Superconcentrators, Nicholas Pippenger Jan 1977

Superconcentrators, Nicholas Pippenger

All HMC Faculty Publications and Research

An $n$-superconcentrator is an acyclic directed graph with $n$ inputs and $n$ outputs for which, for every $r \leqq n$, every set of $r$ inputs, and every set of $r$ outputs, there exists an $r$-flow (a set of $r$ vertex-disjoint directed paths) from the given inputs to the given outputs. We show that there exist $n$-superconcentrators with $39n + O(\log n)$ (in fact, at most $40n$) edges, depth $O(\log n)$, and maximum degree (in-degree plus out-degree) 16.

Some Sufficient Conditions For The Jacobson Radical Of A Commutative Ring With Identity To Contain A Prime Ideal, Melvin Henriksen Jan 1977

Some Sufficient Conditions For The Jacobson Radical Of A Commutative Ring With Identity To Contain A Prime Ideal, Melvin Henriksen

All HMC Faculty Publications and Research

Throughout, the word "ring" will abbreviate the phrase "commutative ring with identity element 1" unless the contrary is stated explicitly. An ideal I of a ring R is called pseudoprime if ab = 0 implies a or b is in I. This term was introduced by C. Kohls and L. Gillman who observed that if I contains a prime ideal, then I is pseudoprime, but, in general, the converse need not hold. In [9 p. 233], M. Larsen, W. Lewis, and R. Shores ask if whenever the Jacobson radical J(R) of an arithmetical ring is pseudoprime, it follows that J(R) …

Embryopathic Effects Of Waterborne And Sediment-Accumulated Cadmium, Mercury And Zinc On Reproduction And Survival Of Fish And Amphibian Populations In Kentucky, Wesley J. Birge, Jeffrey A. Black, Albert G. Westerman, Paul C. Francis, Jarvis E. Hudson Jan 1977

Hudson

KWRRI Research Reports

Fish and amphibian egg cultures were used to determine the embryopathic effects of cadmium, mercury, and zinc released from natural and metal-enriched sediments, and to develop egg culture bioassay procedures suitable for monitoring bottom sediments for hazardous contaminants. Eggs of the narrow-mouthed toad (Gastrophryne carolinensis), goldfish (Carassius auratus), and rainbow trout (Salmo gairdnei) were cultured in contaminant-free water added to natural and metal-enriched sediments. Exposure was initiated after fertilization (toad, goldfish) or at 10 days prehatching (trout) and maintained continuously through 4-10 days posthatching. Sediments were enriched with 0.1-100 ppm cadmium and mercury and …

Proton Shift Additivity And Substituent Interaction Parameters, Donald W. Beistel, Gary Chappell, W. Daniel Edwards Jan 1977

Proton Shift Additivity And Substituent Interaction Parameters, Donald W. Beistel, Gary Chappell, W. Daniel Edwards

Chemistry Faculty Research & Creative Works

The 4-substituted acetophenone family is characterized and its shifts are correlated with those of nine families of 1, 4-disubstituted benzenes reported previously. Then a simple mathematical model is derived to account for the proton magnetic resonance shifts within families of 1, 4-disubstituted benzenes. The model suggests that the substituents interact by σ-bond polarization. The polarization model rationalizes shift additivity and is consistent with the qualitative relationship between the number of valence electrons on a substituent and its capacity to induce shifts. © 1977, American Chemical Society. Reliability Growth Apportionment, James K. Byers Jan 1977

Reliability Growth Apportionment, James K. Byers

Computer Science Faculty Research & Creative Works

A method is presented for apportioning reliability growth to the subsystems that make up a system in order to achieve the required reliability at least cost. Reliability growth apportionment is handled as an s-expected cost minimization problem subject to the constraint of meeting a system reliability requirement. The problem is formulated in terms of Duane's reliability growth model and is solved using geometric programming. The method can be useful in the early stages of system design to determine subsystem reliability growth that will allow a system reliability requirement to be met, and in the latter stages of system design when …

The Liquid Phase Oxidation Of 1,3-Pentadiene, Carl B. Reaves

Retrospective Theses and Dissertations

The liquid phase autoxidation of 1,3-pentadiene to 2,4-pentadienoic acid utilizing gaseous oxygen at atmospheric pressure was investigated as a possible route for direct utilization of piperylene obtained during the cracking of naptha to ethylene. Catalyst system consisting of cobalt, manganese, and iron salts promoted by sodium, potassium and hydrogen bromides, were used under a variety of condition of catalyst concentration, temperature, oxygen flow and piperylene purity. Under all conditions studied, a large number of oxidation products were formed. Maximum yields of 2,4-pentadienoic acid were obtained using a cobalt acetate bromide catalyst at 85°C.

Eclipsing Systems In Star Structures. Iii. Early-Type Contact System Bh Centauri, Kam-Ching Leung, Donald P. Schneider

Department of Physics and Astronomy: Faculty Publications

Close to 1000 photoelectric observations of BH Cen in the yellow, blue, and ultraviolet regions were analyzed. The period found was 0.791616 days. The depths of minima were about equal, and were more than 1 magnitude! A photometric solution was derived with the Wilson and Devinney model. The binary is an overcontact system with primary and secondary masses equal to 10 M?. Based on its membership in IC 2944 and the size of the primary radius, BH Cen may be another example of a zero-age contact system.

Effects Of Stream Channel Improvements On Downstream Floods, Yang H. Huang, Ronald K. Gaynor Jan 1977

Effects Of Stream Channel Improvements On Downstream Floods, Yang H. Huang, Ronald K. Gaynor

KWRRI Research Reports

This report presents a self-calibrating watershed model for predicting the effect of channel improvements on downstream floods. The model is called MOPSET because it is a modified version of OPSET developed several years ago at the University of Kentucky. OPSET is a computerized procedure for determining an optimum set of parameter values by matching synthesized flows with recorded flows. Major modifications include the replacement of the modified Muskingum method of channel routing by a kinematic finite difference method, the division of the watershed into a number of segments, and the inclusion of a storage routing procedure to take care of …

The Liquid Phase Conversion Of Carbon Dioxide To Hydrocarbons Over Ruthenium Catalyst Systems, Mohammad M. Akbarnejad Jan 1977

The Liquid Phase Conversion Of Carbon Dioxide To Hydrocarbons Over Ruthenium Catalyst Systems, Mohammad M. Akbarnejad

Retrospective Theses and Dissertations

The purpose of this research project was to evaluate the feasibility of producing hydrocarbons by liquid phase hydrogenation of carbon dioxide. Initial studies dealt with the evaluation of ruthenium (III) chloride over a wide range of reaction conditions. High conversions were observed and were found to vary with catalyst concentration, temperature and time. Conversion of carbon dioxide reached 73% after twenty-four hours at a catalyst concentration of 0.75g/mole of CO2 feed. The hydrogen to carbon dioxide ratio was found to have a significant effect on product distribution and amount of methane produced. For example, low ratios of H2/CO2 gave large …

Existence Of The Dielectric Constant In Rigid-Dipole Fluids: The Functional-Derivative Approach, John D. Ramshaw Jan 1977

Existence Of The Dielectric Constant In Rigid-Dipole Fluids: The Functional-Derivative Approach, John D. Ramshaw

Physics Faculty Publications and Presentations

In a previous article [J. Chem. Phys. 57, 2684 (1972)] sufficient conditions were established for the existence of the dielectric constant ɛ in rigid-dipole fluids. One of these conditions was an unrealistic restriction on the angular dependence of the direct correlation function c (12) at short range. Here it is shown that this restriction can be removed without altering the previous conclusions. Consequently, ɛ rigorously exists if c (12) depends only upon relative positions and orientations of molecules 1 and 2, and becomes asymptotic to -φd(12)/kT at long range, where φd(12) is the dipole-dipole potential. The development is based upon …

Final-State Effects In Carbon Auger Spectra Of Transition-Metal Carbides, M. A. Smith, L. L. Levenson Jan 1977

Final-State Effects In Carbon Auger Spectra Of Transition-Metal Carbides, M. A. Smith, L. L. Levenson

Physics Faculty Research & Creative Works

The carbon Auger spectra of TiC, VC, and Cr3C2 are measured with a resolution of 1.2 eV. Background subtraction is performed, and a deconvolution technique is used to remove energy-dependent broadening from the spectra. An analysis of the data in terms of density-of-states calculations, x-ray emission work, and x-ray photoelectron data shows that final-state effects dominate the Auger spectra. For all of the carbides three peaks are identified as spectral terms resulting directly from final-state hole interactions. Other peaks appearing in the Auger spectra can be identified without final-state considerations. © 1977 The American Physical Society.

Reports

During the last 100 years four major types of dredging have impacted the bay: channel deepening, maintenance dredging, shell dredging, and dredging for landfill construction. These landfills have resulted in the loss of 44% of the original marine wetlands bordering Tampa Bay. Recent environmental concerns have halted landfill dredging and severely restricted maintenance dredging.

Volcanology And Geochemistry Of The South Flank Of Mount Baker, Cascade Range, Washington, Douglas Mckeever Jan 1977

Volcanology And Geochemistry Of The South Flank Of Mount Baker, Cascade Range, Washington, Douglas Mckeever

WWU Graduate School Collection

Major element chemical analysis of 97 rocks from the south side of Mount Baker was performed by energy dispersive x-ray fluorescence. Conclusions based on chemistry are:

1) Variation diagrams based on a large number of samples show that variation is not continuous nor, in general, smooth. Rocks from two major stratigraphic positions exhibit compositional coherency within each group and are interpreted as eruptive groups which were extruded over time intervals which were short compared to the lifetime of the volcanic center. The older of the two groups is called the Park Butte phase, and the younger is the Koma Kulshan …

The Rainbow Trout In The North Platte Valley, Rod Van Velson Jan 1977

The Rainbow Trout In The North Platte Valley, Rod Van Velson

Nebraska Game and Parks Commission: Publications

LAKE McCONAUGHY is the only Great Plains reservoir that supports a self-sustaining rainbow trout population. This unique rainbow population lives during the spring, summer and fall in Lake McConaughy and spawns during the winter in tributary streams of the North Platte River in the Scottsbluff area. The Game and Parks Commission was concerned because not enough information was available to properly manage the rainbow trout population under increased fishing pressure. During the mid-1960's a study was initiated to collect information and prepare a rainbow trout management plan for the upper North Platte River drainage. This publication is part of that …

The Future Of Excess Navy Lands: A Case Study Of The Quonset Point-Davisville, Rhode Island Coastal Fringe, Thomas E. Bigford

Marine Affairs Theses and Major Papers

With spiraling costs in government, the American taxpayer and the Office of Management and Budget have encountered continuing problems in spending. One outcome of such economic hardships, emphasized in this period of peacetime, has been significant budgetary cutbacks in the Department of Defense. Translated through the political heirarchy, these cuts eventually resulted in the closing of many military bases. Regardless of the geographical location, each excessed base posed problems to the respective area and state. Problems arose concerning immediate socio-economic hardships in the region, changes in ownership of the land, and most obviously, future uses of the property. This subject is …

Distortion In Map Projections: Its Effect On The Interpretation Of Maritime Boundaries And Related Activities, Austin H. Gedney Iii

Marine Affairs Theses and Major Papers

Distortion inherent in map projections can effect the delimitation of maritime boundaries. Thirty-nine maps of three study areas representative of the world were drawn, and the envelope and median line offshore boundaries were constructed on them. Every country's enclosed boundary area was measure in each of the four categories of distortion; equivalency, conformality, equidistance and constant bearing. The result revealed a number of projections that indicate a wide range of usefulness depending on the degree of deformation and preservation of properties for a particular study area.
