Report On The Progress Of The Nebraska State Geological Survey And The Morrill Geological Expedition Of 1901, Erwin Hinckley Barbour

Department of Earth and Atmospheric Sciences: Faculty Publications

IN spite of the phenomenal heat of the summer of 1901, which was of such intensity and duration that active work in the field was finally suspended, enough progress was made to justify the presentation of the matter to this society. It should be reported, first of all, that a request for funds, amounting to twelve hundred dollars, for publishing the first reports of the state geological survey, was presented to the Legislature, and was passed April 1, 1901, without comment or dissent. This may be recorded as the first sum voted by the state for the examination and publication …

The Geological Bibllography Of Nebraska, Erwin H. Barbour, Cassius A. Fisher

Department of Earth and Atmospheric Sciences: Faculty Publications

Where there is a wide diversity of interests it is necessary for citizens, including farmers, mechanics, merchants, students, and professional men, to make constant reference to. the various authors of the state to learn what has been done and what has been written along the diverse lines of investigation in which they are interested. In response, then, to constant inquiry the following list of papers is prepared, being compiled from every available source. PaleontoIogical papers dealing mainly with the descriptions have not been included in every case. But the list of articles concerning our geography, physiography, stratigraphy, resources, water-supply, etc., …

Report On The Work Of The Morrill Geological Expeditions Of The University Of Nebraska, Carrie Adeline Barbour Jun 1900

Report On The Work Of The Morrill Geological Expeditions Of The University Of Nebraska, Carrie Adeline Barbour

Department of Earth and Atmospheric Sciences: Faculty Publications

Through the generosity of the Hon. Charles H. Morrill, of Lincoln, the expeditions sent out from the University of Nebraska, known as the Morrill Geological Expeditions, have become a permanent organization of the University. Therefore, it is but a fitting mark of respect that reports of these expeditions be given to the Nebraska Academy of Science from time to time in order that they may become matters of record. Introductory to this work, a private geological excursion was undertaken in June of 1891, by Mr. Erwin Hinckley Barbour in the interest of the University of Nebraska. At this time the …

Glacial Grooves And Striae In Southeastern Nebraska, Erwin Hinckley Barbour May 1900

Glacial Grooves And Striae In Southeastern Nebraska, Erwin Hinckley Barbour

Department of Earth and Atmospheric Sciences: Faculty Publications

NEBRASKA is so close upon the western as well as the southern limit of the drift that evidences of glacial action which might be commonplace elsewhere are rare and interesting here. The mere fact that glacial grooves and striae have been found seems worthy therefore of mention. Glacial drift, readily recognizable as such, does not extend far west of the 97th meridian, and in but one place in the state, on the Dakota-Nebraska boundary, does it reach the 98th meridian. East of the 97th meridian it is distinct and unmistakable, and it may be offered as a safe statement that …

Report On The Initial Work Of The State Geological Survey Of Nebraska, Erwin Hinckley Barbour Mar 1900

Report On The Initial Work Of The State Geological Survey Of Nebraska, Erwin Hinckley Barbour

Department of Earth and Atmospheric Sciences: Faculty Publications

IN a State such as Nebraska where there is no 'mineral'--a term which in the west has come to mean gold and silver-bearing--it is difficult to convince the masses that there is the least possible economic importance in a State geological survey.

If 'mineral' did occur, apathy could much more easily be overcome, and the appeals for a survey would find more willing and receptive ears. But something stronger than apathy is encountered in the prejudice which has been engendered against a State survey by men who have sought heretofore to establish such for the evident purpose of holding office, …

Design Of A Mill For A Cyanide Plant, Charles A. Fach Jan 1900

Design Of A Mill For A Cyanide Plant, Charles A. Fach

Bachelors Theses

"Object. Designing a mill, which according to my ideas, would be the best in practice. The machinery used in practice at the present time, is mostly old style. In this work of mine I have substituted a great deal of lately invented machinery which would give much better and quicker results than the machinery now used. Many ideas have come to me while working on this subject which I think would assist me in any further work on the subject"--page 1.

The Systhesis Of Camphor From Pinene, Edwin W. Newbury Jan 1900

The Systhesis Of Camphor From Pinene, Edwin W. Newbury

Bachelors’ Theses

The increasing demand for camphor for use in the manufacture of cellulose plastics has led to a great amount of investigation of the nature of this valuable substance and as to its synthesis from materials which are readily obtainable without the necessity for sending overseas for them. At present most of the camphor used in the manufacture of celluloid and allied compounds is imported from Japan or Borneo, where it is obtained, in a rather crude and wasteful fashion, from a species of laurel. Some scientifically operated camphor plantations have been started in the United States.. In one such plantation …

Some Experiments In Molecular Contact, James S. Stevens Jan 1899

Some Experiments In Molecular Contact, James S. Stevens

Physics and Astronomy Faculty Scholarship

In working with an interferometer it was observed that one could slide the brass plate which carries the movable mirror along the bed upon which it lies so that the fringes would suffer displacement for a small but definite amount, and that when the plate was released they would return to their original position. The idea occurred to me that it might be possible to measure these displacements for given weights applied to move the mirror-plate, and ascertain if they followed any law, and what relation these experiments bore to the ordinary experiments for finding the coefficients of friction.

The Effect Of Magnetization Upon The Elasticity Of Rods, J. S. Stevens, H. G. Dorsey Jan 1899

The Effect Of Magnetization Upon The Elasticity Of Rods, J. S. Stevens, H. G. Dorsey

Physics and Astronomy Faculty Scholarship

In the Physical Review, Vol. II, No. 4 and Vol. III., No. 6, is described a series of important experiments which show the relation between temperature and elasticity in wire. In one of the papers the statement was made that the results seem to indicate that the magnetizing effect of the current through the wire increases the modulus of elasticity. The increase in temperature in the wire was produced by sending a current directly through it, and also by sending a current through the helix that surrounded it. The author stated that "the magnetization produced by the first method had …

A Determination Of The Modulus Of Elasticity For Small Loads, Charles P. Weston Jan 1899

A Determination Of The Modulus Of Elasticity For Small Loads, Charles P. Weston

Physics and Astronomy Faculty Scholarship

"At the suggestion of Professor James S. Stevens, and under his supervision, I undertook to apply interference methods of measurement to an experimental determination of Young's modulus for copper, brass, and steel. The metals were in the form of bars, 66 cm x 1 cm x 0.5 cm (approximate dimensions). The general method followed was the so-called "method of flexure" in which a bar, supported at each end on knife edges, if deflected by a weight applied at the center,

Assay Of Copper Matte For Gold And Silver, Walter E. Soest Jan 1899

Assay Of Copper Matte For Gold And Silver, Walter E. Soest

Bachelors Theses

"Ores containing copper, and especially copper matte, have always been very annoying in assaying for the precious metals. In assaying copper matte, and ores containing much copper, by the usual method of scorification, the losses of silver an gold are considerable, owing to the fact that in order to obtain lead buttons, which are soft and free from copper, repeated scorifications are necessary, and moreover it is impossible to obtain lead buttons which are entirely free from copper"--page 1.

Wells And Windmills In Nebraska, Erwin Hinckley Barbour

United States Geological Survey: Publications

SIR :

I have the honor to transmit herewith a manuscript entitled "Wells and Windmills in Nebraska," prepared by Erwin Hinckley Barbour, professor of geology in the University of Nebraska and acting State geologist. The data for this manuscript were obtained by Professor Barbour incidental to his studies of the geology of the State, and have been rounded out by special work carried on under his direction. The original manuscript as prepared consisted of two parts the first upon wells, and the second upon homemade windmills but owing to delays in printing the first part, it has been considered advisable …
