Semiclassical Theory Of Inelastic Collisions I. Classical Picture And Semiclassical, John B. Delos, W. R. Thorson, Stephen Knudson Aug 1972

Semiclassical Theory Of Inelastic Collisions I. Classical Picture And Semiclassical, John B. Delos, W. R. Thorson, Stephen Knudson

Arts & Sciences Articles

This series of papers is concerned with the derivation of the equations of the classical picture of atomic collisions, iℏddtdi(t)=Σjhij(t)dj(t), which describe the "time" dependence of electronic-quantum-state amplitudes as the nuclei move along a classical trajectory. These equations are derived in two ways. In the first formulation, which coincides with the intuitive classical picture of the collision, the nuclear part of the wave function is treated as a superposition of narrow wave packets, each traveling along a classical trajectory. In the second formulation, a semiclassical approach is used. The validity and meaning of the two formulations are discussed and compared.

Physics and Astronomy Faculty Patents

Apparatus for use in examining or treating patients with X-radiation or the like requires the making of a permanent record of the radiation applied. The operation of the radiation source is controlled in dependence upon the making of the record and the to radiation, or dose exposure is limited to a predetermined amount. A method is disclosed for safeguarding the patient and for producing a tangible record of the dose to which the patient is subjected.

Reducing Uncertainty, Richard C. Heyser Jul 1972

Reducing Uncertainty, Richard C. Heyser

Unpublished Writings

Intended for audio engineers, Richard C. Heyser meant for this paper to bring attention to the misapplication of the theoretical concept, the Uncertainty Principle. Heyser argues that this concept has been "freely applied without regard to the errors which may result due to lack of understanding of its derivation."

Development Of The Oso-6 High-Energy Neutron Detector And Correlation Of Measured Solar Neutron Fluxes To Solar Flares, Frederick Young Jul 1972

Development Of The Oso-6 High-Energy Neutron Detector And Correlation Of Measured Solar Neutron Fluxes To Solar Flares, Frederick Young

Physics & Astronomy ETDs

In an attempt to understand certain of the high energy processes that occur in the solar and terrestrial atmospheres and the interplanetary medium a detector of 20 to 160 MeV neutrons had been designed and constructed for inclusion in the NASA Orbiting Solar Observatory, Satellite OSO-G, which was launched into a near circular orbit at approximately 500 km altitude in August 1969. Both the angle of incidence and the energy of the neutron are determined by a telescopic arrangement of four scintillation plastic counters (Pilot B; hydrogen to carbon ratio 1:1) which generates proton recoils and provides pulse heights for …

Enzymatic Synthesis Of Oligoribonucleotides Of Defined Base Sequence, Bronwyn Geraldine Hughes Jul 1972

Enzymatic Synthesis Of Oligoribonucleotides Of Defined Base Sequence, Bronwyn Geraldine Hughes

Theses and Dissertations

A possible method for the synthesis of ordered oligoribonucleotides involves primer-dependent polynucleotide phosphorylase (PNPase) synthesis using the RNase A or T1 resistant N-cyclohexyl-N'-β(4-methylmorpholinium)ethylcarbodiimide chloride (CMC-Cl) derivatives of uridine or guanosine containing primers. Thus, CMC-UpA, CMC-GpA, CMC-UpCpC, CMC-GpApC, and ApApApApU-CMC were prepared and studied as primers for PNPase in 15 min 14C-ADP polymerization reactions and also in 6-10 hr synthesis reactions. The CMC-primers were not suitable primers for PNPase catalyzed synthesis reactions for either time. The PNPases used in such studies were contaminated with nuclease that showed the following order of susceptibility: UpA > CpC, GpA > ApU, ApA. Even a highly purified …

Glacial Geology Near Mcmurdo Sound And Comparison With The Central Transantarctic Mountains, Paul Andrew Mayewski Jul 1972

Glacial Geology Near Mcmurdo Sound And Comparison With The Central Transantarctic Mountains, Paul Andrew Mayewski

Earth Science Faculty Scholarship

(From summary, pp. 105-106) In the central Transantarctic Mountains, the Sirius Formation consists of both a lower massive till and an upper assemblage of interlayered till and stratified lenses. Deposits of the Sirius Formation found in the McMurdo region contain only the lower massive till. The lower massive till of the Sirius Formation is thought to be a basal till because of extremely strong fabric, high concentration of faceted and striated pebbles, and heterogeneous particle sizes (clay to boulders). Fabrics observed in the basal till indicate that the ice that deposited the Sirius Formation, although displaying a much higher surface …

A New Species Of Menoceras From The Marsland Formation Of Nebraska, Lloyd G. Tanner Jul 1972

A New Species Of Menoceras From The Marsland Formation Of Nebraska, Lloyd G. Tanner

Bulletin of the University of Nebraska State Museum

Further study indicates that the Menoceras remains collected from the "Bridgeport Quarries" (lower port:on or the Marsland Formation, Middle Miocene, of the Hemingford Group) are of a new species.

In 1962, these dicerathere remains were considered to be a geologic variety of Diceratherium niobrarensis (Stecher, Schultz, and Tanner). However, later (Tanner, 1969) a generic distinction was revived, separating the Menoceras Troxell from Diceratherium Marsh. Diceretherium niobrarensis was then placed in synonymy with Menoceras arikarense (Barbour).

The new species is an intermediate between Menoceras arikarense (Barbour) from the Harrison Formation and Menoceras marslandensis Tanner, from the upper portion of the Marsland …

Moment-Curvature-Thrust Relationships In Hybrid Members, Douglas Wrenn Fiala Jul 1972

Moment-Curvature-Thrust Relationships In Hybrid Members, Douglas Wrenn Fiala

Dissertations and Theses

In order to overcome the difficulties encountered in closed form solutions, moment-curvature-thrust relationships are developed for hybrid and nonhybrid cross sections utilizing an open form method. The use of horizontal sectors permits the inclusion of residual stresses and/or nonbilinear stress-strain relationships, if desired. Theoretical and experimental data are compared. Applications to circular tubes and other cross sections are discussed. Results indicate that open form solutions are feasible for calculating moment-curvature-thrust data. Hybrid cross sections are easily treated by open form solutions.

A Correlation Of The Idealized Heat Of Vaporization To Molecular Weight, Harold Earl Bennett Jul 1972

A Correlation Of The Idealized Heat Of Vaporization To Molecular Weight, Harold Earl Bennett

Master's Theses

Using the Clausius-Clapeyron equation as a base, many investigators have tried to develop variations to better describe both ideal and non-ideal systems. The literature is abundant with correlations of vapor pressure to temperature and associated correlations of latent heats of vaporization to molecular characteristics; often molecular weight or carbon number.

Hydraulic And Sediment Transport Studies In Relation To River Sediment Control And Solid Waste Pollution And Economic Use Of The By-Products, Bruce R. Moore, Michael R. Short Jul 1972

Hydraulic And Sediment Transport Studies In Relation To River Sediment Control And Solid Waste Pollution And Economic Use Of The By-Products, Bruce R. Moore, Michael R. Short

KWRRI Research Reports

The distribution of sediments and conditions of transport were studied in the Kentucky, Big Sandy and Ohio Rivers. The sand and coal were in transport at different flow velocities for the rivers and the deposition of these sediments was a direct function of the flow conditions at a particular locality.

The flow conditions of transport of the sediments were studied in flumes as were the hydraulic conditions in model dredge holes to determine the feasibility of trapping sediment. The conditions of scour and fill were also established and compared with known conditions in a dredge hole in the Ohio River. …

Impact Of A Proposed Reservoir On Local Land Values, Philip Drucker, Charles R. Smith, Allen C. Turner Jul 1972

Impact Of A Proposed Reservoir On Local Land Values, Philip Drucker, Charles R. Smith, Allen C. Turner

KWRRI Research Reports

This project was designed to study the impact of private preconstruction land acquisition in a Central Kentucky area in which a flood-control dam and reservoir impoundment is planned. The research design was built around use of anthropological concepts and research techniques. By these means it was possible to analyze the perceived values of land to traditionalist residents, among which social and economic security concepts are paramount. Recent land purchases, locally believed to have been made chiefly by "outsiders," (urbanites from nearby Louisville), at prices out of line in terms of local agricultural worth, has been extremely unsettling contributing to the …
