Second- And Third-Order Elastic Constants Of Aluminum And Lead, Tetsuro Suzuki

The second- and third-order elastic constants of Al and Pb are calculated as the second and third derivatives of the binding energy with respect to the finite deformation parameter. The binding energy is derived from a local pseudopotential by use of second-order perturbation theory. It is shown that the binding energy satisfied not only the diagonal equilibrium condition, but also the off-diagonal equilibrium condition, i.e., the first derivative of the binding energy with respect to a volume change as well as with respect to shear deformations is zero. Magnetostriction And Magnetic Breakdown In Cadmium, J. M. Carter, Don M. Sparlin

Studies of the monotonic magnetostriction of cadmium at 4.2 °K in applied magnetic fields to 70 kG have shown that the angular variation of an extremal point Hm is proportional to secθ. The magnitude of Hm is in close agreement with the onset of a breakdown orbit γ13 observed for the applied field within 35 °of the c axis. The range of observation of Hm coincides with the range of the orbit γ. © 1971 The American Physical Society.

Electron-Impact Excitation Of Auto-Ionizing Levels In Cesium, Yu Bong Hahn, Kaare J. Nygaard

Auto-ionizing states in Cs between 12 and 20 eV have been studied by electron impact. The retarding-potential-difference method was used to obtain an electron beam with energy spread of about 0.1 eV. To determine the threshold energies, inelastically scattered electrons were analyzed by the trapped-electron method. We have been able to identify about 20 levels, and the agreement with spectroscopic data is excellent. A peak appearing at 12.80 eV is probably due to the quartet states observed by Feldman and Novick. © 1971 The American Physical Society.

Absolute Excitation Cross Sections Of He+ In 20-100-Kev He+-He Collisions Using Energy-Loss Spectrometry, D. R. Schoonover, John T. Park

Application of positive-ion energy-loss spectrometry has been extended to include experimental determination of absolute excitation cross sections of ground-state helium ions. Helium ion-atom collisions were studied for impact energies ranging between 20-100 keV, in 10-keV intervals. The data were taken with an apparatus resolution between 0.6-0.8 eV full width at half-maximum (FWHM). Cross sections for transitions from ground state to the second and third principal quantum levels of the ion plotted as a function of impact energy were still rapidly increasing at 100 keV. The cross sections at this energy were (1.64 ± 0.28) x 10-18 cm2 for He+(1s122)→He+ (n=2) …

This is a report of the world accomplished and results obtained under a 2-year contract. The primary objective of the Wasatch Weather Modification Project is to assess the effectiveness of selected procedures for increasing the water supply in the Wasatch Mountains by cloud seeding. As part of this overall objective, an airborne seeding experiment has been conducted for two winter seasons. Preliminary results of this experiment indicate a positive seeding effect within and on the periphery of the designated target area. Linear combination of atomic orbital—molecular orbital cluster calculations using extended Hückel theory suggest that the interstitial carbon atom in diamond prefers an "interstitialcy" configuration. The predicted minimum-energy configuration changes with charge state, providing a possible example of the Bourgoin mechanism for "athermal" migration of the interstitial in the presence of ionizing radiation.

This study represents the first phase of an investigation to develop an operational simulation model of the point snowmelt process based on a time increment of one day or less. Mathematical relationships for various phenomena involved in the snowmelt process were proposed and tested. These relationships were combined into a model which is applicable to any geographic locations by determining appropriate constants for certain relationships. The model was synthesized on a hybrid computer and calibrated using field data from the Central Sierra Snow Laboratory. It was then tested with data from other well instrumented locations. Methods are developed and defined for obtaining numerical solutions to three-dimensional, free surface, invisvid, incompressible fluid flows and three-dimensional free surface Darcian flow in porous media. Since those boundaries consisting of free surface are unknown a priori, a solution to the space boundary value problem resulting from a formulation in the physical space is very difficult, if not impossible, to obtain. Consequently, the methods described herein are based on a formulation in a space defined by a potential function and two mutually orthogonal stream surfaces whose intersections define the streamlines of the flow. Perturbations on the earth’s magnetic field may coincide with the existence of groundwater. Theoretical calculations are made showing how and to what extent this effect may exist. The suggestion is also made that water dowsers may get a dowsing reaction as a result of entering a change in magnetic gradient. Tests were conducted to determine the statistical significance of dowsing reactions obtained by separate individuals dowsing in a common test area. Approximately 150 people participated in the experiment over a period of one year. Chi-square tests showed considerable statistical significance. The Great Salt Lake Desert, located in the southwest corner of the State of Utah"is a very dry region with sparse population and relatively small scattered areas of development. Since only a meager amount of hydrologic data has been collected and compiled for this relatively undeveloped area, the inventory presented herein is but a general appraisal of hydrologic conditions. Because of the small amount of development that has taken place and the general lack of hydrologic data, a water budget analysis is included for the Tooele Valley only.

Solutions are obtained to the problem of steady-state partially saturated infiltration of moisture applied over a horizontal source circle which moved through homogeneous soils toward a water table. A commonly accepted relationship between relative permeability and capillary pressure has been utilized in conjunction wit Darcy’s law to formulate the mathematical model. "Topological spaces are characterized by the algebraic and topological structures of their classes of continuous selfmaps. The problem of determining the topology of a set given certain classes of multifunctions or relations is considered. The algebraic structure of the upper semicontinuous multifunctions is shown to determine the topology of T₁ spaces. "A new method for obtaining the cross section for photoionization of photoexcited cesium is presented. The salient feature of this experiment is to use three crossed beams, i.e., two light beams intersecting a beam of cesium atoms. The cross section is determined by counting the ions produced by the two step process: Cs (6S) + h[upsilon]₁ --> Cs (6P) ; Cs (6P) + [upsilon]₂ --> Cs⁺ + e⁻ The relative cross section for the second step has been obtained from threshold (5060 Å) to 2500 Å. "Zinc, lead and minor copper-bearing manto-type and vein- type deposits occur in Paleozoic sedimentary rocks adjoining the Tres Hermanas quartz monzonite stock, Luna County, New Mexico. In an attempt to prove or disprove a possible genetic relationship between these mineral deposits and the stock, 99 half-mile or closer orthogonal grid samples from the stock and 22 soil samples from a connecting alluvial area to the north were analysed by atomic absorption technique for trace contents of zinc, lead and copper. Much information has been obtained on the orientation of unsymmetrical reagents about substituted allenes. Although hydrogen halide addition to 1,2-propadiene yields 2-halopropenes,^20,31 it has been ample demonstrated, at least in the case of halogenation and oxymercuration of the 1,2-alkyl substituted allenes, that the attacking electrophile ends up in the product attached to the central carbon of the original allenic system. ^{20,22,31,34,38,39,40} Using optically active 1,3-dimethylallene(15) it has been shown that the bromination and oxymercuration of 15 is stereospecific. ^22,39Knowledge of the absolute configurations of the optically active addition products have made it possible to propose a plausible mechanism …
