Multi Elemental Analysis Of Cannabis Oil Based Products Using Icpms And Microwave Assisted Digestion., Kevin Trevon Marchbanks-Owens
Multi Elemental Analysis Of Cannabis Oil Based Products Using Icpms And Microwave Assisted Digestion., Kevin Trevon Marchbanks-Owens
Theses (2016-Present)
Due to the presence of CBD-(cannabidiol), bioavailable elements as well as industry versatility and relatively low levels of toxicity to the environment. CBD oils have driven the overall demand for Cannabis based plant products in the commercial and medical sector. However, dependent upon the environmental circumstances upon which these plants are grown can leave them susceptible to toxic heavy metal exposure. In fact, the natural metabolism of Cannabis plants makes them a hyperaccumulator of trace metals. This creates a severe health risk for CBD product consumers especially for more vulnerable populations with pre-existing conditions. Furthermore, the risk of heavy metal …

Physics Faculty Research & Creative Works
The Counterflow Dynamics Of Two Correlated Impurities In A Double Well Coupled To A One-Dimensional Bosonic Medium Is Explored. We Determine The Ground-State Phase Diagram Of The System According To The Impurity-Medium Entanglement And The Impurities' Two-Body Correlations. Specifically, Bound Impurity Structures Reminiscent Of Bipolarons For Strong Attractive Couplings As Well As Configurations With Two Clustered Or Separated Impurities In The Repulsive Case Are Identified. The Interval Of Existence Of These Phases Depends Strongly On The Impurity-Impurity Interactions And External Confinement Of The Medium. Accordingly The Impurities' Dynamical Response, Triggered By Suddenly Ramping Down The Central Potential Barrier, Is Affected …

Hierarchical Modelling Of Raman Spectroscopic Data Demonstrates The Potential For Manufacturer And Caliber Differentiation Of Smokeless Powders, Nathan Russell Bartlett
Legacy Theses & Dissertations (2009 - 2024)
With the rise of gun-based crime and the advent of lead-free ammunition reducing the effectiveness of previously used methods, the analysis of smokeless powders to better understand organic gunshot residues is now more important than ever. One method that has shown potential is Raman spectroscopy, a relatively quick, nondestructive, and non-contact analysis method. To investigate whether Raman spectroscopy could be used to characterize individual powders, samples of smokeless powders from three manufacturers, Remington, Federal, and Winchester, each with two 9mm caliber and two .38 caliber ammo types, were dissolved, and their Raman spectra were collected. A hierarchical modelling system was …
Analysis Of Polychlorinated Biphenyls In Electric Transformer Oil Using Gas Chromatography With Electron Capture Detector., Vivek Mann
Theses (2016-Present)
Polychlorinated biphenyls (PCB’s) are a group of synthetic chemicals which are environmentally insistent that were once used as coolants and lubricants in paints, heat transfer fluids, transformers, capacitors, caulking materials and other electrical materials owning to their property of good insulators. PCBs are persistent organic pollutants since they are persistent, resistant to biodegradation, bioaccumulate and have shown to cause a variety of deleterious effects on human health and the environment. Due to this the manufacturing of PCBs was banned in the United States in 1977. Although, production of PCBs has reportedly stopped, the potential or actual release of PCBs into …

Studying Extended Sets From Young Tableaux, Eric S. Nofziger
Studying Extended Sets From Young Tableaux, Eric S. Nofziger
Undergraduate Honors Thesis Collection
Young tableaux are combinatorial objects related to the partitions of an integer that have various applications in representation theory. These tableaux are defined as a left-justified set of n boxes filled with the numbers 1 through n and organized in rows, with the length of each row corresponding to a summand in the partition. In recent work of Graham–Precup–Russell, an association has been made between a given row-strict tableau and three disjoint subsets I, J, and K, also called extended sets. In this project, we begin to classify which extended sets correlate to a valid row-strict or standard tableau. We …

Copper(I) And Silver(I) Complexes Of Olefins, Alkynes, And Cyclopropenes And Their Applications, Anurag Noonikara Poyil
Chemistry & Biochemistry Dissertations
Poly(pyrazolyl)borates are very popular ligands in organometallic chemistry due to their attractive properties. It is easy to modify the steric and electronic properties of these ligands by changing the pyrazolyl substituents. Fluorinated tris(pyrazolyl)borates are used to stabilize many reactive metal ions. The metal complexes of them are used for multiple applications. These ligands are extensively used to isolate and stabilize many coinage metal complexes (Cu, Ag, and Au). We have synthesized comparably less explored fluorinated bis(pyrazolyl)borate ligands and utilized them to isolate several π-ligands (olefin, alkyne, and cyclopropene) complexes of copper(I) and silver(I). Chapter 2 of this research work focuses …
Synthesis And Function Of Ion-Selective Single-Molecule Fluorescent Imaging Molecules And Materials, Alena A. Denisenko
Synthesis And Function Of Ion-Selective Single-Molecule Fluorescent Imaging Molecules And Materials, Alena A. Denisenko
Chemistry & Biochemistry Dissertations
Neutrinos are fermion subatomic particles that interact only by weak subatomic forces—making them almost impossible to detect. However, they can be produced in specific radioactive decay reactions, such as beta decay. We hypothesize the detection of double beta decay through the tagging of the Ba2+ daughter ion from 136Xe (136Xe —136Ba2+ + 2ν + 2β). The proposal is to develop single-molecule fluorescence imaging (SFMI) technology to investigate gaseous chemical constituents in high-pressure gases (ca. 30-150 psi) at gas-solid interfaces. To achieve proper SMFI, heterogenous self-assembled monolayers (SAMs) containing fluorophores that operate under dry conditions and are turned on when a …

Investigation Of The Cellular Uptake And Cytotoxicity Of Ruthenium(Ii) Polypyridyl Complexes As A Function Of Lipophilicity, Matthew Guerrero
Chemistry & Biochemistry Theses
Ru(II) polypyridyl complexes have been one of the focal points of investigation for inorganic anti-cancer drugs, as they are robust enough to remain chemically intact in vivo and many show potent cytotoxicty. In particular, the RPC [Ru(dip)3]2+, where dip is 4,7-diphenyl-1,10-phenanthroline, is noted for its high cytotoxicity (IC50 ~2-5 uM) across a broad spectrum of cancer cell lines and more recently has been implicated as targeting microtubules, which is an unusual target for metal-based drugs. While the cellular uptake for [Ru(dip)3]Cl2 is among the highest seen for RPCs, its solubility in water or buffer is limited and problematic. In order …

Investigation Of F420-Dependent Glucose-6-Phosphate Dehydrogenase Variants Using Ph Profiles And Stopped-Flow Spectrometric Ligand-Binding Methods, Ana Laura Alvarez
Chemistry & Biochemistry Theses
F420-dependent glucose-6-phosphate dehydrogenase (FGD) from Mycobacteria tuberculosis, catalyzes a reaction the conversion of glucose-6-phosphate (G6P) to 6-phosphogluconolactone using the oxidized F420 cofactor, which is reduced to F420H2. The reaction is important within M. tuberculosis, the cause of tuberculosis disease (TB) due to its health relevance for treatment of multiple drug resistant and extreme drug resistant strains of M. tuberculosis. TB affects millions of people worldwide, and although treatable, multiple drug resistant and extreme drug resistant forms of TB adds strain on the current generation of drugs. Since this enzyme is not found in humans, is an ideal drug target. A …
Lipid Rafts, Exosomal Vesicles And Anti-Giardial Therapies, Brian Ivan Grajeda
Lipid Rafts, Exosomal Vesicles And Anti-Giardial Therapies, Brian Ivan Grajeda
Open Access Theses & Dissertations
Giardia lamblia, a protozoan parasite, is a major cause of waterborne infection, worldwide. While the trophozoite form of this parasite induces pathological symptoms in the gut, the cyst forms transmit the infection via contaminated water. Since Giardia is a non-invasive parasite, the actual mechanism by which it causes infection remains elusive. We have previously reported that Giardia assembles cholesterol and GM1 glycolipid-enriched lipid rafts (LRs) that participate in encystation and cyst production. To further delineate the role of LRs in pathogenesis, we isolated LRs from Giardia and subjected them to proteomic analysis. Various cellular proteins including the virulent proteinsâe.g., giardins, …

Numerical Study Of Cahn-Hilliard Equations, Oula Khouzam
Open Access Theses & Dissertations
In this thesis we study the well-known first-order Eyre's convex splitting numerical scheme for solving the Cahn-Hilliard equation and theoretically prove and numerically demonstrate the key properties of the scheme namely: mass conservation, unique solvability and unconditional stability. While the convex splitting scheme has been around for over two decades, explicit proofs for these important properties for the fourth order Cahn-Hillard equation are not directly available in the existing literature. This thesis aims to bridge this gap by providing the complete proofs of the aforementioned key properties of the scheme and numerically demonstrating the performance of the scheme.

Evolution Of The Magnetic Properties On Van Der Waals Layered Magnets Via Pressure And Proton Irradiation, Rubyann Olmos
Open Access Theses & Dissertations
Probing the magnetism in quasi two-dimensional materials has the potential in driving their properties towards future use in spin electronic based devices. Studying such layered magnets will enable the scientific community to uncover tunable exotic phases such as superconductivity, quantum paramagnetism, etc. This work examines the influence of two types of external perturbations, namely, the pressure and proton irradiation, on the magnetic properties of several compounds in the van der Waals crystal family.
Pressure has been found to induce structural and magnetic phase transitions in many of these materials. Using hydrostatic pressure as a disorderless approach to manipulate the interlayer …

Electrothermal Plenum Thruster Simulations Varying Input Pressure And Voltage, Naomi Nicole Ingram
Open Access Theses & Dissertations
A radiofrequency electrothermal thruster is designed and simulated to create a low ionization energy plasma from a neutral propellant using a radio-frequency power. With an asymmetrical surface area ratio between the grounded and powered electrode, ion-neutral charge exchange collisions occurring within the propellant result in propellant heating. The Electrothermal Plenum Thruster conducts this propellant heating in an annular plenum chamber in attempt to maximize propellant heating. A software called CFD-ACE+ is utilized to demonstrate the effects of an enhanced sheath from the asymmetrical power coupling arrangement. Two sets of simulations are run to understand how input variables affect the plasma …

A Cross Section Measurement Of Muon Neutrino-Induced Charged-Current Coherent Positive Pion Production On Argon With The Microboone Detector, Zachary Glenn Randell Williams
Physics Dissertations
Neutrino-induced charged-current coherent pion production is an important channel for the study of neutrino-nucleus interactions. It is both a dangerous background for $\nu_{e}$ oscillation experiments, and a critical component required for precise understanding of neutrino-nucleus pion production in general. This work performed a search for $\nu_{\mu}$-induced charged-current (CC) coherent pion production on argon in MicroBooNE from Fermilab's Booster Neutrino Beamline (BNB), which produces $\nu_{\mu}$ with a mean energy of 0.823 GeV. A flux-integrated cross section measurement was made for this channel, and was found to be: $\sigma(\nu_{\mu} + Ar \rightarrow \mu^{-} + \pi^{+} + Ar) = 1.12 \pm 0.253 \textrm{(stat.)} …

Comparative Analyses Of De Novo Transcriptome Assembly Pipelines For Diploid Wheat, Natasha Pavlovikj
Comparative Analyses Of De Novo Transcriptome Assembly Pipelines For Diploid Wheat, Natasha Pavlovikj
Department of Computer Science and Engineering: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research
Gene expression and transcriptome analysis are currently one of the main focuses of research for a great number of scientists. However, the assembly of raw sequence data to obtain a draft transcriptome of an organism is a complex multi-stage process usually composed of pre-processing, assembling, and post-processing. Each of these stages includes multiple steps such as data cleaning, error correction and assembly validation. Different combinations of steps, as well as different computational methods for the same step, generate transcriptome assemblies with different accuracy. Thus, using a combination that generates more accurate assemblies is crucial for any novel biological discoveries. Implementing …
Symbolic Ns-3 For Efficient Exhaustive Testing, Jianfei Shao
Symbolic Ns-3 For Efficient Exhaustive Testing, Jianfei Shao
Department of Computer Science and Engineering: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research
Exhaustive testing is an important type of simulation, where a user exhaustively simulates a protocol for all possible cases with respect to some uncertain factors, such as all possible packet delays or packet headers. It is useful for completely evaluating the protocol performance, finding the worst-case performance, and detecting possible design or implementation bugs of a protocol. It is, however, time consuming to use the brute force method with current NS-3, a widely used network simulator, for exhaustive testing. In this paper, we present our work on Sym-NS-3 for more efficient exhaustive testing, which leverages a powerful program analysis technique …
Ketone Hydrosilylation Studies Using A Carbodiphosphorane Catalyst, Liam Sullivan, Allegra Liberman-Martin
Ketone Hydrosilylation Studies Using A Carbodiphosphorane Catalyst, Liam Sullivan, Allegra Liberman-Martin
Student Scholar Symposium Abstracts and Posters
The objective of this research is to discover an effective, safe, and low-cost catalyst for ketone hydrosilylation reactions, which involve the addition of a silicon–hydrogen bond across a C=O double bond. Improving catalyst efficiency could benefit the organic synthesis industry, as carbonyl hydrosilylation is used industrially in the synthesis of alcohol products. Use of the carbodiphosphorane catalyst as a replacement for toxic heavy-metal-containing catalysts could reduce waste and emissions harmful to the environment, while also providing an alternative means for accomplishing ketone reduction. Using a cyclic carbodiphosphorane catalyst, we have compared catalytic activity toward acetophenone hydrosilylation for a range of …

Modeling Of Cns Cancer With A Focus On The Immune Component, Daniel Zamler
Dissertations & Theses (Open Access)
The knowledge surrounding cancers of the central nervous system remains poorly developed, in particular with regard to the immune component. The works contained in this thesis look at craniopharyngioma, glioblastoma, and several forms of brain metastasis. While some attention is given to the tumor cells themselves, as well as the patient setting which these studies model, the immune component of disease progression and treatment plays a strong role in each and is the primary focus of the works contained.
Craniopharyngioma is a relatively rare tumor in adults. Although histologically benign, it can be locally aggressive and may require additional therapeutic …

Interval Observer-Based Supervision Of Nonlinear Networked Control Systems, Afef Najjar, Thach Ngoc Dinh, Messaoud Amairi, Tarek Raissi
Turkish Journal of Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences
Networked control system (NCS) is a multidisciplinary area that attracts increasing attention today. In this paper, we deal with remote supervision of a nonlinear networked control systems class subject to network imperfections. Different from many existing researches that consider only the problem of small and/or constant communication delays, we focus on large and time-varying network delays problem in both measurement and control channels. The proposed method is a set-membership estimation-based predictor approach computing a guaranteed set of admissible state values when the uncertainties (i.e. measurement noises and system disturbances) are considered unknown but bounded with a priori known bounds. The …

Binary Flower Pollination Algorithm Based User Scheduling For Multiuser Mimo Systems, Jyoti Mohanty, Prabina Pattanayak, Arnab Nandi, Krishna Lal Baishnab, Fazal Ahmed Talukdar
Turkish Journal of Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences
In this article, a multiuser (MU) multiinput multioutput (MIMO) system is considered, which is essential to support a huge number of subscribers without consuming extra bandwidth or power. Dirty paper coding (DPC) for MU MIMO channel achieves the peak sum-rate for the MU multiple antenna system at the cost of high computational complexity. Both user and antenna scheduling with a population based meta-heuristic algorithm, i.e. binary flower pollination algorithm (binary FPA) has been demonstrated in this article to achieve system sum-rate comparable to DPC with very less computational complexity and time complexity. Moreover, binary FPA shows a significant improvement in …

Stochastic Day-Ahead Optimal Scheduling Of Multimicrogrids: An Alternating Direction Method Of Multipliers (Admm) Approach, Amin Safari, Hossein Nasiraghdam
Turkish Journal of Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences
Multimicrogrid system is a novel notion in modern power systems as a result of developing renewable-based generation units and accordingly microgrids in distribution networks. Their energy management might be challenging due to presence of independent units. Thus, in this paper, a decentralized method for energy management of multimicrogrid systems has been proposed. Decentralized methods can enhance the privacy of users and reduce the burden of calculations. Alternating direction method of multipliers (ADMM) is selected as a decentralized approach which has the capability of breaking problems with complicating constraints in order to facilitate the solving process. Using decentralized approach not only …

Development Of A Control Algorithm And Conditioning Monitoring For Peak Load Balancing In Smart Grids With Battery Energy Storage System, Turhan Atici, Sezai̇ Taşkin, İbrahi̇m Şengör, Maci̇t Tozak, Osman Demi̇rci̇
Turkish Journal of Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences
As the traditional electricity grid transitions to the smart grid (SG), some emerging issues such as increased renewable energy penetration in the power system that cause load unbalances require new control methods. Storage of energy seems to be the best option to struggle with such issues. In this manner, energy storage technologies ensure the operating flexibility of the distribution system operator in the power system in terms of both sustainability of energy and peak load balancing. In this study, a grid condition monitoring user-interface and control algorithm is developed for the peak load reduction and supply-demand balancing in a SG …

Batch processes are extremely important to researchers since they are widely used in many fields such as biochemistry, pharmacy, and semiconductors. The powerful batch detection method is critical to increase the performance of the overall equipment and to reduce the use of check wafers. Many techniques have been used in batch process monitoring. Among them, the multivariate statistical process control (MSPC) is very useful in batch process monitoring because of the large number of records data. Therefore, batch processes have certain characteristics, such as multimodal batch nonlinearity trajectories, which were challenged by these MSPCs. In this paper, a novel process …
