The History Of The Stream Preservation Movement In Arkansas, Rex Moreland Terry Dec 1971

The History Of The Stream Preservation Movement In Arkansas, Rex Moreland Terry

Honors Theses

The history of Arkansas' Stream Preservation movement is not a long one, because only in the recent past have Arkansans taken a serious look at the long term effects of such things as damming streams and clearing land.

The core of the movement for stream preservation centers around the Buffalo River, in the Northwest Arkansas Ozarks. Because of this, the bulk of this paper will be devoted to the Buffalo.

A New Test For Normality, Richard Leroy Roller Dec 1971

A New Test For Normality, Richard Leroy Roller

All Master's Theses

This paper presents a new test for normality which is based on a complete characterization of the normal distribution. Motivation for the test is given in terms of a proof of this characterization. The test is derived and evaluated by computer-simulated sampling from alternative distributions. The empirical powers of the test generated from such samplings are tabled and compared to nine commonly used tests. Evaluation of the proposed test is discussed and further avenues of investigation are suggested.

A Kinetic Study Pertaining To The Enzymatic Reduction Of Pyruvate By Lactate Dehydrogenase, Ronald Floyd Tienhaara Dec 1971

A Kinetic Study Pertaining To The Enzymatic Reduction Of Pyruvate By Lactate Dehydrogenase, Ronald Floyd Tienhaara

All Master's Theses

The reduction of pyruvate as catalyzed by lactate dehydrogenase has been studied by monitoring the oxidation of DPNH (diphosphopyridine nucleotide) at 340 nm. The kinetic investigation was carried out in phosphate buffer at 25° C. Since pyruvate exists in equilibrium with the enolized and hydrated forms, a kinetic analysis was devised to determine the nature of the true substrate for the enzymatic process. Also, a comparative study was made involving two isozymes of lactate dehydrogenase. The catalytic effectiveness of these isozymes was studied as a function of pH and substrate concentration.

Even-Parity Lattice Resonances And Anharmonicity In Ki: Ag+, Roger D. Kirby Nov 1971

Even-Parity Lattice Resonances And Anharmonicity In Ki: Ag+, Roger D. Kirby

Roger Kirby Publications

We report here the observation of four impurity-induced lattice resonances in KI:Ag+. In addition to the well-known T1u symmetry resonant mode at 17.3 cm-1, we have observed two even-parity resonant modes of A1g and Eg symmetries at 25 and 16.35 cm-1, respectively, and a T1u symmetry gap mode at 86.2 cm-1. The two even-parity modes were detected using far-infrared spectroscopic techniques with the sample in an external electric field. The field induces a strong mixing of the modes of opposite parity and results in large field-induced shifts. The Eg symmetry resonance has also been seen in the Raman spectrum of …

Mössbauer-Effect Studies Of The Phase Transitions In Antiferroelectric Pbzro₃ And Ferroelectric Pbti₀.₀₂Zr₀.₈O₃, James P. Canner, C. M. Yagnik, Robert Gerson, William Joseph James Nov 1971

Mössbauer-Effect Studies Of The Phase Transitions In Antiferroelectric Pbzro₃ And Ferroelectric Pbti₀.₀₂Zr₀.₈O₃, James P. Canner, C. M. Yagnik, Robert Gerson, William Joseph James

Physics Faculty Research & Creative Works

The Mössbauer spectra were studied for the antiferroelectric compound PbZrO3 and for the closely related ferroelectric PbTi0.2Zr0.8O3. In both cases, a substitution of 5-mol% BiFeO3 was made to permit the Mössbauer measurements. Little difference was found in the isomer shift in these compounds, whether they were in the ferroelectric, antiferroelectric, or cubic state, indicating that the bonding character is not affected by the transitions among the states. There was a pronounced and approximately equivalent dip in the recoil-free fraction at the Curie points of both the antiferroelectric and ferroelectric materials, associated with …

Survival Of Some Freshwater Fishes In The Alkaline Eutrophic Waters Of Nebraska, D. B. Mccarraher Nov 1971

Survival Of Some Freshwater Fishes In The Alkaline Eutrophic Waters Of Nebraska, D. B. Mccarraher

Nebraska Game and Parks Commission: Staff Research Publications

Of 14 species of freshwater fishes held in cages in one or more of 13 alkaline lakes and ponds in Nebraska, few species survived more than a month where carbonate alkalinity, mostly as compounds of Na2C03 and KC03, was above 300 mg/liter. Of the 14 species tested, Sacramento perch (Archoplites interruptus), fathead minnow (Pimephales promelas), northern pike (Esox lucius), and the black bullhead (lctalurus melas), were the most tolerant of alkaline environments. Most centrachid fishes except A. interruptusand the green sunfish (Lepomis cyanel!us), did …

The Reduction Of Carbonyl Compounds By Sodium Naphthalenide, James Stinnett Nov 1971

The Reduction Of Carbonyl Compounds By Sodium Naphthalenide, James Stinnett

Masters Theses & Specialist Projects

The purpose of this investigation was to study the reactions of sodium naphthaienide with various aromatic carbonyl compounds, particularly aromatic aldehydes and ketones. Although sodium naphthalenide was first investigated in 1936 by Scott et al, the synthetic utility of this alkali metal adduct in organic chemistry has only recently been explored. It was thought that sodium naphthalenide might provide a synthetic advantage, as compared to sodium metal solutions, in the reduction of carbonyl functions to their respective glycols and/or alcohols.

Thermionic Space Charge Oscillations, William Carl Nov 1971

Thermionic Space Charge Oscillations, William Carl

Masters Theses & Specialist Projects

Thermionic electrons emitted into a potential well will produce radiation, the frequency of which is determined by the transit time of the electrons. This paper investigates the case where radiation is produced by a vacuum tube in which two Pierce guns face each other, one acting as the emitter, the other acting as a reflector. Symmetry and the focusing of the electron beam by the Pierce guns make it possible to make an accurate determination of the electron transit time. Measurements showed that the period of the oscillation was 1.5 times the period required for an electron to traverse the …

Precambrian Geology Of The Central Nacimiento Mountains, Sandoval County, New Mexico, Kent Richard Reed Oct 1971

Precambrian Geology Of The Central Nacimiento Mountains, Sandoval County, New Mexico, Kent Richard Reed

Earth and Planetary Sciences ETDs

The oldest Precambrian rocks in the area of study are represented by abundant inclusions and schlieren of hornblendite, plagioclase-hornblende schist, and plagioclase-hornblende-biotite schist. These inclusions are remnants of a pre-batholithic metamorphic terrane.

The next oldest, and dominant rock in the central Nacimiento Mountains is gneiss that ranges in composition from quartz monzonite to granodiorite. Where strongly sheared, the rock is microcline-biotite-quartz-plagioclase schist. Gradational zones of schist within the gneiss were mapped separately. The gneiss and the schist are cut by metamorphosed spessartite dikes and by leucocratic dikes of various textures and compositions.

Intruding the gneiss in the southeastern part of …

Cellular Inactivation By Heavy Ions, Neutrons, And Pions, Robert Katz, S. C. Sharma, M. Hamayoonfar Oct 1971

Cellular Inactivation By Heavy Ions, Neutrons, And Pions, Robert Katz, S. C. Sharma, M. Hamayoonfar

Robert Katz Publications

The delta-ray theory of the inactivation of cells by energetic heavy ions describes cellular survival after heavy ion bombardment through a two-component survival model, in which 4 operational parameters (E0,m0, σ0, and κ) describe the response of a particular cellular variety in a particular ambient condition, for an arbitrary radiation environment. The quantities m and E0 are the extrapolation number and extrapolated D-37 dose of the survival curve after gamma-ray irradiation. The quantities σ0 and κ are found from the initial slope of survival curves after irradiation with ions of different LET, …

A Two-Layer Model Of The North Atlantic Thermocline, P. P. Niiler, Edward R. Simco, R. Larue Oct 1971

A Two-Layer Model Of The North Atlantic Thermocline, P. P. Niiler, Edward R. Simco, R. Larue

Faculty Articles

A two-layer model of mid-oceanic thermocline is developed, and a comparison of the depth and temperature of the thermocline in this model is made with a root-mean-square description of the hydrographic structure of the North Atlantic. It is shown that the Sverdrup balance is maintained within the rms errors, and the entire estimated heat flux from the atmosphere is used to produce the observed density changes along the path of persistent flow.
