Extension Of Belyaev-Zelivinski Method Of Rotation As Intrinsic Nuclear Excitation, Jeffrey W. Gray Jan 1973

Extension Of Belyaev-Zelivinski Method Of Rotation As Intrinsic Nuclear Excitation, Jeffrey W. Gray

Graduate Dissertations and Theses

The method of Belyaev and Zelevinski for handling the rotational collective states of deformed nuclei has been extended. It is shown how a [J(J+1)]2 term naturally occurs in the energy spectrum of a rotational band for even-even nuclei. This is accomplished by modifying the assumption that Belyaev and Zelevinski imposed on their |n> states. This leads to a definite relationship between the coefficient of the J(J+1) and [J(J+1)]2 terms in the energy spectrum. This technique is applied to a single isolated j-level and to an arbitrary level scheme.

Polarographic Trace Analysis Of Copper, Lead And Cadmium, Donald Paul Jepson Jan 1973

Polarographic Trace Analysis Of Copper, Lead And Cadmium, Donald Paul Jepson

University of the Pacific Theses and Dissertations

The area of study for this project was the development of an accurate, reliable, and inexpensive method of trace analysis for copper, cadmium, and lead in foods. AT this time, the Association of Official Analytical Chemists Manual, eleventh edition, (4) has only official and recognized methods of analysis for copper (25.023), cadmium (25.018), and lead (25.041). In general, these procedures are long and tedious. The digestions involved often require many hours and are quite dangerous due to leakage of metallic and organometallic fumes from the digestion apparatus. The official methods of analysis for these elements require a very large outlay …

Logical Transition From Magnetic Poles To Current Loops, H. E. Mccloud Jan 1973

Logical Transition From Magnetic Poles To Current Loops, H. E. Mccloud

Journal of the Arkansas Academy of Science

Consideration of the relationship between the magnetic field produced by a magnetic shell and that produced by a current loop requires the evaluation of the line integral ɸH̅ • dl̅, where a portion of the path must cross the dipole layer. The correct line integral to be evaluated must be ɸB̅ • dl̅. The evaluation of this integral leads immediately to the correct Maxwell equation in ∆ x H̅. Gaussian units are used.

Hydrogeology Of A Sanitary Landfill, Mandan, North Dakota, Raymond D. Butler

Theses and Dissertations

The data from this study can be applied to much of southwestern North Dakota because the geologic and climatic conditions are similar.

The Mandan landfill is on the Heart River floodplain and next to the river on the north and steep valley wall on the south. The sanitary landfill bas been used for over 20 years.

The only pre-Pleistocene unit exposed is the Cannonball Formation, which is interbedded sand, silt, and clay. Quaternary units consist of till, fluvial sand, silt, clay, and gravel, and eolian sand and silt.

A local flow system recharges on the upland next to the valley …

High- And Low-Sinuosity Stream Deposits Of The Sentinel Butte Formation (Paleocene) Mckenzie County, North Dakota, Victor B. Cherven Jan 1973

High- And Low-Sinuosity Stream Deposits Of The Sentinel Butte Formation (Paleocene) Mckenzie County, North Dakota, Victor B. Cherven

Theses and Dissertations

High-sinuosity channel deposits in the Sentinel Butte Formation occur as elongate, tabular beds of sand that fine upward from an erosional base. The sand beds contain epsilon cross-stratification, within which stratification changes upward from large-scale trough crossstratification to horizontal stratification and small-scale crossstratification, indicating upward decrease in flow regime due to accretion of laterally-migrating point bars. Inset in the sand beds are channelplug deposits that are narrow and arcuate in map view and asymmetrically trough shaped in cross-section, and consist of sandy silt and clay. Lowsinuosity channel deposits occur as elongate, trough-shaped sand beds that fine upward from a deeply-channeled …

Grey Kangaroo Management Programme, Department Of Agriculture, Western Australia Jan 1973

Grey Kangaroo Management Programme, Department Of Agriculture, Western Australia

Journal of the Department of Agriculture, Western Australia, Series 4

The Grey Kangaroo Management Programme, introduced in 1971 by the Department of Fisheries and Fauna, is designed to ensure the long-term conservation of the grey kangaroo, while at the same time recognising the right of the landholder to protect his primary production from damage.

One of the points which has arisen after examination of the programme is that some individual farmers are not fully aware of the requirements of the regulations.

On the Eradu sandplain no response to super for either Unicrop or Wheat. On the Watheroo yellow sandplain (73M015) the two lupin cultivers and the wheat gave different responses. High Super Bank (>1 OOOkg/ha) …

Mando : A Computer Program For Symbolic Manipulation Of Differential Operators Generating Continuous Transformations, David Kenneth Davison Jan 1973

Mando : A Computer Program For Symbolic Manipulation Of Differential Operators Generating Continuous Transformations, David Kenneth Davison

University of the Pacific Theses and Dissertations

The program MANDO efficiently performs computations involving pairs of operators, a single operator, and operators applied to functions, saving time and cost over pencil-·and-paper methods.

A versatile but compact data structure, defined under SPIT-BOL's facility for creation of datatypes, contains the operators (and functions) and provides a means for systematically referencing their relevant parts.

On input, functions and operators are written in a restricted but natural string format, for which the program can readily convert them to the internal data structure.

Central to the method of operation of the derivative routine is its ability to differentiate a function written as …

Les Populations Naturelles De Stanasellus Virei Dollfus (Crustacé Asellote Troglobie), Guy Magniez Jan 1973

Les Populations Naturelles De Stanasellus Virei Dollfus (Crustacé Asellote Troglobie), Guy Magniez

International Journal of Speleology

Many cavernicolous and phreatic localities are known for the species Stenasellus virei. Some of these, which harbor a rather abundant population have been studied for several years. The endemic populations from permanent waters of some fossil karstic systems seem to have an abnormal composition. They include especially large individuals (juvenile stages being rare). They differ from the phreatic populations, which exhibit a normal distribution in size groups with a normal percentage of juveniles. These differences in the structure of populations may result from physical differences between the habitat in free waters of caves and in phreatic water, and from …

The Evolution Of The Eastern North American Isopods Of The Genus Asellus (Crustacea: Asellidae) Part Ii, Laurence E. Fleming Jan 1973

The Evolution Of The Eastern North American Isopods Of The Genus Asellus (Crustacea: Asellidae) Part Ii, Laurence E. Fleming

International Journal of Speleology

This paper is the second in the three part series dealing with the evolution of the North American isopods of the genus Asellus. The generic status of Asellus is discussed with emphasis placed on the newly proposed genera of Henry and Magniez (1968). Use is made of comparative anatomical and where feasible statistical methods during this investigation. The first, shorter portion of the study deals with the presentation of evidence supporting the viewpoint that if "Pseudobaicalasellus” is to be considered a valid genus then it must include the members of the Cannulus Group of Steeves (1965). The …

Feeding Behavior Of The Salamander Gyrinophilus Porphyriticus In Caves, David C. Culver Jan 1973

Feeding Behavior Of The Salamander Gyrinophilus Porphyriticus In Caves, David C. Culver

International Journal of Speleology

The feeding responses of salamander larvae (Gyrinophilus porphyriticus) from caves in the Powell Valley in Virginia were investigated in the laboratory. The larvae locate prey by mechanoreception and capture the prey by a rapid sucking action, much like cave-limited salamanders do. Feeding success is greater with the isopod Asellus recurvatus (about 90 per cent) than with the amphipod Crangonyx antennatus (about 50 per cent), and this largely accounts for the higher frequency of A. recurvatus taken in choice experiments. G. porphyriticus readily ingested the unfamiliar isopod Lirceus usdagalun, but it took four weeks before it was digested …
