} is complete multipartite for every ε ∈ (0, d* …

Coal Geology & Exploration

Hydraulic fracturing is a technology to increase coal seam permeability, and its stress evolution characteristics and the judgment of fracture morphology and propagation range are particularly important. In this paper, based on directional fracturing, a fluid-structure coupling model of hydraulic fracturing is established by using the discrete element numerical method. The effects of fracturing flow, Poisson’s ratio, natural fracture density on stress evolution and fracture evolution, and their mesoscopic laws are investigated by means of the stress path and crack hot spot diagram. The results show that the stress evolution direction and the final stress path curve shape are obviously …
