"The usual method of treatment has been to charge the "flue dust" into reverberatories and smelt it with the regular charge of calcined ore. There was a consequent cost of handling and a serious loss thru furnace draft and boiling, due to the fine state of division of the material and the presence of sulphates, acid, and moisture.

"Within the past few years great success has been made of the flotation of sulfids, and to a certain extent of carbonates.

Since sulfids are easily recovered by flotation it seems practicable that silicates could be made to float by first sulfidizing them, and then subjecting them to ordinary flotation treatment.

This problem involves the treatment of a silicate sludge obtained from the Joplin district, the sludge will easily pass through a 250 mesh screen. At the present time this sludge is being sent to the tailings pond.

In irrigated districts, where excessive quantities of water are used, there is usually an accumulation of alkali salts in the soils of the lower lands. These salts are probably dissolved from the soils through which the percolating waters pass and are carried along until the water comes to the surface and is evaporated, when the salts are deposited as a crust at the surface. "Kahlenberg and Hillyer have shown that lead oxide (PbO) dissolves in neutral potassium tartrate to form a strongly alkaline solution in which the ratio of potassium to lead is 1:1. Since this solution shows a very low concentration of lead ion it might be expected to give a smooth and adherent cathode deposit. The Round Ligament Of Nebraska Proboscideans, Erwin H. Barbour

Comparisons of the acetabula of various mastodons and mammoths common to Nebraska show conclusively that absence of the round ligament is not a characteristic of the proboscidea, as generally accepted. From the specimens in our collections, there is evidence that the ligament was not on! y present, but was uncommonly large and well developed in the earlier Nebraska proboscideans. Examination of material collected since 1891, and preserved in the cabinets of the Nebraska State Museum. and the Morrill Geological Collections, makes it apparent that all Nebraska proboscideans had round ligaments, though perhaps the latest survivors did not.

This paper must not be mistaken for a report on the fossils of Nebraska. It is merely a circular letter to correspondents describing and figuring those fossils only which occasion frequent comment. In two recent papers of the Survey consideration was given to the common minerals and rocks of Nebraska, and it seems opportune to briefly discuss our fossils in a like manner. Probably no other State can boast of such a well-preserved and varied fauna.
