Copper(I)‒Pyrazolate Complexes As Solid-State Phosphors: Deep- Blue Emission Through A Remote Steric Effect, Yuichiro Watanabe, Benjamin M. Washer, Matthias Zeller, Sergei Savikhin, Lyudmila V. Slipchenko, Alexander Wei

Department of Chemistry Faculty Publications

We describe a novel manifestation of rigidochromic behavior in a series of tetranuclear Cu(I)–pyrazolate (Cu4pz4) macrocycles, with implications for solid-state luminescence at deep-blue wavelengths (<460 nm). The Cu4pz4 emissions are remarkably sensitive to structural effects far from the luminescent core: when 3,5-di-tert-butylpyrazoles are used as bridging ligands, adding a C4 substituent can induce a blue shift of more than 100 nm. X-ray crystal and computational analyses reveal that C4 units influence the conformational behavior of adjacent tert-butyl groups, with a subsequent impact on the global conformation of the Cu4pz4 complex. Emissions are mediated primarily through a cluster-centered triplet (3CC) state; compression of the Cu4 cluster into a nearly close-packed geometry prevents the reorganization of its excited-state structure and preserves the 3CC energy at a high level. The remote steric effect may thus offer alternative strategies toward the design of phosphors with rigid excited-state geometries.

A Critical Review Of Bioaccumulation And Biotransformation Of Organic Chemicals In Birds, Dave T. F. Kuo, Barnett A. Rattner, Sarah C. Marteinson, Robert Letcher, Kim J. Fernie, Gabriele Treu, Markus Deutsch, Mark S. Johnson, Sandrine Deglin, Michelle Embry

United States Geological Survey: Staff Publications

A literature review of bioaccumulation and biotransformation of organic chemicals in birds was undertaken, aiming to support scoping and prioritization of future research. The objectives were to characterize available bioaccumulation/ biotransformation data, identify knowledge gaps, determine how extant data can be used, and explore the strategy and steps forward. An intermediate approach balanced between expediency and rigor was taken given the vastness of the literature. Following a critical review of >500 peer-reviewed studies, >25,000 data entries and 2 million information bytes were compiled on >700 organic compounds for ~ 320 wild species and 60 domestic breeds of birds. These data …

Distributed Machine Learning Algorithms For Resource-Constrained Heterogeneous Internet-Of-Things Environments, Ahmed Imteaj May 2022

Distributed Machine Learning Algorithms For Resource-Constrained Heterogeneous Internet-Of-Things Environments, Ahmed Imteaj

FIU Electronic Theses and Dissertations

With the improvement of network infrastructures and advancement of IoT technologies, now it is desirable to perform computation at the edges, rather than sharing data with a central fusion center, which is privacy-intrusive. Both conventional (centralized) and distributed machine learning (ML) algorithms fail to address underlying challenges related to users’ privacy or capturing global knowledge of the whole network. To properly handle such challenges, a recently invented distributed ML technique, called Federated Learning was invented that shows us a pathway to construct a global model without exposing any user’s private data through on-device model training utilizing edge resources. However, FL …

Biology, Chemistry, and Environmental Sciences Faculty Articles and Research

Openly shared low-cost electronic hardware applications, known as open electronics, have sparked a new open-source movement, with much untapped potential to advance scientific research. Initially designed to appeal to electronic hobbyists, open electronics have formed a global “maker” community and are increasingly used in science and industry. In this perspective article, we review the current costs and benefits of open electronics for use in scientific research ranging from the experimental to the theoretical sciences. We discuss how user-made electronic applications can help (I) individual researchers, by increasing the customization, efficiency, and scalability of experiments, while improving data quantity and quality; …

Analysis Of Principles Of Development Of Key Technologies, Yungang Bao May 2022

Analysis Of Principles Of Development Of Key Technologies, Yungang Bao

Bulletin of Chinese Academy of Sciences (Chinese Version)

How to development key technologies requires understanding the principles of technology evolution. This study proposes that the development process of key technologies follows the Metcalf's Law. Furthermore, this paper presents two principles of the development of key technologies from different angles. Finally, several suggestions are raised.

Bulletin of Chinese Academy of Sciences (Chinese Version)

The research infrastructure is the basic and strategic platform of scientific and technological innovation. In the last decade, China's research infrastructure has achieved leapfrog development in the level of observation, manufacturing, management, data acquisition, data sharing and utilization, which supports China's scientific and technological innovation activities at a higher level. Looking into the future, the scientific research paradigm is transforming. The network, data, and computing platform will not only support the development of major science and technology infrastructure and field stations in larger, more accurate, and more advanced approach, but also contribute to the transformation of scientific research paradigm. It …

Deep-Learning-Incorporated Augmented Reality Application For Engineering Lab Training, John Estrada, Sidike Paheding, Xiaoli Yang, Quamar Niyaz

Michigan Tech Publications

Deep learning (DL) algorithms have achieved significantly high performance in object detection tasks. At the same time, augmented reality (AR) techniques are transforming the ways that we work and connect with people. With the increasing popularity of online and hybrid learning, we propose a new framework for improving students’ learning experiences with electrical engineering lab equipment by incorporating the abovementioned technologies. The DL powered automatic object detection component integrated into the AR application is designed to recognize equipment such as multimeter, oscilloscope, wave generator, and power supply. A deep neural network model, namely MobileNet-SSD v2, is implemented for equipment detection …
