Comparing Artificial-Intelligence Techniques With State-Of-The-Art Parametric Prediction Models For Predicting Soybean Traits, Susweta Ray, Diego Jarquin, Reka Howard May 2022

Comparing Artificial-Intelligence Techniques With State-Of-The-Art Parametric Prediction Models For Predicting Soybean Traits, Susweta Ray, Diego Jarquin, Reka Howard

Department of Statistics: Faculty Publications

Soybean [Glycine max (L.) Merr.] is a significant source of protein and oil and is also widely used as animal feed. Thus, developing lines that are superior in terms of yield, protein, and oil content is important to feed the ever-growing population. As opposed to high-cost phenotyping, genotyping is both cost and time efficient for breeders because evaluating new lines in different environments (location–year combinations) can be costly. Several genomic prediction (GP) methods have been developed to use the marker and environment data effectively to predict the yield or other relevant phenotypic traits of crops. Our study compares a conventional …

Murphy Scale: A Locational Equivalent Intensity Scale For Hazard Events, Yi Victor Wang, Antonia Sebastian May 2022

Murphy Scale: A Locational Equivalent Intensity Scale For Hazard Events, Yi Victor Wang, Antonia Sebastian

Institute for ECHO Articles and Research

Empirical cross-hazard analysis and prediction of disaster vulnerability, resilience, and risk requires a common metric of hazard strengths across hazard types. In this paper, the authors propose an equivalent intensity scale for cross-hazard evaluation of hazard strengths of events for entire durations at locations. The proposed scale is called the Murphy Scale, after Professor Colleen Murphy. A systematic review and typology of hazard strength metrics is presented to facilitate the delineation of the defining dimensions of the proposed scale. An empirical methodology is introduced to derive equivalent intensities of hazard events on a Murphy Scale. Using historical data on …

Environmental Science and Management Faculty Publications and Presentations

  1. Understanding the breadth and complexity of changes in phenology is limited by the availability of long-term historical data sets with broad geographic range.
  2. We compare a recently discovered historical data set of plant phenology observations collected across the state of New York (1826–1872) to contemporary volunteer-contributed observations (2009–2017) to evaluate changes in plant phenology between time periods. These multi-site, multi-taxa phenology data matched with temperature data uniquely extend historical observations back in time prior to the major atmospheric effects of the Industrial Revolution.
  3. The majority of the 36 trees, shrubs and forbs that comprised our analysable data set flowered and …

Contributions Of Vibrational Spectroscopy To Virology: A Review, Iqra Chaudhary, Naomi Jackson, Denise Denning, Luke O'Neill, Hugh Byrne

Articles

Vibrational spectroscopic techniques, both infrared absorption and Raman scattering, are high precision, label free analytical techniques which have found applications in fields as diverse as analytical chemistry, pharmacology, forensics and archeometrics and, in recent times, have attracted increasing attention for biomedical applications. As analytical techniques, they have been applied to the characterisation of viruses as early as the 1970s, and, in the context of the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic, have been explored in response to the World Health Organisation as novel methodologies to aid in the global efforts to implement and improve rapid screening of viral infection. This review …

Equidistant Sets In Spaces Of Bounded Curvature, Logan Scott Fox May 2022

Equidistant Sets In Spaces Of Bounded Curvature, Logan Scott Fox

Dissertations and Theses

Given a metric space (X,d), and two nonempty subsets A,BX, we study the properties of the set of points of equal distance to A and B, which we call the equidistant set E(A,B). In general, the structure of the equidistant set is quite unpredictable, so we look for conditions on the ambient space, as well as the given subsets, which lead to some regularity of the properties of the equidistant set. At a minimum, we will always require that X is path connected (so that E( …

Simulating Photo-Disintegration Of 137cs Radioactive Waste Using Various Energies Of Gamma Photons, Hassanain H. Alkazzaz, Asia H. Al-Mashhadani, Kamal H. Lateef May 2022

Simulating Photo-Disintegration Of 137cs Radioactive Waste Using Various Energies Of Gamma Photons, Hassanain H. Alkazzaz, Asia H. Al-Mashhadani, Kamal H. Lateef

Karbala International Journal of Modern Science

In this study, the possibility of using gamma-ray in photo-disintegration method was examined so that it can be used in the remediation of 137Cs radionuclides waste materials by nuclear transmutation to convert long-lived nuclides to other isotopes nuclides, which are shorter half-life (or stable), by different photo-nuclear reaction channels (γ,n), (γ,2n), (γ,p), (γ, a), (γ,d). A simulation code has been written using MATLAB for conducting calculations of reduction and residual. The results showed that gamma-ray fluxes below 1017 [cm-2 s-1] are not adequate to perform effective incinera-tion of 137Cs, and as for gamma flux of 1018 [cm-2 s-1] it showed …

Karbala International Journal of Modern Science

The COVID-19 outbreak has infected millions of people worldwide, but no vaccine has been discovered to combat it efficiently. This research aims to design a multi-epitope vaccine using highly efficient B- and T-cell epitopes from the SARS-CoV-2 Surabaya isolate through a viroinformatic approach. First, the putative epitopes were linked together to develop tertiary structures and then docked with toll-like receptor 4 (TLR-4) that demonstrated a robust interaction with a low eigenvalue of 4.816138 e-06. Furthermore, the structure's high immunogenic response was observed and successfully cloned into the expression vector pET28a (+). This implies that the designed vaccine can prove effective …

Loggerhead Shrike Detectability And Occurrence In Coastal South Carolina Urban Areas, Michelle Krauser May 2022

Loggerhead Shrike Detectability And Occurrence In Coastal South Carolina Urban Areas, Michelle Krauser

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Grassland birds, such as the loggerhead shrike (Lanius ludovicianus), are threatened by extensive land-use change, including urbanization. Loggerhead shrikes have been declining since the early 1900s and are rare or extirpated in portions of their former range. Obtaining reliable population estimates of loggerhead shrikes is important to identify demographic trends and ensure conservation decisions are based on an accurate assessment of their current status. Imperfect detection, or the inability to detect every shrike during a survey, can result in biased population estimates. Estimating detection probability is labor-intensive and requires assumptions that are difficult to satisfy in most field studies. Understanding …

The Relationship Between Urban Heat Islands And Redline Districts, Emily Cornwell May 2022

The Relationship Between Urban Heat Islands And Redline Districts, Emily Cornwell

Undergraduate Theses and Capstone Projects

As climate change worsens and the world attempts to find solutions to global changes, it is important to identify how climate change will affect individual communities. Climate resilience tactics aim to protect vulnerable populations against environmental harms, such as excess heat. Historically, communities of color face forms of environmental racism. One example of structural racism includes the loans given out by the Home Owners Loan Corporation during the 1940s which “redlined” certain communities of color by refusing to give these neighborhoods loans and rated these areas undesirable for loaners. Urban heat islands occur in residential, densely populated areas with lots …

Dementia Classification Through Textual Analysis With Machine Learning Algorithms, Joseph Hurowitz May 2022

Dementia Classification Through Textual Analysis With Machine Learning Algorithms, Joseph Hurowitz

Undergraduate Theses and Capstone Projects

The goal of this work is to build a classifier that can identify whether a patient is suffering from Alzheimer’s Disease of the Dementia Type (AD). A corpus of 2751 texts was used from the DementiaBank database, where each conversation is transcribed and marked using the CHAT format. Each text was analyzed by frequency of disfluencies, use of aphasic language, and lexical features. All parsed data was used to train a Random Forest, Naïve Bayes, and Support Vector Machine algorithm. These classification algorithms will be tested on the combination of all features, as well as each set of features individually.

Effects Of Precipitation On Groundwater Level In An Urban Watershed, Andrew Golladay May 2022

Effects Of Precipitation On Groundwater Level In An Urban Watershed, Andrew Golladay

Undergraduate Theses and Capstone Projects

Groundwater is an important aspect of a watershed, as it is a reservoir for the storage of water. It both releases water to the surface in dry periods and absorbs excess water in wet periods. Precipitation provides surface water that is then absorbed to replenish groundwater. The specific purpose of this research was to determine the recharge rate of the water table after a rainfall event, with a goal to also develop a framework or long-term monitoring of the water table along an urban stream in Lynchburg, Virginia, and to establish baseline groundwater data before a dam is removed from …

Applications Of Powerset Operators, Especially To Matroids, Nathan Uricchio May 2022

Applications Of Powerset Operators, Especially To Matroids, Nathan Uricchio

Dissertations - ALL

Let \(\mathcal{V}\) denote a vector space over an arbitrary field with an inner product. For any collection \(\mathcal{S}\) of vectors from \(\mathcal{V}\) the collection of all vectors orthogonal to each vector in \(\mathcal{S}\) is a subspace, denoted as \(\mathcal{S}^{\perp_v}\) and called the \textit{orthogonal complement} of \(\mathcal{S}\). One of the fundamental theorems of vector space theory states that, \((\mathcal{S}^{\perp_v})^{\perp_v}\) is the subspace \textit{spanned} by \(\mathcal{S}\). Thus the ``spanning'' operator on the subsets of a vector space is the square of the ``orthogonal complement'' operator.

In matroid theory, the orthogonal complement of a matroid \(M\) is also well-defined and similarly results in …

Matrix Factorizations With More Than Two Factors, Tim Tribone May 2022

Matrix Factorizations With More Than Two Factors, Tim Tribone

Dissertations - ALL

Let $S$ be a regular local ring and $f$ a non-zero non-invertible element of $S$. In this thesis, we study the notion of a matrix factorization of $f$ with $d\ge 2$ factors, that is, we consider tuples of square matrices $(\phi_1,\phi_2,\dots,\phi_d)$, with entries in $S$, such that their product is $f$ times an identity matrix of the appropriate size. These objects have been studied thoroughly in the case $d=2$ and were originally introduced by Eisenbud in his study of free resolutions of modules over hypersurface rings. Many of the results given in this thesis are extensions of well-known results in …

Some Problems In Reproducing Kernel Spaces, Christopher Felder May 2022

Some Problems In Reproducing Kernel Spaces, Christopher Felder

Arts & Sciences Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The two chapters of this thesis are comprised of work in the setting of reproducing kernel (Hilbert) spaces. These are Banach (or Hilbert) spaces of functions defined on some set, with the special property that point evaluation, on the underlying set, is bounded.

The first chapter deals with the study of inner functions. These functions have a rich history in function and operator theory in the Hardy spaces of the unit disk. The first section of this chapter studies the relationship between generalized inner functions and optimal polynomial approximants. The second section, which is joint work with Trieu Le, deals …

Information Provenance For Mobile Health Data, Taylor A. Hardin May 2022

Information Provenance For Mobile Health Data, Taylor A. Hardin

Dartmouth College Ph.D Dissertations

Mobile health (mHealth) apps and devices are increasingly popular for health research, clinical treatment and personal wellness, as they offer the ability to continuously monitor aspects of individuals' health as they go about their everyday activities. Many believe that combining the data produced by these mHealth apps and devices may give healthcare-related service providers and researchers a more holistic view of an individual's health, increase the quality of service, and reduce operating costs. For such mHealth data to be considered useful though, data consumers need to be assured that the authenticity and the integrity of the data has remained intact---especially …

Partial Automation Of Data Analysis In A Z Prime Boson Search, Ethan Colbert May 2022

Partial Automation Of Data Analysis In A Z Prime Boson Search, Ethan Colbert

Undergraduate Theses

Analysis of data from the ATLAS experiment at the LHC has been a research focus in the Department of Physics at Bellarmine University (BU). At BU, analysis has largely been focused on Z boson decays and searching for evidence of a Z’ (Z Prime) boson. The data are stored in the form of .xml files, with one file representing one collision event inside the ATLAS detector. Previous analyses have been conducted on an event-by-event basis, using the Hypatia software package. While this allows for high-quality visualization and effective event analysis, it is highly time-consuming. I propose and implement a piece …

A Nonconforming Finite Element Method For The 2d Vector Laplacian, Mary Barker May 2022

A Nonconforming Finite Element Method For The 2d Vector Laplacian, Mary Barker

Arts & Sciences Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The vector Laplacian presents difficulties in finite element ap- proximation. It is well known that for nonconvex domains, H1- conforming approximation spaces form a closed subspace of the solution space H(div; Ω) ∩ H(curl; Ω). Hence H1-conforming approximations will fail to converge. This is problematic as it is highly difficult to construct more general finite dimensional ap- proximation spaces for this space. We will present an extension of a nonconforming method introduced by Brenner et al. The method was originally given for P1-nonconforming spaces in two dimensions. Our extension is given for degree r polynomials, but which agrees with the …
