State Of Bacterial Dna After Uptake Into The Roots Of Germinating Barley Seeds, Larry Dale Lawson Aug 1973

State Of Bacterial Dna After Uptake Into The Roots Of Germinating Barley Seeds, Larry Dale Lawson

Theses and Dissertations

Germinating barley seeds have been shown to take up Bacillus subtilis DNA labelled with 5-bromouracil and tritiated thymidine and retain the DNA in the root system without substantially degrading it. The percentage of bacterial DNA recovered from the total root DNA was independent of the amount of bacterial DNA available for uptake. Four observations indicated the stability of bacterial DNA after uptake into barley roots: (1) the bacterial DNA retained its transforming ability after recovery from the roots; (2) the labelled B. subtilis DNA showed similar CsCl density gradient patterns before uptake and after uptake; (3) most of the radioactivity …

I. An Isothermal Titration Microcalorimeter. Ii. Importance Of Micronutrients In Nutrition. Iii. Zinc Bibliography, John Willard Gardner

Theses and Dissertations

I. An isothermal titration microcalorimeter having a colume of 4 ml and capable of temerature control to ±2 x 10-5°C is described. Major components include a constant temperature water bath controlled to ±3 x 10-4°C, a platinum reation vessel, and an isothermal control circuit consisting of constant Peltier thermoelectric cooling and variable Joule heating controlled by a thermistor in an AC Wheatstone bridge circuit. The calorimeter was tested by measuring the heat of ionization of water and was found to produce data accurate to ± 0.1% where small samples are used such as in the investigation of many biological systems.

Study Of Dynamic Programming And Gambling Systems., N. D. Prabhakar Dr.

Doctoral Theses

The body of methods known as Dynamic Programming (d.p.) was developed by Bellman and was successfully applied by him to solve practical problems in diverse fields (see 12] and the pa pers cited there.). These methods revolved around an intuitively appealing principle which Bellman called the principle of optimatity. A general formulation of d.p. problem was given by Blackwell (3, s] which is narrower in scope than Bollman's but includes many important applications i12) and offers a proper framework for asking the many inte- resting and mathematically sophisticated questions that arise in d.p.. Magnetoresistance In Iron And Cobalt To 150 Koe , R.V. Coleman, R.C. Morris, David J. Sellmyer

David Sellmyer Publications

Magnetoresistance anisotropy and field dependence have been studied in single crystals of iron and cobalt in fields up to 150 kOe in the temperature range 1-4.2 K. The crystals of iron and cobalt had residual resistance ratios up to ∼4600 and ∼400, respectively. The relation Δρ/ρ0=aBn has been studied for both metals and in the case of iron the exponent n approaches values in the range 1.8-1.9 for fields up to 90 kOe and then decreases to the range 1.3-1.5 at 150 kOe. This decrease in the exponent has been observed for all field and current …

Synthesis And Selected Reactions Of [Pi]-(Arene) Chromium Tricarbonyls, Anthony L. Scaggs

Master's Theses

This project was concerned wit hthe preparation of two pi-(arene)-chromium tricarbonyl compounds that could serve as a synthetic intermediates to more complex systems. These intermediates would be particularly well-suited for the preparation of mono-complexed diaryl compounds. The two intermediates selected were pi-(acetophenone) chromium tricarbonyl and pi-(benzyl bromide) chromium tricarbonyl. After the intermediates had been synthesized, their utility in several selected reactions was to be examined.

Process Control Of Activated Sludge Treatment, Richard I. Kermode, Robert W. J. Brett, Kenneth A. Debelak, John J. Davis

KWRRI Research Reports

General feed forward controllers, conforming to standard control modes, have been derived for an activated sludge process. The analysis indicated that the appropriate controllers are proportional control with measurement of substrate flow rate, and derivative control with measurement of inlet substrate concentration, and manipulation of the rate of return sludge by both controllers.

The performance of these controllers was tested by computer simulation of five dynamic aerator models with and without sludge storage, and with two settling basin models. In all cases significant reduction of the maximum exit substrate concentration was achieved. Additional improvement resulted from the use of sludge …

Development Of The Turbidity Maximum In A Coastal Plain Estuary : Final Report, Maynard M. Nichols, Galen Thompson Jul 1973

Development Of The Turbidity Maximum In A Coastal Plain Estuary : Final Report, Maynard M. Nichols, Galen Thompson

Reports

A study of the turbidity maximum in the Rappahannock Estuary; Virginia was conducted to determine how high concentrations of suspended sediment accumulate to form a maximum.

Time-series observations of current velocity, salinity and suspended sediment over 8 to 18 tidal cycles reveal that the maximum forms in a convergence of bottom residual currents near the transition between fresh and salty water. Sediment supplied mainly by the river is transported into the convergence by density currents and accumulates since velocity is nearly zero and settling exceeds upward mixing.

The maximum forms in the middle estuary after freshet or flooding and shifts …

Remote Sensing Of Earth Resources System Capabilities V.S. Design Constraints, William Howard Grisham Jul 1973

Remote Sensing Of Earth Resources System Capabilities V.S. Design Constraints, William Howard Grisham

Retrospective Theses and Dissertations

There is new evidence that global earth resources satellite net will be practical. This paper weighs recent advances in remote sensing to pinpoint the dominant constraints. The data and sensor systems interfacing requirements are critically reviewed. It is shown that conventional optics constraints can be relaxed, with the newer systems, based on multi-spectral imagery and statistical processing methods. The most powerful computational methods use algorithms based on a Gaussian assumption for the species vector in feature space, but biases in the imagery limit their efficiency. A rationale is proposed: improving the observational network calibrating efficiency will also improve the photogrammetric …

Electron-Beam Retardation Contact Potential Of Cuprous Oxide, James Lindle Jul 1973

Electron-Beam Retardation Contact Potential Of Cuprous Oxide, James Lindle

Masters Theses & Specialist Projects

The purpose of this research is to determine the contact potential of cuprous oxide, Cu2O, with respect to gold. A band model for cuprous oxide is presented.

Single-crystal cuprous oxide is prepared from Oxygen Free High Conductivity copper equilibrated at 120°C and at atmospheric pressure. The contact potential difference of cuprous oxide (using gold as a reference) is measured in a bakeable ultrahigh vacuum system using a modified version of Nelson's electron beam retardation method. Measurements made at 10-6 torr and at room temperature give a value of 0.1 +/-0.05 eV for the contact potential difference of …

Complexes Of The 2,2'-Bisacylhydrazide Of 3,3'-Bipyridine And The Dipicolinic Acid Dihydrazide Ligand Systems, William Leo Johnson Iii Jul 1973

Complexes Of The 2,2'-Bisacylhydrazide Of 3,3'-Bipyridine And The Dipicolinic Acid Dihydrazide Ligand Systems, William Leo Johnson Iii

Chemistry & Biochemistry Theses & Dissertations

The copper(II) complexes of the picolinic acid bydrazide (PH), the dipicolinic acid dibydrazide (DPH), and the 2,2'-bisacylbydrazide of 3,3'-bipyridine (DAR) ligand systems have been prepared and have been characterized by infrared spectroscopy. Coordination has been proposed to occur between the terminal amine, the amide nitrogen, and the ring nitrogen in each of the respective complexes.

Evidence for the loss of the amide hydrogen upon complexation of PH, DPH, and DAH with copper(II) has been observed by the n.m.r. study of the zinc(II) complexes of the PH and DAH ligand systems. This is in support of the structures proposed above for …

Particle Size Distribution And Small-Scale Bed-Forms On Sand Waves, Chesapeake Bay Entrance, Virginia, John T. Wells Jul 1973

Particle Size Distribution And Small-Scale Bed-Forms On Sand Waves, Chesapeake Bay Entrance, Virginia, John T. Wells

OES Theses and Dissertations

The relationship between sediment texture and topography has been studied along five series of sand waves in Chesapeake Bay entrance, Virginia. Results indicate that two types of sand waves with reference to mean grain size are present: sand waves with coarse sediment on crests and fine in troughs, and sand waves with fine sediment on crests and coarse in troughs. Asymmetrical, migrating sand waves exhibit the first type; near-symmetrical, non-migrating sand waves exhibit the second type. In general, bimodal sediment is present on crests of migrating sand waves and in troughs of stationary sand waves. There is a progressive decrease …

Phycosociology Of The Estuarine Eulittoral Of Smith Island Virginia: A Quantitative Approach To Seasonal Periodicity, William M. Willis

OES Theses and Dissertations

Seasonal periodicity of benthic algae of the estuarine eulittoral of Smith Island, Virginia, (37°07’55” N, 75°55’ W), has been investigated on a qualitative and quantitative basis. Forty-three taxa of benthic eucaryiotic algae were found to be present; of these, twenty-one were quantitatively significant at least once during the course of the study. Five species represent additions to the Virginia flora, and, at the same time, also represent southern extensions of the known U.S. east coast range. The range of three other species has been extended, though they are not new to Virginia.

Review of the literature suggests two models of …

Aromatic Solvent Induced Shifts Of Trifluoromethyl Pyrazoles, Manuel Constantine Bourlas Jun 1973

Aromatic Solvent Induced Shifts Of Trifluoromethyl Pyrazoles, Manuel Constantine Bourlas

Master's Theses

Nuclear Magnetic Resonance (NMR) has been used to study the keto-enol equilibrium in a number of trifluoromethyl S-diketones as well as the dihydropyrazoles obtained when these S- diketones are reacted with thiosemicarbazide. The technique of Aromatic Solvent-Induced Shifts (ASIS) has been used to study the geometry of the collision complex and the strength of the association between solute and solvent. From the data presented, the stereochemistry of these pyrazoles has been determined and a reaction mechanism for their formation has been proposed.
