Time-Dependent Ionization Equilibrium And Line Radiation Under Flarelike Conditions, Menas Kafatos, W. H. Tucker
Time-Dependent Ionization Equilibrium And Line Radiation Under Flarelike Conditions, Menas Kafatos, W. H. Tucker
Mathematics, Physics, and Computer Science Faculty Articles and Research
The results of calculations for time-dependent ionization equilibrium and line emission are presented and compared with the values obtained under the assumption that steady-state conditions prevail. In the models considered, it is assumed that the electron density is constant (=10^3 cm^-3) and that the temperature increases by a factor of 10 from 3 x 10^6 K on timescales ranging from 100 to 300 s and decays back to 3 x 10^6 K on a timescale ranging from 600 to 1400 s. Ions of oxygen and silicon are considered, and it is found that the spectrum is softer during the rise …

Les Surfaces Cuticulaires Des Gnathopodes De Deux Crustacés Amphipodes: Niphargus (Gammaridé Hypogé) Et Gammarus (Gammaridé Épigé), Evelyne Sellem
International Journal of Speleology
Niphargus virei and N. schellenbergi (hypogean Gammarids) as also Gammarus pulex pulex (epigean Gammarid) show on the Gn1 and Gn2 of both sexes ornamented areas which were studied with a scanning electron microscope. The ornamentations are built up of teeth. These are simple in Gammarus pulex pulex and present a sexual dimorphism on the meropodite. In N. schellenbergi and N. virei they are as often as not grouped by three. In Orchestia (Talitrid) the teeth have their bases fusioned which forms pectinate scales showing a sexual dimorphism. Outside these areas, the gnathopod cuticle of N. virei, N. schellenbergi and …

Temperature And Relative Humidity Responses Of Two Texas Cave-Adapted Millipedes, Cambala Speobia (Cambalida: Cambalidae) And Speodesmus Bicornourus (Polydesmida: Vanhoeffeniidae), Eddie Bull, Robert W. Mitchell
International Journal of Speleology
The temperature and relative humidity preferences and tolerances of two Texas species of cave-adapted millipedes, Cambala speobia (Chamberlin) and Speodesmus bicornourus Causey, were studied. Both species showed gross preferences when tested in gradient chambers for temperatures and relative humidities approximating those of their cave environments. But C. speobia, the less adapted species morphologically, was the more selective of the two species for such conditions. S. bicornourus was far less tolerant of elevated temperatures and reduced relative humidities than was C. speobia. Discussed is a possible reason why a terrestrial troglobite like S. bicornourus would combine intolerance with a …
Les Japygidés Cavernicoles De La Faune Française, Jean Pagés
Les Japygidés Cavernicoles De La Faune Française, Jean Pagés
International Journal of Speleology
Twelve species of Japygids are cites from France. Six are known with certitude from caves. None of them shows any morphological modification which can be ascribed to cavernicolous life. All of them are found outside caves except Metaj. doderoi Silv. which is known from a unique female from Castel Mouly cave. To take into account the selection which seems to occur among the species, the term “subtroglophile” is proposed to include those which can be found in the caves.

International Journal of Speleology
The amount of food available to the subterranean mysid, Lepidomysis longipes (Pillai & Mariamma, 1964) in its habitat has been calculated and analysed. Lepidomysis appears to feed mainly on decaying vegetable matter. Lepidomysis shows many modifications in its external morphology. Consequently, the mode of feeding has undergone some marked changes from that of its epigean relatives. L. longipes is a discontinuous feeder.

Reaction Of Aqueous Catechol Solutions With Minerals, Boonthong Poocharoen
Dissertations and Theses
The effectiveness of catechol, an aromatic vic-diol, in dissolving silicate minerals was studied. A synthetic amorphous magnesium trisilicate, Mg₂Si₃O₈∙5H₂O, as well as the minerals olivine, sepiolite, diopside, augite, and enstatite were used to react with catechol in slightly acidic, basic, and neutral solutions. It was found, depending on the solvent used, that 33-52, 8-17, 14-30, 5-11, 3-6, and 0.5-1 % of the minerals dissolved, respectively.
The reaction with Mg₂Si₃0₈·5H₂0 resulted in the formation of crystals of magnesium tris (catecholato) siliconate nonahydrate Mg[Si(Cat)₃]∙9H₂0. Dehydration of the crystals at room temperature resulted in the loss of 6 moles of water to form …
