The Relationship Of Self-Concept, Sex, Age, Major, Anxiety, Mathematics Background, And Mathematics Ability To The Level Of Mathematics And Statistical Anxiety Among College Juniors, David John Maysick
Dissertations
Problem. One's choice of career has significant effect upon one's future life in terms of earning potential and social interaction. Mathematics/statistical anxiety and the mathematics avoidance often accompanying such anxiety, can influence career choice, causing otherwise talented people to limit their future. The purpose of this study was to determine from selected variables--particularly self-concept--which, if any, were related to the problem of mathematics and/or statistical anxiety.
Method. The statistical sample used was 350 juniors. Stratification was by degree of mathematics content in subject's major field of study. For the study, subjects had to be in the same major category as …
Variable Ultraviolet Emission In Sy Muscae, A. G. Michalitsianos, Menas Kafatos
Variable Ultraviolet Emission In Sy Muscae, A. G. Michalitsianos, Menas Kafatos
Mathematics, Physics, and Computer Science Faculty Articles and Research
Following the enhancement in ultraviolet flux which we reported previously, we have continued monitoring the symbiotic variable SY Muscae with the International Ultraviolet Explorer (JUE). Over the course of one year, the prominent emission lines of N v, 0 v, C rv, He II appear to be gradually decreasing in absolute intensity. This appears to coincide with a steady decline in electron density in the emission line forming region, as suggested from the Sim] :\1892 and Cm] :\1909 intensity ratio. Our data is consistent with a sudden ejection event in which material expelled from the surface of a hot Teff …

Two hypotheses for dike emplacement are: (1) magma flows into and dilates pre-existing fractures; or (2) magma flows into and dilates self-generated fractures. In the first case dikes should be parallel to an element of the rock fabric; in the second, they should be perpendicular to the least compressive stress. The two hypotheses suggest different dike intrusion and fissure eruption mechanisms and therefore different strategies for monitoring igneous events at Long Valley. We derive a method to distinguish the two mechanisms, a priori, from in-situ stress measurements and estimates of magma pressure. Estimates of relative dilation and slip across a …

Instead of including every piece of information available, the creators have been more selective to insure that what is included …
Sediment Oxygen Demand In Streams Receiving Sewage Effluent, John J. Schultz
Sediment Oxygen Demand In Streams Receiving Sewage Effluent, John J. Schultz
Masters Theses
Sediment oxygen demand is an important factor in determining dissolved oxygen concentrations in streams and rivers subjected to sewage effluents and other sources of organic pollution. Resuspension of sediments during bottom-scouring after periods of heavy precipitation exerts an immediate and increased oxygen demand on the water and is expected to decrease sediment oxygen demand at the site.
Sediment samples were collected monthly from April through November, 1983 from three small streams subjected to sources of organic pollution. The samples collected were arbitrarily categorized into wet and dry period samples based on the total precipitation between collection dates. Sediment oxygen demand …

Vegetation Changes In Four Study Areas At Indiana Dunes National Lakeshore, Kathryn Ann Kerr
Vegetation Changes In Four Study Areas At Indiana Dunes National Lakeshore, Kathryn Ann Kerr
Masters Theses
The sampling transects at Indiana Dunes were established to show the pre-burn condition of the vetetation and to monitor the long term effects of burning. However, one year of monitoring showed changes in vetetation that further substantiate the need for the burning program.
Miller Woods (Transect A) has burned frequently in recent years. The one year without fire showed little change in the herbaceous layer. The few notable herbaceous changes might indicate a transition to a more mesic community, but should be viewed skeptically because of the wet season in 1982.
Nearly half of the small shrub species at Miller …
The Intermolecular Force Field Of Acetylene-Hcl: The Normal Coordinate And Centrifugal Distortion Analysis Of Two Weakly Bound Rigid Rods, Rebecca S. Lee
The Intermolecular Force Field Of Acetylene-Hcl: The Normal Coordinate And Centrifugal Distortion Analysis Of Two Weakly Bound Rigid Rods, Rebecca S. Lee
Masters Theses
In order to determine the intermolecular force field of C2H2⋅⋅HCl, a normal coordinate analysis appropriate for two weakly bound rigid rods is developed. An exact centrifugal distortion analysis is then carried out on the microwave spectrum of this "T''-shaped hydrogen-bonded π complex. The distortion constants and published matrix-isolated vibrational frequencies are employed in the normal coordinate analysis to obtain the intermolecular force field and refinements in the structural parameters. The following van der Waals force field is found to reproduce the existing spectroscopic constants of C2H2⋅⋅H35Cl … . This study …
The Purification And Partial Characterization Of The Surface Polysaccharides From Three Fast-Growing Rhizobium Japonicum Strains, Madhav P. Yadav
The Purification And Partial Characterization Of The Surface Polysaccharides From Three Fast-Growing Rhizobium Japonicum Strains, Madhav P. Yadav
Masters Theses
The fast-growing strains of R. japonicum were originally isolated from China. They are acid-producing Rhizobia and are capable of nodulating soybeans. These isolates share a common host-specificity (Peking soybean) with the slow-growing R. japonicum strains even though their biochemical properties are more closely related to other fast-growing Rhizobium species. The surface polysaccharides from three fast-growing R. japonicum strains--USDA201, USDA205, and HC205--were isolated and partially characterized. Strain HC205 is a nod⁻ mutant of USDA205 which lacks the symbiotic plasmid. These surface polysaccharides consist of extracellular, capsular and lipopolysaccharides (EPSs, CPSs and LPSs). The EPSs from all three strains are very similar …
A Study Of Oxygen Functional Groups In Illinois Coal Fractions, Kenneth R. Osborne
A Study Of Oxygen Functional Groups In Illinois Coal Fractions, Kenneth R. Osborne
Masters Theses
Ferric chloride/acetic anhydride reacted with butyl phenyl ether in acetonitrile at 80° to give a 75.6% yield of p-butoxyacetophenone. Reactions with benzyl aryl ethers gave 30% cleavage. The reaction of benzyl phenyl ether gave 10.3% p-benzyloxyacetophenone as well as cleavage product. Reaction of a pyridine soluble, toluene insoluble fraction (preasphaltene) of an Illinois No. 6 coal with ferric chloride/acetic anhydride in acetonitrile gave a product 94% insoluble in pyridine. The insolubility was ascribed to condensation reactions.
Phenols were measured in coals, preasphaltenes and preasphaltene derivatives by acetylation with acetic anhydride in pyridine. Suggestions for improvement in the method were presented. …

Topoi And Categories Of Fuzzy Sets, Lawrence Stout
Topoi And Categories Of Fuzzy Sets, Lawrence Stout
Lawrence N. Stout
Let H be a completely distributive lattice and hence a Heyting algebra. Goguen's category of fuzzy sets Set(H) Eytan's logos Fuz(H) and the topos of sheaves on H, Sh(H), are interconnected by pairs of adjoint functors between them. Each of the categories has a predicate calculus. These predicate calculi are related through the functors between the categories. Change of base lattice gives rise to several functors which preserve or reflect specific kinds of statements in the predicate calculi. This paper gives details of the categories, the predicate calculi attached to them, the functors between the categories, and the preservation properties …

Predicting The Proton Mass From Pi-Pi-Scattering Data, Jf Donoghue, E Golowich, Br Holstein
Barry R Holstein
We relate experimental information on ππ scattering to tree-level effective chiral Lagrangians. The result is of a form similar to that used in Skyrme-type models of the proton, where the nucleons are described as topologically stable solitons of the chiral fields. In such models, one can express the proton mass in terms of measured scattering data, with the result Mp=880±300 MeV. We interpret this as a consistency test for the Skyrme models.

Maximal Functions Measuring Smoothness, Ronald A. Devore, Robert C. Sharpley
Robert Sharpley
Maximal functions which measure the smoothness of a function are introduced and studied from the point of view of their relationship to classical smoothness and their use in proving embedding theorems, extension theorems and various results on differentiation. New spaces of functions which generalize Sobolev spaces are introduced.

Estimating Particle Sizes, Concentrations, And Total Mass Of Ash In Volcanic Clouds Using Weather Radar, David M. Harris, William I. Rose
Estimating Particle Sizes, Concentrations, And Total Mass Of Ash In Volcanic Clouds Using Weather Radar, David M. Harris, William I. Rose
Department of Geological and Mining Engineering and Sciences Publications
Observations of the March 19, 1982 ash eruption of Mount St. Helens, made by the National Weather Service (NWS, Portland, Oregon) on 5-cm radar, were used to estimate the volume of the ash cloud (2000 ±500 km3), the concentration of ash (0.2–0.6 g m−3). and the total mass of ash erupted (3–10×1011 g). The position of the cloud was also tracked by radar. Particle sizes in the ash cloud were estimated from settling velocities suggested by decreases in maximum ash cloud height with time as it moved away from the volcano. The March 19, 1982 …

Deer (odocoileus virginianus) depredations are a serious problem for many landowners and few landowners plan for these potential depredations. Fencing to restrict deer movements has become the most economical means of control. Several fence designs are available but the new electrified high tensile wire fences hold the most promise for deer control.

Rodent-Agriculture Interactions In No-Tillage Crop Fields, Kent E. Holm, Ron J. Johnson, Walter W. Stroup
Great Plains Wildlife Damage Control Workshop Proceedings
Acreage in reduced- and no-tillage farming systems has increased markedly in recent years, a trend that is expected to continue. However, small rodent populations thrive in these fields and at times dig and consume newly planted seeds and seedlings. During 1983, no-tillage corn, wheat and grain sorghum fields in western (Red Willow Co.) and eastern (Saline and Jefferson Cos.) Nebraska were evaluated to determine the distribution and food habits of the rodent species present, the damage to crops, and the availability of alternate rodent food sources. During June (post-emergence) and August (maximum corn height), 676 rodents were captured in 11 …

Some International Approaches To Rat Control, Walter E. Howard
Great Plains Wildlife Damage Control Workshop Proceedings
There are many basic requirements concerning the political structure, financial support needed, proper organization, staff training, public education, laws and regulations, and the keeping of good records, which must be adequately considered before a rat control program can become successful. Likewise, there are also a number of basic principles concerning rodent control that must be understood and adhered to. Some villages in Korea and the country of Kuwait will be used as examples of new rat control approaches.

Workshop-Discussion Session, Joesph M. Schaefer
Great Plains Wildlife Damage Control Workshop Proceedings
The purpose of the workshop-discussion session was to establish a list of ideas that would provide the best focus and direction to improve wildlife damage control programs. During this session the Nominal Group Technique (NGT) (Delbecq et al. 1975) was used to: 1) identify and rank obstacles that limit the effectiveness of wildlife damage control efforts, and 2) generate possible solutions to the most important obstacles. This format allowed equal and full participation and was successful in generating many original ideas.

Behavioral Ecology Of Coyotes: Implications For Reducing Predator-Livestock Conflicts, William F. Andelt
Great Plains Wildlife Damage Control Workshop Proceedings
During the past 2 decades, numerous research projects have been conducted to gain a better understanding of coyote (Canis latrans) behavior and ecology which could be used to reduce livestock losses to predators. This paper synthesizes some of these investigations to provide some insight into methods of reducing livestock losses to coyotes.
