Chemical And Physical Tailoring Of Guanidine-Based Covalent Adaptable Networks, Kate A. Mcconnell, Michael B. Larsen
Chemical And Physical Tailoring Of Guanidine-Based Covalent Adaptable Networks, Kate A. Mcconnell, Michael B. Larsen
WWU Honors College Senior Projects
We present the synthesis of two different guanidine-based CAN materials which, unlike traditional thermoset polymer networks, can undergo an exchange reaction called thermal guanidine metathesis (TGM) and be reprocessed. Thermosets, which are polymer networks characterized by permanent covalent crosslinks between chains, have a myriad of commercial applications. However, a major drawback to thermosets is their inability to be reprocessed. To develop a more sustainable thermoset-like material, CANs exhibit breaking and reforming of crosslinks under certain conditions that enable reprocessing. To elucidate the effects of varied guanidine structure on the rheological and mechanical properties of these dissociative CANs, we synthesized two …
Bootstrapping The Likelihood Ratio Test To Determine Change Points, Lili Donovan
Bootstrapping The Likelihood Ratio Test To Determine Change Points, Lili Donovan
WWU Honors College Senior Projects
Change point analysis is the process of determining changes to the mean of a sequence of independent observations. The goal is to determine the location of the change and how the change impacts the parameter in question. In this project, we applied the likelihood ratio test (LR) which uses a binary segmentation method to split the data at each change point. The data is iteratively split at each change point until every location of change is identified. The p-value is typically computed using the asymptotic distribution of the test statistic, however, it can be unreliable when the number of observations …
Blood Coagulation Factor Ix: Purification, Isolation, Activation, Alex Macneil
Blood Coagulation Factor Ix: Purification, Isolation, Activation, Alex Macneil
WWU Honors College Senior Projects
This paper attempts to provide an optimized strategy for the purification, activation, and isolation of blood coagulation Factor IX mutants. The goal of this work is to enable future biochemical and structural studies of Factor IX to a gain a better understanding of the structural-functional role this protein plays in the blood coagulation cascade. The orchestration and amplification of the blood coagulation cascade requires the binding of Factor VIII (FVIII) to an activated platelet surface, where it serves as a cofactor to a serine protease, Factor IX (FIX). Factor IX circulates the bloodstream as a catalytically silent multidomain protein1. Like …

Medical Devices And Cybersecurity, Hilary Finch
Medical Devices And Cybersecurity, Hilary Finch
School of Cybersecurity Posters
I begin by looking at the role of cybersecurity in the medical world. The healthcare industry adopted information technology quite quickly. While the advancement was obviously beneficial and necessary to keep up with an ever-growing demand, the healthcare industry did not place any kind of pointed focus on the security of their IT department, or the sensitive information housed therein.
When rapid advancements of technology outpaced the gradual advancement of hospital cybersecurity, security concerns became a difficult issue to control. There is a serious need for more advancements in hospital security. Each interconnected medical device has its own unique security …
The Enumeration Of Minimum Path Covers Of Trees, Merielyn Sher
The Enumeration Of Minimum Path Covers Of Trees, Merielyn Sher
Undergraduate Honors Theses
A path cover of a tree T is a collection of induced paths of T that are vertex disjoint and cover all the vertices of T. A minimum path cover (MPC) of T is a path cover with the minimum possible number of paths, and that minimum number is called the path cover number of T. A tree can have just one or several MPC's. Prior results have established equality between the path cover number of a tree T and the largest possible multiplicity of an eigenvalue that can occur in a symmetric matrix whose graph is that tree. We …

Geology And Geochronology Of The East Dome Complex Within The Hog Heaven Volcanic Field, Flathead County, Montana, Ethan Coppage
Graduate Theses & Non-Theses
This study describes the style and timing of volcanic activity and mineralization in the East Dome Complex (EDC) of the 55-km2 Eocene-Oligocene Hog Heaven Volcanic Field (~36-30 Ma; HHVF) located in northwestern Montana. The HHVF consists of three NE-aligned, predominantly high-K rhyodacitic dome complexes (1.8-4.9 wt. % K2O; 63.2-72.9 wt. % SiO2) formed near the crest the Purcell Anticlinorium, a major Cordilleran fold-thrust belt structure deforming metasedimentary rocks of the Mesoproterozoic Belt Supergroup. Dome emplacement was controlled by a NE-striking fault associated with a pull-apart basin formed between two overlapping, NW-trending dextral oblique-slip faults. The objective of this study is …

Mineralogy And Fluid Inclusion Study Of The Marget Ann Mine Of The Butte Mining District, Silver Bow County, Montana, Tiffany Ostenburg
Graduate Theses & Non-Theses
Butte, Montana, is a famous example of a zoned, polymetallic, porphyry-lode deposit. Whereas over a century of previous work has focused on the porphyry-style mineralization and centrally located, copper-rich lode deposits, relatively little has been written on the outer, silver-rich veins. The Marget Ann mine, in the northern portion of the district, was chosen for this study because of ease of access to the mine dumps as well as archived samples of high-grade vein mineralization. In addition, the Marget Ann mine is somewhat unique in Butte because gold has been found there and previously recorded in the veins. The main …

Graduate Theses & Non-Theses
Beaver dam analogs (BDAs) are a low cost, low disturbance stream restoration technique that may improve surface-water/groundwater interactions and wetland connectivity. BDAs are intended to imitate the effects of natural beaver dams by slowing stream velocity, promoting infiltration, increasing dry-season streamflow, aggrading the streambed, and capturing organic matter and other nutrients. This study was conducted to evaluate the degree to which these objectives were being met at a study site on Perkins Gulch, southwest Montana, USA. The Perkins Gulch study area can be summarized by four gauging sites that separate three reaches along the creek. By detailing background processes and …

Mature super-Earths and sub-Neptunes are predicted to be ≃ Jovian radius when younger than 10 Myr. Thus, we expect to find 5–15 R⊕ planets around young stars even if their older counterparts harbor none. We report the discovery and validation of TOI 1227b, a 0.85 ± 0.05 RJ (9.5 R⊕) planet transiting a very-low-mass star (0.170 ± 0.015 M⊙) every 27.4 days. TOI 1227's kinematics and strong lithium absorption confirm that it is a member of a previously discovered subgroup in the Lower Centaurus Crux OB association, which we designate the Musca group. Cover Crops May Exacerbate Moisture Limitations On South Texas Dryland Farms, Stephanie Kasper, Faeqa Mohsin, Lindsey Richards, Alexis Racelis
Biology Faculty Publications and Presentations
Cover crops are a sustainable management tool for mediating weed pressure, reducing soil erosion, and enhancing soil organic carbon (C) and nitrogen (N) levels. Yet, adoption rates across water-limited farms in Texas remain low, especially among producers without irrigation access, due to concerns that cover crop use of soil moisture will negatively impact subsequent cash crop yields. This three-year cover crop trial in a rain-fed sorghum (Sorghum bicolor L.) farm in Lyford, Texas, trialed different cover crop mixes and seeding rates and confirmed that cover cropping leads to significant soil moisture deficits and cash crop failure when rainfall is low …
The Relationship Between Substrate Composition, Community Structure And Feeding Preferences Of Parrot Fishes (Scaridae) In Anmardub, Guna Yala Coastal Reefs, Caitlin Amman
Independent Study Project (ISP) Collection
Coral reefs are important marine ecosystems, as they support biodiversity and generate buffer zones, yet their abundance is incredibly limited globally. One of the main threats that coral reefs face is excessive macroalgal coverage, which limits sunlight from reaching corals, and thus, limits the energy that can reach them. Parrot fish (Scaridae) are keystone herbivores, as they consume macroalgae growing on corals, which aids in reef survivability. While there is previous research on the abundances, sizes, and feeding habits of Scaridae species in the Caribbean, there is no published research on how community structure and feeding preferences of parrot fishes …
The Battle For The Sea: Tourism Development And Public Ocean Access In Jambiani, Zanzibar, Sophie Beauchesne
The Battle For The Sea: Tourism Development And Public Ocean Access In Jambiani, Zanzibar, Sophie Beauchesne
Independent Study Project (ISP) Collection
The battle for coastal access is a prevalent and controversial issue in both the Global North and the Global South (Mongeau, 2001; Ojo, 2013). Due to investment in coastal land, vulnerable communities around the world are losing their access to the sea (Ojo, 2013; Bennett, Govan & Satterfield, 2015). Battles for ocean access in the Global North tend to focus on recreational activities, but what is to be said about ocean access in the Global South, where access to the sea is needed for the survival of entire communities? (Mongeau, 2001;). Using geographical mapping, environmental condition assessments and open-ended interviews …
Growth Models And Their Stability Analysis For Populations Of A Single Species, Iris Gomez, Michael Garza
Growth Models And Their Stability Analysis For Populations Of A Single Species, Iris Gomez, Michael Garza
Student Research Symposium 2022
Understanding the patterns of population growth for human beings or other animals is important for effective society and resource management. We study several population growth models for a single species to exhibit how the secret of growth patterns can be unlocked from a mathematical perspective. The models are derived from differential equations involving rate of population change, birth/death rate, population carrying capacity, and delayed population influence on population growth. Solutions of the population as functions of time are obtained and plotted to show their visual effect. Equilibriums of the solutions are also analyzed to understand the long-term behavior of population …

Diel Cycling Of Carbon In The San Antonio River, Alisha Martinez, Destiny Guerra
Student Research Symposium 2022
San Antonio Texas gives home to the San Antonio River which is typically fed by its headwater otherwise known as the Blue Hole. In this research, we studied the influence of photosynthesis on the cycling of carbon in the San Antonio River. We collected water samples from the river over a 24-hour cycle from Brackenridge Park to a point just outside downtown, San Antonio. The pH increases during the day and falls and night; the alkalinity reduces during the day and increases at night, and the dissolved oxygen (DO) showed increases during the day and falls at night. The behavior …
Convolutional Neural Network For Covid-19 Detection In Chest X-Rays, Joshua Elliot Henderson
Convolutional Neural Network For Covid-19 Detection In Chest X-Rays, Joshua Elliot Henderson
Honors Thesis
The COVID-19 pandemic has had a large effect on almost every facet of life. As COVID-19 was a disease only discovered in recent history, there is comparatively little data on the disease, how we detect it, and how we cure it. Deep learning is a powerful tool that can be used to learn to classify information in ways that humans might not be able to. This allows computers to learn on relatively little data and provide exceptional results. In this paper, I propose a novel convolutional neural network (CNN) for the detection of COVID-19 from chest X-rays called basicConv. This …

We present calculations of eigenmode energies and wave functions of both azimuthal and polar distortions of the nematic director relative to a radial hedgehog trapped in a spherical drop with a smaller concentric spherical droplet at its core. All surfaces interior to the drop have perpendicular (homeotropic) boundary conditions. We also calculate director correlation functions and their relaxation times. Of particular interest is a critical mode whose energy, with fixed Frank constants, vanishes as the ratio μ = R₂/R₁ increases toward a critical value μc, where R₂ is the radius of the drop and …

Beamline optics design for recirculatory linear accelerators requires special attention to suppress beam instabilities arising due to collective effects. The impact of these collective effects becomes more pronounced with the addition of energy recovery (ER) capability. Jefferson Lab’s multi-pass, multi-GeV ER proposal for the CEBAF accelerator, ER@CEBAF, is a 10- pass ER demonstration with low beam current. Tighter control of the beam parameters at lower energies is necessary to avoid beam break-up (BBU) instabilities, even with a small beam current. Optics optimizations require balancing both beta excursions at high-energy passes and overfocusing at low-energy passes. Here, we discuss an optics …
A Spatially And Temporally Second Order Method For Solving Parabolic Interface Problems, Kumudu Gamage, Yan Peng
A Spatially And Temporally Second Order Method For Solving Parabolic Interface Problems, Kumudu Gamage, Yan Peng
College of Sciences Posters
Parabolic interface problems have many applications in physics and biology, such as hyperthermia treatment of cancer, underground water flow, and food engineering. Here we present an algorithm for solving two-dimensional parabolic interface problems where the coefficient and the forcing term have a discontinuity across the interface. The Crank-Nicolson scheme is used for time discretization, and the direct immersed interface method is used for spatial discretization. The proposed method is second order in both space and time for both solution and gradients in maximum norm.

Recent advancements in high-throughput technologies have enabled simultaneous inference of thousands of genes. With the abundance of public databases, it is now possible to rapidly access the results of several genomic studies, each of which includes the significance testing results of a large number of genes. Researchers frequently aggregate genomic data from multiple studies in the form of a meta-analysis. Most traditional meta-analysis methods aim at combining summary results to find signals in at least one of the studies. However, often the goal is to identify genes that are differentially expressed in a consistent pattern across multiple studies. Recently, a …

Protein structure prediction produces atomic models from its amino acid sequence. Three-dimensional structures are important for understanding the function mechanism of proteins. Knowing the structure of a given protein is crucial in drug development design of novel enzymes. AlphaFold2 is a protein structure prediction tool with good performance in recent CASP competitions. Phenix is a tool for determination of a protein structure from a high-resolution 3D molecular image. Recent development of Phenix shows that it is capable to refine predicted models from AlphaFold2, specifically the poorly predicted regions, by incorporating information from the 3D image of the protein. The goal …

We present a physics informed deep learning technique for Deeply Virtual Compton Scattering (DVCS) cross sections from an unpolarized proton target using both an unpolarized and polarized electron beam. Training a deep learning model typically requires a large size of data that might not always be available or possible to obtain. Alternatively, a deep learning model can be trained using additional knowledge gained by enforcing some physics constraints such as angular symmetries for better accuracy and generalization. By incorporating physics knowledge to our deep learning model, our framework shows precise predictions on the DVCS cross sections and better extrapolation on …

Vertical Take-Off And Landing Control Via Dual-Quaternions And Sliding Mode, Joshua Sonderegger
Doctoral Dissertations and Master's Theses
The landing and reusability of space vehicles is one of the driving forces into renewed interest in space utilization. For missions to planetary surfaces, this soft landing has been most commonly accomplished with parachutes. However, in spite of their simplicity, they are susceptible to parachute drift. This parachute drift makes it very difficult to predict where the vehicle will land, especially in a dense and windy atmosphere such as Earth. Instead, recent focus has been put into developing a powered landing through gimbaled thrust. This gimbaled thrust output is dependent on robust path planning and controls algorithms. Being able to …

In addressing the decline of North American grassland bird populations, it is important to consider the various interdisciplinary approaches that can be employed in their conservation. OECMs, or “other effective area-based conservation measures” encompass a wide array of strategies which can be leveraged to conserve natural landscapes and species. Land easements implemented by the Land Conservancy of Adams County (LCAC) are an example of one such strategy. The LCAC seeks primarily to preserve the rural character of Adams County but has more recently turned their focus toward environmental conservation. In partnering with the Land Conservancy, this case study aimed to …
Making Net Zero Matter, Albert C. Lin
Making Net Zero Matter, Albert C. Lin
Washington and Lee Law Review
In recent months, dozens of countries and thousands of businesses have pledged to achieve net zero greenhouse gas emissions. However, net zero often means different things to different entities, and it is often uncertain how net zero pledges—which set targets years or decades from the present—will be met. This Article considers the motivations behind net zero pledges, highlights the underappreciated role of carbon removal in net zero efforts, and identifies mechanisms for encouraging the accomplishment of net zero goals. Two key strategies are essential to making net zero targets matter. First, society should develop and implement accountability and enforcement mechanisms …

Varieties Of Nonassociative Rings Of Bol-Moufang Type, Ronald E. White
All NMU Master's Theses
In this paper we investigate Bol-Moufang identities in a more general and very natural setting, \textit{nonassociative rings}.
We first introduce and define common algebras. We then explore the varieties of nonassociative rings of Bol-Moufang type. We explore two separate cases, the first where we consider binary rings, rings in which we make no assumption of it's structure. The second case we explore are rings in which, $2x=0$ implies $x=0$.

Earth’s climate can be tracked through geologic time by studying palaeobotanical conditions, as plants are sensitive to fluctuations in climate. Plant biomarkers (molecules found in the epicuticular wax of leaves) can be preserved for millions of years in sedimentary rocks, act as molecular fossils, and provide insight into the type of vegetation cover at the time of deposition. This project focused on extracting one such class of compounds: fatty alcohols. We used fatty alcohols as biomarkers to improve palaeobotanical reconstructions of the Chuckanut Formation during the Eocene. The fatty alcohols found in samples lacking macrofossils from the Slide member of …

Synthetic Development Of Carbodiimide-Containing Polymers As Precursors To Guanidine-Based Covalent Adaptable Networks, Hayden Houck
WWU Honors College Senior Projects
Covalent adaptable networks (CANs) are a newly emerging class of polymers that uniquely bridge the gap between traditional thermosets and thermoplastics. The distinguishing characteristic of these polymer networks is that they contain reversible crosslink bonds that allows these materials to be recycled. Two of the currently best-understood CAN systems include those based on Diels-Alder1 and transesterification2 reactions, both of which involve dissociative exchange mechanisms. Our group aimed to create a novel CAN system based on the thermal guanidine metathesis (TGM) reaction3 by using a guanidine functional group as a crosslinker. In order to create a guanidine-crosslinked network, our research took …
