On Simultaneous Similarity Of D-Tuples Of Commuting Square Matrices, Corey Connelly Jun 2022

On Simultaneous Similarity Of D-Tuples Of Commuting Square Matrices, Corey Connelly

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

It has been shown by B. Shekhtman that when any d-tuple A of pairwise commuting N × N matrices with complex entries is cyclic, then A is simultaneously similar to the d-tuple of commuting N × N matrices B if and only if B is cyclic, and the sets of polynomials in d variables which annihilate A and B are equivalent.

This thesis offers a further generalization of this result, demonstrating the necessary and sufficient conditions for the simultaneous similarity of n-cyclic d-tuples of commuting square complex-valued matrices.

Grotthuss Molecular Dynamics Simulations For Modeling Proton Hopping In Electrosprayed Water Droplets., Lars Konermann, Scott Kim Jun 2022

Grotthuss Molecular Dynamics Simulations For Modeling Proton Hopping In Electrosprayed Water Droplets., Lars Konermann, Scott Kim

Chemistry Publications

Excess protons in water exhibit unique transport properties because they can rapidly hop along H-bonded water wires. Considerable progress has been made in unraveling this Grotthuss diffusion mechanism using quantum mechanical-based computational techniques. Unfortunately, high computational cost tends to restrict those techniques to small systems and short times. Molecular dynamics (MD) simulations can be applied to much larger systems and longer time windows. However, standard MD methods do not permit the dissociation/formation of covalent bonds, such that Grotthuss diffusion cannot be captured. Here, we bridge this gap by combining atomistic MD simulations (using Gromacs and TIP4P/2005 water) with proton hopping. …

An Absence Of Elephants In The Room: Religion, Philosophy, And Negative Numbers In Albert Girard’S A New Discovery In Algebra, Ethan Wilmes Jun 2022

An Absence Of Elephants In The Room: Religion, Philosophy, And Negative Numbers In Albert Girard’S A New Discovery In Algebra, Ethan Wilmes

Lawrence University Honors Projects

In early seventeenth-century Europe, the lines separating theology, science, and humanism were thin; what the modern reader understands as three distinct spheres of knowledge considerably overlapped with one another. Scientific discoveries and innovations coming from new technologies and foreign lands were laden with implications about theology and the human condition. While bland to all but the most fringe historians of mathematics today, the discovery of negative numbers led to a passionate and occasionally fierce epistemological debate throughout Europe. Falling outside of traditional mathematical knowledge, negative numbers found themselves in a sort of existential limbo; however useful they proved themselves to …

Department of Physics and Astronomy: Faculty Publications

Resonant tunneling is a quantum-mechanical effect in which electron transport is controlled by the discrete energy levels within a quantum-well (QW) structure. A ferroelectric resonant tunneling diode (RTD) exploits the switchable electric polarization state of the QW barrier to tune the device resistance. Here, the discovery of robust room-temperature ferroelectric-modulated resonant tunneling and negative differential resistance (NDR) behaviors in all-perovskite-oxide BaTiO3/SrRuO3/BaTiO3 QW structures is reported. The resonant current amplitude and voltage are tunable by the switchable polarization of the BaTiO3 ferroelectric with the NDR ratio modulated by ≈3 orders of magnitude and an OFF/ON …

Four-Field Hamiltonian Fluid Closures Of The One-Dimensional Vlasov-Poisson Equation, C. Chandre, Bradley Allan Shadwick Jun 2022

Four-Field Hamiltonian Fluid Closures Of The One-Dimensional Vlasov-Poisson Equation, C. Chandre, Bradley Allan Shadwick

Department of Physics and Astronomy: Faculty Publications

We consider a reduced dynamics for the first four fluid moments of the one-dimensional Vlasov-Poisson equation, namely, the fluid density, fluid velocity, pressure and heat flux. This dynamics depends on an equation of state to close the system. This equation of state (closure) connects the fifth order moment—related to the kurtosis in velocity of the Vlasov distribution—with the first four moments. By solving the Jacobi identity, we derive an equation of state which ensures that the resulting reduced fluid model is Hamiltonian. We show that this Hamiltonian closure allows symmetric homogeneous equilibria of the reduced fluid model to be stable.

Towards Color-Based Two-Hand 3d Global Pose Estimation, Fanqing Lin Jun 2022

Towards Color-Based Two-Hand 3d Global Pose Estimation, Fanqing Lin

Theses and Dissertations

Pose estimation and tracking is essential for applications involving human controls. Specifically, as the primary operating tool for human activities, hand pose estimation plays a significant role in applications such as hand tracking, gesture recognition, human-computer interaction and VR/AR. As the field develops, there has been a trend to utilize deep learning to estimate the 2D/3D hand poses using color-based information without depth data. Within the depth-based as well as color-based approaches, the research community has primarily focused on single-hand scenarios in a localized/normalized coordinate system. Due to the fact that both hands are utilized in most applications, we propose …

The Short-Term Effects Of Fine Airborne Particulate Matter And Climate On Covid-19 Disease Dynamics, El Hussain Shamsa, Kezhong Zhang Jun 2022

The Short-Term Effects Of Fine Airborne Particulate Matter And Climate On Covid-19 Disease Dynamics, El Hussain Shamsa, Kezhong Zhang

Medical Student Research Symposium

Background: Despite more than 60% of the United States population being fully vaccinated, COVID-19 cases continue to spike in a temporal pattern. These patterns in COVID-19 incidence and mortality may be linked to short-term changes in environmental factors.

Methods: Nationwide, county-wise measurements for COVID-19 cases and deaths, fine-airborne particulate matter (PM2.5), and maximum temperature were obtained from March 20, 2020 to March 20, 2021. Multivariate Linear Regression was used to analyze the association between environmental factors and COVID-19 incidence and mortality rates in each season. Negative Binomial Regression was used to analyze daily fluctuations of COVID-19 cases …

Sand Microtextures As Indicators Of Depositional Environment – A Comparison Of Fluvial, Marine And Aeolian Sediments, Brian Hanson, Diane M. Burns Jun 2022

Sand Microtextures As Indicators Of Depositional Environment – A Comparison Of Fluvial, Marine And Aeolian Sediments, Brian Hanson, Diane M. Burns

The Compass: Earth Science Journal of Sigma Gamma Epsilon

The Scanning Electron Microscope (SEM) has been used to examine sediment surfaces since the late 1960’s. More recently, results of SEM analyses of grains have been used to link depositional environments and modes of transport for sediments and sandstones (Krinsely and Trusty, 1986; Mahaney and Kalm 2000; Mahaney et al., 2001). This technique has been considered to be a viable, though time consuming, option for researchers interpreting depositional environments. V-pits are a microfeature which is claimed to indicate a littoral deposition environment (Krinsley and Trusty, 1986; Middleton and Kassera, 1987), while others claim it is a result of fluvial processes …

Modified Guanidine-Containing Polymers For Intracellular Protein Delivery, Alfonso Barrios Jun 2022

Modified Guanidine-Containing Polymers For Intracellular Protein Delivery, Alfonso Barrios

FIU Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Protein-based therapeutics have gained significant attention for treating or curing various diseases, especially those untreatable by small molecule-drugs. Despite their widespread success and adoption, the cellular membrane remains a major obstacle for proteins to reach the inner compartments of the cell and have had limited applicability spanning only extracellular targets. Consequently, the efficient intracellular delivery of proteins offers tremendous potential to reach new, unexplored, and otherwise “undruggable” targets. Acknowledging the therapeutic need, research efforts aimed at facilitating the delivery of proteins using polymer-based nanoparticles have emerged.

Guanidine-containing polymers provide a promising platform to address the common hurdles associated with protein …

Gigapan® Photogrammetry For Outcrop Description, 3d Modeling, And 3d Printing, Preston Liles, Logan Pearson, Samantha Barnett, Dakota G. Simpson, David B. Fitzpatrick, Erik B. Larson, Maurice Testa

The Compass: Earth Science Journal of Sigma Gamma Epsilon

The collection of 3D information on geological media is fundamental for field geology, however it can be both time consuming and expensive. This report proposes a new method for the collection of 3D information of outcrops using simple to use and inexpensive technology. GigaPan® systems can be used to take high resolution images of outcrops and these images then be either left in 2D for additional description of the outcrop in the lab, or they can be processed in Autodesk 3ds Max® to create realistic 3D models of the outcrops which can then be 3D printed. The collection of this …

Evaluation Of Measurement Data Across Eight Gis Basemaps Using Drumlins: Combining Basemaps Is Optimal, Gretchen A. Wambach, Alexander K. Stewart Jun 2022

Evaluation Of Measurement Data Across Eight Gis Basemaps Using Drumlins: Combining Basemaps Is Optimal, Gretchen A. Wambach, Alexander K. Stewart

The Compass: Earth Science Journal of Sigma Gamma Epsilon

Choosing the best basemap for landform data collection and analysis is fundamental for accurate measurements and usability. Different types of basemaps may affect how we perceive relief through a map (Phillips et al., 1975); thereby, affecting the precision of data collected. This project collected length and azimuth data of 60 drumlins in Western, NY from four different, ArcGIS online (AGOL)-provided basemaps, as well as two parallel-to-strike and two perpendicular-to-strike hillshades (n=4). Testing the mean length (1,662m, ±529) and azimuth (171°, ±0.3) data for uniformity across basemaps determined if any basemap is more or less reliable for data collection. The Terrain …

Bathymetry Based Modeling Of Subaxial Magma Flows Under The Mid-Atlantic Ridge, 0 To 30° N, Adam R. Tjoelker, Neil Van Kanegan, Simon Detmer, C. Renee Sparks

The Compass: Earth Science Journal of Sigma Gamma Epsilon

Fracture patterns of the Mid-Atlantic Ridge (MAR) provide evidence of tectonic forces related to divergence and magma upwelling at the ridge axis. In this study, we focus on the MAR from 0 to 30° N, where the N-S ridge exhibits slow spreading rates (2-4 cm/yr) and pronounced axial topography. Ridge segments and transform faults identified in bathymetry data were analyzed for strike orientation and axial depth profiles. Azimuths of transform faults and ridge segments exhibit increasing clockwise rotation with latitude, and all have left lateral displacement. Bathymetric sampling along ridge segments occurred at 9 km intervals with 20 km sampling …

Quantitative Relationships Between River And Channel-Belt Planform Patterns, Tian Y. Dong, Timothy A. Goudge Jun 2022

Quantitative Relationships Between River And Channel-Belt Planform Patterns, Tian Y. Dong, Timothy A. Goudge

School of Earth, Environmental, and Marine Sciences Faculty Publications and Presentations

Channel planform patterns arise from internal dynamics of sediment transport and fluid flow in rivers and are affected by external controls such as valley confinement. Understanding whether these channel patterns are preserved in the rock record has critical implications for our ability to constrain past environmental conditions. Rivers are preserved as channel belts, which are one of the most ubiquitous and accessible parts of the sedimentary record, yet the relationship between river and channel-belt planform patterns remains unquantified. We analyzed planform patterns of rivers and channel belts from 30 systems globally. Channel patterns were classified using a graph theory-based metric, …

Synthesis And Applications Of Α,Β-Dehydroamino Acid-Containing Peptides, Diego A. Moya Jun 2022

Synthesis And Applications Of Α,Β-Dehydroamino Acid-Containing Peptides, Diego A. Moya

Theses and Dissertations

Yaku’amide A (YA) is a linear anticancer peptide that is rich in bulky dehydroamino acids (ΔAAs) and β-hydroxyamino acids (β-OHAAs). In our recent total synthesis of YA, we featured a one-pot anti dehydration–azide reduction–O→N acyl transfer process for the stereospecific construction of Z- and E- ∆Ile residues. Despite previous total syntheses and our efforts, the synthesis of YA remains lengthy. Via computational studies, we identified two analogue peptides that closely resemble the conformation of YA. The use of simpler and symmetrical bulky ΔAAs such as dehydrovaline (ΔVal) and dehydroethylnorvaline (ΔEnv) as surrogates of ∆Ile, along with azlactone chemistry for their …

Reduced-Scale Experiments And Numerical Simulations Of Informal Settlement Dwelling Fires, Vigneshwaran Narayanan, Antonio Cicicone, Ayden D. Botha, Richard Shaun Walls Jun 2022

Reduced-Scale Experiments And Numerical Simulations Of Informal Settlement Dwelling Fires, Vigneshwaran Narayanan, Antonio Cicicone, Ayden D. Botha, Richard Shaun Walls

Progress in Scale Modeling, an International Journal

Informal settlement dwellings (ISDs) house approximately one billion people in the developing world and this number is expected to double by the year 2030. Contemporary research on ISD fires has focused on understanding the fire dynamics within individual dwellings (micro-scale) and fire spread in settlements consisting of multiple dwellings (macro-scale). This paper aims to do two primary things: investigate if scaling methods that were derived for compartments with thermally thick boundaries can be applied to ISDs (compartments with thermally thin boundaries), and if they can adequately represent the most important phenomena associated with full-scale ISD fires; and demonstrate Fire Dynamics …

Detection And Quantification Of Arsenic Pollution With A Moss Bio-Indicator And Icp-Ms, Erin R. Bowey Jun 2022

Detection And Quantification Of Arsenic Pollution With A Moss Bio-Indicator And Icp-Ms, Erin R. Bowey

University Honors Theses

Heavy metal pollution is a recognized concern with an established source of anthropogenic activity, which is ever-increasing. While work has been done to make the monitoring of some metals more accessible, resourceful, and efficient with the use of epiphytic moss as a bio-indicator, this method has not been optimized for the detection of arsenic. Previously used analytical instrumentation has not proven sensitive enough to reliably detect arsenic, creating a gap in the monitoring process. However, inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (ICP-MS) is proposed as the solution to fill this gap. Its potential for low limits of detection and quantification express …

Calcium Bistriflimide-Mediated Sulfur (Vi)–Fluoride Exchange (Sufex): Mechanistic Insights Toward Instigating Catalysis, Nicholas Ball, Brian Han, Samuel R. Khasnavis, Matthew Nwerem, Michael Bertagna, O Maduka Ogba

Pomona Faculty Publications and Research

We report a mechanistic investigation of calcium bistriflimide-mediated sulfur(VI)–fluoride exchange (SuFEx) between sulfonyl fluorides and amines. We determine the likely pre-activation resting state─a calcium bistriflimide complex with ligated amines─thus allowing for corroborated calculation of the SuFEx activation barrier at ∼21 kcal/mol, compared to 21.5 ± 0.14 kcal/mol derived via kinetics experiments. Transition state analysis revealed: (1) a two-point calcium-substrate contact that activates the sulfur(VI) center and stabilizes the leaving fluoride and (2) a 1,4-diazabicyclo[2.2.2]octane additive that provides Brønsted-base activation of the nucleophilic amine. Stable Ca–F complexes upon sulfonamide formation are likely contributors to inhibited catalytic turnover, and a proof-of-principle redesign …

Space-Efficient Algorithms And Verification Schemes For Graph Streams, Prantar Ghosh Jun 2022

Space-Efficient Algorithms And Verification Schemes For Graph Streams, Prantar Ghosh

Dartmouth College Ph.D Dissertations

Structured data-sets are often easy to represent using graphs. The prevalence of massive data-sets in the modern world gives rise to big graphs such as web graphs, social networks, biological networks, and citation graphs. Most of these graphs keep growing continuously and pose two major challenges in their processing: (a) it is infeasible to store them entirely in the memory of a regular server, and (b) even if stored entirely, it is incredibly inefficient to reread the whole graph every time a new query appears. Thus, a natural approach for efficiently processing and analyzing such graphs is reading them as …
