Social Behavior And Activity Patterns Of Meadow Voles In Relation To Seasonal Change And Snow Cover, Ronald J. Brooks, A. Bruce Webster Mar 1981

Social Behavior And Activity Patterns Of Meadow Voles In Relation To Seasonal Change And Snow Cover, Ronald J. Brooks, A. Bruce Webster

Eastern Pine and Meadow Vole Symposia

Activity and social behavior of free-ranging meadow voles (Microtus pennsylvanicus) were examined in summer, fall, and winter using capture-recapture and radiotelemetry. The composition of our study population changed from predominantly reproductively-active (RA) voles in summer and fall to entirely non-reproductively-active (NR) voles in winter. RA males had larger activity areas than RA females. Activity areas of RA females did not overlap with those of other RA females, but activity areas of RA males overlapped extensively with those of both RA males and RA females. However, any contact among RA voles was rare, unless females were estrous. NR voles …

Fluid Fertilizers, Kenneth L. Wells Mar 1981

Fluid Fertilizers, Kenneth L. Wells

Soil Science News and Views

Fluid fertilizers are available in a wide range of products to Kentucky farmers. Although the term "liquid fertilizer" is commonly used to describe all fluid fertilizers, in reality the two terms do not imply the exact same meaning. Technically, all fertilizers of fluid consistency which can be transferred by pump are called "fluid f ertilizers11. This is the proper term to use in the broadest sense to describe such materials. There are two general types of fluid fertilizers. One group is called "suspensions" or "slurries", and the other group is referred to as "clear liquids".

Seasat Altimetry Adjustment Model Including Tidal And Other Sea Surface Effects, Georges Blaha Mar 1981

Seasat Altimetry Adjustment Model Including Tidal And Other Sea Surface Effects, Georges Blaha

Marine & Environmental Sciences Faculty Reports

This study is a part of the on-going effort aimed at improved determinations of the earth's gravity field through the adjustment of satellite altimeter data in the short-arc mode. Until recently the key role in such adjustments has been played by GEOS-3 altimeter data. However, SEASAT altimetry is envisioned as providing a more accurate means for addressing this task.

In view of the improved quality of altimeter data and of the corresponding more stringent requirements for the data reduction, several improvements in the existing altimetry model have been designed and are described herein. For example, the criteria have been established …

Magnetic Properties Of Rare Earth-Gallium-Iron Glasses, S.G. Cornelison, David J. Sellmyer, George C. Hadjipanayis Mar 1981

Magnetic Properties Of Rare Earth-Gallium-Iron Glasses, S.G. Cornelison, David J. Sellmyer, George C. Hadjipanayis

David Sellmyer Publications

Results of magnetic susceptibility, high-field magnetization, and Mössbauer effect are reported for several R-Ga and R-Ga-Fe metallic glasses, where R = Pr and Tb. Magnetic ordering temperatures, effective moments, and coercive forces were determined. In certain cases the data indicate that the low temperature states of magnetic order are asperomagnetic or spin-glass-like. For (Pr80Ga20)80Fe20, several anomalies were observed including a large coercive field (45 kOe) at 100 K. Journal of Applied Physics is copyrighted by The American Institute of Physics.

Radar Interferometry: A New Technique For Studyingplasma Turbulence In The Ionosphere, D. T. Farley, H. M. Ierkic, Bela G. Fejer Mar 1981

Radar Interferometry: A New Technique For Studyingplasma Turbulence In The Ionosphere, D. T. Farley, H. M. Ierkic, Bela G. Fejer

Bela G. Fejer

A new radar interferometer technique has been developed and used successfully at the Jicamarca Radio Observatory in Peru to study the strong nighttime plasma turbulence in the equatorial electrojet. The technique represents a major step forward in radar probing of turbulent irregularities such as (but not limited to) those in the electrojet. In many situations it provides far more information than previous Doppler measurements. We form the cross spectrum of the backscattered signals received from approximately overhead on two antennas, separated in this case along an east-west baseline, as well as the individual power spectra. From the phase of the …

Application Of Information Theory To The Construction Of Efficient Decision Trees, Carlos R.P. Hartmann, Pramod Varshney, Kishan Mehrotra, Carl L. Gerberich Mar 1981

Application Of Information Theory To The Construction Of Efficient Decision Trees, Carlos R.P. Hartmann, Pramod Varshney, Kishan Mehrotra, Carl L. Gerberich

Electrical Engineering and Computer Science - Technical Reports

This paper treats the problem of conversion of decision tables to decision trees. In most cases, the construction of optimal decision trees is an NP-complete problem and, therefore, a heuristic approach to this problem is necessary. In our heuristic approach, we apply information theoretic concepts to construct efficient decision trees for decision tables which may include “don’t-care” entries. In contrast to most of the existing heuristic algorithms, our algorithm is systematic and has a sound theoretical justification. The algorithm has low design complexity and yet provides us with near-optimal decision trees.

Angular Differential And Total Cross Sections For The Excitation Of Atomic Hydrogen To Its N=2 State By Helium Ions, Judith E. Aldag, Jerry Peacher, Paul J. Martin, V. C. Sutcliffe, Jacob M. George, E. Redd, Thomas J. Kvale, D. M. Blankenship, John T. Park Mar 1981

Angular Differential And Total Cross Sections For The Excitation Of Atomic Hydrogen To Its N=2 State By Helium Ions, Judith E. Aldag, Jerry Peacher, Paul J. Martin, V. C. Sutcliffe, Jacob M. George, E. Redd, Thomas J. Kvale, D. M. Blankenship, John T. Park

Physics Faculty Research & Creative Works

Differential cross sections for 15-100 keV He+ excitation of atomic hydrogen to its n=2 level have been determined for c.m. angles from 0 to 8 mrad. The differential cross sections are obtained from an analysis of the angular distribution of the scattered ions which have lost an energy corresponding to the excitation of the target to its n=2 level. The shape of the differential cross section changes rapidly with increasing incident energy. At 15 keV, the differential cross section falls off by a factor of 5 in 6 mrad. At 100 keV, the differential cross section decreases by nearly …

Ammonia Adsorption And Decomposition On A Ni(Ll0) Surface, M. Grunze, M. Golze, R.K. Driscoll, Peter A. Dowben Mar 1981

Ammonia Adsorption And Decomposition On A Ni(Ll0) Surface, M. Grunze, M. Golze, R.K. Driscoll, Peter A. Dowben

Peter Dowben Publications

We report UPS/XPS results for ammonia adsorption and decomposition on a Ni(1 10)-surface. At T < 130 K molecular adsorption of NH 3 is observed to proceed with an initial sticking coefficient of s 0-0.1. Increasing the temperature of the nickel surface above 150 K results in partial dissociation of the adsorbed NH 3 molecules. The intermediate species are tentatively identified by their photoelectron spectra as NH-fragments. At temperatures above 350 K only atomic nitrogen is observed to populate the surface after NH 3-exposures. Our data show a similar reactivity of the Ni(ll0) surface in the NH 3-decomposition reaction as found on iron-single crystal …

Specifying And Proving Properties Of Sentinels, Krithivasan Ramamritham, Robert M. Keller Mar 1981

Specifying And Proving Properties Of Sentinels, Krithivasan Ramamritham, Robert M. Keller

All HMC Faculty Publications and Research

This paper presents a technique for specifying and verifying properties of "sentinels," a high-level language construct for synchronizing access to shared resources. Statements in the specification language possess formal temporal semantics. As a prelude to proving the correctness of sentinels, the semantics of constructs used in sentinels is given. The proof technique involves showing that the temporal behavior of a sentinel conforms to that defined by the specification. The methodology is illustrated by applying it to a typical synchronization problem.

Algorithms For Pipe Network Analysis And Their Reliability, Don J. Wood Mar 1981

Algorithms For Pipe Network Analysis And Their Reliability, Don J. Wood

KWRRI Research Reports

Algorithms for analyzing steady state flow conditions in pipe networks are developed for general applications. The algorithms are based on both loop equations expressed in terms of unknown flowrates and node equations expressed in terms of unknown grades. Five methods, which represent those in significant use today, are presented. An example pipe network is analyzed to illustrate the application of the various algorithms. The various assumptions required for the different methods are presented and the methods are compared within a common framework.

The reliabilities of these commonly employed algorithms for pipe network analysis are investigated by analyzing a large number …

Vole Damage And Control Methods In Ontario Orchards, Ronald J. Brooks, Lin Schwarzkopf Mar 1981

Vole Damage And Control Methods In Ontario Orchards, Ronald J. Brooks, Lin Schwarzkopf

Eastern Pine and Meadow Vole Symposia

In Ontario, herbivorous mammals inflict extensive damage upon fruit tree ocrchards and hardwood plantations (Radvanyi 1974 a, b; C. Dufault pers. commun., Hikichi pers. commun.). Nevertheless, surprisingly little research has been directed toward reduction or control of this damage and, therefore, growers continue to suffer substantial annual economic losses. Ontario appears to offer no specific guidelines to assist growers in developing effective long-term control programs for mammalian pests in their orchards. Recommended methods of control are limited to brief, general pamphlets most of which have shown little substantive change over the past few decades. There have been virtually no experimental …

Progress And Prospect Of A Bioenergetic Simulation Model Of Pine Vole Populations, John F. Coyle, Kevin C. Jordan, Alan R. Tipton, Roy L. Kirkpatrick

Eastern Pine and Meadow Vole Symposia

As reported previously (Coyle and Tipton 1980), we have been engaged in the development of a computerized system which outlines the basic demographic features of a pine vole population. The system, when complete, will hopefully contain four subsystems (biological, spatial, control and economic). This paper will discuss the biological submodel, its development and validity, and prospects for its future.

Effect Of Photoperiod On Activity Patterns In Pine Voles (Microtus Pinetorum), Jack A. Cranford Mar 1981

Effect Of Photoperiod On Activity Patterns In Pine Voles (Microtus Pinetorum), Jack A. Cranford

Eastern Pine and Meadow Vole Symposia

Light is an environmental variable which has considerable effect on small mammal activity patterns. This constantly repeating 24 hour signal provides information on a daily basis and has been shown to synchronize all physiological patterns in an animals existence. Laboratory studies have shown that pine voles are slightly nocturnal (Pearson, 1947) or confined their activity to the hours of twilight and darkness (Werner, 1951). Both authors indicate that activity occurs in bouts of about 1 hour duration followed by an hour of rest. Benton (1955) observed from trapping that more activity occurred at night but cautioned that due to the …

Recommendations For Master's Level Programs In Computer Science: A Report Of The Acm Curriculum Committee On Computer Science, Kenneth I. Magel, Richard H. Austing, Alfs Berztiss, Gerald L. Engel, John Wesley Hamblen, A. A.J. Hoffmann, Robert Mathis

Computer Science Faculty Research & Creative Works

The ACM Committee on Curriculum in Computer Science has spent two years investigating master's degree programs in Computer Science. This report contains the conclusions of that effort. Recommendations are made concerning the form, entrance requirements, possible courses, staffing levels, intent, library resources, and computing resources required for an academic, professional, or specialized master's degree. These recommendations specify minimum requirements which should be met by any master's programs. The Committee believes that the details of a particular master's program should be determined and continually updated by the faculty involved. A single or a small number of model programs are not as …

Fixed Point Theorems For Expanding Maps, B. B. Williams, A. A. Gillespie Mar 1981

Fixed Point Theorems For Expanding Maps, B. B. Williams, A. A. Gillespie

Mathematics Technical Papers

Suppose (X,d) is a metric space, h > 0 and T: X -> X. We shall use the notation T E E(h) to mean [see pdf for notation] for each x,y E X. If h > 1, then T will be called an expanding map. Clearly T E E(h) implies T is a 1-1 function and [see pdf for notation] for each x,y E T(X). In this paper some conditions are found to insure that an expanding map will have a fixed point. It is shown that each finite dimensional Banach space X has the following property: each continuous and expanding map …

Comparing Three Water Quality Sampling Techniques For Measuring Non-Point Source Pollution In Forest Streams, R. Scott Beasley Mar 1981

Comparing Three Water Quality Sampling Techniques For Measuring Non-Point Source Pollution In Forest Streams, R. Scott Beasley

Arkansas Water Resources Center Technical Reports

Coshocton wheel samplers, ISCO pumping samplers, and single stage samplers were compared on each of three small (5-6 ha), forested watersheds in the Ouachita Mountains of central Arkansas. The objective of the comparisons was to evaluate the performance of each sampling method in providing reliable samples for measuring concentrations of total suspended solids (TSS). H-flumes and water level recorders provided stream discharge data; a network of recording and non-recording raingages provided preciptation measurements. Rainfall and storm discharges during the study period were unusually low. No samples were collected by the single stage samplers. They appear unsuited for use on small …

Quasi-Invariant Manifolds, Stability, And Generalized Hopf Bifurcation, L. Salvadori, Stephen R. Bernfeld

Mathematics Technical Papers

We are interested in obtaining an analysis of the bifurcating periodic orbits arising in the generalized Hopf bifurcation problems in Rn. The existence of these periodic orbits has often been obtained by using such techniques as the Lyapunov-Schmidt method or topological degree arguments (see Marsden and McCracken [8] and Hale [6] and their references). Our approach, on the other bend, is based upon stability properties of the equilibrium point of the unperturbed system. Andronov et. al. [1] showed the fruitfulness of this approach in studying bifurcation problems in R2 (for more recent papers see Negrini and Salvadori [9] and Bernfeld …

Applications Of Differential Inequalities To Persistence And Extinction Problems For Reaction-Diffusion Systems, Linda Joy Allen Feb 1981

Applications Of Differential Inequalities To Persistence And Extinction Problems For Reaction-Diffusion Systems, Linda Joy Allen

Doctoral Dissertations

Systems of nonlinear reaction-diffusion equations representing models of competition, predation, and mutualism are presented and discussed. The models are divided into two categories, patch models and continuous models which can be represented by systems of ordinary differential equations or by systems of partial differential equations, respectively. Within each of these categories there are four types of diffusion mechanisms, random, biased, directed, and predator-prey diffusion. Conditions for system persistence and extinction are sought.

For the patch models, existence, uniqueness, positivity, and boundedness of solutions are discussed. Persistence of a nonnegative component ui (t) means limsup/t→∞ ui (t) > 0 versus …

Asymptotic Theory Of Extimation When The Limit Of The Log-Likelihood Ratios Is Mixed Normal., P. Jeganathan Dr.

Doctoral Theses

In one of his fundamental papers Le Can (1960) introduced what is now called locally asymptotically normal (LAN) families of distributions and obtained several basic results regarding the asymptotic theory of estimation and testing. Roughly speaking, a sequence of families is said to satisfy the LAN condition if the corresponding sequence of appropriately normalised log-likelihood function is locally approximated with probability tending to one by the sum of two expressions, the first one being a sequence of rand om linear functions of the normalised parameter and the second one being a non-random quadratic form of the normalised parameter, and the …
