Temperature Preference Responses Of Some Aquatic, Cave-Adapted Crustaceans From Central Texas And Northeastern México, William R. Elliott, Robert W. Mitchell Jan 1973

Temperature Preference Responses Of Some Aquatic, Cave-Adapted Crustaceans From Central Texas And Northeastern México, William R. Elliott, Robert W. Mitchell

International Journal of Speleology

The temperature preference responses of five species of troglobite crustaceans were studied in a 15°-30°C gradient. Stygonectes hadenoecus, S. russelli and Asellus reddelli had no discernible temperature preferenda. Speocirolana bolivari had a weak preference for 20-30°C. Cirolanides texensis had a pronounced preference for 20-30°C, temperatures much warmer than that of its habitat. The lack of temperature preferenda in three species agrees with the hypothesis that imprisoned troglobites tend to lose responses to those environmental variables which are constant in caves. S. bolivari may retain its temperature selectivity because of a slow rate of cave-adaptation. It is hypothised that C. …

Fluorescent Dye Determination Of Groundwater Movement And Contamination In Permeable Rock Strata, Charles P. Giammona Jan 1973

Fluorescent Dye Determination Of Groundwater Movement And Contamination In Permeable Rock Strata, Charles P. Giammona

International Journal of Speleology

A preliminary inquiry to the extent and boundaries of subterranean waterways within the Mystery Cave System was explored. Rhodamine WT dye in 500 ml quantities was used in fluormetry determinations of surface flow to ground water basins. A Turner Model 111 fluorometer was utilized for detection purposes powered by a portable 12 volt, 220 amp hour battery-inverter system. It was shown that water entered underground passageways through sinkholes or highly creviced limestone/dolomite rock strata and reappeared several kilometres downstream. The outflow appears in the form of “springs”. The possibility exists that contaminated surface water may seep through the soil for …

Observations Sur La Faune Aquatique Souterraine De Cuba, L. Botosaneanu

International Journal of Speleology

A short account on some achievements of the cubano-romanian biospeleological expeditions to Cuba in the study of the aquatic subterranean faunas. The following divisions of the aquatic subterranean realm are reviewed together with their most characteristic faunal elements: “guano pools” and rimstone pools in the vadose zone of the caves; underground streams; water table (and other) lakes in the caves; “pozzos” carved in the limestone, and “grietas” which are vertical clefts in the limestone of marine terraces, giving access to fresh- or to brackish water; the interstitial of the marine beaches; the underflow of running waters. At present, thorough biospeleological …

Le Deuxième Colloque International Sur Les Genres Niphargus Et Gammarus - Lyon, 1973 Compte-Rendu De Travail Pour Niphargus, R. Ginet

International Journal of Speleology

Following the First Colloquium held at Verona in 1969, it was planned to hold at Lyon in July, 1973, the Second International Colloquium dealing with the genus Niphargus and also with the genus Gammarus. As subject matter in discussions dealing with the first of these genera, the meeting was devoted mainly the balancing the various viewpoints (based on the European approach) and initiating a collective study of the systematics of these hypogean Amphipoda. The systematics are currently quite confused. Several modifications of the propositions of the Colloquium at Verona (published in 1972) were discussed. A third Colloquium, with the same …

A New Troglobitic Isopod Of The Genus Lirceus (Asellidae) From Southwestern Virginia, With Notes On Its Ecology And Additional Cave Records For The Genus In The Appalachians, John R. Holsinger, Thomas E. Bowman

International Journal of Speleology

Lirceus usdagalun new species, the first known troglobitic species of the genus, is described from three caves in Lee County, Virginia. The potential taxonomic value of the endopod tip of the male second pleopod, heretofore dismissed as a diagnostic character in this genus, is pointed out. Some general ecological data for the new species are presented, and cave records for other populations of Lirceus spp. from the Appalachians are given.

Ii Popolamento Di Ragni Nelle Grotte Tropicali (Araneae), Paolo Marcello Brignoli Jan 1973

Ii Popolamento Di Ragni Nelle Grotte Tropicali (Araneae), Paolo Marcello Brignoli

International Journal of Speleology

The so called “tropical” caves (most of which are also geographically “tropical”) are distinguished from the “temperate” caves by the much larger trophic resources. Spiders are common in both kinds of caves, but the groups present in one kind are mostly absent in the other (notwithstanding that many families are distributed over at least one temperate and one tropical region). As in all temperate caves more or less the same groups of spiders can be found, so the tropical caves have a typical spider fauna, composed of different groups (often also more than those present in the temperate caves). In …

Aspetti Ecologici Ed Evolutivi Del Popolamento Di Grotte Temperate E Tropicali: Osservazioni Sul Ciclo Biologico Di Alcune Specie Di Ptomaphagus (Coleoptera Catopidae), Valerio Sbordoni, Marina Cobolli-Sbordoni Jan 1973

Aspetti Ecologici Ed Evolutivi Del Popolamento Di Grotte Temperate E Tropicali: Osservazioni Sul Ciclo Biologico Di Alcune Specie Di Ptomaphagus (Coleoptera Catopidae), Valerio Sbordoni, Marina Cobolli-Sbordoni

International Journal of Speleology

Differences between tropical and temperate cave communities are an important topic in the actual biospeleological thinking. Among the most striking differences is the paucity of terrestrial troglobites in tropical caves. This fact may depend on the higher energy input into tropical caves which lessens the selection pressures for energy-economizing troglobite adaptations. Consequently evolutionary rates would be slowed in tropical caves and, in a date group, troglobites would appear later in such caves than in temperate ones with lower energy input. In order to investigate this point the authors studied the degree of adaptation to the cave environment in two species …

Considerazioni Sui Carabidi Carvernicoli Ed Engogei Dell'asia Minore (Coleoptera, Carabiae), Augusto Vigna Taglianti

International Journal of Speleology

The cavernicolous and endogeous Coleoptera Carabidae, actually (1972) known from the Anatolian peninsula (here considered together with Armenia, the Caucasus and the mountains of Lebanon), are examined and discussed. They belong to the tribes of Anillini, Trechini (Neotrechus, Aphaenops and Duvalius lines), Pterostichini, Molopini, Sphodrini. The cavernicolous and endogeous Anillini, Pterostichini and Sphodrini from this region have clear relations with the balkanic groups and may be considered as East-Mediterranean faunistic elements. On the contrary, the Trechini of the Neotrechus line are more related to the Caucasian groups, those of the so-called Aphaenops line are endemic of the Caucasus and of …

Stato Attuale Delle Conoscenze Sugli Histeridae Ipogei, Vincenzo Vomero

International Journal of Speleology

The author makes some considerations on troglobitic and endogeous world Histeridae. All these species present extreme reduction of eyes or are completely blind; all are wingless and only one is brachipterous. The Histeridae described here belong to the following genera: Speleacritus Jeannel and Spelaeabraeus Moro (Abraeinae), Sardulus Patrizi, Bacanius Le Conte, Troglobacanius Vomero and Geoculus Wenzel. (Dendrophilinae, Bacanius group). Finally some considerations on troglophylic and guanobitic Histeridae are made, reporting the recent discovery of a new genus and of some new species belonging to guanobitic biocoenosis of Mexican tropical caves.

Description And Origin Of Carbonate Minerals In The Upper And Lower Cherty Members Of The Biwabik Formation, Minnesota, Leslie R. Honeyman Jan 1973

Description And Origin Of Carbonate Minerals In The Upper And Lower Cherty Members Of The Biwabik Formation, Minnesota, Leslie R. Honeyman

Theses and Dissertations

This study was done for the Erie Hining Company after periodic problems with the quality of pellets from taconit2 of the Biwabik Formation had been linked to the presence of carbonate minerals. The carbonates found in the cherty members of the Precambrian Biwabik Formation are predominantly siderite, ankerite, and calcite. Siderite is the only primary carbonate mineral and occurs in three forms: nicrogranular, granular (oolitic), and crystalline aggregates (recrystallized). Ankerite is a secondary mineral occurring as crystalline aggregates and alteration rims on granular siderite. Calcite is found only in fractures and fault zones. Siderite formed from the original precipitate and …

Seismic Refraction Study Of Post-Pliocene Stratigraphy, Dismal Swamp, Virginia, William Brian Fraser Jan 1973

Seismic Refraction Study Of Post-Pliocene Stratigraphy, Dismal Swamp, Virginia, William Brian Fraser

OES Theses and Dissertations

This study examines Pliocene-Pleistocene lithostratigraphy and the Yorktown unconformity within the Dismal Swamp by means of remote sensing analysis, Wyrobek-Gardner seismic refraction profiling and split-spoon coring. Pre-Sangamon fluvial/tidal channel deposits are not present and the Yorktown unconformity dips irregularly southeastward at 0.35 meters/kilometer (2 feet/mile) from a high at 4 meters above sea level to a low of -1 meter (+12 to -2 ft) below sea level. The marker velocity for the Yorktown Formation is 1600 mps (5250 fps) and regression of seismic depths of the Yorktown Formation with corresponding split-spoon depths yields a high correlation. Short line upper layer …

The Consideration Of Some Aspects Of Two Methods Used To Study Ion Association, Richard Karl Gard Jan 1973

The Consideration Of Some Aspects Of Two Methods Used To Study Ion Association, Richard Karl Gard

Masters Theses

An investigation was made into the possibility of determining thermodynamic ion association equilibrium constants for salts important in the study of seawater using spectrophotometry and ion selective electrodes. Calcium sulfate was used as the test salt. The success of the spectrophotometric method was found to depend upon the choice of a suitable indicator and refinement of the proper instrumental techniques. The indicators investigated were 1-(2'-hydroxy-1'-benzeneazo)-2-hydroxynaphthalene, 1-(2'-hydroxy-5'-chloro-1'-benzeneazo)-2-hydroxynaphthalene, and ammonium purpurate (murexide). Ammonium purpurate was found to be the most suitable indicator. Spectra of these three indicators and their calcium complexes at pH 10 are included in the paper. The ion selective …

Mechanistic Studies Of Cobalt Super Nucleophiles, Audrey Yeh Ku Jan 1973

Mechanistic Studies Of Cobalt Super Nucleophiles, Audrey Yeh Ku

Masters Theses

A study was initiated on the hypothesis, by Ugi and co-workers, that cyclopropyl, cyclobutyl, and cyclopentyl electrophiles might undergo nucleophilic substitution reactions with retention of configuration.

A simple, high yield synthesis of both cis and trans-2-phenylcyclopropyl chlorides from styrene and chloroform is described. Reaction of each of these alkylating agents with the very nucleophilic cobaloxime super-nucleophile ultimately gave peroxy compounds which appear to arise from insertion of oxygen into the carbon-cobalt bond.

Neither trans-2-phenylcyclopentyl tosylate nor trans-2-phenylcyclohexyl tosylate would alkylate low valent cobaloximes under standard conditions.

A partial synthesis of the 2-phenylcyclobutyl tosylate is described along with suggestions for future …

A Study Of Organochlorine Insecticides In Freshwater Crayfish -- Analytical Problems And Biomonitoring Survey, Robert C. Vanderjack Jan 1973

A Study Of Organochlorine Insecticides In Freshwater Crayfish -- Analytical Problems And Biomonitoring Survey, Robert C. Vanderjack

Masters Theses

Crayfish were collected from 3 sites on Polecat Creek, Coles County, Illinois in early spring, early summer, and late summer of 1972. Pesticides were extracted from the crayfish tissue in a one step procedure utilizing a Florisil elution column. Analysis was by electron capture gas chromatography. Pesticide residues in the nannogram range were analyzed and background contamination was an important consideration. Sources of background contamination were investigated and teflon stopcocks, Florisil, and residues on “cleaned” glassware were found to be major contamination sources. Distilled water used in flushing glassware should also be considered a potential contamination source.

Distribution Of Foraminiferida In An Estuarine Marsh System, Charles Warren Norton Jan 1973

Distribution Of Foraminiferida In An Estuarine Marsh System, Charles Warren Norton

Dissertations, Theses, and Masters Projects

Foraminiferal faunas in marshes and distributary channels of the James River estuary, Virginia, disclose several facies. The channel facies, primarily Ammobaculites crassus, and A. sp. A, typical of estuaries in Chesapeake Bay and other brackish areas are readily distinguishable freom the march facies. Marshes are divisible laterally by changes in the relative proportions of marsh species such as Miliammina fusca, Ammoastuta salsa, and Haplophragmoides hancocki.Changes along the longitudinal estuarine salinity gradient are discernable in both tidal creeks and marsh. Channels exhibit a longitudinal gradient from a freshwater thecamoebinid facies through an upper and mid-estuarine Ammobaculites facies to a higher salinity …

Biology Of The Rock Crab, Cancer Irroratus Say, In Coastal Waters Of Virginia, Lewis Roller Shotton Jan 1973

Biology Of The Rock Crab, Cancer Irroratus Say, In Coastal Waters Of Virginia, Lewis Roller Shotton

Dissertations, Theses, and Masters Projects

The commercial seabass notting fishery and the trawl fishery in the Blackfish Bank area east of the entrance to Chincoteague Bay were used to study the biology of the rock crab, Cancer irroratus Say. Highest relative abundance of rock crabs occured in February, March, and April when coldest inshore (<30m) bottom water temperatures occurred. Relative abundance during all other months was extremely low. The apparent seasonal change in relative abundance may be due to an inshore-offshore seasonal migration of mature crabs following the seasonal inshore-offshore shift of colder bottom water. Male rock crabs grow to a significantly larger size than females. The carapace width range of males captured in the potting fishery was 66 to 141 mm; and 25 to 106 mm for females. In the trawl fishery the width range for males was 20 to 137 mm; and 22 to 102 mm for females. In both pot and trawl catches the male to female ratio was biased in favor of males. Males comprised 92% of the pot catch and 84% of all crabs captured by trawl. From August through December all crabs were in the hard shell intermolt stage. Small percentages of soft crabs occurred from January through June. Papershell crabs predominated in February, March and April. It is probable that most crabs molted in January and the process of exoskeleton hardening took several months. Ovigerous females were captured in seabass pots in April and June and in trawls from February through April. All ovigerous crabs were in hard shell condition. Gondal inspection of males and the presence of eggs on females indicated that rock crabs mature at a relatively small size (30 mm carapace width). Female rock crabs have a deeper body and wider abdomen than equivalent width males. Abdomen width grows more rapidly for females after the onset of sexual maturity than before. Mature females have a longer carapace than equivalent width males. Male and female regressions of chela length on carapace width could not be compared statistically but plots of the equations suggest no sexual difference. This dissertation is from the Joint Program Degree from the College of William & Mary and University of Virginia and awarded by the University of Virginia.

A Study To Improve Dissolved Oxygen Analysis Techniques To Facilitate Water Quality Field Survey Applications, R. W. Raible, M. K. Testerman Jan 1973

A Study To Improve Dissolved Oxygen Analysis Techniques To Facilitate Water Quality Field Survey Applications, R. W. Raible, M. K. Testerman

Arkansas Water Resources Center Technical Reports

This report describes studies made of the temperature characteristics of dissolved oxygen electrodes having a large surface area. Large area electrodes proved to have much longer lifetime between rejuvenations. Many measurements of dissolved oxygen in water need to be made in field situations where recalibration techniques would be difficult and where making temperature corrections is time consuming for operators who may be making numerous measurements. This study was directed toward design of a compensation circuit for a dissolved oxygen electrode which will give the best possible measurement over a large water temperature range of 5° - 35°C without the necessity …

A Eutrophication Model Of The White River Basin Above Beaver Reservoir In Northwest Arkansas, Robert A. Gearhart, Dee Mitchell, Louis Thibodeaux, Richard Meyers Jan 1973

A Eutrophication Model Of The White River Basin Above Beaver Reservoir In Northwest Arkansas, Robert A. Gearhart, Dee Mitchell, Louis Thibodeaux, Richard Meyers

Arkansas Water Resources Center Technical Reports

With national interest focused on man’s ever increasing degradation of the waters in this nation, it is clearly evident that an accurate assessment of all parameters influencing water quality needs to be made. Moreover, nutrient levels and budgets reflecting eutrophication trends are important parameters in the overall factors effecting water quality in lakes and reservoirs. The ability to predict future eutrophication levels will greatly enhance the retardation of the eutrophication process. Through mathematical simulation of this process, eutrophication can be analyzed and intelligent decisions regarding water quality management can be made.

Investigation Of Present Thermal Regime Of Missouri River In Missouri, James C. Maxwell Dec 1972

Investigation Of Present Thermal Regime Of Missouri River In Missouri, James C. Maxwell

Geosciences and Geological and Petroleum Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

The applicability of power spectral density techniques, Fourier series analysis, and linear regression to the mathematical modeling of river water temperature is demonstrated. Consideration is also given to the problem of estimating thermal inputs to rivers from man-made sources such as electrical power plants. First, power spectral density techniques are used in the time-series analysis of water temperature records which were taken from the Missouri River. Two spectral ranges are then studied from the standpoint of their applicability to (1) mathematical model building and (2) detection and identification of cyclic thermal inputs. Next, a Fourier regression fit to the time-series …

Electron Transmission Spectroscopy In Atomic Hydrogen, L. Sanche, Paul Burrow Dec 1972

Electron Transmission Spectroscopy In Atomic Hydrogen, L. Sanche, Paul Burrow

Paul Burrow Publications

An electron transmission experiment is used to study the resonances in the total scattering cross section of atomic hydrogen below the threshold of the first excited state. The three lowest resonances, designated 1S, 3P, and 1D, are observed and their energies and decay widths are found to be in good agreement with the values predicted theoretically using close coupling with correlation.
