Synthetic Approaches To Certain Acenapthalene Drivatives, Douglas Jeffrey Binder
Synthetic Approaches To Certain Acenapthalene Drivatives, Douglas Jeffrey Binder
Honors Theses
The purpose of this investigation is the synthesis of bis- acenaphth- (1, 2a)- acenaphthene. The experimental procedures used generally follow those of previous workers. The use of 1, 8- dibromonaphthalene is necessary throughout the synthesis. The preparation used follows that of letsinger, after a preferred synthesis of 8- bromo- 1- naphthotic acid. The latter compound reacted via a modified Hunsdiecker reaction to yield 1, 8- dibromo- naphthalene. Other approaches tried never seemed to result in improved yields, or were successful. Besides this approach to 1, 8- dibromonaphthalene, an attempt to circumvent its need has been made by running a dilute …
1-3 Dipolar Cycloadditions Of Nitrile Ylides, Steven Paul Braff
1-3 Dipolar Cycloadditions Of Nitrile Ylides, Steven Paul Braff
Honors Theses
1-3 dipolar cycloaddition is the union of a 1-3 dipole, a-b-c, with a system containing a multiple bond, d-e, to form a five membered ring. In this scheme, center c contains an electron sextet, and concommitant positive charge, while center c contains an unshared pair of electrons and is the anionic center of the dipole. In the cycloaddition reaction, the 1-3 dipole and the multiple bond system (called the dipolarophile), collapse to form a five membered ring with loss of all formal charges. All together, eighteen 1-3 dipolar systems have been mentioned. The synthetic potential with respect to heterocyclic adducts …

The Developement [Sic] Of Phosphorometric, Fluorometric And Absorption Analyses For The Measurement Of Carbamates And Carbamic Acids As An Explanation Of Carbon Dioxide Transport In Blood, Edward Theodore Gray
Honors Theses
Phosphorometric, flourometric, and absorption analyses have been developed for the measurement of amino acids, carbamic acids, and carbamates. The absorption analysis may be done in any solvent while the other two methods are limited to non-re-emitting solvents. Water is not excluded in any of the analyses. A carbamate or carbamic acid can be detected even in the presence of amino acids as low as 0.5%, with an overall accuracy of ± 0.3)%. Tentative assignments have been made for the n, π* direct triplet excitation bands for the carbonyls of glycine and its carbamic acid, acetyl chloride, ethyl acetate, and acetamide. …
Some Aspects Of Quantum Mechanics In Chemical Theory, Thomas Freeman Babson
Some Aspects Of Quantum Mechanics In Chemical Theory, Thomas Freeman Babson
Honors Theses
The physics of microscopic phenomena is called quantum mechanics. When quantum mechanics is extended to the macroscopic scale, the classical macroscopic physics results. Atomic interactions such as the formation of bonds between atoms falls into the range of physics described by quantum mechanics. Because of the interest of a chemist in such interatomic effects, it seems reasonable that a chemist would be interested in quantum mechanics because it is the physics governing these effects. The point of this thesis is to present some of those aspects of quantum mechanics that are directly applicable to molecular systems and that can aid …
Research Project For Undergraduates: Ionic Thermoconductivity In Dielectrics, Richard M. Fuller, Robert Fuller
Research Project For Undergraduates: Ionic Thermoconductivity In Dielectrics, Richard M. Fuller, Robert Fuller
Robert G. Fuller Publications
Research projects for undergraduates should satisfy several conditions with regards to the physical insight, experimental manipulation, data analyses, and time for the experimental run that are required of the students. These conditions are satisfied by the study of dipole relaxations in dielectric materials using the method of ionic thermocurrents (ITC). ITC can be used to determine the concentration, activation energy, and relaxation time of dipoles in a dielectric. The necessary equipment and some possible research projects are discussed.

The Guide and the Questionnaire were developed from …
The Development And Constitutionality Of The 1971 Delaware Coastal Zone Act, Francis Cameron
The Development And Constitutionality Of The 1971 Delaware Coastal Zone Act, Francis Cameron
Marine Affairs Theses and Major Papers
In June 1971, the Delaware Legislature passed the Delaware Coastal Zone Act that barred heavy manufacturing industry from locating in an area one to six miles deep along the state's 115 mile coastline. The act created a State Coastal Zone Industrial Control Board to hear appeals from decisions of the State Planner. In addition, the act prohibited the construction in the bay of marine terminals for the transshipment of liquid and solid bulk materials of any substance, (specifically aimed at offshore oil and coal transfer) from vessels to onshore facilities. The law's immediate effect was to block several hundred million …

Oil Pollution And The Coastal State, J. T. O'Brien
Oil Pollution And The Coastal State, J. T. O'Brien
Marine Affairs Theses and Major Papers
It will be the purpose of this paper to pose and answer this question...How has the legal competence of a coastal state been strengthened with respect to that state's ability to prevent marine oil pollution? The question by implication presupposes that a certain change in legal competence is in fact occurring. The legal and historical baseline from which to gauge this gradual change will be established by reviewing past milestones in oil pollution law. A closer examination will then be made of recent evolutionary changes in both international and national oil pollution law subsequent to the Torrey Canyon Disaster of …

Electrical Sensor Of Plane Coordinates, George S. Hurst, James E. Parks
Physics and Astronomy Faculty Patents
An inexpensive electrical sensor of plane coordinates employs juxtaposed sheets of conducting material having electrical equipotential lines extending across each sheet and arranged normal to each other. A probe upon touching each sheet at a selected intersection of the equipotential lines causes separate signals to be applied to one or more conventional information-indicating units.
Isopathic Graphs And Airport Graphs, Kim T. Rawlinson
Isopathic Graphs And Airport Graphs, Kim T. Rawlinson
Mathematics & Statistics ETDs
This paper explores two kinds of graphs, isopathic graphs and air port graphs. A distance property of graphs in general is also examined.
Isopathic graphs are graphs in which every maximal path has the same length. The major theorem of this section characterizes isopathic graphs as extended stars, bipartite or hamiltonian. There is then a discussion of the latter two classes of isopathic graphs.
At the end of Section I, there is an introduction to isopathic digraphs, a natural concern after an exposure to isopathic graphs.
Airport graphs, more appropriately snob graphs, can be thought of in the following way. …

A detailed description of a space qualified linear energy transfer (LET) spectrometer is presented. The Cellular Absorbed Dose Spectrometer (CADS) is a prototype instrument which was launched on March 17, 1969 into an elliptical orbit. Its purpose was to obtain the first successful LET measurements in space; and, thereby provide additional data to assess the biological hazards of the near earth space environment, especially during periods of increased solar activity.
The physical processes that take place in the CADS instrument are discussed, and a definition of linear energy transfer is given, as well as its relation to dE/dx. The performance …
Containerships: A Point Of Departure Or A Panacea?, Dale S. Brown Jr.
Containerships: A Point Of Departure Or A Panacea?, Dale S. Brown Jr.
Marine Affairs Theses and Major Papers
The advent of containerships has revolutionized the world’s shipping industry. In the United States’ struggle to compete for world markets and to improve military logistical support, it must keep abreast of current innovations in sea transport. An examination of the role played by containerships in this new technology must include the exploration of certain key questions. What is the best way to utilize this form of transport? What characteristics should these ships have? What are the best container sizes? Should the ships be self-sustaining, or should they call at ports with discharging facilities? How should companies determine legal problems concerning …

A Geochemical Study Of Distribution Of Elements In Ores And Limestones From New Jersey Zinc Mines, Hanover, New Mexico, Dasharatham Sayala
Earth and Planetary Sciences ETDs
Limestone samples (424) from both surface and subsurface horizons in the New Jersey Zinc mines at Hanover have been analyzed by atomic absorption spectrophotometry for Ag, Cd, Mn, Pb, Zn, Cu and Sn. The leadzinc ore bodies, occurring in Paleozoic limestones are a typical example of hydrothermal deposits; and are related to the Hanover intrusive. The distribution of trace elements in surface limestones was mainly due to primary dispersion, partly due to secondary dispersion. The depth of ore mineralization, concentration of element in ore solutions, porosity of limestones, diffusion coefficients of element, and the chemical nature of elements in the …

Chelation Of Two Polyhydroxyamines With Copper (Ii) Ion, David H. Powell
Chelation Of Two Polyhydroxyamines With Copper (Ii) Ion, David H. Powell
Master's Theses
Two polyamines, 2,8-bishydroxymethyl-2,8-dimethyl- 3, 7-diaza-1,5,9-nonanetriol and 2,8-bishydroxymethyl-2,8- dimethyl-3,7-diaza-l,9-nonanediol, were prepared and the coordination of these compounds with Cu (II) ions in solution was investigated. Spectrophotometric study of the solutions of these compounds gives evidence of the formation of two complexes, containing one mole of ligand per metal ion and two moles of ligand per metal ion, respectively. The two stability constants for these complexes and the basicity constants for these ligands were calculated from potentiometric titrations at 30°C. A compadson of the stabj lity constants and basici ty cons tan ts for the two compounds was made to determine the …
Nuclear-Magnetic-Resonance Measurement Of The Conduction-Electron G Factor In Cdte, David C. Look, D. L. Moore
Nuclear-Magnetic-Resonance Measurement Of The Conduction-Electron G Factor In Cdte, David C. Look, D. L. Moore
Physics Faculty Publications
The effective g factor g* of conduction electrons in degenerate CdTe has been determined by using measurements of the Cd113 nuclear spin-lattice relaxation time T1 and the Knight shift K. It is shown that the magnitude of g* is given by the Korringa product T1TK2=C(g*)2, where C is a known constant and T is the absolute temperature, and that the sign of g* is given by the sign of K for a spherically symmetric conduction band. The measured value, g*=-1.1±0.1, is within the range allowed …
Molecular Model For Prenucleation Water Clusters, P. L. M. Plummer, Barbara N. Hale
Molecular Model For Prenucleation Water Clusters, P. L. M. Plummer, Barbara N. Hale
Physics Faculty Research & Creative Works
A molecular model applicable to prenucleation water clusters is described. As an illustration the model is applied to water clusters having clathrate-like structures composed of five-menibered rings. This work was motivated by the apparent inadequacies of the corrected liquid drop model which (in addition to applying bulk properties to small clusters) predicts nucleation rates which may be as much as 1017 larger than experiment. We present the "energy of formation" at a temperature of 277°K for our molecular model for clusters ranging in size from 5 to 57 molecules. These results agree qualitatively with experiment and, we believe, provide …
Model For Predicting Simultaneous Distribution Of Salt And Water In Soils, Satish C. Gupta
Model For Predicting Simultaneous Distribution Of Salt And Water In Soils, Satish C. Gupta
All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023
Knowledge of water and salt movement in soils is necessary for development of a management scheme for controlling the quality of irrigation return flow. A computer model was developed to predict the distribution of water and salts in the root zone under varying initial and boundary conditions. The model consists of water flow and salt flow sub-models. The water flow sub-model considers the numerical approximation of the general water flow equation with modification for water loss by evapotranspiration (and thus root extraction). The salt flow sub-model considers the mass flow of salts, chemical exchange, precipitation or dissolution of CaCO3 …
Synthesis And Metal Coordination Properties Of Some Cyclic Polyethers And Polythioethers, Barry Lant Haymore
Synthesis And Metal Coordination Properties Of Some Cyclic Polyethers And Polythioethers, Barry Lant Haymore
Theses and Dissertations
Thermodynamic values for cation-cyclic polyether interactions for several systems are reported and discussed in light of ligand geometry, cation selectivity, solvent effects, structure, stoichiometry and the nature of the coordinate bond. Cyclic polyethers are shown to be remarkably good ligands even in water and to have marked selectivity for d0, d10 and d10 s2 cations. Syntheses of one new cyclic polyether and several new mixed cyclic polyether-thioethers are reported. Cyclic chelates with smaller rings are shown to prefer smaller cations, but this selectivity is masked by the hydration energy of the cation. Except for thiophillic cations such as Hg2+ and …
Enzymatic Synthesis Of Oligoribonucleotides Of Defined Base Sequence, Mark J. Rowe
Enzymatic Synthesis Of Oligoribonucleotides Of Defined Base Sequence, Mark J. Rowe
Theses and Dissertations
The synthetic reaction of ribonuclease T_1 has been studied as to its potential for the synthesis of oligoribonucleotides of defined base sequence. Conditions have been determined for maximum synthesis with respect to percentage incorporation of both guanosine 2',3'-cyclic phosphate (donor), and cytidine (acceptor). With regard to maximum acceptor incorporation, a donor blocked at the 5'-hydroxyl has been used to drive the reaction. It has also been shown that acceptor incorporation decreases as the chain-length increases up to the hexanucleotide. Synthesis of a 3'-blocked substrate for polynucleotide phosphorylase for use in chain termination studies was attempted using adenylate kinase. In this …
