Where Are We? - National Scene, Richard N. Smith

Bird Control Seminars Proceedings

When the question is asked, “Where are we?”, we must compare our progress to where we were in the past or to a goal of the future. When we do this, it is apparent that much has been accomplished during the past ten years, however, the goal of alleviating bird damage to all agricultural crops has not yet been met. We have developed methods to combat crop losses (Avitrol, scaring devices), we know more about bird population dynamics, more about bird behavior and physiology. Yet, there is much more to accomplish, for we have a number of bird crop damage …

Agricultural Scene, Charles P. Stone

Bird Control Seminars Proceedings

It has been suggested that our approach to agricultural bird problems is perhaps wrong, and I feel it would be valuable to ask several individuals to give their ideas as to where their programs are heading right now. I would first like to ask Jerry Besser, the Chief of the Bird Section of the Denver Wildlife Center, to give just a brief statement as to where they are now. BESSER: Most of our efforts are being channelled into the agricul- tural area on a broad scale. Many of the problems are national ones. We can put our finger on the …

Decline Of A Blackbird Population During Seven Years Of Baiting With A Chemical Frightening Agent, Jerome F. Besser, John W. De Grazio, Joseph L. Guarino Oct 1973

Decline Of A Blackbird Population During Seven Years Of Baiting With A Chemical Frightening Agent, Jerome F. Besser, John W. De Grazio, Joseph L. Guarino

Bird Control Seminars Proceedings

In the early 1960's, Sand Lake National Wildlife Refuge, Brown County, South Dakota, served as an assembling area for the largest late summer blackbird congregation known to us in the Norhtern Great Plains or the western portion of the Cornbelt. Approximately 4,000 acres of cattail (Typha) and reed (Phragmites) at the Refuge served as ideal roosting habitat for blackbirds. In August and September each year, postbreeding flocks of blackbirds from northern South Dakota, North Dakota, and Canada assembled to molt in these marshes and to feed on the abundant blackbird foods in the surrounding agricultural lands before migrating to wintering …

Bird Management On The Farm And At The Processing Plant, Thomas K. Palmer Oct 1973

Bird Management On The Farm And At The Processing Plant, Thomas K. Palmer

Bird Control Seminars Proceedings

Bird management, whether conducted on farms or at food processing plants, utilizes a rather limited number of techniques in conjunction with an intimate knowledge of pest avian behavior. The deployment of bird management techniques is dependent upon the complexity of pest induced environment and limitations imposed by human, moral, political, social and economic pressures.

Bird Damage To Tart Cherries In Michigan, 1972, Charles P. Stone Oct 1973

Bird Damage To Tart Cherries In Michigan, 1972, Charles P. Stone

Bird Control Seminars Proceedings

Bird damage to commercial fruits has long been a problem in many coun- tries, but the true magnitude of the damage incurred is difficult to determine objectively. Often the opinions of fruit growers provide the only measure of importance. In 1972, the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, the Michigan Department of Agriculture, and the Statistical Reporting Service of the U.S. Department of Agriculture obtained quantitative information on bird damage to tart cherries (Prunus mahalob) in Michigan. The results of the survey are presented in this paper.

Two Tests Of The Avian Repellent, Methiocarb, In Michigan Sweet Cherry Orchards, Allen R. Stickley Jr. Oct 1973

Two Tests Of The Avian Repellent, Methiocarb, In Michigan Sweet Cherry Orchards, Allen R. Stickley Jr.

Bird Control Seminars Proceedings

Sweet cherries provide a major source of income to Michigan fruit growers. Annual production in Michigan during the period 1963-1971 averaged 44 million pounds, or 18 percent of the national total (Smith, et al. 1973). Bird damage to Michigan cherries is a major problem. Although no figures are available on the extent of sweet cherry damage, Stone (1973) estimated that in 1972 bird damage to Michigan tart cherries amounted to 17.4 percent of the crop. According to growers we interviewed, damage to black sweet cherries is often more severe than to tart cherries. These growers also report some damage to …

The Monk Parakeet In New York, Douglas P. Kibbe, Noel J. Cutright Oct 1973

The Monk Parakeet In New York, Douglas P. Kibbe, Noel J. Cutright

Bird Control Seminars Proceedings

Attention was focused on the Monk Parakeet (Myiopsitta monachus) in New York State in 1971 when the first successful breeding record was documented for the state although Monk Parakeets had been noticed in New York and New Jersey since 1968 (Bull, 1971). Since 1971 awareness of the bird’s potential for becoming an established species in New York has spread through several segments of the state’s populace. This awareness has been created primarily through two articles in the magazine published by the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation (DEC), The Conservationist (Trimm, 1972) (Trimm, 1973); several articles in popular magazines, …

Monk Parakeet Damage To Crops In Uruguay And Its Control, Donald F. Mott Oct 1973

Monk Parakeet Damage To Crops In Uruguay And Its Control, Donald F. Mott

Bird Control Seminars Proceedings

The monk parakeet (Myiopsitta monachus) is considered to be a serious agricultural pest in South America. The species is resident in a sizable area from southeast Bolivia, Paraguay, and southern Brazil, through Uruguay, to central Argentina (Meyer de Schauensee, 1970: 103). Since it is hardy, adaptable, and widely sold as a cage bird, there is now concern that large enough populations may become established in the United States to cause damage to grain and fruit crops (Bump, 1971). In April 1973, I visited Uruguay under the sponsorship of the U.S. Agency for International Development (AID) to investigate patterns of agricultural …

Sociocultural Impact Of Reservoirs On Local Government Institutions, Philip Drucker, Jerry Eugene Clark, Lesker Dianne Smith Oct 1973

Sociocultural Impact Of Reservoirs On Local Government Institutions, Philip Drucker, Jerry Eugene Clark, Lesker Dianne Smith

KWRRI Research Reports

This study of the probable sociocultural impact of a proposed reservoir in central Kentucky on the institutions of local governments of a community adjacent to the reservoir utilizes anthropological concepts of social values and cultural and social change as well as anthropological research techniques. Data on observed impact on the same institutions in communities adjacent to two recently completed Kentucky reservoirs permit inferences as to probable directions and extent of reservoir-related change. Specific aspects of impact considered include: effects of reduction of the county tax base due to Federal acquisition of lands, including necessity for increased severity of taxes and …

Recently, J. Chandra [1] obtained comparison estimates for differential equations with deviating argument (1) [see pdf for notation] on the interval I: to [see pdf for notation] , where [see pdf for notation] is a given continuous function defined on a suitable interval (containing I ), together with the boundary conditions (2) [see pdf for notation] for [see pdf for notation] The class of BVP (1) - (2) is incorporated in a larger class discussed in [3]. The introduction in [1] of a maximal solution has furnished comparison results and an iterative procedure for obtaining solutions. The use of the …

Comparison Principle And Non Linear Contract In Abstract Spaces, V. Lakshmikantham, Jerome Eisenfeld Oct 1973

Comparison Principle And Non Linear Contract In Abstract Spaces, V. Lakshmikantham, Jerome Eisenfeld

Mathematics Technical Papers

The theory of differential and integral equations exploits comparison and iterative techniques which do not fall under the Contractive Mapping Principle. For they make use of partial orderings and maximal solutions; concepts which have no significance in a metric space. These methods take their proper place in the theory of cones [1], [2]. In this paper, Banach's Contraction Mapping Principle and comparison and iterative methods are brought together under a single roof which houses various results from the theory of differential equations [3], in addition to an interesting generalization of Banach's Theorem [4]. One 'It thus led, in a natural …
