A Measurement Of The Extent Of The Color-Sensitive Areas Of The Retina And Of The Wavelengths Of Light Stimulating The Respective Receptor Mechanisms, Charles A. Rinde Jan 1930

A Measurement Of The Extent Of The Color-Sensitive Areas Of The Retina And Of The Wavelengths Of Light Stimulating The Respective Receptor Mechanisms, Charles A. Rinde

University of the Pacific Theses and Dissertations

The interest of the writer was directed toward the phenomena of color vision in 1927 as a result of attending concurrently two courses in the University of California touching upon the subject, but treating it quite differently with results far from mutually consistent. Prof. R. S. Minor, in his course on physical optics, discussed color vision from the physicist’s standpoint, making use of the Young-Helmholtz theory; while Prof. G. M. Stratton gave the psychological treatment, based upon the Ladd-Franklin theory, as a part of his general psychology. Several of the more obviously points of conflict impressed the writer so strongly …

The Mandible Of Amebelodon Fricki, Erwin H. Barbour

Bulletin of the University of Nebraska State Museum

The type specimen of the genus Amebelodon is installed in the Nebraska State Museum, the University of Nebraska, Lincoln. It consists of a mandible with tusks and teeth, all of which are dense and perfect, barring minor cracks and breaks. One toe bone and part of a rib found associated with this mandible may belong to this animal. It was discovered by Mr. A. S. Keith on his farm near Freedom, Frontier County, Nebraska; was secured for the palaeontological collections of Hon. Charles H. Morrill by Mr. Phillip Orr, April 4, 1927; was briefly described and figured in a Museum …

Faraday's Laws Of Electrolysis, M. Aquinas Dec 1929

Faraday's Laws Of Electrolysis, M. Aquinas

Bachelors’ Theses

Physics has no equal, perhaps, in bringing the student to an appreciation of the beauty, the order and the harmony or the universe, and thus drawing the heart and the mind to God whose unbounded powers executed the eternal and marvelous wonders that are all about us.

It is intensely fascinating to take peeps into the "laboratories of God" and wonder what will be the next secret that He will let man in on. It seems as the ages roll by He gradually allows us to share more and more in His secrets or nature; He appears to be slowly …

The Quantitative Analysis Of Sodium Acetate, Henry A. Budzinski

Bachelors’ Theses

There are many methods by which Sodium Acetate can be analysed for its purity. Each method is satisfactory and the results obtained vary only slightly. However, this essay is for the purpose of determining the method which is most suitable for all conditions, and setting this method as a standard.

Scholasticism An Intellectual Basis And Unifying Principle Of Modern Science, Alice V. Johnson Jul 1929

Scholasticism An Intellectual Basis And Unifying Principle Of Modern Science, Alice V. Johnson

Electronic Thesis and Dissertation

Amid the almost uninterrupted disintegration of systems during the last three centuries, the philosophy of St. Thomas has alone been able to stand the shock of criticism; it alone has proved sufficiently solid and comprehensive to serve as an intellectual basis and unifying principle for all the new facts and phenomena brought to light by modern science.

The Chromite Deposits Of Stillwater And Sweetgrass Counties, Montana, Uuno Sahinen Jun 1929

The Chromite Deposits Of Stillwater And Sweetgrass Counties, Montana, Uuno Sahinen

Bachelors Theses and Reports, 1928 - 1970

In writing this report, two objects were kept in mind, (1) to explain, if possible, the origin of the chromite deposits found in Sweetgrass and Stillwater Counties, and (2) to bring up to date all information on these deposits which had thus far been available.

The work done consisted of study of the rocks and ores of the area under the microscope, both as thin sections and as polished sections, practically all of which was done at the Montana State School of Mines, during the school year of 1928 - 1929.

The rock specimens and much information as to their …

The Cycloid, Some Related Curves And Their Derivation, Ann Downer Jun 1929

The Cycloid, Some Related Curves And Their Derivation, Ann Downer

Bachelors’ Theses

In studying the history of the cycloid and the related curves, it is interesting to note that the earliest notations and explanations were given not by a mathematician but by an artist. The description and instrumental construction of the epicycloid curve was presented in about 1525 by Albrecht Durer (1471-1528) a celebrated sculptor and painter of Nurnberg in his book "Underweysund der Messung mit dem Zyrkenund Rychtsceyd." The original idea, however, goes as far back as the time of Hipparchus, an astronomer, who used it in his astronomical theory of epicycles. This curve was now neglected until G. Desargues and …

The Constant Of Torsion Of A Given Wire, Ella M. Blunk Jun 1929

The Constant Of Torsion Of A Given Wire, Ella M. Blunk

Bachelors’ Theses

"Using a given wire, the value of n determined dynamically is generally somewhat larger than the value determined by statical method. This is due partly to the fact that a wire, under the action of a torque, does not at once acquire its final twist. The twist increases under the application of a constant torque; and therefore, during a brief application of the torque (for example, during an oscillation of heavy body attached to the wire) the torque per unit twist has larger value than when the torque is applied for a long time. " Edwin Edser

The Effect Of Carbon Dioxide Tension Upon The Ability Of Goldfish To Abosorb Oxygen At Low Tension, Thressa A. Hickman Jun 1929

The Effect Of Carbon Dioxide Tension Upon The Ability Of Goldfish To Abosorb Oxygen At Low Tension, Thressa A. Hickman

Masters Theses

Within recent years much has been contributed to our knowledge of the physiology of respiration. Van Slyke (1921) in a study of the carbon dioxide carriers of the blood concluded that hemoglobin is almost as completely responsible for the transport of CO2 in the blood as it is for the transport of oxygen. And that from 80% to 95%, sometimes possibly all, of the alkali furnished to neutralize the CO2 that enters the venous blood comes from the hemoglobin.

Powers (1922) found that species of marine fishes have an optimum pH of more or less wide range for …

A Study Of The Oxidation Of D-Glucose With Air In A Saturated Solution Of Barium Hydroxide, Clyde Wilson Eddy May 1929

A Study Of The Oxidation Of D-Glucose With Air In A Saturated Solution Of Barium Hydroxide, Clyde Wilson Eddy

Open Access Master's Theses (through 2010)

The conversion of one aldose into another aldose and several ketoses slowly by weak alkalis at ordinary temperatures and quickly with much decomposition at elevated temperatures, was first observed by Lobry de Bruyn and later investigated by Nef and his students in an elaborate study on the action of strong alkalis alone and with oxidizing agents extending over a period of ten years. The results of these studies on oxidation were interpreted as depending on the presence of several intermediate enediols. The oxidation of sugars in approximately six normal alkali medium with air or oxidizing agents all give about the …

Torynobelodon Loomisi, Gen Et. Sp. Nov., Erwin H. Barbour

Bulletin of the University of Nebraska State Museum

The group of proboscideans which we have called the shovel-tuskers or Amebelodonts, was announced in June, 1927,1 following the discovery of Amebelodon fricki. In the field season of 1928, two additional species were found which are represented by mandibular tusks. One of these is a tip of a large and unique tusk, numbered 2-3-9-28, S. and L., the collectors being Bertrand Schultz and John LeMar, both of the class of 1931, the University of Nebraska. It was found within 200 to 300 yards of the spot on his farm where Mr. A. S. Keith, Freedom, Frontier County, Nebraska, found …

Symmetric Functions Of N-Ic Residues (Mod P), T. A. Pierce Jan 1929

Symmetric Functions Of N-Ic Residues (Mod P), T. A. Pierce

Department of Mathematics: Faculty Publications

If p be an odd prime, q is said to be an n- ic residue of p if the congruence xn = q (mod p) has solutions; otherwise q is an n-ic non-residue of p. A necessary and sufficient condition that q be an n-ic residue of p is that
(1) q (p- 1)/δ ≡ 1, (mod p),
where δ = g.c.d. (p - 1, n). The numberf of n-ic residues of a given prime p is (p-1)/δ.
It is with the symmetric functions of these …

Colloidal Content And Related Soil Factors As Indicators Of Site Quality, Irvine T. Haig Jan 1929

Colloidal Content And Related Soil Factors As Indicators Of Site Quality, Irvine T. Haig

Yale School of the Environment Bulletin Series

This paper presents a study of the correlation between soil colloidal content and soil productiveness and hence a measure of the value of colloidal content in determining site quality. The character of this investigation also permitted incidental observation and comment on the relative value of organic matter, soil acidity, and soil type and class as similar measures. The findings are directly applicable to the forest soils of southern Connecticut and, more particularly, to such of these soils as occur commonly in the vicinity of New Haven. Since these soils are typical of the brown, weakly podsolized forest soils of southern …

Some Aspects Of Soil Moisture In The Forest, Ian J. Craib Jan 1929

Some Aspects Of Soil Moisture In The Forest, Ian J. Craib

Yale School of the Environment Bulletin Series

By determining the moisture content of carefully selected soil samples taken at various depths down to three feet, the moisture content of soils in the forest and in the open have been compared. The soils investigated were similar in their mechanical properties. Part I is an investigation of the effect of forest cover on the amount of water in the soil over the growing season and its availability. Part II is an investigation of the effect of root competition on the available water supply of forest soils.

"Triassic-Jurassic 'Red Beds' Of The Rocky Mountain Region": A Discussion, John B. Reeside Jr. Jan 1929

"Triassic-Jurassic 'Red Beds' Of The Rocky Mountain Region": A Discussion, John B. Reeside Jr.

United States Geological Survey: Staff Publications

The conclusion drawn by Professor E. B. Branson in a recent paper on the "Red Beds" of the Rocky Mountain region that parts of these beds are marine is considered likely. The conclusion that there exists no basis for subdivision of the beds is not accepted, and a division of the Mesozoic part into Lower Triassic, Upper Triassic, and Jurassic units is advocated. The conclusion that no eolian deposits are present likewise is not accepted, and the interpretation of important parts of the Jurassic unit as eolian is advocated. Disagreement is expressed with much of Professor Branson's correlation table, and …

Reaction Of Metallic Iron And Copper Sulphate In The Flotation Of Sphalerite, Charles Wilson Ambler Jan 1929

Reaction Of Metallic Iron And Copper Sulphate In The Flotation Of Sphalerite, Charles Wilson Ambler

Masters Theses

"Copper sulphate is a common flotation reagent for blende ores. Metallic iron is also present in the mill circuit and a reaction between the iron and the salt would be in accord with well known chemistry. The abundance of metallic iron in a flotation feed may be noted by the examination of any feed. It originates, first of all, in the mine, then the coarse crushing machines contribute their share, and finally the fine grinding medium is a large contributor. If the grinding is with cast iron balls in amount of metallics is greater than when steel is used. In …

Thomas Chrowder Chamberlin's Contribu-Tions To Glacial Geology, William C. Alden Jan 1929

Thomas Chrowder Chamberlin's Contribu-Tions To Glacial Geology, William C. Alden

United States Geological Survey: Staff Publications

So prominent did Thomas Chrowder Chamberlin become in the field of glacial geology that it is a matter of some interest and importance to consider what was the status of the science at the time he turned his attention, as a student and a teacher, to it. So voluminous is the literature of this subject that it is obvious that one cannot in a sketch of this kind give even a general summary of the many books and papers on the subject published in this country, even were it desirable to do so. The intention is to indicate only what …

A Study Of Ball Mills, Robert Lee Kidd Jan 1929

A Study Of Ball Mills, Robert Lee Kidd

Masters Theses

"The study of the ball mill is very complicated, due to the varying conditions existing in the mill. Some of these conditions are: Size of grinding media, size of feed, moisture content, and speed with its effect on the paths of the grinding media. A brief history of fine grinding will first be outlines, after which some of the theories of ball milling will be stated. Then the paths of the grinding media will be given some attention, and a new point of view about the trajectory will be brought out"--Introduction, page 2.
