The Study Of The Isomerization Of Trans-3-Acetoxy-2-Bromocyclooctene, Virginia Hill Lewis Jan 1972

The Study Of The Isomerization Of Trans-3-Acetoxy-2-Bromocyclooctene, Virginia Hill Lewis

University of the Pacific Theses and Dissertations

The isomerization of trans-3-acetoxy-2-bromocyclooctene (trans-1) to cis-3-acetoxy-2-bromocyclooctene (cis-1) was studied, trans-3- Methoxy-2-bromocyclooctene (trans-2) was used as a model compound for comparison. The rate of isomerization of both compounds increased tremendously with iodine (free radical catalysis) and decresed tremendously in the presence of hydroquinone (free radical inhibitor). This showed that the isomerizations of trans-1 and trans-2 are free radical catalyzed. It was anticipated that acetoxyl participation in trans-1, by stabilizing the free radical intermediate, would cause the rate of rearrangement of trans-1 to be much greater than the rate of rearrangement of trans-2. However, trans-1 iscented only about four times faster …

Studies Of Neutron Capture Produced Rare Gas Isotopes In Rocks And Minerals Containing Chlorine, Selenium And Tellurium, David E. Sinclair Jan 1972

Studies Of Neutron Capture Produced Rare Gas Isotopes In Rocks And Minerals Containing Chlorine, Selenium And Tellurium, David E. Sinclair

Masters Theses

"Noble gas mass spectrometry was used to study rare nuclear processes in terrestrial rocks and minerals. An excess of 36Ar was detected in a chlorine-rich rock. The excess 36Ar has been produced in rocks near the earth's surface due to capture of cosmic-ray-produced neutrons on 35Cl. Measurement of 36Ar formed by the 35Cl(n, γ)36Cl(β-)36Ar process makes possible a new method for determining the surface residence time of chlorine-rich minerals

Excess 82Kr and excess 83Kr were detected in selenium-rich ores. The excess 82Kr results from double beta …

Influence Of Weather On Movement And Habitat Use Of Hen Pheasants During Brood Rearing, James M. Ruth Jan 1972

Influence Of Weather On Movement And Habitat Use Of Hen Pheasants During Brood Rearing, James M. Ruth

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Pheasants survive in a wide range of yearly weather extremes but can be limited by certain short-term weather factors (Graham and Hosterburg 1948). Study of short-term weather conditions can therefore be important in understanding pheasant survival. Many studies have been done on yearly and seasonal effects of weather on pheasant production and survival. Bemitt and Terril (1940) reported on possible temperature factors in pheasant management in the north central area of the United States. Effects of weather on pheasant reproduction were studied by Buss and Swanson (1950) and Kozieky et al. (1955). MacKullan and Eherhardt (1953) studied the tolerance of …

Reports

Introduction: This report describes the fabrication and laboratory testing of a 1/12 scale model of the 5 branch converging manifold to be installed as a component of the Virginia Electric and Power Company 1974 extension of the Yorktown power station. The design of the manifold (see Fig. 1) was supplied by Brown & Root, Inc. The geometry of Branch number 1 as shown on Fig. 1 was modified slightly from the original design after conferring with Browth & Root, Inc. in order to facilitate the fabrication of this branch of the model. In addition to the fabrication of the manifold …

The 6300Å Predawn Enhancement: Excitation By Protoelectrons From The Magnetic Conjugate Point, Vincent B. Wickwar Jan 1972

The 6300Å Predawn Enhancement: Excitation By Protoelectrons From The Magnetic Conjugate Point, Vincent B. Wickwar

All Physics Faculty Publications

Incoherent scatter and tilting filter photometer data from Arecibo Observatory were combined to search for a contribution to the 6300 Å predawn enhancement due to impact excitation by photoelectrons from the magnetic conjugate point. Prior to about 105° conjugate solar zenith angle, calculations of the 6300 Å intensities due to dissociative recombination gave good agreement with the observed intensities. Then, with the arrival of conjugate photoelectrons (confirmed by plasma line enhancements), the observed intensities rose above the calculated, the difference increasing until a plateau was achieved at a conjugate solar zenith angle of about 95°. The difference or residual intensity …

Diffusion-Controlled Reaction Kinetics, David Peak, J W. Corbett Jan 1972

Diffusion-Controlled Reaction Kinetics, David Peak, J W. Corbett

All Physics Faculty Publications

The theory of diffusion-controlled correlated reaction kinetics is developed for the radiation boundary condition (RBC) at the reaction surface. Limited only by the assumptions of purely radial spatial dependence, of a spherical reaction surface, and of continuum diffusion, these results comprise a complete solution for these kinetics. The limiting solutions are obtained for the case of the Smoluchowski boundary condition (SBC) at the reaction surface; numerical solutions are presented, as are the analytic forms of certain limiting cases. The initial recovery for the RBC is linear in time, whereas for the SBC it is well known to be proportional to …

Water Resources Planning To Satisfy Growing Demand In An Urbanizing Agricultural Region, Thomas C. Anderson Jan 1972

Water Resources Planning To Satisfy Growing Demand In An Urbanizing Agricultural Region, Thomas C. Anderson

Reports

Although it is condeded that an adequate supply of water is essential to economic growth and development, what constitutes an "adequate" supply is often controversial and difficult to determine. The problem can be solved by applying basin economic concepts: determining the value of water be estimating its supply and demand. This report demonstrates one method for doing this. The theory of the demand for irrigation water and its empirical application are discussed. An example problem based on data from one of the sub-regions of the study area (the Jordan River Basin of Utah) is presented to illustrate the method. The …

Calibration Of Parshall Flumes With Non-Standard Entrance Transitions, Cheng-Lung Chen, Calvin G. Clyde, Min-Shoung Chu, Chi-Yuan Wei Jan 1972

Calibration Of Parshall Flumes With Non-Standard Entrance Transitions, Cheng-Lung Chen, Calvin G. Clyde, Min-Shoung Chu, Chi-Yuan Wei

Reports

The 9-ince and 18-inch Parshall flumes with the throat section installed level with the bottom of an incoming pipe were tested. The measured discharges for given flow depths (free flow) or differences in flow depths (submerged flow) were found to deviate quite significantly fromt he computed standard Parshall flume disharges at both low and high flow rates. New empirical formulats have been developed to take such deviations into account. It is noted that values of the coefficients and exponents contained in the new formulas depend on the throat size of the flume and the slope of the incoming pipe. Calibration …

The Hydraulics Of Waste Stabilization Ponds, Gary Z. Watters Jan 1972

The Hydraulics Of Waste Stabilization Ponds, Gary Z. Watters

Reports

The treatment efficiency of waste stabilization ponds depends primarily on the biological factors of type of waste and organic loading. However, the biological activity in a pond is greatly influenced by the environmental conditions of temperature, wind, sunlight, and the hydraulic flow patterns. In the past little attention has been given to the hydraulic characteristics of waste stabilization ponds such as the gross flow patterns within stabilization ponds as affected by the shape of the pond or lagoon, the presence of dead spaces, and positioning of inlets and outlets and the degree of density stratification. These hydraulic flow characteristics will …

The principal objectives of AWRA are stated briefly as follows: …

Studies To Develop And Investigate An Inverse Formulation For Numerically Solving Three-Dimensional Free Surface Potential Fluid Flows, Roland W. Jeppson Jan 1972

Studies To Develop And Investigate An Inverse Formulation For Numerically Solving Three-Dimensional Free Surface Potential Fluid Flows, Roland W. Jeppson

Reports

An inverse formulation is developed for solving three-dimensional potential fluid flows which considers the magnitudes of the cartesian coordinates x, y, and z as the dependent variables in the space defined by the potential function and two mutually orthogonal stream surface functions whose intersection defines the physical space streamlines. This formulation reverses the usual role of the variables. In this inverse space irregular boundaries, with unknown position in the physical space, such as free surfaces become plane boundaries, and the space of most potential flow problems is a parallelepiped. The basin partial differential equations resulting from this formulation are nonlinear …
