The Examination Of The Arithmetic Surface (3, 5) Over Q, Rachel J. Arguelles May 2022

The Examination Of The Arithmetic Surface (3, 5) Over Q, Rachel J. Arguelles

Electronic Theses, Projects, and Dissertations

This thesis is centered around the construction and analysis of the principal arithmetic surface (3, 5) over Q. By adjoining the two symbols i,j, where i2 = 3, j2 = 5, such that ij = -ji, I can produce a quaternion algebra over Q. I use this quaternion algebra to find a discrete subgroup of SL2(R), which I identify with isometries of the hyperbolic plane. From this quaternion algebra, I produce a large list of matrices and apply them via Mobius transformations to the point (0, 2), which is the center of my Dirichlet domain. This …

Symmetric Generation, Ana Gonzalez May 2022

Symmetric Generation, Ana Gonzalez

Electronic Theses, Projects, and Dissertations

We will examine progenitors. We start with progenitors of the form $m^{*n} : N$ where $m^{*n}$ is a free group and $N$ is a permutation group of degree $n$. But, $m^{*n} : N$ is a group of infinite order so we will factor by the necessary relations to get finite homomorphic images. These groups are constructed through the manual double coset enumeration method. We will examine how to construct progenitors for wreath products.

Lattice Reduction Algorithms, Juan Ortega May 2022

Lattice Reduction Algorithms, Juan Ortega

Electronic Theses, Projects, and Dissertations

The purpose of this thesis is to propose and analyze an algorithm that follows
similar steps of Guassian Lattice Reduction Algorithm in two-dimensions and applying
them to three-dimensions. We start off by discussing the importance of cryptography in
our day to day lives. Then we dive into some linear algebra and discuss specific topics that
will later help us in understanding lattice reduction algorithms. We discuss two lattice
problems: the shortest vector problem and the closest vector problem. Then we introduce
two types of lattice reduction algorithms: Guassian Lattice Reduction in two-dimensions
and the LLL Algortihm. We illustrate how both …

Identifying Associations Between Human-Environmental Factors And Water Quality Trends Observed At Perennial Headwater Streams Of The San Bernardino National Forest, California, Anna Frey

Electronic Theses, Projects, and Dissertations

Anthropogenic factors related to landscape activities, infrastructure, and alterations, coupled with severe climatic fluctuations (i.e., droughts and extreme hydrological events) are increasingly impairing the quality of surface water resources across multiple geographic scales, warranting the need for comprehensive investigations of the cumulative effects of human-environmental stressors at multiple scales within a watershed. This study assessed three perennial headwater streams of the San Bernardino National Forest, California. The streams were tested for one year from October 2019 to September 2020 for conductivity, dissolved oxygen (DO), pH, turbidity, temperature, ammonium (NH4+), nitrate (NO3-), total coliform (TC), Escherichia coli …

Error Terms For The Trapezoid, Midpoint, And Simpson's Rules, Jessica E. Coen May 2022

Error Terms For The Trapezoid, Midpoint, And Simpson's Rules, Jessica E. Coen

Electronic Theses, Projects, and Dissertations

When it is not possible to integrate a function we resort to Numerical Integration. For example the ubiquitous Normal curve tables are obtained using Numerical Integration. The antiderivative of the defining function for the normal curve involves the formula for antiderivative of e-x^2 which can't be expressed in the terms of basic functions.

Simpson's rule is studied in most Calculus books, and in all undergraduate Numerical Analysis books, but proofs are not provided. Hence if one is interested in a proof of Simpson's rule, either it can be found in advanced Numerical Analysis books as a special case …

Water quality deterioration of recreational surface waters from excess pollution inputs is a significant concern for the health of the public and aquatic ecosystem. This study will examine the effectiveness of Best Management Practices (BMPs) in reducing pollution inputs into Lake Gregory, Crestline, CA. The effectiveness of the BMPs was examined by testing for water quality parameters including dissolved oxygen, temperature, pH, conductivity, turbidity, nitrate (NO3-), ammonium (NH4+), total coliform, and Escherichia coli on weekly to bi-weekly basis for a period of 1 year. A statistical analysis involving descriptive statistics, Pearson’s correlation, the Efficient Ratios (ER) and Percent Removal Rates …

The Decomposition Of The Space Of Algebraic Curvature Tensors, Katelyn Sage Risinger May 2022

The Decomposition Of The Space Of Algebraic Curvature Tensors, Katelyn Sage Risinger

Electronic Theses, Projects, and Dissertations

We decompose the space of algebraic curvature tensors (ACTs) on a finite dimensional, real inner product space under the action of the orthogonal group into three inequivalent and irreducible subspaces: the real numbers, the space of trace-free symmetric bilinear forms, and the space of Weyl tensors. First, we decompose the space of ACTs using two short exact sequences and a key result, Lemma 3.5, which allows us to express one vector space as the direct sum of the others. This gives us a decomposition of the space of ACTs as the direct sum of three subspaces, which at this point …

Identification And Analysis Of The Contribution Of Various Sources Of Total Dissolved Solids (Tds) In Lake Elsinore Potable Water And Wastewater, Lenai Hunter May 2022

Identification And Analysis Of The Contribution Of Various Sources Of Total Dissolved Solids (Tds) In Lake Elsinore Potable Water And Wastewater, Lenai Hunter

Electronic Theses, Projects, and Dissertations

Total Dissolved Solids (TDS) are primarily inorganic salts that can pass through a 2-micron (or smaller) filter and, when found in high concentrations, can cause adverse effects on aquatic organisms and the surrounding environment. The agency servicing Lake Elsinore and surrounding areas is the Elsinore Valley Municipal Water District (EVMWD). EVMWD’s wastewater treatment facilities are not equipped to remove TDS from the wastewater. Therefore, the influent TDS values are often similar to the final treated effluent recycled water TDS values. EVMWD has permit limits at the wastewater treatment plants relating to TDS, and due to the higher influent TDS concentrations …

Simple Groups And Related Topics, Simrandeep Kaur May 2022

Simple Groups And Related Topics, Simrandeep Kaur

Electronic Theses, Projects, and Dissertations

Since every nonabelian simple group is a homomorphic image of an involutory progenitor 2^(*n):N where N ≤ S_n is transitive, our motivation for the thesis has been to seek finite homomorphic images of such progenitors and construct them using our technique of double coset enumeration. We have constructed U_3 (3):2 over 5^2:S_3, 2x(A_5 x A_5) over D_5 x D_5, S_6 over S_5, 2^5:S_5 over S_5, and 3^3: 2^3 over 3^2:2 . We have discovered original symmetric presentations numerous group as homomorphic images various progenitors. We have also found new monomial representations of groups and given monomial progenitors. We have given …

College Of Education Filemaker Extraction And End-User Database Development, Andrew Tran

Electronic Theses, Projects, and Dissertations

The College of Education (CoE) at the California State University San Bernardino (CSUSB) developed a system to keep track of both state and national accreditation requirements using FileMaker 5, a database system. This accreditation data is crucial for reporting and record-keeping for the CSU Chancellor’s Office as well as the State of California. However, the database system was developed several decades ago, and software support has long since been dropped, causing the CoE’s legacy accreditation data to be at risk of being lost should the software or hardware suffer permanent failure. The purpose of this project was to perform extraction …

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The development of gas sensors for detection of volatile organic compounds (VOCs) has been of interest in the sensing field for decades. To date, the use of metal nanoparticle-based chemiresistors for trace VOC detection, particularly gold nanoparticle-based sensors, is of great interest due to their high chemical stability, ease of synthesis, unique optical properties, large surface to volume ratio, and high level of conductivity. Much effort has been devoted towards gold monolayer protected clusters (Au MPCs) as chemiresistors to detect harmful VOCs. The present thesis documents the results of our efforts to exploit the advantages of functionalized Au MPCs chemiresistors …

A Mesonet-Based Analysis Of Severe Convective Winds In West Texas., Quint Long May 2022

A Mesonet-Based Analysis Of Severe Convective Winds In West Texas., Quint Long

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Multiple studies have investigated the occurrence of severe convective-related winds and have increased our understanding of the forces driving severe winds and their spatial and temporal patterns. Data for these studies have come from airport stations maintained by the National Weather Service. Their standardization across the United States makes them ideal for research, but they are limited in their distribution. This study aims to create a similar climatology of severe surface level winds using a mesoscale network (“mesonet”). Like their ASOS (Automated Surface Observing System) and AWOS (Automated Weather Observing System) counterparts, these stations are standardized and well maintained. This …

Enhancing System Security Using Dynamic Hardware, Sydney L. Davis May 2022

Enhancing System Security Using Dynamic Hardware, Sydney L. Davis

<strong> Theses and Dissertations </strong>

Within the ever-advancing field of computing, there is significant research into the many facets of cyber security. However, there is very little research to support the concept of using a Field Programmable Gate Array (FPGA) to increase the security of a system. While its most common use is to provide efficiency and speedup of processes, this research considers the use of an FPGA to mitigate vulnerabilities in both software and hardware. This paper proposes circuit variance within an FPGA as a method of Moving Target Defense (MTD) and investigates its effect on side-channels. We hypothesize that although the functionality of …

Visions Of Science: An Art Historical Exploration Of Medieval Scientific Manuscripts, Olivia Brock

Undergraduate Honors Capstone Projects

The late 16th century saw a new movement in the world of science to push scientific ideas and practice out of academia and into the hands of the layman. No longer were scholars the sole proprietors of science –everyday laborers, craftsman, and artists now had practical scientific principles at their fingertips that they could incorporate into their professions. This new spread of science was facilitated in several ways, including the publication of books incorporating detailed, explanatory images, new utilitarian instruments, and public lectures. Though science was disseminated through a variety of means, I have been particularly interested in the ways …

Invasive mice (Mus spp.) can negatively impact island species and ecosystems. Because fewer island rodent eradications have been attempted for mice compared to rats (Rattus spp.), less is known about efficacy and palatability of rodenticide baits for mouse eradications. We performed a series of bait acceptance and efficacy cage trials using a standard formulation of brodifacoum-based rodenticide on wild-caught mice from Sand Island, Midway Atoll, to help inform a proposed eradication there. Mice were offered ad libitum brodifacoum pellets along with various alternative food sources, and a “no choice” treatment group received only bait pellets. Mortality in the no choice …

Fingerprinting Paleo-Groundwater Sources Using Stable Oxygen And Iron Isotopes Of Iron Oxide Concretions From The "Boiler Room", Moab Area, Utah, Connor Frederickson

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

Isotopes are naturally occurring atoms of an element that vary in the number of neutrons present in their nuclei, resulting in different atomic masses. The most common stable isotopes of oxygen are oxygen-18 (18O) and oxygen-16 (16O). Geochemical processes, such as the formation of a solid mineral from dissolved elements in a fluid, can result in preferential concentration of one isotope over the other in a process known as fractionation. By measuring the ratio of 18O and 16O in solid minerals and using known fractionation values, the isotopic ratio of the fluid from which …
