Dissolved Oxygen Concentrations In Florida's Humic-Colored Waters And Water Quality Standard Implications, Thomas V. Belanger, Forrest E. Dierberg, Jerry Roberts
Ocean Engineering and Marine Sciences Faculty Publications
The Florida Department of Environmental Regulation has established detailed dissolved oxygen standards for the various classes of surface water in the state. The results of this study and a review of the literature reveal that many natural humic-colored aquatic systems (usually Class III waters) rarely meet the established 5 mg/L criteria. We believe, based on our studies, that these conditions are natural and do not result from organic pollution. In view of this, we believe a review of the current DER Standard, for humic-colored waters only, is in order.

Energy Utilization Model For Silver Perch, Bairdiella Chrysoura (Bioenergetics, Sciaenidae, Growth, Eelgrass, Chesapeake Bay), Hugh Anthony Brooks
Dissertations, Theses, and Masters Projects
An energetics model was constructed as an alternative method to length frequency analysis for the estimation of growth for juvenile silver perch, Bairdiella chrysoura. The model approach was adopted since estimation of juvenile estuarine fish growth by only collecting length or weight frequency data is difficult due to the large bodies of water and variety of microhabitats that must be regularly sampled over short time intervals. Field and laboratory data was included in analysis of model compartments for growth, metabolism, food intake and energy loss in waste products. Food habit studies indicated that silver perch is a planktivore that feeds …

Recent advances in experimental spectroscopy offer the promise of yielding much detailed information about molecular potentials and collisional interactions from a study of the light emitted or absorbed in the far wings of atomic lines. However, readily manipulable, accurate theoretical expressions and methods are needed to extract such knowledge. Straightforward formulas, based on the distorted-wave approximation, for the normalized emission intensity in the far wing of a pumped atomic line are given here. By normalizing theoretical spectra with respect to the strength of the atomic line, one obtains a convenient form for the analysis of experimental differential spectra that are …

Electron Capture In Pseudo-Two-Electron Systems: Ar8++He, M. Kimura, Ronald E. Olson
Physics Faculty Research & Creative Works
Molecular-structure calculations using the pseudopotential method have been performed on the (ArHe)8+ system. The cross section for single-electron capture in Ar8++He collisions was calculated for energies from 20 eV to 10 keV/amu. The perturbed-stationary-state method [M. Kimura, H. Sato, and R. E. Olson, Phys. Rev. A 28, 2085 (1983)], modified to include electron translation factors appropriate to two-electron systems, was used. The total cross section is relatively energy independent with a value of approximately 2.5x10-15 cm2. The n=4 level of Ar7+ is found to be preferentially populated, with the 4f level being dominant. © 1985 The …

A Continental Well-Aged Aerosol In The Guinean Savannah At The Level Of A Trough Along The Itcz, F. Desalmand, Josef Podzimek, R. Serpolay
Physics Faculty Research & Creative Works
Simultaneous measurements of Aitken nuclei, cloud condensation nuclei and aerosol particles sizes larger than 0.3 μm in the Guinean savannah during the dry season show an aerosol of very exceptional physical properties: numerous cloud condensation nuclei (2000-3000 per cm3) active at low supersaturation (or slight 'undersaturation'), absence of very small Aitken nuclei active at 180% of supersaturation and concentrations of large aerosol particles (D > 0.3 μm) between 30 and 60 per cm3. The analysis of the aerosol behavior during a 'typical' 24-hr period of the dry season and during a fog situation indicates that (1) the aerosol is a very …

Hydraulic fracturing stress measurements and acoustic borehole televiewer logs were run in holes USW G-1 and USW G-2 at Yucca Mountain as part of the Nevada Nuclear Waste Storage Investigations for the U.S. Department of Energy. Eight tests in the saturated zone, at depths from 646 to 1288 m, yielded values of the least horizontal stress Sh that are considerably lower than the vertical principal stress Sv. In tests for which the greatest horizontal principal stress SH could be determined it, was found to be less than S ν, indicating a normal faulting stress regime. …

Kinetics Of Reduction Of Cytochrome C Oxidase By Dithionite And The Effect Of Hydrogen Peroxide, M. Brunori, D. Bickar, J. Bonaventura, C. Bonaventura
Chemistry: Faculty Publications
The reduction of cytochrome c oxidase by dithionite was reinvestigated with a flow-flash technique and with varied enzyme preparations. Since cytochrome a3 may be defined as the heme in oxidase which can form a photolabile CO adduct in the reduced state, it is possible to follow the time course of cytochrome a3 reduction by monitoring the onset of photosensitivity. The onset of photosensitivity and the overall rate of heme reduction were compared for Yonetani and Hartzell-Beinert preparations of cytochrome c oxidase and for the enzyme isolated from blue marlin and hammer-head shark. For all of these preparations the faster phase …

The Inapplicability Of The Concept Of The "Sidney Gravel" To The Ogallala Group (Late Tertiary) In Part Of Southern Banner County, Nebraska, Robert F. Diffendal Jr.
School of Natural Resources: Faculty Publications
A series of geologic maps of counties in western Nebraska was prepared for the Nebraska Geological Survey during the mid-1 930s. These maps showed the distribution of rock units of Tertiary age including a formation designated as the “Sidney.” The Sidney Gravel was described as a widespread sheetlike complex of channel deposits, but with small areas where it is not developed. In southern Banner County, Nebraska, there are several channels filled with sand and gravel that were mapped as Sidney in this series. Recently one of these channel fills has been observed to cut across the other. The fills are …

Characteristics, Age Relationships, And Regional Importance Of Some Cenozoic Paleovalleys, Southern Nebraska Panhandle, Robert F. Diffendal Jr., James B. Swinehart, J. J. Gottula
School of Natural Resources: Faculty Publications
Few workers have reported previously on features of ancient valleys in western Nebraska. Six sites in the southern Nebraska Panhandle, ranging in age from Oligocene to Middle to Late Pleistocene, illustrate the characteristics and variability of Cenozoic paleovalleys. The dimensions of these paleovalleys vary from less than 0.1 km to more than 1.0 km in width and from less than 1.0 km to more than 100 km in length. Relief is as much as 35 m in outcrop. Four of the examples have valley sides that are nearly vertical. Potholes and other scour features occur at one site. Remnants of …

Cenozoic Paleogeography Of Western Nebraska, James B. Swinehart, Vernon F. Souders, Harold M. Degraw, Robert F. Diffendal Jr.
Robert F. Diffendal, Jr., Publications
The Cenozoic strata of western Nebraska are an extensive sequence of continental deposits that extend eastward from the Hartville, Laramie, and Front Range uplifts and southeast from the Black Hills. The oldest Cenozoic sediments (Chadron Formation, White River Group) are Early Oligocene alluvial valley fills. Subsequent to filling of these drainages and continuing for about the next 7 million years, landscape development in western Nebraska was dominated by eolian deposition of tremendous volumes of rhyolitic volcanic ash derived from western eruptions. A plain of low relief, with only an occasional narrow drainage heading in the western highlands, was maintained during …

The Determination Of Biological Activity And Biochemical Mode Of Action For The Oxadiazole And Diacylhdrazine Insecticides, Bonnie M. Gunn
Retrospective Theses and Dissertations
This report includes the determination of activity and possible mode of action for a group of potential new insecticides. The biological screening procedure was developed using Drosophila melanogaster as the test organism while Musca domestica was used for mode of action assays. The percent kill for each compound is based on the number of eggs placed on media containing the insecticide minus the number of adults enclosed as compared to the control media reared flies. Observations were made on all stages from eggs through adults to determine time of death and if any malformations were present. These observations aided in …

A Case Study In Maritime Boundary Delimitation: The Gulf Of Maine Dispute, Herbert D. Frerichs Jr.
Marine Affairs Theses and Major Papers
The Gulf of Maine area, including Georges Bank, has long been regarded as an area of special interest and importance to United States' fishermen. The riches of Georges Bank were known to New England fishermen in the 18th century, and early in the 19th century, fishermen from Gloucester, Massachusetts developed the halibut fishery on the Bank. Through the 19th century and util the 1950's the Georges Bank fishery was exclusively the province of new England fishermen. However, in the 1960's large factory fleets from the Soviet Union and Japan began to invade the waters of Georges Bank. The wave of …

Economic Genuine Link: Impacts On Liberian Flag Shipping, Victor E. Dougba
Marine Affairs Theses and Major Papers
Phasing out of open registries, supported by most developing nations at the United Nations Conference on Trade and Development (UNCTAD), would have triggered a chain reaction among open registries, ship owners, seafarers, and the revenues earned by those supplying shipboard labor. Adherence to the criteria proposed by developing states concerning economic "genuine link" is unsatisfactory to ship owners of developed nations, since it would increase their operating costs. Additionally, if the concept was enforced, it is likely that open registries would have experienced a massive dis-enrollment. The application of three techniques, the Chi-Square Statistic, and Index of Seafarer Displacement, and …

The Trinidad And Tobago/Venezuela Fishing Agreement, Zaleena K. Chin-Yuen-Kee
Marine Affairs Theses and Major Papers
The twin-island Republic of Trinidad and Tobago is situated adjacent to the Republic Of Venezuela such that at one point Trinidad is merely seven miles off the northeast coast of Venezuela. Fishing activities of nationals of each country in the waters of the other are therefore common and often lead to conflict. In an attempt to solve the fishing problem a fishing agreement was negotiated. It came into force in 1978 and expired in 1984 whereupon negotiations commenced once more in an attempt to achieve new accord. The fishing industries of both countries and the conflicts which led to the …
Potential Impacts Of Shipping Nationalism Upon A Round-The-World Shipping Service, Marc Bissonnette
Potential Impacts Of Shipping Nationalism Upon A Round-The-World Shipping Service, Marc Bissonnette
Marine Affairs Theses and Major Papers
Traditionally, carriers flying the American flag have concentrated on U. S. trades. The advent of new routing strategies in the container age has increased their ability to move cargo between foreign ports. As a result, their dependence on these cargoes is growing. An example is the "Sea Bridge" service introduced by United States Lines. With a round-the-world itinerary, this service may very well depend upon cargo carried between foreign ports in order to succeed. The ability of United States Lines to capture these foreign-to-foreign cargoes may be hampered by rising protectionism worldwide. The analysis presented here is in two separate …
