Elliptic Regularization For A Class Of Strongly Nonlinear Degenerate Eigenvalue Problems On Orlicz-Sobolev Spaces. I: The Ode Case, Pierre A. Vuillermot

Mathematics Technical Papers

This paper is devoted to proving sharp Holder-Lipschitz regularity estimates for the eigensolutione to a class of degenerate Sturm-Liouville eigenvalue problems with polynomial and exponential nonlinearities. The general method of proof represents as blending of a suitable regularization procedure along with a new method of auxiliary solutions, which we develop in detail. it allows one to exhibit a phenomenon of screening to regularity due to degeneracy and a new phenomenon of breakdown of regularity at short distances: while all of the eigensolutions are Lipschitz-continuous functions of their argument, their first derivatives exhibit a transition from Lipschitz-continuity to Hoder-continuity when the …

Particle Simulation Of Spiral Galaxy Evolution, Donald Greenspan Jan 1985

Particle Simulation Of Spiral Galaxy Evolution, Donald Greenspan

Mathematics Technical Papers

Spiral galaxies are modelled as n-body systems by means of long range and molecular-type short range forces. A relatively massive, elliptic, type core is sit into rotational motion in a less dense, tidal prone medium. Pressure waves result along whose leading edges there is increased luminosity, which develops in a spiral pattern.

College Fact Books Archives

The purpose of the 1985-1986 Fact Book is to provide organized, summarized information representing the various aspects of the College to be used by management in its decision-making process. Where possible, several years of historical data have been presented to provide perspective and to show trends. Because this is a summarized set of information, care should be taken when doing interdisciplinary comparisons because many factors may not be as comparable when taken out of context.

Changes In Forest Soils Following Clearcutting Of Pine Forests In The Ouachita Mountains Of Arkansas, Harlan R. Stoin, Bajuri Bin Kadmin, Lyell F. Thompson Jan 1985

Changes In Forest Soils Following Clearcutting Of Pine Forests In The Ouachita Mountains Of Arkansas, Harlan R. Stoin, Bajuri Bin Kadmin, Lyell F. Thompson

Journal of the Arkansas Academy of Science

Soil characteristics of the mineral surface soil (0-6 cm) on three small watersheds in the Ouachita Mountains of Arkansas from which the pine forests have been clearcut, crushed, and burned for site preparation were studied for the first two years following clearcutting and compared to soils from adjacent uncut pine forest watersheds. Following clearcutting and burning, soil pH was generally higher than in uncut forest soils. The greatest pH differences occurred within several months of burning and generally decreased through the end of the second year. Soil organic matter content was lower immediately following clearcutting and burning and increased to …

The Production Of Highly Unidirectional Lower-Hybrid Waves, R. Mcwilliams, M. Okubo, R. C. Platt, D. P. Sheehan Jan 1985

The Production Of Highly Unidirectional Lower-Hybrid Waves, R. Mcwilliams, M. Okubo, R. C. Platt, D. P. Sheehan

Physics and Biophysics: Faculty Scholarship

The development of a highly unidirectional lower-hybrid wave source would improve the electron current drive efficiency in tokamaks. Lower-hybrid waves launched from a phased wave array are shown to be reflected from a grid placed in a cold, low-density plasma. The antenna-grid combination results in highly unidirectional lower-hybrid waves.

Stability And Transition Of The Driven Magnetohydrodynamic Sheet Pinch, Russell B. Dahlburg Jan 1985

Stability And Transition Of The Driven Magnetohydrodynamic Sheet Pinch, Russell B. Dahlburg

Dissertations, Theses, and Masters Projects

The stability and transition properties of a bounded, current carrying magnetofluid are explored, using the hydrodynamic theory developed for plane shear flows as a guide. A driven magnetohydrodynamic sheet pinch equilibrium is employed. A sixth order, complex eigenvalue equation which governs the normal modes of small oscillations is derived, and solved numerically by the Chebyshev tau method. Eigenfunctions are shown, as well as the curve of neutral stability. The locus of critical Lundquist numbers has the form of a hyperbola. The nonlinear stability of a primary disturbance of the system is considered. For regions in parameter space close to criticality, …

Fourth Order Mass Splitting In The Bag Model, Timothy John Havens

Dissertations, Theses, and Masters Projects

The fourth order diagrams in the perturbative expansion of the hadron mass are calculated using the static spherical cavity approximation to the MIT bag model and Quantum Chromodynamics (QCD). Only terms with color matrix structure different than that of the second order diagrams are retained.;The fourth order mass splitting is found to be smaller than the second order splitting by a factor of three or more.

Bimetallic Tungsten Carbonyl Complexes, Jin-Guu Wang Jan 1985

Bimetallic Tungsten Carbonyl Complexes, Jin-Guu Wang

Masters Theses

Two heterobimetallic complexes, [(CO)4W(PPh2CH2CH2-PPh2)2MCl2]n ( M = Pd or Pt ), were prepared from the reaction of trans-W(CO)41-PPh2CH2CH2PPh2) 2 with M(COD)Cl2 (COD = cyclooctadiene). A trans arrangement about tungsten was found for both the palladium and platinum complexes. The square planar palladium center was shown to have a trans geometry in solution while a cis arrangement for the platinum moiety was observed. Far infrared studies indicated a mixture of cis and trans …

Palynology Of The Hagel Lignite Bed And Associated Strata, Sentinel Butte Formation (Paleocene), In Central North Dakota, Edward N. Steadman

Theses and Dissertations

The Hagel bed is an economically important lignite and is the lowest named lignite in the Sentinel Butte Formation, Fort Union Group. The Hagel bed extends throughout the Knife River Basin coal-mining area of central North Dakota. Stratigraphic sections of the Hagel bed, including intercalated clastic rocks, were measured in the highwalls of the Center mine, Glenharold mine, and Falkirk mine.

Samples from the stratigraphic sections were described and analyzed, using standard palynological techniques, for their palynomorph content. Palynomorphs proved to be well preserved and abundant. Maceration of Hagel bed samples yielded a diverse collection of palynomorphs. A total of …

Macrofossils And Biostratigraphy Of The Bakken Formation (Devonian And Mississippian) In Western North Dakota, Lawrence C. Thrasher

Theses and Dissertations

The Bakken Formation, up to 145 feet thick in North Dakota, is a subsurface formation in the Williston Basin that typically consists of two black shale members separated by a middle member of predominantly gray siltstone or silty limestone up to 85 feet thick.

Well over 500 macrofossils representing more than 50 taxa were collected from cores of 40 wells. Brachiopods, the most common fossil, represent 17 genera, 1 of which have not been previously reported from the Bakken. Nonbrachiopod fossils of this study, mostly not previously reported from the Bakken, are a hylothyrid, a conulariid, a syringoporid coral, several …

Late Quaternary Environmental And Climatic History Of The Southern Chilean Lake Region Interpreted From Coleopteran (Beetle) Assemblages, John W. Hoganson

Theses and Dissertations

A diverse Coleoptera fauna of 462 species in 48 families was collected from 41 locations in the Parque Nacional de Puyehue and adjacent parts of the Lake Region of southern Chile. The sample locations ranged from rain forest habitats at sea-level to Andean tundra habitats at 1500 m msl. Cluster analysis of a Dice similarity coefficient matrix revealed a broad pattern of bioassociations within the large data base, Boundaries between the bioassociations correspond largely with those of the major vegetation zones implying that the distribution of the fauna is strongly influenced by the distribution of plants. Evidence from fossils indicates …

A Quantitative Analysis Of Shoreline Erosion Processes, Lake Sakakawea, North Dakota, Mark D. Millsop Jan 1985

A Quantitative Analysis Of Shoreline Erosion Processes, Lake Sakakawea, North Dakota, Mark D. Millsop

Theses and Dissertations

Shoreline erosion is a problem at Lake Sakakawea and Lake Audubon, North Dakota. Land is lost, water quality is adversely affected, and reservoir storage capacity is decreased.

Instrumentation of the eastern shores of both lakes began in 1983 to quantify bank erosion by process (e.g., wave erosion, rainsplash and runoff, and frost-thaw failure). Other data gathered included: pool level fluctuations; wind velocity, direction, and duration; precipita tion; soil moisture; frost penetration; freeze-thaw cycles; and geology (e.g., texture, clay mineralogy and structure).

The magnitude of shoreline erosion is highly variable, especially within Lake Sakakawea. For the interval of May 1983 through …

Petrology Of The Sentinel Butte Formation (Paleocene), North Dakota, Nels F. Forsman Jan 1985

Petrology Of The Sentinel Butte Formation (Paleocene), North Dakota, Nels F. Forsman

Theses and Dissertations

Sedimentary materials of the Sentinel Butte Formation have been petrographically examined using optical and scanning electron micro scope/microprobe techniques. The formation consists of fine-grained materials which generally are classified mineralogically as volcanic litharenites or feldspathic litharenites. Most rock units in the formation are siltstones and mudstones. Multiple source rock types, including volcanic, metamorphic, and sedimentary, are represented by mineralogic constituents, but volcanic rock fragments are most abundant. Petrographic distinctions between basal and uppermost sandstone units suggest that a change in sediment supply took place near the end of Sentinel Butte time. Authigenic cement development appears concentrated in more porous and …

Petrology Of The Beulah-Zap Lignite Bed, Sentinel Butte Formation (Paleocene), Mercer County, North Dakota, David R. Kleesattel Jan 1985

Petrology Of The Beulah-Zap Lignite Bed, Sentinel Butte Formation (Paleocene), Mercer County, North Dakota, David R. Kleesattel

Theses and Dissertations

The Beulah-Zap lignite bed is one of several economically important lignites in the Sentinel Butte Formation (Paleocene). This lignite occurs as a subsurface unit in the Knife River Basin of Mercer and I Oliver counties of North Dakota. The Beulah-Zap lignite is a heterogeneous carbonaceous rock unit composed of megascopic and microscopic I components, which are lithotypes and macerals, respectively. Relationships between the maceral contents of the lithotypes follow patterns similar to those of bituminous coals. Coal petrology, the study of maceral and lithotype occurrence and I distribution, was applied to determine: 1) mode of coalification, and 2) depositional environment …

Metamorphism And Migmatization Of Metasediments In The Precambrian English River Subprovince, Western Ontario, Rodney M. Baumann Jan 1985

Metamorphism And Migmatization Of Metasediments In The Precambrian English River Subprovince, Western Ontario, Rodney M. Baumann

Theses and Dissertations

Metasediments of the Precambrian English River subprovince, a subdivision of the Superior province, are conspicuously migmatized by 'bands of light-colored, igneous-appearing material. The metasediments them.selves consist of alternating layers of pelite and wacke lithologies, which represent original mudstones and graywackes respectively. Their deposition is thought to represent subaqueous turbidity flows.

For the metasediments of the study area, a 250 square kilometer portion of the English River subprovince, metamorphic grade increases southward from the English River subprovince's northern border. Two isograds have been mapped: the disappearance of muscovite and the disappearance of stable sillimanite. Geothermometry studies are consistent with the trend …

Semileptonic Hyperon Decay - A Problem For Chiral Perturbation-Theory, Jf Donoghue, Br Holstein

Barry R Holstein

We study the recently computed mk2lnm2k corrections to hyperton beta decay found in chiral perturbation theory. The inclusion of these effects is not compatible with the high precision hyperon data, yielding a fit much inferior to the standard assumption of SU(3) invariance. This incompatibility of data and theory is a problem for the application of chiral perturbation theory.

Viscosity Measurements In Dilute Helium-3-Helium-4 Mixtures, George Schmiedeshoff Dec 1984

Viscosity Measurements In Dilute Helium-3-Helium-4 Mixtures, George Schmiedeshoff

George Schmiedeshoff

We have measured the viscosity of a dilute mixture of 3He in 4He at temperatures from 5 to 100 mK and in magnetic fields of 0.35, 2.01 and 8.76 T using a vibrating wire viscometer. Subject to our choice of calibration function, the data at 0.35 T is in good agreement with theory. Due to an interaction of our viscometer with the magnetic field the motion of the wire at 2.01 and 8.76 T is not understood; however, the 2.01 T data can be brought into agreement with the 0.35 T data by adjusting a geometrical constant. An increase in …

Quantitative Evaluation Of Enhancement Techniques, B. L. Deekshatulu, Arun D. Kulkarni, G. Kashipati Rao

Arun Kulkarni

Enhancement techniques are often used in image processing. In this paper, a quantitative measure of the image quality through evaluation of the coefficient of information content and the entropy has been suggested to evaluate the effect of enhancement. The image has been assumed to be a sample function of a homogeneous random field and the pixel values are estimated from the ‘past’ pixel values. The difference between the estimated value and the actual value of the pixel has been used as the criterion for defining the coefficient of information content. Also, the entropy obtained using the co-occurrance matrix of the …

On The Eigenvalue Problem For Toeplitz Matrices Generated By Rational Functions, William F. Trench

William F. Trench

We give formulas for the characteristic polynomial and eigenvectors of of $n\times n$ Toeplitz matrices generated by a formal Laurent series of a rational function $R(z)$. The formulas are in terms of a certain fixed polynomial with coefficients that are simple functions of $\lambda$ and the coefficients of $R(z)$. The complexity of the formulas is independent of $n$.
