The ability for an ecosystem’s organisms to adapt and thrive is dependent on the water chemistry. Capabilities for adaptation to the ever-changing environment are affected by the pH, or the acidity, of the water. Microorganisms, which are the foundation for a healthy ecosystem, are impacted by the pH of the water, and thus their ability to thrive depends on it. Globally, the pH of the ocean is decreasing as a result of ocean acidification caused by increasing anthropogenic CO2 emissions. The Washington State Department of Ecology Coastal Monitoring & Analysis Program (CMAP) collected high-resolution coastal topographic data along west Whidbey Island with boat-based lidar in 2015, 2018, and 2021. The high-density data acquired along the beach and bluff enabled detailed measurements of morphology and the generation of 0.5-meter digital elevation models (DEMs). The overlap between all three datasets, from Point Partridge north to West Beach County Park, is a 9-km reach dominated by feeder bluffs along the updrift end of a 23-km drift cell with relatively high wave exposure. The current focus of this project is to gather audio signals from thumping watermelon to determine if there is any correlation between the sound produced and the sugar concentration of the watermelon. The audio signals are converted to harmonic frequencies using the FFT and then compared to the sweetness of the watermelon. The ultimate goal of this long-term project is to create a mobile app to be used by consumers when determining which watermelon they should buy at the store.

For a solar panel to function efficiently, it must turn to face the sun throughout the day. Usually, an electronic device rotates a solar panel. In this experiment, hourly rotation of the panel was achieved through contraction of a shape memory alloy (SMA) and a gear system. A Fresnel lens directed the sun's rays onto the SMA causing it to contract. A delayed reset system was built to turn the panel from west to east at the end of the day. In addition, this project investigated different materials to properly heat and cool the SMA within the plexiglass housing apparatus. …

Experiments have shown that objects with uneven surfaces, such as golf balls, can have less drag than those with smooth surfaces. Since fractal surfaces appear naturally in other areas, it must be asked if they can produce less drag than a traditional surface and save energy. Little or no research as been conducted so far on this question. The purpose of this project is to see if fractal geometry can improve boat hull design by producing a hull with low friction.

Small-scale morainal ridges on the middle continental shelf of the Whales Deep Basin partly record the rapid opening of a 200-km grounding line embayment slightly after ~11.5 cal kyr BP. The overlapping pattern of backstepped moraines indicates that the grounding line oscillated back and forth during the retreat. Published sediment fluxes were combined with new sediment volume mapping of the moraines to infer the rates at which the grounding line retreated. The analyses indicate that the rates of grounding line retreat on the eastern flank of the embayment ranged from ~490 m a-1 to 1,300 m a-1. …

Salmon hatcheries face the challenging task of developing release strategies that attempt to maximize survival and minimize risk to wild populations. Release strategies refer to the size at release, timing of release, nature of release (i.e. forced or volitional), number of releases, release location, and the use of acclimation facilities prior to release. The highly altered lower Green river subbasin has been the focus of intense salmon habitat planning and restoration efforts since the listing of Puget Sound Chinook in 1999. Monitoring juvenile chinook migration and life history dynamics has been critical for tailoring habitat restoration in the Green River. In the lower Green subbasin, however, juvenile salmon population monitoring using screw traps has proven to be difficult due to low gradient and water velocities. We assessed futures of the Cowichan River’s anadromous Chinook and Coho salmon populations using a proposed methodology for Cumulative Effects Assessment. First, we examined linkages between salmon survival and effect drivers; we built quantitative models to predict changes in salmon survival in response to changes in effect drivers; created scenarios of divergent futures for each effect driver; and, by applying the models, projected salmon survival for each scenario. We conducted assessment for both early freshwater and marine environments. The Nooksack River in northwest Washington State provides freshwater for agriculture and industrial use and serves as a vital habitat for endangered salmon, a resource that is of cultural and economic importance to the Nooksack Indian Tribe. Historically, peak streamflows in the 2300 sq-km Nooksack basin are driven by rainfall in the fall and early winter. Global climate models (GCMs) project an increase in air temperatures for the Salish Sea region, and previous modeling within the Nooksack basin projects a reduction in snowpack extent through the 21st century and an increase in winter streamflow magnitude. Salmon are not only keystone species, but are also culturally and economically critical, supporting large tribal, commercial, and recreational fishing industries. Transportation infrastructure can significantly impact salmon, especially where road crossings impede their free movement. Modifying stream crossing infrastructure to restore salmon access to inland habitat is a major (albeit expensive) priority throughout the region. Progress in this area will require broadening stakeholder support and financing options. One of the management tools to compensate for these losses has been the use of hatcheries to produce salmon and provide continued support for our fisheries, rebuilding and conservation efforts. This presentation over my thesis examines the feasibility of using statistics to predict win values for major league baseball. Definite correlations were discovered between a Major League organization’s finances and on-field performance. Stated correlations are used to generate a predictive model that will predict on-field outcomes. Using regression analysis, such a model is construed, and successfully predicted win ratios for Major League Baseball organizations using only available past financial data.

Major changes in urchin populations have been reported in recent years around the world, coupled with profound cascading effects on nearshore ecosystems. Extreme climatic events are postulated to be a common driver, along with changes in populations of predators such as sea otters and sea stars. The Stillaguamish River watershed is a snow-and-rain mixed basin in northwestern Washington, with snowmelt being important for sustaining spring and summer streamflow and buffering stream-temperatures. Elevations in the 1700 sq-km Stillaguamish basin reach roughly 2000 m that sustain a historical snowpack above about 1000 m. Previous basin-specific modeling projected that snowpack will retreat to higher elevations and summer stream temperatures will increase, reaching both embryo lethality (16 °C) and adult lethality (22 °C) by 2075 in the North and South Forks in the Stillaguamish River. The waters of Puget Sound are home to one of the most diverse assemblages of kelp species in the world, providing numerous ecosystem services. However, documented loss of bull kelp (Nereocystis luekeana) forests in South and Central Puget Sound and observed declines throughout Puget Sound, pose a threat to marine ecosystems dependent on kelp forests for habitat and primary production, and jeopardize economic activities reliant on kelp-based resources. Bequeathing future generations a Salish Sea that is absent of oil spill impacts requires good information on the spatial distribution of the most likely oil spill scenarios and their consequences in order to help develop effective plans for oil spill prevention and response. We developed a data-informed modeling framework for generating statistical maps of oil spill fate in the Salish Sea to help provide this information. The California Department of Toxic Substances Control's Safer Consumer Products (SCP) program has proposed motor vehicle tires containing 6PPD as a Priority Product in an effort to help mitigate the impacts of 6PPD and 6PPD-quinone on coho salmon and other potentially impacted aquatic species. In the U.S. Pacific Northwest, coho salmon, (Oncorhynchus kisutch), annually exhibit acute mortality upon stormwater exposure when adult salmon migrate to urban and near urban creeks to reproduce. We recently linked these mortality events to “6PPD-quinone”, a highly toxic transformation product of a common industrial antioxidant chemical 6PPD that is ubiquitously used in vehicle tires. These results reveal unanticipated risks of tire rubber antioxidants to an important aquatic species and imply toxicological relevance for widely dissipated tire rubber residues. Eelgrass is a vital part of coastal ecosystems providing nurseries for fish, habitat for invertebrates, sediment stabilization, coastal protection, water filtration, and carbon sequestration. In the tropics, seagrass beds have demonstrated their ability to decrease the abundance of the bacterial pathogen Enterococcus. Enterococcus-associated pathogens can sicken humans and other animals in the water. This work examines microbial community composition in seagrass beds in Puget Sound and the underlying mechanisms involved in pathogen filtration by seagrass beds. Microplastics are ubiquitous in the world's oceans and have negatively impacted marine biota and ecosystem health. The Salish Sea, an inland sea ranging from Vancouver to Puget Sound, is an ecologically significant ecosystem. This study determined the areas in the Northern Salish Sea (Canadian jurisdiction) in which microplastics are likely to accumulate and subsequently where they are likely to cause ecological harm. Modelling and weighted raster analysis was performed using Geographic Information Systems (GIS).
