Hemorrhagic Component Of Northern Copperhead Venom, David Hill Jan 1975

Hemorrhagic Component Of Northern Copperhead Venom, David Hill

Honors Theses

The major hemorrhagic component of northern copperhead (Agkistrodon contortrix mokasen) venom was partially purified by ion exchange and molecular sieve column chromatography. TAME and Phospholipase enzymatic activities were shown to be unrelated to hemorrhage. BAEE and procoagulant activities appear to be associated. Hide powder activity seems to correlate with hemorrhagic activity. Both show metal and disulfide dependences.

The northern copperhead, (Agkistrodon contortrix mokasen) is commonly found in forests from Massachusetts to Illinois, and in highlands as far south as Georgia and Alabama.

The venom of the northern copperhead has been reported to contain several en- zymatic activities as well as …

Classification Of Surficial Materials, James Hadley Williams Jan 1975

Classification Of Surficial Materials, James Hadley Williams

Doctoral Dissertations

"A surficial materials classification system has been designed to fit the needs of a geologist in mapping and classifying surficial materials. The system developed in this study is intended primarily for analysis of surficial materials where time-stratigraphic markers are not applicable or recognized. Primary classification is based on fabric and mode of origin supplemented by data on engineering and pedologic properties.

Several types of classification systems presently exist for use in soil investigations. Only three of these systems have found widespread acceptance, two serving the engineering profession and the other the needs of the soil scientist. These systems are not …

Summary Of 1974 Weed Control In Lupin Evaluations, J. G. Allen Jan 1975

Summary Of 1974 Weed Control In Lupin Evaluations, J. G. Allen

Experimental Summaries - Plant Research

Lupin Trials 1974 1. Herbicides x Depth of Seeding - There is no evidence of a herbicide x depth of seeding interaction in lupin plant numbers, at either Broomehill or Eradu. The lupin plants on the shallow sown plots were reported to be more effected by herbicides than on the deeper sown plots at Eradu. It is suggested that shallow seeding may be a factor in predisposing lupin crops to simazine damage particularly on sandy soils, however it has not been possible to demonstrate such on effect. 2. Herbicides x Time of Seeding - At two sites (Myrup, Namban) there …

1975 Lupin Diseases, P M. Wood Jan 1975

1975 Lupin Diseases, P M. Wood

Experimental Summaries - Plant Research

Sclerotinia stem rot, a fungal disease, is becoming increasingly important. This disease can attack the stem at any point from the stem base to the first laterals. Lodging can result if the canker is severe enough. Superficial cankers can disrupt sap flow resulting in poorly filled pods. The fungicide Benlate is used overseas to control Sclerotinia in bean plantings, Accordingly, a fungicide trial was planned to estimate yield losses resulting from Sclerotinia infection. A secondary aim was to examine any yield response which could be attributed to reported growth promoting properties of benomyl - 75MT33. Brown spot of lupins - …

1975 Clover Scorch, D. L. Chatel Jan 1975

1975 Clover Scorch, D. L. Chatel

Experimental Summaries - Plant Research

(Feb 1976) This report covers the three major clover scorch activities for the year: A) The tolerance screening at Denmark. B) The dry matter production in the second year of a mowing trial, in which clovers with and without scorch were compared the previous year. C) A summary of the first four years of a disease incidence survey - and an examination of some meteorological factors in relation to disease development. The first two were done jointly with Dr C.M. Francis. The following tentative hypotheses are advanced to explain the regional differences in the distribution of clover scorch: a) The …

The Effect Of The Gradient-Drift Term On Type I Electrojet Irregularities, D. T. Farley, Bela G. Fejer Jan 1975

The Effect Of The Gradient-Drift Term On Type I Electrojet Irregularities, D. T. Farley, Bela G. Fejer

Bela G. Fejer

We hypothesize that type 1 VHF radar echoes can only be observed when the electrojet plasma is linearly unstable at half the radar wavelength and that further, for reasons not yet understood, the phase velocity of the unstable waves always corresponds to the threshold conditions for instability, even when the destabilizing forces (electron drift and plasma density gradient) exceed the threshold. This phase velocity, which produces the Doppler shift of the radar echoes, is usually close to the ion acoustic velocity of the medium but can differ from it to some extent because of the effect of the density gradient. …

Vertical Structure Of The Vhf Backscattering Region In The Equatorial Electrojet And The Gradient Drift Instability, Bela G. Fejer, D. T. Farley, B. B. Balsley, R. F. Woodman Jan 1975

Vertical Structure Of The Vhf Backscattering Region In The Equatorial Electrojet And The Gradient Drift Instability, Bela G. Fejer, D. T. Farley, B. B. Balsley, R. F. Woodman

Bela G. Fejer

Radar measurements made with high spatial resolution and large dynamic range at the Jicamarca Radar Observatory near the time of reversal of the electrojet current provide further proof that the gradient drift instability is in fact responsible for the type 2 irregularities. Echoes are received over a much wider range of altitudes at night than during the day partly because of the change in character of the background electron density profile and partly because of recombination effects, which can be important during the day. It is also shown that one must be cautious, particularly at night, in associating the mean …

Oblique Vhf Spectral Studies Ofthe Equatorial Electrojet, Bela G. Fejer, D. T. Farley, B. B. Balsley, R. F. Woodman Jan 1975

Oblique Vhf Spectral Studies Ofthe Equatorial Electrojet, Bela G. Fejer, D. T. Farley, B. B. Balsley, R. F. Woodman

Bela G. Fejer

A new narrow-beam antenna at the Jicamarca Observatory permits oblique (zenith angle, 25°) radar spectral studies of the electrojet with an altitude resolution down to 1.1 km. Only daytime observations are possible presently, however. The general altitude variations in spectral shape observed are consistent with linear instability theory, if the effect of recombination is included. The height at which the mean Doppler shift of the echo maximizes, however, is about 4 km higher than one would expect on the basis of electrojet models. An increase in the assumed collision frequency would remove the discrepancy. Other data presented strongly suggest that …

The Life Cycle Of A Kentucky Cave Beetle, Ptomaphagus Hirtus, (Coleoptera; Leiodidae; Catopinae), Stewart B. Peck

International Journal of Speleology

Ptomaphagus hirtus has been successfully kept in laboratory culture at 12.5°C with food in surplus at all times. Eggs hatched in 18.5 days. Three larval instars were present, which had a total larval life span of 42 days. The pupal stage lasted 32 days. Adult males and adult females had average life spans of 2.2 years and 1.6 years respectively. Maximum adult longevity was 4.2 years. Females reached reproductive maturity a month after eclosion, young and old females produced one egg every 3.5 and 3.8 days respectively, and were reproductively active for as long as 2.5 years. Compared to European …

77-4 Hydrographic And Biological Observations At An Anchor Station Off St. Augustine, Florida (Eastward Cruise E-1g-75), Larry P. Atkinson, Gustav A. Paffenhofer, William M. Dunstan

CCPO Publications

The intrusion of deep, nutrient-rich Gulf Stream water into the shelf waters off the southeastern United States is probably the major source of nutrients in the shelf waters and consequently intrusions have a major impact on the biota. This particular cruise was one of the first to be designed to find the front that represents the interface between intruding Gulf Stream waters and normal shelf water. Once the front was delineated an anchor station was occupied to observe the time change at a particular location as the front moved back and forth past the station.

The methods used and resultant …
