Biology Of The Porcupine (Erethizon Dorsatum) In Northwestern South Dakota, Judith Johnson

The summer home ranges, food habits, cover preferences, population dynamics, metabolic rates, growth rates, and taxonomic characteristics were determined for porcupines (Erethizon dorsatum) in northwestern South Dakota. The summer home ranges were 158.2 ha for adult females, 90.4 ha for juveniles, and 57.9 ha for adult males. The population was 34 percent adult males, 16 percent juvenile males, 34 percent adult females, and 15 percent juvenile females. The preferred daytime cover choice was silver buffaloberry (Shepherdia argentea), followed by snowberry (Symphoricarpos occidentalis), earth dens, forbs, and low brush. Factors Affecting Waterfowl Brood Use Of Stock Ponds In South Dakota, Gene D. Mack

A July waterfowl brood survey was conducted from 1973 to 1976 on stock ponds located within four physiographic strata in South Dakota. Information was collected on weather, stock pond characteristics, land use and the condition of other wetlands located within the quarter section (64.8 ha) study plots. Multiple regression and multiple discriminant analyses were sued to determine the importance of these variables in influencing brood use of stock ponds. Vegetation type, distribution of emergent vegetation and pond size were important in determining if broods of any particular species utilized a pond or not. N2 fixation rates for several Virginia salt marshes were determined using in situ acetylene-reduction assays. A control and a chronically polluted oil marsh of the mesohaline Mobjack Bay area were sampled over a 1975-76 annual cycle. N2 fixation occurred in all transects which extended from upper mudflat to the Spartina patens zone. An isolated blue-green algal mat exhibited some of the highest N2 fixation rates. Intertidal sediment N2 fixation was patchy, both spatially and seasonally. However average rates (91.45 μg N/m2/h) compared to the estimated N requirement of the graminoid vegetation indicated a significant contribution to the N budget. Vegetation …

Vedder Mountain lies in Washington state and British Columbia on the western flank of the North Cascades. Metamorphic rocks, which comprise most of the western half of the mountain, can be divided into two separate and distinct units. The southern unit is composed of foliated and non-foliated hornblende-plagioclase gabbro with minor serpentinite and pyroxenite. Most of the gabbroic rocks are sheared and altered and exhibit a lower greenschist facies metamorphism overprinted by a subsequent prehnite-pumpellyite facies metamorphism. Whole-rock chemical analyses of the gabbros plot in and near the fields defined by oceanic gabbro (Engel and Fisher, 1969; Miyashiro et al, …
