The Foundations Of Mathematics And The Mathematics Curriculum, Bayard Baylis Apr 1977

The Foundations Of Mathematics And The Mathematics Curriculum, Bayard Baylis

ACMS Conference Proceedings 1977

In teaching the foundations of mathematics within the framework of a Christian college, and particularly that of a Christian liberal arts college, there are two groups of students which must be served. The first consisted of the non-mathematics majors—those non-scientifically oriented “general anything” students who, as a catalog might put it, are to receive “an introduction to and an appreciation of the history, foundations, culture and applications of mathematics.” The second group consists of the mathematics majors, and the few science majors who have not been frightened away by the calculus. The gulf between these two groups is sufficiently large, …

Measurement Of The Xenon Σ3/21/2 Branching Ratio Within The Xe 5s5p66p(1P1) Resonance, Peter C. Kemeny, James A. R. Samson, Anthony F. Starace Apr 1977

Measurement Of The Xenon Σ3/2:Σ1/2 Branching Ratio Within The Xe 5s5p66p(1P1) Resonance, Peter C. Kemeny, James A. R. Samson, Anthony F. Starace

Anthony F. Starace Publications

Photoionization of the 5p6 shell in xenon leaves the ion in either the 5p5(2P3/2) or np5(2P1/2) state. Measurements of the 2P3/2 : 2P1/2 branching ratio are reported within the Xe 5s5p66p(1P1) resonance and fitted to a new theoretical expression. The maximum value of the ratio as determined by a two-parameter fit of theory to experiment is 8.8 ± 0.5 within the resonance, almost six times the nearly constant value of 1.55 found outside any resonance.

Chemistry and Chemical Biology ETDs

The binuclear tartrate-bridged complexes [Cr 2 (tartH) 2 (L)2 ] and Na [ Cr2 (tart) (tartH) (L)2]("tart" = C4H2O64-, "tartH" = C4H3O63- and "L"= 1,10-phenanthroline or 2,2'-bipyridyl) have been synthesized where each complex contains either two optically active or two meso bridging ligands. A discussion of the number of isomers and symmetries of these complexes is presented, as well as a complete description of the syntheses of the complexes and their sodium salts.

Using A Prediction Model In Forecasting Appeals, Paul A. Rake Apr 1977

Using A Prediction Model In Forecasting Appeals, Paul A. Rake

IUSTITIA

Following the 1972 reorganization of the Indiana Court of Appeals into three panels serving defined geographical districts, the Court soon found itself floundering with too many unevenly distributed cases. Lacking a sufficient base of statistical data from which to formulate a plan to cope with the problem, various proposals, including redistricting the court, adding more judges, and developing a more sophisticated staff research, could not be measured for effectiveness or advisability.

In response to these problems, the Court developed a project to deal with the future caseload by constructing a regression model to predict appeals. This model generated estimates of …

Theory And Applications Of An Atoms In Molecules Approach To The Xα -Scf Method, J. Tylicki, R.J. Hood, Gordon A. Gallup, C.J. Eckhardt

Gordon Gallup Publications

We have studied the Xα -SCF problem with an atoms in molecules approach. LCAO-molecular orbitals are used and the molecular charge and exchange densities are built up from atomic contributions. We have applied our method to CH3F with subsequent comparison to ab initio calculations. The Xα -SCF dipole moment of CH3F is 1.76 D compared with an experimental value of 1.79 D. We also give calculations of TCNQ and TTF with comparisons to recent Xα calculations using the overlapping sphere modification of a muffin-tin potential. Quadrupole moments for TCNQ and TTF have also been determined. The …

The Intergovernmental Balancing Act: State-Federal Interests In Coastal Zone Management, Timothy M. Alexander Apr 1977

The Intergovernmental Balancing Act: State-Federal Interests In Coastal Zone Management, Timothy M. Alexander

Marine Affairs Theses and Major Papers

The central notion of intergovernmental and inter-interest balancing suggested by the title of this paper reflects a distinctly American theme derived from our pluralistic, competing, compromissory and somewhat optimistic governmental values and experience. The Coastal Zone Management Act (hereafter CZMA or the Act) and the success of its implementation rests firmly on this balancing premise. The CZMA's assumptions, processes and implicit or stated objectives involve reliance on a governmental system that achieves effective and equitable intergovernmental balance.Yet, as I think this investigation will show, there are no ready-made answers as to how balance is to be achieved through the Act--let …

Surface Area Measurements And Seasonal Variation Of Selected New Mexico Lakes, Mike Edwin White Apr 1977

Surface Area Measurements And Seasonal Variation Of Selected New Mexico Lakes, Mike Edwin White

Geography ETDs

This research compares the ability of various areal measuring techniques to accurately measure reservoir surface area from Landsat imagery. Water volume and surface area data obtained from reservoir management agencies for six New Mexico reservoirs were used as test data. Acreage estimates obtained from a dot grid, an electronic planimeter, a 32-level color density slicer and a 16-level black and white density slicer, were compared to the test data. Surface area measurements were taken from Landsat infrared images by these devices at scales of 1:1,000,000, 1:500,000 and 1:250,000. The acreage estimates were obtained for four seasons during 1973. The results …

Alkali Basalt-Trachyte Suite And Volcanism, Northern Part Of The Mount Taylor Volcanic Field, New Mexico, L. S. Crumpler

Earth and Planetary Sciences ETDs

This report is the result of detailed mapping of a part of the northern Mount Taylor volcanic field of west-central New Mexico. More than 100 volcanic vents were mapped, including 8 maars, 5 pit craters, and 15 distinct trachyte flow domes. Three successive periods of volcanism were identified: (1) Tapia stage (pre-Mount Taylor, 3.26± .20 m.y.): an alkali basalt-trachyte suite, identified here for the first time on the North American continent; includes basanitoid, hawaiite, mugearite, benmorite and trachyte. Of these, the trachyte is the most voluminous (about 3 km3), the basanitoid and hawaiite (''early basalt") the least …

Mössbauer Study Of Spin Alignment In Substituted Lithium Ferrites, C. R. Abeledo, Richard B. Frankel

Physics

To explain the decrease of magnetic moment in zinc substituted lithium ferrites Dionne has proposed a model which includes canting of the B sublattice moments as zinc is substituted in the A sublattice. Mössbauer spectroscopy in external magnetic fields is applied to investigate the existence of canting in (Li0,5Fe0, 5)1-xZnxFe2O4 with x = 0 and x = 0.3. The samples used were either polycrystalline powders or circular disks cut from pressed blocks and lapped down to a thickness of 0.1 mm. In the x = 0 …

An Epornitic Of Avian Cholera In Waterfowl And Common Crows In Phelps County, Nebraska, In The Spring, 1975, Joseph Zinkl, Norm Dey, Joseph Hyland, James Hurt, Kenneth Heddleston

Nebraska Game and Parks Commission: Staff Research Publications

In the spring of 1975, many species of waterfowl and common crows (Corvus brachyrhynchos) were found dead in Phelps County, Nebraska. About 25,000 waterfowl and at least 3,000 crows died in the epornitic. Few waterfowl were seen dying, but the crows experienced a chronic illness during which they became debilitated and were lethargic and dyspneic. Gross and microscopic lesions in the waterfowl were typical for acute avian cholera. The crows had dank, firm areas within the lungs, a loosely adhered yellow fibrous material in the pericardial sac and air sacs and, occasionally, liver abscesses. Microscopically, focal punulent pneumonia …

West Africa (East Central Atlantic) As A Regional Base For Fisheries Management, Conservation And Research: And Pollution Control, Vincent F. Adebolu

Marine Affairs Theses and Major Papers

About two decades ago when the First Law of the Sea Conference was underway, little attention was paid to ocean management. By then all of the ocean space apart from narrow bands of coastal waters was broadly recognized as the High Seas which is open to use by all countries. But despite this concept of free open use, only the major maritime powers were actually interested in maximizing the freedom of the seas principle. During this period there were only ninety independent coastal and landlocked states.

Rhode Island Coastal Zone Management And Local Government Organizational Structure: An Analysis Of Selected Community Governments, Methods, And Capabilities, Robert F. Greene

Marine Affairs Theses and Major Papers

It is the purpose of this discussion to examine the organizational structure, and the governmental processes selected Rhode Island communities utilize to carry out their particular role as participants in the management of the coastal resources within their political boundaries. Insofar as practicable, the major sources of information for this research are the communities themselves--their elected and appointed officials, and the documentary material the Towns generate and use as they carry out their management functions.

A Study Of The Second And Third Committees Of The Third United Nations Conference On The Law Of The Sea, James C. Bridgman

Marine Affairs Theses and Major Papers

The Third United Nations Conference on the Law of the Sea was divided along lines established for the preparitory Conference. The plenary consisted of all delegates of all delegations and was generally used to make formal what had already been negotiated in closed sessions. In the fifth session, it took on a new function as a forum for debating in closed session proposed articles on dispute settlement. In the future, it will look at drafts of the preamble and final clauses to the Convention. Each of three primary committees was empowered with specific issues to consider, again stemming from the …

A Proposal For Renewable Resource Management In Long Island Sound, Oliver T. Edstrom Apr 1977

A Proposal For Renewable Resource Management In Long Island Sound, Oliver T. Edstrom

Marine Affairs Theses and Major Papers

In the United States, prior to Public Law 94-265, the Fishery Conservation and Management Act of 1976, regulation of the harvest of oceanic fishery stocks was complicated by the principles of common property resource laws founded by Grotius' dissertation on freedom of the seas. Public Law 94-265 vests ownership in the right to manage stock of fish within 200 miles of the United States' coast to the United States as trustee of that fishery resource. Within the framework of extended jurisdiction of fishery management, individual states in the republic keep and maintain control of fishery resources. within their respective territories.

The Limnetic Zooplankton Community Of Boulder Basin, Lake Mead In Relation To The Metalimnetic Oxygen Minimum, Thomas A. Burke Apr 1977

The Limnetic Zooplankton Community Of Boulder Basin, Lake Mead In Relation To The Metalimnetic Oxygen Minimum, Thomas A. Burke

Publications (WR)

The limnetic zooplankton community of Boulder Basin, Lake Mead, was examined to determine the role of this community in the development of a metalimnetic oxygen minimum which regularly occurs in the lake. Analysis of the community from May 1975 to April 1976 revealed that zooplankton maintain high populations within the metalimnion during summer stratification. The species composition of the community changes noticeably during the summer, but due to advanced stages excysting from resting forms, a complete assemblage of individuals are found throughout the 74 day period studied. Thermal stratification was weak, covering a 30 meter metalimnion. Eddy currents powered by …
