The Extendability And Uniqueness Of Solutions Of Ordinary Differential Equations, Stephen R. Bernfeld Jan 1976

The Extendability And Uniqueness Of Solutions Of Ordinary Differential Equations, Stephen R. Bernfeld

Mathematics Technical Papers

In a recent paper [1] the author obtained results on the extendability of solutions of perturbed differential equations. The question of the extendability of solutions of differential equations is a fundamental and important property since questions of stability and boundedness require extendability. In this paper we continue our study of extendability of perturbed scalar differential equations. Our somewhat surprising results also extend to the question of uniqueness of the zero solution of perturbed equations satisfying an Osgood condition [4] (See also [2] for recent results on the uniqueness of perturbed systems.) Examples are provided to demonstrate the strength of our …

H I In Early-Type Galaxies. Ii. Mass Loss And Galactic Winds, S. M. Faber, J. S. Gallagher

Department of Physics and Astronomy: Faculty Publications

Implications of observed upper limits to the neutral hydrogen content of E and SO galaxies from Paper I are discussed. If gas shed by dying stars is completely retained by these galaxies and exists as H I, these upper limits will be exceeded in only 109 yr for E's and SO's and in only 2 x 108 yr for NGC 4472. Evidently, gas either is hidden in some undetectable form or is removed from the interstellar medium completely.

My objective is to use the video-tape as another medium -- along with overhead projector, textbooks, guides of apprenticeship, pictures, lab equipment and suggestions from the programs and new trends in physics teaching -- being used to supplement our efforts in trying to reach more and more of our students The use of audiovisual media, and generally speaking the use of technology in education, can be constructive or destructive, can e very powerful in developing "human beings" or "robots", can increase the rate of apprenticeship, or can produce an educational catastrophe. However, it will heavily depend on the the professor, …

Topological Properties Of The Real Numbers Object In A Topos, Lawrence Stout Jan 1976

Topological Properties Of The Real Numbers Object In A Topos, Lawrence Stout

Scholarship

In his presentation at the categories Session at Oberwolfach in 1973, Tierney defined the continuous reals for a topos with a natural numbers object (he called them Dedekind reals). Mulvey studied the algebraic properties of the object of continuous reals and proved that the construction gave the sheaf of germs of continuous functions from X to R in the spatial topos Sh( X). This paper presents the results of the study of the topological properties of the continuous reals with an emphasis on similarities with classical mathematics and applications to familiar concepts rephrased in topos terms.

An Evaluation Of The Effects Of Dredging Within The Arkansas River Navigation System, Volume Iv - The Effects Upon The Benthic Associations, Louise Russert Kraemer

Technical Reports

The huge and increasing volume of dredged materials being moved in and from the bottoms of waterways of the U.S. is probably well known to the reader. Lee and Plumb (1974) distinguish between the 2 forms of dredging: (1) mining the bottom sediments (as in shell dredging), and (2) developing and maintaining navigable waterways. They indicate some 380,000,000 cubic yards are dredged annually in this country; maintenance dredging accounting for about 80,000,000 cy, and new construction for about 300,000,000 cy.* These figures (based on 5 yr. averages) do not include dredging by private companies. Smith (1975) comments: "With federal dredging …

Nuclear Spin Relaxation By Intramolecular Interactions In Gases Of Homonuclear Diatomic Molecules, Myer Bloom, Peter A. Beckmann, B C. Sanctuary Jan 1976

Nuclear Spin Relaxation By Intramolecular Interactions In Gases Of Homonuclear Diatomic Molecules, Myer Bloom, Peter A. Beckmann, B C. Sanctuary

Physics Faculty Research and Scholarship

The differential equations which describe the relaxation of macroscopic observables associated with nuclear spins in homonuclear diatomic molecules are derived using an expansion of the nuclear spin density matrix in terms of irreducible tensors. It is shown, using an intramolecular quadrupole mechanism, that the only difference between nuclear spin relaxation of the ortho- and para-species arises from the rotational states being restricted to odd and even values. This difference is vanishingly small at high temperatures so that the relaxation equations for nuclear magnetization become identical for both species. A previous paper predicting a difference even at high temperatures is …

Kinetics And Stoichiometry Of The Aquation Reaction Of Pentaaquomonobromomethylchromium (Iii) Perchlorate, Janice Imada Byington Jan 1976

Kinetics And Stoichiometry Of The Aquation Reaction Of Pentaaquomonobromomethylchromium (Iii) Perchlorate, Janice Imada Byington

University of the Pacific Theses and Dissertations

The purpose of this thesis was to determine the kinetics and stoichiometry for the aquation of the pentaaquomonobromonmethylchromium(III) complex. The complex was prepared by the reduction of dibromomethane by chromium(II). The products of aquation, in the absence of oxygen, were found to be hexaaquachromium(III), methanol, and bromide. The balanced net ionic reaction can be written: 2H2O + (H2O)5CrCH2Br2+ → (H2O)6Cr3+ + CH3OH + Br-

Group Of Point Transformations Of Time Dependent Harmonic Oscillators, Jose Ricardo Bernal Jan 1976

Group Of Point Transformations Of Time Dependent Harmonic Oscillators, Jose Ricardo Bernal

University of the Pacific Theses and Dissertations

In general, a physical system has invariant quantities which are very often related to its symmetry and to the invariance of the equation that describe it. A detailed study of the invariance property of the differential equation will be helpful in understanding this relation.

The work is concerned with a preliminary investigation of the Lie-group which leaves invariant the Newtonian and Lagrangian equation of motion for a one-dimensional harmonic oscillator. A brief review of Ehrenfest's adiabatic principle and the later treatments on exact and adiabatic invariants will be presented.

Distribution And Abundance Of Soft-Sediment Intertidal Polychaetes, Hassan Muftah Howege Jan 1976

Distribution And Abundance Of Soft-Sediment Intertidal Polychaetes, Hassan Muftah Howege

University of the Pacific Theses and Dissertations

Polychaetes are important components of the intertidal sandflat community in Lawson’s Flat, Dillon Beach, California. Little is known about the factors that control the relative abundance of these species. In view of the extensive evidence of the importance of interactions between component species in intertidal communities it is of interest to obtain information that would facilitate future experimental work of such interactions. This study documents seasonal changes in the abundance of the polychaete component of the intertidal community. Attention is directed at possible factors that might affect seasonal changes in distribution. A major finding is that certain herbivorous polychaetes exhibit …

Some Applications Of Lie Transformation Groups To Classical Hamiltonian Dynamics, Donald Robert Peterson Jan 1976

Some Applications Of Lie Transformation Groups To Classical Hamiltonian Dynamics, Donald Robert Peterson

University of the Pacific Theses and Dissertations

Recent work has established that a group theoretical viewpoint of completely integrable dynamical systems with N degrees of freedom yields an algorithm that provides new information concerning the symmetry transformation group structure of this class of dynamical systems. The work presented here rests heavily on the results presented in reference and it is recommended that the reader consult this reference for a more rigorous discussion of the results given in this thesis.

Salt Encroachment : The 1974 Saltland Survey, C V. Malcolm, R. C. Stoneman Jan 1976

Salt Encroachment : The 1974 Saltland Survey, C V. Malcolm, R. C. Stoneman

Journal of the Department of Agriculture, Western Australia, Series 4

It has long been recognised that the clearing of land for agriculture in the south western Australia is followed by the development of saline soils and streams.

In 1955 and again in 1962, in conjunction with the annual statistical returns, farmers in Western Australia were asked to supply estimates of salt-affected land on their properties.

In 1974 a further survey was conducted, in co-operation with the Australian Bureau of Statistics, using questions covering only the basic information. As the information is again available on a Shire basis a direct comparison can be made with the 1962 survey except for some …

Sealing Farm Dams, I A F Laing, R. G. Pepper

Journal of the Department of Agriculture, Western Australia, Series 4

Research over the past 10 years has shown that it is technically possible to seal many leaking farm dams. In some situations a cheap chemical treatment is effective but in most cases it is cheaper to construct a replacement dam.

This article reviews the situation in western Australia and outlines some of the methods used for sealing dams.

Comparison Of Economic Returns From Grain Crops, H M. Fisher Jan 1976

Comparison Of Economic Returns From Grain Crops, H M. Fisher

Journal of the Department of Agriculture, Western Australia, Series 4

While wheat is still generally the most profitable crop in Western Australia the relative profitability of barley and linseed has risen in the last few years; in southern areas they are likely to be at least as profitable as wheat.

Oats has fallen in profitability relative to wheat, and grain legumes have suffered a marked fall. Yields of these grains have increased with the introduction of new varieties but their price increases have not kept pace with those of wheat and barley. The present relationship of yields and costs indicates that substantial price changes will be needed to change the …

Application Of A Hydrologic Model To The Planning And Design Of Storm Drainage Systems For Urban Areas, George B. Shih, Eugene K. Israelsen, Robert N. Parnell, Jr., J. Paul Riley

Reports

A generally applicable hybrid computer program is developed to simulate runoff from urban watersheds, and is applied to represent the outflow hydrographs of three urban watersheds located within Salt Lake County, Utah. The gaged outflow of the watersheds provided a means for comparing the observed and the simulated final outflow hydrographs. Each of the three watersheds was subdivided into spatial units or subzones, and the outflow hydrographs for each subzone were obtained by abstracting interceptions, infiltration, and depression storage from the rainfall hyetograph of each subzone. The resulting hydrograph outflow of each subzone was routed to the Jordan River, the …

An Economic Appraisal Of Reuse Concepts In Regional Water Supply Planning, Rangesan Narayanan, Bartell C. Jensen, A. Bruce Bishop, Kenneth S. Lyon

Reports

Using a conceptual model of a water supply firm, the necessary conditions for production and market efficiency are derived when renovated wastewater is considered as a potential water resource. The nature and extent of the supply augmentation due to recycled reuse is demonstrated using classical optimization techniques. Three stages of short-run supply corresponding to no recycling, partial recycled reuse and complete recycling of all reclaimable water are identified through appropriate Lagrangian Multipliers as well as graphical techniques. A mathematical programming model is structured to determine the optimal water resource allocation and pricing policy for Salt Lake County. By maximizing the …

Geology Of The Zacapa Quadrangle And Vicinity, Guatemala, Central America, David Philip Schwartz

Graduate Dissertations and Theses

Geologic mapping in the Zacapa quadrangle and southern Rio Hondo quadrangle has shown that the Las Ovejas Complex, of probable pre-Early Pennsylvanian age and the oldest rock south of the Motagua fault zone, is a sequence of interlayered schist, marble, amphibolite, gneiss and associated penetratively deformed diorite, tonalite and granodiorite. Metavolcanic, metavolcaniclastic, and metasedimentary rock includes original basalt, dacitic and rhyodacitic tuff, minor andesite, limestone and pelite. Emplacement of diorite coincided with regional prograde metamorphism to middle and upper amphibolite facies. Hornblende, diopside, staurolite, sillimanite, and K-feldspar formed in rock of appropriate bulk composition. In the Zacapa quadrangle, metamorphic grade …
