Selected chemical, physical and biological parameters were determined for a man-made lake, Beaver Lake, on the White River of Arkansas and Missouri. The research program determined the qualitative and quantitative aspects of the temporal and spatial distribution of the algal subcommunities. It was determined that the epipelic, epilithic, epizooic and metaphytic subcommunities had little influence on the euplanktonic subcommunity. The relationship between the qualitative and quantitative analysis of the biochromes chlorophyll-a, -b, and -c and the phytoplankton species clustered into biochrome sets is discussed. The coexistence of actinolite and hornblende and of cummingtonite and hornblende has been observed in garnet-zone and staurolite-kyanite-zone amphibolites of the Ammonoosuc Volcanics near Hanover, New Hampshire. The amphibole pairs occur both as separate grains and as intergrowths with boundaries that are optically and chemically sharp, but geometrically irregular; no exsolution lamellae were observed.Electron microprobe analyses of the amphibole pairs show that: (1) hornblende is richer in Al, Na, K, Ti, and Fea+,and has a lower Mg/(Me f Fe) ratio than the coexisting actinolite; (2) hornblende is enriched in Al, Na, and Ca, but has a similar Mel(Mg f Fe) …

Journal of the Arkansas Academy of Science

Chemistry programs in 87 predominantly Black institutions were compared by questionnaire survey. Advanced undergraduate courses were offered for chemistry majors by 86% of these schools, but only 28% offered research and independent study for undergraduates. Although there were extremes, most of the faculty taught 15 to 18 contact hours and their median salaries were below the national median. Library support seemed adequate with 1 to 1.5% of the total library materials being chemistry books, texts and reference, and the libraries of most schools had holdings of 15 principal chemistry-related journals. "Megascopic examination of diamond-drill cores supplemented by insoluble residue data provides a usable means of studying the lithologic characteristic of Upper Cambrian strata in the subsurface of western Missouri.

The stratigraphic relationships within each Cambrian formation and the relationships of each Cambrian unit to formations above and below are discussed.

The relationship of Upper Cambrian strata to the Precambrian surface in western Missouri and easternmost Kansas is illustrated. Formcoke was produced experimentally from a North Dakota lignite and a Wyoming subbituminous coal. The effect of initial charring tem perature (600°C or 900°C), of char grain size (less than 18 mesh, less than 35 mesh, or less than 60 mesh), of briquetting pressure (1000, 2000, 3000, 4000, 5000, 6000, 7000, 8000, 9000 or 10,000 psi) of binder percentage (5, 10, 15, 20 or 25 per cent), and of final carbonization heating rate (18°C/:min, 12°C/min or 6°C/min) on formcoke briquet com pressive strength was studied.

We present models for temperature and ionization structure of low, uniform-density (n ~ 0.3 cm^-3) interstellar gas in a galactic disk which is exposed to soft X-rays from supernova outbursts occurring randomly in space and time. The structure was calculated by computing the time record of temperature and ionization at a given point by Monte Carlo simulation. The calculation yields probability distribution functions for ionized fraction x, temperature T, and their various observable moments. These time-dependent models predict a bimodal temperature distribution of the gas with structure in x, T that agrees with various observations. Cold regions in the low-density …

"The Mean-Variance portfolio selection model, or Efficient Market model, is examined in terms of the small investor. The performance is first tested on the small sample space of the thirty Dow Jones Industrials. The results show that it is possible to outperform the market by investing in the minimum-variance, or safest, portfolio. The Critical-Line algorithm as developed by Markowitz and modified by Sharpe is used in this analysis.

Since the Critical-Line algorithm is very time-consuming and does not always converge to a solution, an alternate algorithm is developed. This algorithm, referred to as the “Simplified Algorithm”, is designed to find …

It is demonstrated that in a Penning collision of optically oriented metastable helium atoms with an impurity metal atom such as barium, both the longitudinal and transverse components of spin angular momentum are conserved. This results in a polarization of the ion which may be detected by optical emission in the case of excited ion levels or absorption for the ground states. A series of experiments is described which demonstrates the spin dependence of the Penning-collision process. A general first-order formula is derived for the Fresnel-drag effect in a uniformly moving medium with a plane surface. The two classical equations due to Lorentz and Laub are shown to be special cases corresponding to different experimental arrangements.
