A Study Of The Products Of The Reaction Between Stannous And Arsenate Ions In Silicic Acid Gels, Frank K. Thompson Jan 1936

A Study Of The Products Of The Reaction Between Stannous And Arsenate Ions In Silicic Acid Gels, Frank K. Thompson

University of the Pacific Theses and Dissertations

The fact that characteristic crystalline products result upon the diffusion of arsenate ions into silicic acid gel which has been impregnated with stannous ions has been known by the Pacific Chemistry Department for some time. The optimum conditions with regards to heat and hydrogen ion concentration have been determined. The purpose of this investigation was to study the products of the reaction. First to determine whether or not the silicic acid itself combined with the stannous and arsenate. ions in the formation of the crystalline product, and second to determine its chemical composition.

A Study Of Methods Of Determining The Rate Of Acid Hydrolysis Of Wheat Gluten, Angus V. Honrickson Jan 1936

A Study Of Methods Of Determining The Rate Of Acid Hydrolysis Of Wheat Gluten, Angus V. Honrickson

University of the Pacific Theses and Dissertations

Because of the nutritious value of sodium glutamate and its meat-like flavor, which is very pleasing to most people, and hence its demand if it were properly promoted, and because of the abundance of protein in accessible form for its manufacture, it is only reasonable to assume that if the optimum conditions of protein hydrolysis were found, the manufacturing could be made a highly successful enterprise. it was the purpose of this research to investigate the methods by which the hydrolysis of wheat glutes can do conveniently followed in order to determine the efficiency of reactions run under specific conditions.

Amherst Township, A Regional Study, Ruth C. Rockwood Jan 1936

Amherst Township, A Regional Study, Ruth C. Rockwood

Honors Papers

Amherst township was selected as the area to be studied because it was believed to be as nearly representative of the aspects of land and life in north central Ohio as any small area that could be found. It is located on a section of the Lake Plain which has somewhat parallel lines formed by three beach-ridges, and on the northern edge of the Glaciated Plain. Then, the quarrying of the world famous Berea sandstone gives somewhat of an individual aspect to the small towns within Amherst township.

The purpose of the paper is to describe the physical landscape, and …

The Sorption Of Fluoride Ion With Special Reference To Fluoride Removal From Potable Waters, Phillip W. West Jan 1936

The Sorption Of Fluoride Ion With Special Reference To Fluoride Removal From Potable Waters, Phillip W. West

Theses and Dissertations

The recent discovery that even very small concentrations of fluorides in drinking waters are sufficient to cause the serious dental dystrophy commonly known as mottled enamel, has around widespread interest and concern. Federal and State surveys have been conducted to determine the geographical distribution of the malady, and the fluoride contents of water supplies.

County dental surveys, conducted by the United States Public Health Department with the cooperation of local dentists, have located the regions throughout the country where mottled enamel is endemic and among these localities is an area in southeastern North Dakota and adjacent territory in South Dakota …

The Lime Content Of Rocks Of The Upper Cretaceous System Of Ellis County, Kansas, G. Lawrence Rarick Nov 1935

The Lime Content Of Rocks Of The Upper Cretaceous System Of Ellis County, Kansas, G. Lawrence Rarick

Master's Theses

The report which is being submitted here is the result of several weeks of field and laboratory work investigating the rocks of the Upper Cretaceous System of Ellis County, Kansas. The writer has attempted to consider the subject primarily from a chemical viewpoint although much of the background for the work has been of a geological nature. There has been no attempt to give a complete chemical analysis of the rocks of the Upper Cretaceous System, but rather a more or less thorough analysis in regard to the percentage of lime that the rocks of the various formations and members …

Fossil Bearing Basalts (More Particularly The Yakima Basalt Of Central Washington), George F. Beck Nov 1935

Fossil Bearing Basalts (More Particularly The Yakima Basalt Of Central Washington), George F. Beck

All Faculty Scholarship for the College of the Sciences

Such an overwhelming majority of the floral and faunal remains of the earth's crust have been yielded by rocks of sedimentary origin that generalized statements concerning the occurrence of fossils often neglect their more rare appearance in metamorphic and igneous rocks. In fact there is the temptation, after volcanic tuffs have been excluded as more or less sedimentary, to venture the positive assertion that by their very character igneous rocks are incapable of recording the presence of the life which may have existed at the time of their extrusion. As a result, most that has been written concerning fossil floras …

Conservation Of The Prehistoric Remains Of Nebraska, Alvin Leonard Lugn

Department of Earth and Atmospheric Sciences: Faculty Publications

A RESOLUTION has recently been adopted by both houses of the Nebraska legislature to conserve the scientifically very valuable deposits of fossil and other prehistoric remains which occur in the state. This is not to be construed as an unfriendly move on the part of the sponsors of this act. The Nebraska Geological Survey welcomes serious scientific study and research within the state by all persons and institutions who seriously desire to investigate and collect for purely scientific purposes. There is no intention to restrict or curtail the collection of materials by properly accredited representatives of educational institutions and museums. …

A Comparative Pollution Study Of The Domestic Water Supply Of Warren County, Kentucky, Glenn Scott Aug 1935

A Comparative Pollution Study Of The Domestic Water Supply Of Warren County, Kentucky, Glenn Scott

Masters Theses & Specialist Projects

The domestic water supply of Warren County, outside of the city of Bowling Green, is obtained from deep wells and springs. The county is about evenly divided into a southern section of cavernous limestone and a northern section of mixed sandstone and limestone formations.

The wells of the southern cavernous limestone region receive water from unfiltered underground streams and lakes. Most of the wells of the northern region are drilled in sandstone and the water, in a majority of cases, is filtered through porous sandstone and shale.

The purpose of this study was to make a comparative pollution study of …

Analysis Of Errors Made By 717 Collge Students In Arithmetic, O.D. Barnes Aug 1935

Analysis Of Errors Made By 717 Collge Students In Arithmetic, O.D. Barnes

Masters Theses & Specialist Projects

During the greater part of the elementary-school training of the average American child he receives a large amount of instruction and drill in arithmetic. In the high school he suddenly drops arithmetic except as he maintains practices in courses of science or high school mathematics and except as the transactions of every day life involve arithmetic. In college the individual may suddenly find that the amount of arithmetical knowledge required is not small as in physics, chemistry or certain commercial courses. Evidence exists to indicate that students doing poor work in these courses are often found deficient in arithmetic.

The Solution Of Ordinary & Partial Differential Equations In Series, Kenneth Wood Aug 1935

The Solution Of Ordinary & Partial Differential Equations In Series, Kenneth Wood

Masters Theses & Specialist Projects

The purpose of this thesis is to compile and discuss some of the methods of solution of both ordinary and partial differential equations, whose solutions are expressible in the form of a series. An exhaustive study is not attempted. A few of the methods of most common occurrence for finding solutions in series are discussed and examples illustrating these methods are presented.

Comparison Of Hydrogen Ion Concentration Results In Silicic Acid Gel Mixtures By Different Methods, Edward David Luneburg Jun 1935

Comparison Of Hydrogen Ion Concentration Results In Silicic Acid Gel Mixtures By Different Methods, Edward David Luneburg

Honors Theses

Since a conclusive theory of the structure of gels has not been presented yet, it is still necessary to obtain as much data about gels as possible, in the hope that the assembled data will lead to a theory which will explain all the known facts. Thus, the effect of such factors as temperature, concentration of acis and the addition of indicators were studied. Also, the change of the properties of viscosity and conductivity during the time of set were studied.

Change Of Conductivity Of Silicic Acid Gels Upon Setting, Robert Louie Slobod Jun 1935

Change Of Conductivity Of Silicic Acid Gels Upon Setting, Robert Louie Slobod

Honors Theses

In the course of the investigation that has been conducted at Union College by Prof. Charles B. Hurd and his student assistants, it was soon found that something more accurate than the Wheatstone bridge would have to be used in measuring the electrical conductivity of gels. This becomes evident if we consider that in such studies we encounter the measurement of very small changes in the total resistance, changes of the order of one or two parts in twenty thousand. Accordingly, a modification of the Carey Foster bridge was developed for this work.

Migration Of Ions Through Silicic Acid Gels, Richard Edward Davies Jun 1935

Migration Of Ions Through Silicic Acid Gels, Richard Edward Davies

Honors Theses

Ever since Liesegane (1), rediscovered the phenomenon of rhythmic precipitation first due to Runge (2), the colloid chemists have been using their ingenuity in attempts to explain the factors responsible for the formation of Liesegang rings. The theories resulting from such investigation have not been entirely satisfactory. In recent years the problem has been taken up by the students of waye mechanics in hope of conquering that which has so far defined the chemists. It is hoped that by continuing the work of Bieleski (3) and Rothemich (4) with the probing electrode, one of the many theories concerning the phenomenon …
