Radiative And Predissociative Lifetimes Of The A ²Σ+ State Of Oh, Richard Orlin Sutherland, Richard A. Anderson Feb 1973

Radiative And Predissociative Lifetimes Of The A ²Σ+ State Of Oh, Richard Orlin Sutherland, Richard A. Anderson

Chemistry Faculty Research & Creative Works

Lifetime measurements have been made on the A 2Σ+ state of OH by the delayed coincidence technique in conjunction with an interrupted rf discharge through water vapor. Lifetimes are reported for rotational states up to K=29 and K=20 in the ν=0 and ν=1 vibrational levels, respectively, and on the unresolved levels of ν=2. A predissociation, previously predicted from relative intensity measurements, resulting from a curve crossing by the repulsive 4Σ− state, was observed for the rotational states above K=23 of ν=0, for those above K=14 of ν=1, and for all those of ν=2. These lifetime data are discussed qualitatively in …

Spin Polarization And Differential Cross Section For Electron-Impact Excitation Of The 6s6p ¹P₁ State Of Mercury: Distorted-Wave Treatment, Don H. Madison, W. Neil Shelton Feb 1973

Spin Polarization And Differential Cross Section For Electron-Impact Excitation Of The 6s6p ¹P₁ State Of Mercury: Distorted-Wave Treatment, Don H. Madison, W. Neil Shelton

Physics Faculty Research & Creative Works

The results of the distorted-wave theory for electron-impact excitation of atoms are applied to the excitation of the 6s6p 1P1 state of mercury. The spin polarization and the differential cross section are given for unpolarized incident electron beams with energies between 25 and 180 eV. The distorted-wave results are compared with experimental data, and good agreement is found for both the spin polarization and differential cross section.

Absolute Line Strengths By Analysis Of Lu-Fano Plots With Application To Excited State Transitions In Neon, Anthony F. Starace Jan 1973

Absolute Line Strengths By Analysis Of Lu-Fano Plots With Application To Excited State Transitions In Neon, Anthony F. Starace

Anthony F. Starace Publications

Using energy eigenfunctions obtained by semi-empirical analysis of the Lu-Fano plot of energy level positions and employing the Coulomb approximation of Bates and Damgaard, we calculate absolute line strengths for transitions between the neon two-channel Rydberg series 2p5(2P3/2,1/2)ns J = 1 and 2p5 (2P3/2,1/2)n′ p J = 0 for n, n' = 3,4. Each Rydberg series is analyzed separately to obtain a set of five parameters which completely define the energy eigenfunctions for all values of n and n'. Interactions between the ns J = 1 …

Quasi-Unmixed Local Rings And Quasi-Subspaces, Peter G. Sawtelle Jan 1973

Quasi-Unmixed Local Rings And Quasi-Subspaces, Peter G. Sawtelle

Mathematics and Statistics Faculty Research & Creative Works

The concept of a quasi-subspace is defined so that it plays a role relative to quasi-unmixedness analogous to that of subspace to unmixedness. This definition is used to characterize quasi-unmixed local rings. © 1973 American Mathematical Society.

A First Order Method For Differential Equations Of Neutral Type, R. N. Castleton, L. J. Grimm

Mathematics and Statistics Faculty Research & Creative Works

A first order method is presented for solution of the initial-value problem for a differential equation of neutral type with implicit delay in the critical case where the time-lag is zero and the method of stepwise integration does not apply. A convergence theorem is proved, and numerical examples are given. © 1973, American Mathematical Society.

Energies And Z-Expansion Coefficients For The D States In The Helium Sequence, P. Blanchard, Gordon W. F. Drake Jan 1973

Energies And Z-Expansion Coefficients For The D States In The Helium Sequence, P. Blanchard, Gordon W. F. Drake

Physics Publications

Non-relativistic variational energies for the 1s3d(1,3D) states of the helium isoelectronic sequence are calculated with a 50-term correlated basis set for Z=2-10, where Z is the nuclear charge, and the corresponding Z-expansion coefficients found through sixth order by fitting the energies to a series in Z-1. A variational-perturbation calculation of these coefficients through eleventh order (with the same basis set) is presented for comparison, and agreement is satisfactory. The 3d energies obtained by summing the Z-expansion perturbation series are found to yield excellent approximations to the variational values. The calculations are extended to the 1s4d( 1,3D) states to furnish variational …

Photon-Scattering Theory Of The Quenching Of Hydrogenic Metastables, Gordon W. F. Drake, R. B. Grimley Jan 1973

Photon-Scattering Theory Of The Quenching Of Hydrogenic Metastables, Gordon W. F. Drake, R. B. Grimley

Physics Publications

The quenching of hydrogenic metastables is formulated as a near-resonant photon-scattering problem, and a complete analysis of the polarization and angular distribution of the emitted radiation is presented. The contribution from np states with n>2 is calculated, and an alternative method of measuring the Lamb shift is suggested. © 1973 The American Physical Society.

A Study Of The Dickey-Lincoln Hydroelectric Project And Its Impact On The Resources Of The Upper Saint John River Valley, Rosemary M. Manning, Sierra Club, New England Chapter

Dickey-Lincoln School Lakes Project

This report was under-taken primarily to evaluate the impact that the construction of the Dickey-Lincoln project would have upon the resources of the Upper St. John River, and to examine the assertion that the Dickey-Lincoln project constitutes a wise use of the public's environmental and economic resources. Since the case that has been made for the construction of the Dickey-Lincoln project rest primarily on the justification of the project in economic terms, this aspect of the project proposal will be intensively explored.

Preliminary Report Of The Oil And Gas Possibilities Between Pine And Cumberland Mountains, Southeastern Kentucky, A J. Froelich Jan 1973

Preliminary Report Of The Oil And Gas Possibilities Between Pine And Cumberland Mountains, Southeastern Kentucky, A J. Froelich

Report of Investigations--KGS

Elongate, low-amplitude flexures in strata of Pennsylvanian age have been delineated in recent mapping by the U. S. Geological Survey in cooperation with the Kentucky Geological Survey in a 600-square-mile (l ,536- square-kilometer) area between Pine and Cumberland Mountains in southeastern Kentucky. Cresta! culminations on gentle anticlinal folds may indicate loci of subsurface closures for entrapment of oil and gas. The area studied is underlain by more than 15,000 feet (4,500 meters) of Paleozoic strata containing potential source-beds, reservoirs, and cap rocks. Faults, unconformities, abrupt facies changes, and regional thickness variations enhance the geologic setting for possible oil and gas …

The Investigation Of Snowfall Rate Using Optical Techniques, Gerald J. Mulvey Jan 1973

The Investigation Of Snowfall Rate Using Optical Techniques, Gerald J. Mulvey

Atmospheric and Environmental Sciences Theses and Dissertations

Experiments involving the attenuation of light by falling snow, or hydrometeors in general, lend themselves to the study of at least two problems of meteorological interest. The first problem is that of visibility in adverse weather conditions, and the second is that of finding a better method to measure precipitation. From the late 1940's through the late 1960's, various investigators have attempted to apply forward light scattering theory in the geometric optics range (α ≥ 200, where α = (2π_r)/λ, λ=wavelength and r = radius)* to quantitatively describe the attenuation of a light beam, and thereby visibility changes due to …

Summary Of 1972 Seasonal Results "Decide" Superphosphate Rates On Pastures, J. W. Bowden

Experimental Summaries - Plant Research

A total of 53 pasture trials were topdressed. Of these, 37 trials were quantitatively assessed at different times during the growing season. Of the 15 wheat trials sown, only four trials gave useful results because of multiple drilling techniques used on most trials. Until the trial results have undergone comprehensive statistical analysis, no conclusions can be drawn. about the levels of response or "optimum" rates of superphosphate application at individual sites. However, because of the very short growing season in 1972 responses were generally poor. It appears that nil superphosphate application would have been optimum for animal production in the …

This book is an attempt to present to the general public representative types of many of the conspicuous wild flowers found in Nebraska. These 260-some plants in no way constitute a flora of Nebraska which would number some 1,700 species of flowering plants. Included herein are both native and naturalized flowering herbaceous plants exclusive of the grasses and grasslike plants. Among these are plants that have had a long existence here and others which have recently invaded our area. Some are highly cherished and others are considered as common weeds. Excluded from this book are woody plants, such as trees, …

Social And Cultural Impact Of A Proposed Reservoir On A Rural Kentucky School District, Charles R. Smith, Philip Drucker Jan 1973

Social And Cultural Impact Of A Proposed Reservoir On A Rural Kentucky School District, Charles R. Smith, Philip Drucker

KWRRI Research Reports

This study utilizes anthropological concepts and research methods to study the educational system of a Central Kentucky school district with the goal of predicting the impact on it of a proposed multi-purpose (flood control, recreation, etc.) reservoir, and proposing options for forestalling dysfunctional aspects of that impact. The impact will result from the fact that although the county is now rurally oriented, the proposed reservoir will attract (has already begun to attract) urbanite residents from nearby Louisville, Kentucky's largest urban center, who can be expected to bring urban values concerning education, as well as other areas. To assess probable directions …
