Electrochemical And Spectroscopic Studies Of Some Less Stable Oxidation States Of Selected Lanthanide And Actinide Elements, David Edward Hobart Jun 1981

Electrochemical And Spectroscopic Studies Of Some Less Stable Oxidation States Of Selected Lanthanide And Actinide Elements, David Edward Hobart

Doctoral Dissertations

The technique of simultaneous observation of electrochemical and spectroscopic properties (spectroelectrochemistry) at optically transparent electrodes (OTE's) has been applied to the generation and characterization of some less stable oxidation states of selected lanthanide and actinide elements (Ce, Pr, Sm, Eu, Tb, Yb, U, Np, Am, and Cm) in complexing and noncomplexing aqueous solutions. Optically transparent electrodes used in this study included reticulated vitreous carbon (RVC) and metal screen OTE's and a new OTE made from porous metal foam (PMF).

Cyclic voltammetry at microelectrodes was used in conjunction with spectroelectrochemistry for the study of oxidation-reduction (redox) couples. In some cases additional …

Reconnaissance Glacio-Chemical Studies In The Indian Himalayas, Paul Andrew Mayewski, William Berry Lyons, Nasseruddin Ahmad

Earth Science Faculty Scholarship

Analysis of reactive silicate, ammonium, phosphate, iron and sodium from cores taken from three glaciers in the Kashmir portion of the Himalayas are reported as the first in a series of glacio-chemical studies designed to produce proxy paleoclimatic data for this region. This study stresses the elevation dependency of such studies and for the chemical species analyzed which are most reliable for the purpose of the study.

Acidity Of Recent Himalayan Snow, William Berry Lyons, Paul Andrew Mayewski, Nasseruddin Ahmad Jun 1981

Acidity Of Recent Himalayan Snow, William Berry Lyons, Paul Andrew Mayewski, Nasseruddin Ahmad

Earth Science Faculty Scholarship

Surface snows collected at various elevations in the Indian Himalayas were analyzed in the field for pH as part of a broader study of the chemistry. The pH values are lower than the predicted ≅5.6 for unpolluted precipitation. Analysis of NO3 + NO2, Cl, SO4 and NH4 indicate that these low pH values are not completely due to the presence of strong mineral acids. The strong correlation of pH with elevation (i.e. temperature) suggests that the low pH values are due to the snow being supersaturated with CO2.

Effects Of Three Vesicular-Arbuscular Mycorrhizal Fungi On Sweetgum Seedlings From Nine Mother Trees, Richard C. Schultz, Paul P. Kormanik, William C. Bryan Jun 1981

Effects Of Three Vesicular-Arbuscular Mycorrhizal Fungi On Sweetgum Seedlings From Nine Mother Trees, Richard C. Schultz, Paul P. Kormanik, William C. Bryan

Richard C. Schultz

Soil in microplots was infested with three vesicular-arbuscular (VA) symbionts then sown with seed of half-sib progeny from nine sweetgum mother trees. The VA treatments were Glomus fasciculatus, Glomus spp. (a mixture containing both Glomus mosseae and Glomus etunicatus), or a VA mixture of several fungi from the genera Glomus and Gigaspora. Before the seed was sown, all plots had calcium standardized and received an application of commercial fertilizer. During the growing season, NH4NO3 was applied to all plots in equal portions. Mycorrhizal seedlings with G. fasciculatus were slightly but not significantly larger in both height and root-collar diameter than …

Relative Stability Of Multiple Bonds To Silicon: An Ab Initio Study Of C2sih4 Isomers, Mark S. Gordon, Robert D. Koob Jun 1981

Relative Stability Of Multiple Bonds To Silicon: An Ab Initio Study Of C2sih4 Isomers, Mark S. Gordon, Robert D. Koob

Mark S. Gordon

Ab initio (6-31G*/ /3-21G) SCF calculations have been carried out on 15 isomers with the chemical formula C2SiH4• The isomers include structures with formal double and triple bonds to silicon, as well as carbenes and silylenes, so a direct comparison of these types of species is possible. The isomerization energies provide an opportunity to consider the relative strengths of analogous bonds to carbon and silicon. With the appropriate isodesmic reactions, the stabilizing or destabilizing effects of substituents and strain in three-membered rings both may be investigated.

Structure And Stability Of A Silicon-Carbon Triple Bond, Mark S. Gordon, John A. Pople Jun 1981

Structure And Stability Of A Silicon-Carbon Triple Bond, Mark S. Gordon, John A. Pople

Mark S. Gordon

The stability of the carbon-silicon triple bond in silaethyne is investigated via an analysis of its isomerization to silylidene and through a study of its hydrogenation energy relative to acetylene and silaethylene. It is found that silaethyne is rather unstable in a thermodynamic sense. However, while SCF calculations predict this species to rearrange to its more stable isomer with no barrier, the introduction of perturbation corrections suggests the existence of a small barrier separating the two isomers.

On App Decoding, Carlos R.P. Hartmann, Luther D. Rudolph, Kishan Mehrotra, Guy J. Snedeker

Electrical Engineering and Computer Science - Technical Reports

In this paper we show that APP decoding for a linear code C is optimum not for C, but for a minimum-distance-2 code which contains C as a subcode when the codewords of are transmitted with equal probability. However, APP decoding is shown to be a symptotically optimum for C for high SNR when C is a binary one-step orthogonolizable code with equiprobable codewords transmitted over the AWGN channel.

Dissertation: The Least Fixed Point Property For Ω-Chain Continuous Functions, Joe Mashburn Jun 1981

Dissertation: The Least Fixed Point Property For Ω-Chain Continuous Functions, Joe Mashburn

Mathematics Faculty Publications

The basic definitions are given in the first section, including those for ω-chain continuity, ω-chain completeness, and the least fixed point property for ω-chain continuous functions. Some of the relations between completeness and fixed point properties in partially ordered sets are stated and it is briefly shown how the question basic to the dissertation arises.

In the second section, two examples are given showing that a partially ordered set need not be ω-chain complete to have the least fixed point property for ω-chain continuous functions.

Retracts are discussed in section 3, where it is seen that they are not sufficient …

Research Scholars in Residence

Suppose X1,X2,...,Xn are independent non-negative random variables with finite positive expectations. Let Tn denote the stop rules for X1,...,Xn. The main result of this paper is that E(max{X1,...,Xn }) sup{EXt t ε Tn }. The proof given is constructive, and sharpens the corresponding weak inequalities of Krengel and Sucheston and of Garling.

A Survey Of Detection Methods For Ovulation And A Proposed Method For Estrogen Determination, Maria Lanni Jun 1981

A Survey Of Detection Methods For Ovulation And A Proposed Method For Estrogen Determination, Maria Lanni

Honors Theses

A rapid, accurate method of determining the exact phase of a menstrual cycle at a given time is extremely important. This information is vital to doctors studying menstrual abnormalities and more importantly as an aid in conceptive and contraceptive decisions. Many methods based on changes in the body have been used to detect ovulation. These nonquantitative methods depend on the cyclical variations in basal boy temperature, physical and chemical properties of mucus and content of saliva. These changes are influenced by changing hormone levels. Specicially, estrogen levels rise several days prior to ovulation, therefore, methods for determining estrogen concentration in …

Reports

This manuscript discusses the results of the first two and one half years of a three-year study designed to determine the present state of xenobiotic compounds in the Chesapeake Bay. It shows that polynuclear aromatic hydrocarbons are the most frequently encountered compounds and are the most abundant. Concentrations are highest in the Northern Bay with several sources implicated. During this study an apparent dumping of the pesticide, DDT, occurred. Either the quantity disposed of was small enough or the assimulation capacity was large enough that no adverse effects were noted. The detection by us of 6-phenyldodecane in bottom sediments of …

Electron Capture At Very Small Scattering Angles From Atomic Hydrogen By 25-125-Kev Protons, Paul J. Martin, D. M. Blankenship, Thomas J. Kvale, E. Redd, Jerry Peacher, John T. Park Jun 1981

Electron Capture At Very Small Scattering Angles From Atomic Hydrogen By 25-125-Kev Protons, Paul J. Martin, D. M. Blankenship, Thomas J. Kvale, E. Redd, Jerry Peacher, John T. Park

Physics Faculty Research & Creative Works

Differential cross sections for electron capture in collisions between protons and hydrogen atoms have been experimentally determined for incident proton energies of 25, 60, and 125 keV in the center-of-mass scattering-angle range of 0-3 mrad. The experimental results compare more favorably with the results of both a multistate and a two-state calculation than with the results of a continuum distorted-wave-approximation calculation. There is no evidence of a Jackson-Schiff-type minimum.

An Estimate For The Roots Of Random Algebraic Polynomial With Application, M. Sambandham, G. S. Ladde

Mathematics Technical Papers

An algebraic polynomial with dependent random coefficients is considered. The difference between the sample roots of random algebraic equation and the roots of the mean equation is estimated. As an application the difference between the sample solution of a random difference equation and the solution of the mean difference equation is also obtained.

Chemical And Biological Structure Of Lake Mead Sediments, Richard T. Prentki, Larry J. Paulson, John R. Baker Jun 1981

Chemical And Biological Structure Of Lake Mead Sediments, Richard T. Prentki, Larry J. Paulson, John R. Baker

Publications (WR)

Lake Mead has undergone a serious decline since Glen Canyon Dam was constructed 450 km upstream in 1963.

State fisheries management agencies are concerned that the decline was caused by water level fluctuations and more severe drawdowns during the bass spawning season, when the operation of Hoover Dam was altered during the post-Lake Powell period.

The construction of Glen Canyon Dam and formation of Lake Powell in 1963 drastically altered the natural discharge and temperature cycles and decreased suspended sediment and nutrient loading in the Colorado River inflow to Lake Mead. Recent studies indicate that these changes in nutrient loading …

Physics Faculty Research & Creative Works

Experimentally and theoretically determined differential cross sections are reported for electron capture in collisions of protons with helium atoms for incident proton energies of 25, 30, 50, and 100 keV and for center-of-mass scattering angles of 0.0 to 2.0 mrad. The magnitudes of the experimentally determined differential cross sections decrease from 10-10 to 10-12 cm2/sr within the 0.0-0.8-mrad range of the center-of-mass scattering angle. At approximately 0.8 mrad a distinct change in the slope of the differential cross section is observed. The experimental results which are for capture into all bound states of hydrogen are compared …

Existence Theorems For A Class Of Functional Differential Systems, B. G. Pachpatte, G. S. Ladde Jun 1981

Existence Theorems For A Class Of Functional Differential Systems, B. G. Pachpatte, G. S. Ladde

Mathematics Technical Papers

In recent papers [2,6], the authors have established existence and comparison theorems for the well known Cauchy problem for ordinary differential equations without using the monotone property on the given system. These results are obtained under the conditions of the type which have been considered in the classical paper of Müller [8]. The interesting feature of the results established in [2,6], is the fact that the solutions of the Cauchy problem remain in the given sector. In this paper, we shall first establish existence and comparison theorems for a class of more general functional differential systems without using monotone property. …

Monotone Method For Equations Describing Transport Phenomena In A Banach Space, A. S. Vatsala, B. G. Pachpatte

Mathematics Technical Papers

Existence of extremal solutions of initial and boundary value problems (B.V.P. for short) of differential equations in a Banach space has been recently considered in [2,7] by utilizing monotone iterative method. A special type of B.V.P. of the form [see pdf for notation] in finite dimensional spaces have been recently investigated in [6]. It is of interest to investigate (1.1) in a Banach space since special forms of them occur in transport processes [1,8,9]. In order to develop monotone technique for (1.1) it becomes necessary to develop a comparison Theorem (see Theorem 2.1) which is of interest in itself. The …

A Morphometrical Analysis Of The Guinea Pig Placenta After Chronic Exposure To Carbon Monoxide, Marcella J. Woolsey Jun 1981

A Morphometrical Analysis Of The Guinea Pig Placenta After Chronic Exposure To Carbon Monoxide, Marcella J. Woolsey

Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects

We used morphometric analysis to determine if placental structure is modified by carbon monoxide, Camm-Hartley guinea pigs were exposed throughout gestation to chronic conditions of carbon monoxide (averaging about 180 parts per million). Maternal weight, placental weight, fetal weight, and fetal length were recorded at the time of placental fixation. Using a computerized image analyzer on photomicrographs obtained through light microscopy, we measured maternal and fetal percent vessel volumes, surface areas, and vessel numbers. Maternal vessel numbers and surface area remained basically unchanged but decreased slightly. Maternal percent volume decreased 15%. However, fetal capillary number increased 35% (p < 0.01) from a control value of 2325 ± 184 per mm2 (SE …

Direct Nmr Observation Of Rotational Freeze-Out In The Smectic C-Phase, Demetri J. Photinos, Philip J. Bos, Mary E. Neubert, J. William Doane

Philip J. Bos

We report here a simple and direct observation that the molecular long axis is not, on the average, a rotation axis for the entire molecule in the smectic C phase (rotational freeze-out). This observation is made in the compound 4-n-heptyl-d15-oxybenzoic acid-d1 where experiment clearly shows that the principal axes of the time-averaged deuterium quadrupole interactions at specific sites of the hydrocarbon chain are not all parallel, demonstrating that they do not share a common axis of rotation.
