Vole Management Studies-1978, Jay Mcaninch Feb 1979

Vole Management Studies-1978, Jay Mcaninch

Eastern Pine and Meadow Vole Symposia

Earlier studies at the Cary Arboretum (McAninch, 1978) have described mowing and general cultural management practices as key elements in vole management programs. During the 1978 growing season, studies were initiated to quantify several soil parameters and vegetative elements in fruit orchards and correlate these characteristics to the distribution and abundance of vole populations. Although a great deal of additional orchard-vole data has been generated, only the associations described above will be discussed in this paper.

Eastern Pine and Meadow Vole Symposia

In this paper we 1) review briefly the rodent damage problem in New York orchards, 2) discuss aspects of the basic biology of pine voles (Pitymys pinetorum) and meadow voles (Microtus pennsylvanicus) that might be used to advantage in designing new control techniques, and 3) describe field experiments now in progress.

Cost Of Controlling Pine Voles By Different Methods, William T. Sullivan Jr. Feb 1979

Cost Of Controlling Pine Voles By Different Methods, William T. Sullivan Jr.

Eastern Pine and Meadow Vole Symposia

A question often raised by apple growers, researchers, and agencies is "What does it cost on a per-acre basis to control pine and meadow voles?". In most cases this question refers to the methods and techniques presently known. At the Second Pine and Meadow Vole Symposium we described a new long-term study (Sullivan and Hayne 1978). This study provides answers to some of these basic cost questions. This year I am presenting some cost figures for the 1977 and 1978 seasons, recorded in treating the orchards in the study described at Beltsville. The efficacy of the treatments in controlling voles …

I don't have an orchard of my own, but as a field representative for FMC Corp. Direct Sales Group, I have the responsibility to check for mice in many orchards and a chance to form an opinion as to what methods are working in our area and how a field representative can be of the most value.

Behavioral Responses Of Pine Vole Young And Adults To Olfactory Cues, Lynette A. Geyer Feb 1979

Behavioral Responses Of Pine Vole Young And Adults To Olfactory Cues, Lynette A. Geyer

Eastern Pine and Meadow Vole Symposia

Ultrasonic vocalization rates of young pine voles are highest when pups begin to move into and out of nests and exhibit olfactory directed movement. As olfactory preferences become established and movement is coordinated, a decline in vocalization appears in pine vole. In the presence of home shavings young pine voles emit high rates of vocalization, while rat pups emit calls at a low rate. This contrast may relate to the intensive attachment of young pine voles to the mother in early life. In preliminary studies of adults, priming either the male or female with the odor of a prospective social …

Nonenzymatically Glucosylated Albumin: In Vitro Preparation And Isolation From Normal Human Serum, James F. Day, Suzanne R. Thorpe, John W. Baynes Feb 1979

Nonenzymatically Glucosylated Albumin: In Vitro Preparation And Isolation From Normal Human Serum, James F. Day, Suzanne R. Thorpe, John W. Baynes

Faculty Publications

Incubation of human serum with D-[6-3H]glucose resulted in the gradual accumulation of radioactivity in acid-precipitable material. Upon chromatography on Sephadex G-200, radioactivity was found associated with each of the major molecular weight classes of serum protein. Purified human serum albumin was also glucosylated in vitro upon exposure to D-[6-3H]glucose in phosphate-buffered saline. The glucosylated and unmodified albumins were separated by ion exchange chromatography. The physiological significance of these observations in vitro was confirmed by the isolation and quantitation of glucosylated albumin from normal human serum. Glucosylated albumin represents approximately 6 to 15% of total serum albumin in normal adults. The …

A Proof Procedure For Quantifier-Free Non-Clausal First Order Logic, Neil V. Murray Feb 1979

A Proof Procedure For Quantifier-Free Non-Clausal First Order Logic, Neil V. Murray

Electrical Engineering and Computer Science - Technical Reports

A proof procedure is described which operates on formulas of the predicate calculus which are quantifier-free. The procedure, which involves a single inference rule called NC-resolution, is shown to be complete. Completeness is also obtained for a simple restriction on the rule’s application. Examples are given using NC-resolution not only for synthesis of a logic program from its specification, but for execution of a program specification in its original form.

Lake Mead And Lake Powell Salinity Reports, Cathy Lee, Steve Gazafy

Publications (WR)

The enclosed reports were compiled for the Colorado River Water Quality Office based on salinity data for Lake Mead and Lake Powell. According to the regional director of the office, the reports are not considered "polished" documents for public distribution. However, he considers them to be "interesting, rough appraisals of general trends that may be very important In our understanding the hydro-salinity system in the Colorado River."

Diabatic And Adiabatic Representations For Atomic Collision Processes, John B. Delos, W. R. Thorson Feb 1979

Diabatic And Adiabatic Representations For Atomic Collision Processes, John B. Delos, W. R. Thorson

Arts & Sciences Articles

ABSTRACT A consistent general definition of diabatic representations has not previously been given, even though many practical examples of such representations have been constructed for specific problems. Such a definition is provided in this paper. Beginning with a classical trajectory formulation, we describe the form and behavior of velocity‐dependent couplings in slow collisions, including the effects of electron‐translation factors (ETF’s). We compare the couplings arising from atomic representations and atomic ETF’s with those arising from molecular representations and ’’switching function’’ ETF’s. We show that a unique set of switching functions makes the two descriptions identical in their effects. We then …

Methodology For Testing Homogeneity Of Variances, Danny D. Dyer, Jerome P. Keating Feb 1979

Methodology For Testing Homogeneity Of Variances, Danny D. Dyer, Jerome P. Keating

Mathematics Technical Papers

Suppose random samples are drawn from each of n populations with unknown means and variances. Developing procedures to test the claim that the population variances are equal (homogeneity of variances) has frequently been a goal for statisticians. One widely used technique is due to Bartlett (1937) and is based on a slight modification of the generalized Neyman-Pearson likelihood ratio test. It is well known, however, that Bartlett's test is highly sensitive to the assumption that the underlying populations are normal (Box, 1953). If nonnormality is present, the use of Bartlett's test can often lead to the rejection of the claim …

Lake Erie Induced Mesosystems- An Operational Forecast Model, Kenneth F. Dewey Jan 1979

Lake Erie Induced Mesosystems- An Operational Forecast Model, Kenneth F. Dewey

School of Natural Resources: Faculty Publications

All Lake Erie lake-effect days for a 10-year period prior to the 1976-77 snowfall season were utilized in the development of an operational lake-effect snowfall forecast model. Upper air and surface observation were combined with overlake data and analyzed, using stepwise multiple-discriminant analysis. A nine-predictor mesoscale forecast model resulted from this statistical test and its performance was evaluated during the 1976-77 and 1977-78 snowfall seasons. The results of this evaluation indicate that it is possible to predict six intensities of the Lake Erie lake-effect snowstorm using this mesoscale model.

He+ Lamb-Shift Measurement By The Quenching-Radiation Anisotropy Method, Gordon W. F. Drake, S. P. Goldman, A. Van Wijngaarden Jan 1979

He+ Lamb-Shift Measurement By The Quenching-Radiation Anisotropy Method, Gordon W. F. Drake, S. P. Goldman, A. Van Wijngaarden

Physics Publications

The Lamb shift of He+ is derived from the measured anisotropy in the electric-field-induced quenching radiation of the metastable 2s12 state. The results demonstrate that the anisotropy method can be applied with high precision to one-electron ion beams, as well as neutral beams. We find a Lamb shift of 14040.22.9 MHz (1 standard deviation). The sources of error and difficulties encountered in working with ion beams are discussed in detail. © 1979 The American Physical Society.

Unified Relativistic Theory For 1s2p P13-1s2 S01 And 1s2p P11-1s2 S01 Frequencies And Transition Rates In Heliumlike Ions, Gordon W. F. Drake Jan 1979

Unified Relativistic Theory For 1s2p P13-1s2 S01 And 1s2p P11-1s2 S01 Frequencies And Transition Rates In Heliumlike Ions, Gordon W. F. Drake

Physics Publications

The aim of this paper is to test a simple method for converting accurate nonrelativistic predictions of atomic properties into accurate relativistic predictions with a minimum of additional computational effort. The method connects smoothly the exact nonrelativistic LS-coupling results appropriate at small Z with the relativistic jj-coupling results appropriate at large Z. For the processes stated in the title, the method appears to offer a significant improvement in accuracy over relativistic Hartree-Fock or random-phase- approximation calculations, particularly in the low and intermediate range of nuclear charge. For large Z, the present results agree well with the relativistic random-phase approximation. © …

Kepone® Residues In Chesapeake Bay Biota, M. E. Bender, R. J. Huggett, W. J. Hargis Jr.

VIMS Books and Book Chapters

Oysters from the James displayed variations in Kepone residue levels related to water temperature and their spawning cycle. Oyster depuralion rates were related to temperature. In summer the "biological half. life" of Kepone in oysters was about one week, while during the winter about 40 days were required for residue levels to decline by 50 per cent. Residues in blue crabs varied as a function of sex, males having considerably higher residues than females. Fin fish levels from the James varied greatly, with residue levels being dependent on species and length of residence for migratory fishes .. Average Kepone residues …

On The Existence Of Good Markov Strategies, Theodore P. Hill Jan 1979

On The Existence Of Good Markov Strategies, Theodore P. Hill

Research Scholars in Residence

In contrast to the known fact that there are gambling problems based on a finite state space for which no stationary family of strategies is at all good, in every such problem there always exist ε-optimal Markov families (in which the strategy depends only on the current state and time) and also ε-optimal tracking families (in which the strategy depends only on the current state and the number of times that state has been previously visited). More generally, this result holds for all finite state gambling problems with a payoff which is shift and permutation invariant.

Chemistry Department: Faculty Publications

Crystallographic analyses of x-ray and neutron diffraction data have provided a definitive structural representation of {HRh[P(O-i-C3H7)3]2}2 and [HRh[P(OCH3)3]2}3. These polynuclear hydrides are generated from square planar H2Rh[P(OR)3]2 units by edge (hydrogen atom) sharing and by vertex (hydrogen atom) sharing to form the dimeric and trimeric structures, respectively. The square-planar units are held together through four-center and three-center two-electron Rh-H-Rh bonds in the dimer and trimer, respectively. The dimer and trimer molecules each add one molecule of hydrogen to …
